Message of Hope Kirsti A. Dyer, MD, MS

A whispered wish of remembrance Silent words of loss A song of good bye An unspoken prayer for lasting peace A message of hope Rejoice for the spirit that has passed. Release the sorrow and the sadness. Rebuild a life again. Emerging from your cocoon so gently placed Sensing the freedom in the waiting sky Wings open and quickly a flight A drift in the air dancing with the wind

Sid, the memory of you as our sister is a fond one. You leave an afterglow of smiles, An echo of happy, laughing, childhood times, And bright, sunny days full of flowers in bloom. You have inspired us to DO more; BE more; And GIVE back more to the DE Ovarian Cancer Foundation. Your life HAS made a difference and will help save the lives of many loved ones. Your sisters, Sally Oberle & Geena Matheson

Aglow in the sunlight. The message of hope Touching the spirit Teaching to begin anew Transforming the wish into hope on the radiant wing of a butterfly.

Guest Speaker

Zereana Jess-Huff Mrs. Maryland America 2014 and Ovarian Cancer Survivor Wife, mother, 15-year philanthropist involved in wonderful organizations, a Ph.D. (Dr. Z in the house), and finally a CEO for a managed care organization. I firmly believe I am living proof the American dream is alive and well. I say this with great reverence because everything I am today is the reflection of a community and country that believed enough in me to invest their time, money, and hearts to ensure my success. This same community literally “loved me back to life” during my recent battle with Ovarian Cancer. As a result I am dedicating my reign to three amazing organizations that have had such a profound impact on my life. The National Ovarian Cancer Alliance (OCNA), the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC), and the Ulman Cancer Fund (UCF). I am also the Vice-President of Community Impact for the beloved Junior League of Baltimore, and the Philanthropic Chair for the Annapolis Alumnae Organization (LIOB ladies). This beautiful and sometimes crazy life of mine is made possible through the support of my amazing husband of 14-years Michael Huff and our incredible daughter Hannah. Together we love to laugh, and in our darkest hours, it has always been our saving grace. In fact, when I lost all of my hair after chemotherapy my husband looked at me in awe and whispered, “You have the features of a fairy, or wait maybe an elf, I don’t know, but you are beautiful.” I laughed so hard that day, and then proceeded to make fairy wings! The simple truth is that Michael and Hannah are the light of my life and I am eternally grateful to my God for the blessings they bring. 6

The Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation (DOCF), a non-profit organization, was established in 2009 by Dorianne Short, an ovarian cancer survivor, diagnosed in 2003. The DOCF’s threefold mission is to increase awareness and education about ovarian cancer among women and healthcare professionals in Delaware and the surrounding vicinity; to support women affected by ovarian cancer; and to promote research in the fight against this deadly women’s disease. For more information about ovarian cancer or DOCF, contact: Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation Dorianne Short President/Executive Director 701 Sweetleaf Drive Wilmington, DE 19808 Phone: 302-998-6889 E-mail: [email protected] Website: www.deovariancancer.org

Delaware Tax Check-Off for Ovarian Cancer Research Did you know that there is no reliable screening test to diagnose ovarian cancer or that a Pap Test CANNOT detect ovarian cancer? Please help support our mission by checking the box on the Delaware State Tax Form when preparing your taxes and donate $1 or more to DOCF. Your donation will help fund much needed research for ovarian cancer. This legislation was introduced and sponsored by Rep. Wm. Oberle, inspired by the memory of his sister-in-law, Sidney DeSmyter, and her courageous fight against ovarian cancer.

Ovarian Cancer Facts and Figures Each year, more than 21,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed in the United States, resulting in over 15,500 deaths. Ovarian cancer is the 5th leading cause of cancer related deaths in women age 35 to 74. In the United States, about 1 in 58 women develop ovarian cancer, the deadliest of the gynecologic cancers. Unfortunately, the mortality rates have not significantly improved in the past 50 years. A Pap Test CANNOT detect ovarian cancer. Because there is no reliable diagnostic screening for ovarian cancer, it often goes undetected or is misdiagnosed until it has advanced to the later stages. Unfortunately, more than 75% women are diagnosed in the later stages where the 5-year survival rate is very low. Ovarian cancer does not discriminate. It can affect females of any age and ethnic background. The lack of public awareness and education about ovarian cancer is a critical health issue. Although the symptoms of ovarian cancer often are not acute or intense (particularly in the early stages), they are not silent.

Ovarian Cancer Symptoms    

Bloating Pelvic or abdominal pain Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly Urinary symptoms (frequency or urgency)

Other symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:  Extreme fatigue  Indigestion, heartburn or upset stomach  Shortness of breath  Lower back and/or leg pain  Change in bowel habits (constipation, diarrhea)  Weight gain or weight loss  Menstrual irregularities  Pain during intercourse These symptoms are not always useful for diagnosis since they may be indicative of other conditions. However, if any symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, consult your physician.
