COULEE REGION WALK TO SCHOOL CHALLENGE Safe Routes to School News As our students are once again headed back to school, don’t forget to be more alert to children walking and riding their bikes to school. Northern Hills is part of the national “Safe Routes to School” program which encourages students to actively commute to school. There will be several fun activities in which to participate this fall! Walk to School Week will be October 5-9. Any student that walks, scooter, bikes or otherwise actively commutes can enter a drawing to win fun active prizes. And Wednesday, October 7 is International Walk to School Day where Northern Hills students will be joining children from all over the world in walking to school. Let’s see as many children walk, scooter or bike that week as possible to win the coveted “Golden Shoe Award”! And as always, every Wednesday morning students can join in the If temperature is at zero or below or if it’s raining, we will NOT have the Walking School Bus that Wednesday. The Walking School Bus is a group of people walking a predetermined route together for better visibility, safety, and of course fun. Northern Hills’ Walking School Bus starts at the corner of East Avenue North and Riders Club Road on Wednesdays at 7:40 a.m. and progresses down East Avenue, arriving at Northern Hills about 8:00 a.m. First is the annual walk to school challenge. This will take place next week, October 5-8. Students are encouraged to actively commute (via walking, biking, scootering, or anything else kid powered) to school however they like all week long. Teachers will help the children chart their participation, and we will be competing with other schools in our county for the coveted Golden Sneaker, (which is sort of like the Stanley Cup but cleaner), which we are defending this year once again. Students will receive chains and foot shaped "toe tokens" to place on those chains each day that they actively commute to school for the whole week. In honor of the walk to school challenge, the Walking School bus will meet at the usual time and place every school day next week. So if you usually drive your children to school, consider dropping them off with the walking school bus and they can collect the wildly popular toe tokens as well. The second event next week is International Walk to School Day, on Wednesday the 7th of October. Any students that actively commute on this day will receive the toe token, as well as a reflective backpack tag or a reflective slap bracelet and drawing slip to be entered a fabulous prize raffle. If you have any questions about the Walking School Bus or would like to volunteer to be an adult chaperone, please contact Caleb McClung. You may find that you have even more fun than the kids! Onalaska High School named a 2015 National Blue Ribbon School Onalaska High School was honored for high academic achievement Tuesday as it was among nine Wisconsin schools recognized as 2015 National Blue Ribbon Schools. “This is truly a district and community celebration and an opportunity to recognize the efforts of our staff and students as well as a community that values education,” Principal Jared Schaffner said. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private schools where students either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. All schools are recognized in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates: Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates are also at the highest levels. Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates for each subgroup are at high levels. Nationally, 335 schools were recognized Tuesday by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. In 1997, Onalaska Middle School was a Blue Ribbon School Award winner. Way to go Onalaska High!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WEATHER...WEATHER...WEATHER!! PLEASE dress your children appropriately for the colder weather. Hats, boots and mittens will help keep them warm. If you’d like to put an extra dry outfit in your child’s backpack, especially socks, please feel free to do so. During inclement weather, our students will be kept indoors. Inclement weather includes such weather conditions as rain, wet snow, lightning and below zero temperatures, which will include the wind chill. **We use the website: weather.com to check the temperature. If it’s zero and below, with the wind chill, students may stay inside for recess. ***On days when the weather might indicate the necessity to close school, please watch or listen to TV: WXOW TV-19, Radio Stations: WKTY/WTRV, HOT 94.7, WLXR-105, WIZM Z-93, WLFN-1490, and KQEG.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical Education has been unique this year as we have been outside each day. The students have been great! Just a reminder we will be going out every day for the next month yet so dress appropriately and keep your P.E. shoes at school. The new gymnasium will be wonderful when we get in. Keep active and healthy-Mrs. Faas Mrs. Cheryl Faas, Physical Education

ART Students in grades 1-5 kicked of the year by completing artworks for a special program called Original Works. You will have an opportunity to order a variety of useful and fun items, all professionally made and featuring your child's very own artwork. Look for complete details coming home soon! Students have also begun creating a variety of artworks at every grade level. The start of this school year has been an amazing experience for me, as a teacher and an Onalaska resident, to observe how appreciative our students have been to have this new learning environment. It is clear that NH students are more charged up to learn than ever before! Have a great October. Mr. Brian Christensen, Art

MUSIC 4th/5th Grade Choir Northern Hills has a new 4th and 5th grade choir that is rehearsing at 7:40 on Wednesday mornings. We have many students signed up and we're off to a great start! Please try to have students here on time. Students can come in the building through Door C (the old front doors on Spruce Street). With a very limited number of rehearsals until our winter program it is very important we get to work right away. Students have been told that the music room door will shut at 7:50. If students are late they will need to go out to recess. Students who miss habitually will not be able to perform with the ensemble. I will notify parents of students who are not making it to choir on time so everyone is on the same page! We look forward to seeing you at our first performance on December 21st at 6:30 here at Northing Hills!! Have a great month. Mrs. Christiana Martin, Music
