JANUARY CLOSING

The Club will be closed beginning January 1st through January 9th for scheduled maintenance. We will reopen for regular dining and golf on Friday, January 10th. The Lodge will remain open during this time. Thank you for your cooperation.

Golf Shop Open House

Jr Series Results

Junior golf was a huge success at Old Waverly in 2013. October 27th was host to our celebration of the junior golf series and to reward those participants who have taken part in these great events at Old Waverly. This group of golfers was divided into two teams competing against one another in a Ryder Cup style format. The team of BLACK Hats defeated team RED Hats by a total of 3.5 to 2.5. These participants enjoyed food and prizes following play as a thank you for all of their hard work in growing the game through junior golf. A special thanks to the parents and grandparents that make this program a success by their participation and support!! We look forward to a great 2014! “Wiygul Cup” Results Our annual Ft. Lauderdale Interclub was held October 17-19. This three day event consists of Best – Ball, Alternate Shot, and Singles matches. Old Waverly struck early on Day 1 with a 25-8 lead and never looked back during the following two days winning the matches with a total of 76.5 points to Ft. Lauderdales’ 55.5. Congratulations to the Waverly team!! We head to Florida, February 12th to defend our title!

Bryan Cup Results

The Bryan Cup was held November 2-3. This five person team championship was host to 17 teams from across Mississippi. Four out of five 18 hole scores count to determine the teams total for two days. Old Waverly was represented by Don West, Tracey Cockerham, Randall Weems, Wilkes Bryan, and John Dowdle (not pictured). After day 1, Old Waverly was tied with Tupelo Country Club for 1st place honors. Round 2 saw intense competition by all of the competitors while Tupelo pulled away from the home team to claim the title by 8 strokes. Mark Scott is our 2 time defending points’ champion. He edged out Charlie Pilkinton by 10 points to claim the title. Thank you to all of our members that support tournament golf at Old Waverly and congratulations to Mr. Scott.

This time of the year is always a change over for The Teaching Center. The membership, college players, and junior golfers all have time off. This gives us all a chance to look at their goals, their ball flight, their short games and then make the necessary adjustments for them to come out of the winter as better golfers.

However, the professional season is in high gear. We have five players at Second Stage over the coming weeks. One player is already exempt into Final Stage which will be played later in the year in California. For them it is necessary that we don’t make too many adjustments. In fact, for the most part, our discussions will revolve around routines; both on the golf course and off the golf course. As a golfer and instructor, I must remember one thing for certain: My muscles, the function of my muscles, and my skeletal structure will always govern the way I move in space. That is the reason I use the winter for swing changes, just as I advise the membership, college players, and junior golfers. It is also the reason why big changes are not appropriate for the professionals this time of year. I know that every club in America is marketing to their members in terms of TPI Screens and Workouts, Trackman feedback, SAM Putt lab, etc….but, The Teaching Center at Old Waverly really wants the membership to know that we are here, even if they need advice, to help them accomplish their goals next spring. Just remember, that over the coming months, if we all improve our body a little, our swing a little, and our short games a little, then we will be much better next spring.

Our fall has been spectacular and the maples in the English Garden are not finished yet! As we move into the holiday season, our thoughts turn to family, friends and home. We invite you to come see the Clubhouse in its splendor and enjoy the festivities at Old Waverly - Santa Brunch is a favorite with face painting for the children and a visit from Santa. Reservations are required. Congratulations to all the participants of the Bryan Cup. Tupelo took 1st place (593), Old Waverly placed 2nd (601), Greenwood claimed 3rd place (607), and Natchez Trace was 4th (616). There was a great turn out and thank you for supporting the Mississippi Golf Association. The juniors at Old Waverly have been a hard working group! We look forward to watching them grow and learn. Thank you to all the families and members who support junior golf at Old Waverly. Join us for smores over the fire with a beautiful sunset and Lake Waverly as the perfect setting to end your day.
