Talent development a focus for ongoing football health

Western Australia has a long history of producing exceptional football talent but the West Australian Football Commission is dedicating resources to ensure that track record is not taken for granted. WA stars have won the game’s ultimate individual honour, the Brownlow Medal, others have played in AFL premierships, some reach major game milestones in the WAFL and many have had their high achievements acknowledged with induction into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame. About 20 percent of AFL draftees over the last three years have come from the WAFL and per-capita, WA is an industry leader in this area. WA produced an average 14.27 AFL players per 1000 participants for 10 years (2004-14), above the industry average of 11.16. Judging the quality of the talent year-by-year in WA has often been done by gauging the success at national underage level. That train of thought is shifting, with the on-going health of the WAFL competition reliant on fundamental playing and coaching philosophies being collaborated on at every level. Jon Haines, the West Australian Football Commission’s General Manager Football Affairs, said the process of talent development was not ‘cyclical’. There is no evidence to support the thinking that peaks and troughs in draft numbers is a reflection of pure talent, it is more a reflection of inconsistency in process. “Fundamentally the focus has to be on what we can control and ensuring we hold all key players accountable to these factors,” said Haines, who brought some fresh thinking to his role when he started last August. Haines, who worked as the WAFC’s High Performance Manager from 2007-2009, returned to the WAFC following four years at North Melbourne Football Club (2009-2014). He spent two of those years as General Manager Football Operations, one as General Manager Development and Strategy and one as Development Manager. “While success at State level and having players drafted is a measure of success, so too is knowing that we are giving every player out there a chance to be the best player they can be, “ he said. “That may be going on to play 100 AFL games, being a gun WAFL player or leading your community side the best way you can. “As an organisation, the WAFC needed to reaffirm the fundamental philosophies associated with developing talent and that started with putting some highly-qualified people into key roles. “Two of those appointments have been Tony Micale and Adam Jones. We have also added some respected names with great capability to the State Academy coaching staff.” WAFL premiership coach Micale was appointed by the WAFC as the coaching director at the WAFL Talent Academy last May, then in November former Subiaco player Jones took on the role as State Talent Manager. Jones, a former Fremantle Football Club State Recruiting Manager, is leading the WAFC talent portfolio supported by former WAFC Schools Competitions Manager Clayton Anderson, who has been appointed as Talent Programs Coordinator. Jones has worked in recruiting roles for the past eight years based both in Melbourne and Perth and worked as Fremantle’s State Recruiting Manager from 2012-2015. He has also been a member of the WAFC’s Talent Pathway Advisory Committee since 2013, helping to provide talent development recommendations to the WAFC. “Tony is working with coaches at all levels on the fundamental philosophies of coaching and how they can best play their role in developing the talent of individual players,” Haines said.

“In many ways WA has a history of producing players in spite of itself. That is not designed to be a criticism but more an observation of the environment we exist within. We have great conditions in WA that promote activity and allow our kids to play a range of sports. That environmental factor plays a big role in helping the talent shine through. “Perhaps we have taken it for granted that the talent will just continue to flow through. “We need to collaborate closely and cohesively with the nine WAFL clubs and districts to set minimum standards for them to work towards in terms of talent development.” Haines said the proactive approach being taken by the WAFC and increased level of direction on the matters of talent development and coaching development has been appreciated by the WAFL clubs. “There is a great rapport between all football groups on this issue,” he said. “The nine clubs all have a memorandum of understanding when it comes to what is expected. Indicators of success of their programs include the implementation of individual development plans for each player, which is to be regularly reviewed. “We are working together to look at what we are doing, how we are doing it and how we can improve to aid the on-going health of football in WA.”

New Talent Academy coaching appointments: • State 18s forwards coach – Ash McGrath (214 AFL games Brisbane Lions 2001-2014, Premiership 2003, Indigenous All-Stars 2003, 2009, 2013, Jim Stynes Medal 2013) • State 18s midfield coach – Mark McGough (37 AFL games Collingwood 2002-2004, 12 AFL games St. Kilda 2005-2006, ANZAC Medal 2002, AFL Rising Star nominee 2002, 103 WAFL League games East Fremantle 2010-2015) • State 18s defensive coach – Darren Rumble (229 WAFL League games Subiaco, Premierships 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2014, 2015, WAFL State Team 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2015)

Other WA talent facts: • WA has three of the top 10 regions for producing AFL talent based on participation numbers – The Midwest (4th), East Fremantle (5th) and Great Southern (7th) • WA had the top three players in the last year’s NAB AFL Rising Star Award – Jesse Hogan (Claremont), Jack Cripps (East Fremantle) and Dom Sheed (Subiaco)

Are you the ultimate footy trickster?

the ultimate footy trickster?

The wait is over, the footy boots are out, the ovals have been line marked and the smell of Burley footballs fills the air. The WA footy season is almost upon us and to build the excitement heading into the opening round we are calling on all footy fans to be a part of our new #WAFooty campaign. This season will feature the launch of the #WAFootytricks social media competition, encouraging footy fans to show us a unique trick with a football. Winners will be announced each week and an overall winner will be chosen at the conclusion of the season-long competition in September.

How can you get involved?

This season will feature the launch of the #WAFootytricks social media competition, encouraging footy fans to show us a unique trick with a football.

Stay tuned Be a part of the #WAFooty online conversation, stay posted on what’s happening in the local footy community and keep an eye out for the weekly #WAFootytricks competition winner announcement on WA Football social media. Also stay tuned for the monthly #WAFootyTV episodes on our official Youtube page. Follow us now on: Facebook WA Football Twitter @WAFootball Instagram @wafooty

There are four simple steps footy fans need to take in order to be in the running to win the ultimate footy fan prize and a money can’t buy WAFL Grand Final experience. 1. Record a video of the trick with the football 2. Upload the video on social media (Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram) using #WAFootytricks in the caption 3. Tag a friend to challenge them to perform a trick 4. Tag the relevant WA Football social media account Need a bit of trick inspiration? Head to the WA Footy Official YouTube page and see what clever tricks were performed by the 2016 WAFL captains.
