What’s Happening Management Committee Update – We would like to welcome Stephanie Robb as our new Social Committee Co-ordinator. Due to personal circumstances and Kerry’s commitments as the ambassador for the Variety Charity, and her passion for running and training, Kerry has handed the reigns over to Steph. The management committee would like to thank Kerry Crowley for all of her time, effort and fun activities,  you’ve really done an amazing job over the last 3 + years and we are sure you will take wonderful lasting memories of your time in this role! Stephanie Robb - I have two boys Alex (6) and Vincent (5). Vincent is in his second year with Mrs Williams M/T/W class where he loves being one of the older kids this year which has made him more confident. I am currently enjoying being between payroll/accounting roles which has enabled me to be able to help with my sons reading groups at school, as well as help out with our preschool. I am so happy that my boys are now big enough to join me in one of my favourite pastimes bush walking. It's great to get outdoors with the family. I really enjoyed assisting with the Bunnings BBQ as it gave me a sense of achievement and loved that it helped out our Kindergarten. This lead to me being nominated to take over the social committee coordinator position. Would you like to donate a book to the Kindergarten? The teachers have highlighted some big books that we would like to purchase to enhance our curriculum and planning. Currently we have an opportunity to purchase them with a 20% discount, so each book is $39.90. Please find the brochure on the noticeboard. Some of the titles include : • The Universe • How Can We Reduce Pollution • Where the Rubbish Goes • Bush Tucker • Torres Strait Islands • Celebrations of the World • Friendship Big Book • Where Are You From? When a family donate a book we place a label inside the book to show our appreciation and thanks which is shared with families for many years to come! If you would like to donate or contribute towards purchasing any of the highlighted books or another title of interest please see Allison or Amy in the office.

What’s Happening Marc (Mrs Ling’s husband) has been our gardener for nearly the past 2 years, ensuring our gardens are well manicured and presented for the children each day. Marc has sold his business and we welcome Matt (pictured right) as the new gardener at the Kindergarten. Aunty Wendy’s Mob - honours Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, celebrates cultures and educates all children, encouraging them to appreciate and explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures at a very young age. The children will perform with Wendy and participate in song, dance, language and drama experiences that present contemporary, urban images and ideas about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We are very excited to bring this performance to The Hills Community Kindergarten as we continue to develop our connections with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences and promote authentic teaching and learning opportunities for the children.

Getting to know our Office Administration Assistant - Amy Burford

You will find me in the preschool office Tuesday - Thursday, answering the phone, working on the computer, collecting forms, issuing notes and doing the book keeping. I started working at The Hills Community Kindergarten in October 2008 as the Office Administration Assistant when my youngest child Marcus was in preschool. He is now in year 6 and will be starting high school next year. How time flies! I am married with three children, Loren 16, Jarrod 14 and Marcus 11. Like most families, I spend much of my time running them around to their various extracurricular activities and more recently have been teaching my daughter to drive. I also love to travel which is another reason I love my job - all the school holidays! I love working in such a caring environment where the main focus is on the wellbeing of the families who are part of the preschool, rather than on making a profit. I really enjoy meeting and getting to know all of the interesting people that come to the preschool and I hope that I can contribute to a wonderful preschool experience for you and your children.

kNOw Waste Program – Incursion By Stephanie Campbell

During the week of 23rd May we participated in the “kNOw Waste Preschool Educational Program” by Cleanaways Transpacific. This program provided the children with hands-on experiences designed to improve the children’s knowledge in relation to waste issues and to encourage positive long term environmental behaviours (EYLF LO2d). The children learnt about the different bins (rubbish - red, recycling - yellow and compost – green) and what happens to the waste after the garbage collection. They were a little upset to hear that the waste from the red bin goes to ‘land fill’ and can cause damage to the environment and local wildlife. We discussed the importance of recycling and reducing the use of non-recyclable items to minimise what we send to landfill. The children shared what they already knew about our garbage bin system and actively took part in sorting rubbish! We ended the experience listening to a story called “In the Bin”. We are actively building sustainable practices into our preschool routine and are encouraging the children to think about what they can do at home too (EYLF LO4c). Education on sustainable living is an essential element of early childhood education and it is recommended that sustainable practices are embedded in all daily routines and practices (DEEWR, 2009).

Community News By Jill Graham

On Saturday June 18 Oakhill College celebrated their second indigenous round of rugby. The day celebrated Aboriginal culture and sense of community. A smoking ceremony was performed by Elder Uncle Wes Marne and the 1st XV and U16 rugby teams presented indigenous playing jerseys to each other. Mrs Karen Isaacs (Indigenous Identity Co-ordinator of the college) explained that the new 1st XV jersey acknowledges Pemulwuy (the Aboriginal “rainbow warrior”) and the traditional ancestors of our land and enables us to enhance, continue and share the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Over the last two years we have been lucky to have Mrs Isaacs and some Oakhill College students visit us at the kindergarten and share some aspects of Aboriginal culture with the children. We look forward to her visit again this year.
