From the Principal, Dear Parents/Guardians, We have met the midway point of the first quarter and fall break is just around the corner. It is my hope that your student’s school year has gotten off to a great start and the upcoming Fall Break will provide rest from the fast paced action of school, and give your families time to relax and enjoy our beautiful weather. In the month of September, LHHS students will notice the increase in school activities and events that they can participate in. Please continue to encourage your student to become involved at school. Students that become involved in school activities, whether it is athletics, clubs, or organizations, will build on their sense of school pride. It has been exciting to see the amount of school pride in the hallways of our school. Our first Purple and Gold Day was a complete success. Not only is school pride evident in our hallways it is carrying over to our athletic events. We are having record numbers in the stands at football games. School pride is one of the building blocks in a student’s life that helps build good attendance, grades, and attitude. These are attributes which guide them towards a path to success. As the principal of the high school there are many things that create a great school. The item at the top of that list is a safe environment for learning. In the coming months the students at LHHS will experience a practice lock down. We take all of these seriously and have procedures and protocol in place for the safety of your student and our staff. As a school district we work side by side with the Lake Havasu City Police Department to ensure we are current in all our trainings and protocols. A consistent question that we hear is: what is the difference between the two types of lock downs? Addressing this question must be done as brief as possible to help insure the integrity of our protocol for each of the lock down types. During a soft lock down campus is closed to everyone trying to enter until the lock down is lifted. Our classes continue as normal in this situation. A soft lock down provides us an avenue for an expedited transition into a hard lock down. A hard lock down is much like a soft lock down in the sense that campus is closed to all outsiders. Classes do not continue as normal as we have different protocol for this type of situation. Although brief there is a difference, depending on the location of the suspect. After the lock down is lifted you will receive communication from the high school or district office informing you of the incident. We appreciate your help by not making incoming calls to our campus as well as not coming onto campus during a lock down to ensure our police department this time to focus their efforts on the situation at hand.

Principal’s letter continued October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. At LHHS it is vital that all persons involved with students (parents, staff, and administration) work together to help ensure that our students are not bullied. At LHHS, our staff is instructed to report any and all bullying incidents to administration. Throughout the school year the topic of bullying is discussed with both students and staff to help nurture a campus that is free of bullying. The use of social media by teenagers has created another avenue for bullying to occur. Cyber bullying has taken front seat when bullying becomes an issue. Please take time out of your day to monitor your student’s behavior while on social media. If you believe there is a bullying issue please contact your student’s counselor or an administrator. It is our goal to provide a safe, productive, and positive environment for your student. Together we can make this happen. Please take a look at the following website for the National Bullying Prevention Center for more information: www.pacer.org/bullying.

Health Office

The Health Office is open Monday thru Friday from 7:20am—2:45pm. If your student has a specific health concern such as Asthma, Diabetes, Seizure, or Allergy, the Nurse needs an Action Care Plan on file so that we can provide the most informed care for him or her. An Action Care Plan form can be picked up at the School Health Office. The Health Office WILL NOT administer Ibuprofen or Tylenol without a 2016-2017 health card signed by a parent or guardian. It is extremely important to make a note of any medication (s) your student takes and allergies they may have on the health card. Please update the Health Office with any medical concerns or health status changes, including parent/guardian contact number changes that may have occurred over the summer. Make sure that the required immunizations are up to date. This information can be obtained by visiting the Mohave County Department of Health website (or a phone call to either the Health Department at 453-0703 or the School Health Office.) These immunizations are mandated by Arizona State Law and must be kept current. Expect a notice in the mail if immunizations are not up to date. As a reminder, students who become ill during the school day should report to the Health Office with a pass from their teacher. Students who leave school due to illness should do so through the Health Office AND the Attendance Office. Please feel free to contact the Nurse for any clarification or concerns at 928-854-5351.
