GMs Corner

As I was finishing eighteen holes of golf, I stopped for a moment enjoying the warmth of a beautiful spring day. As I stood by the putting green, I witnessed something truly amazing unfolding in front of me. It was a scene that represented many different generations of members also enjoying this wonderful day. Not only was it a snapshot of the past, but also a glimpse into the future and how successful and exciting the club is becoming. I saw everything from club members on their way to celebrate a 90th birthday, golfers coming on and off the course, children beginning their lifelong relationship with golf, stories being told and hearty laughter, entire families coming in to dine, members arriving by boat, and all the while the beautiful Puget Sound and Mt. Rainier framed the entire scene. I thought wow - we are really heading in the right direction, and I am so blessed to be a part of this community.

18 Hole Ladies— We had a wonderful season opener in April with wonderful weather on a wonderfully groomed golf course and some of our wonderful friends reappearing from the hinterlands of sun and dryness. Enough wonderful for the time being, however the ladies have not only enjoyed the beginning of this year's season, they have also enjoyed and done very well during the beginning of inter club competition with the start of PSWGA played at Canterwood CC. We are looking forward to the return of almost all of our snowbirds in May and should have enough players to get our season going strong. May will bring us more competition with other clubs such as PSWGA which will be played at Fircrest and Team Play which will also begin at Fircrest this year. These competitions allow us the ability to meet many new friends from other clubs in the Western part of the state and are a nice addition to our regular Tuesday ladies play. We are also in progress and on schedule in preparing for the annual Women's Best Ball Invitational in June, and are enjoying the preparations for the WSWGA State Tournament we will host in July. If any of you lady golfers are new to the club or interested in joining the fun we are planning for this year, just let any of the ladies in the Women's Division know and you will be welcomed by all. It would be remiss to not mention the arrival of a new grandbaby in our group, so congratulations to Gail and Ernie Yamane who are the proud first time grandparents of a beautiful baby boy. Also, congratulations are in order to Kim and Jamie Lewis for the same reason, a beautiful new grandchild. We're having a good time, so hope you will all come out and play some golf every Tuesday. Diane Cox, Captain Gail Yamane, Co-Captain 3

The following are members of the committee should you have questions or advice. Jacki Gavin – Chair [email protected] ,John Dodge – [email protected], Jeanne McDonald – [email protected], Spencer Gillet – [email protected], Dan Pemerl—[email protected] Part of our new responsibilities will be working with OG&GC Staff and contributing members to publish the Tee Shots newsletter each month. A special Thank You to Mike Campbell and all who helped put together our 1St Edition. We are using a new format. We hope you approve of the new look. Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. Jacki Gavin, Board Representative

49ers -April showers bring May flowers and beautiful days to play golf! The sun was shining brightly as fifteen of us gathered on March 31th for our welcome coffee. It was a very nice morning ending with some taking advantage of the weather and going out to play golf. The first day of play was a scramble. The team of Pam Boehm, Karen Pemerl and Susie Senner won the pot. Congratulations! Guest day which is not listed in the Hand Book is going to be on July 14 th. We are still in the proses of organizing our date with Indian Summer. We will let you know as soon as we have a date. The calendar is posted in the ladies room. A chair for guest day and help with the 18 holer luncheon is still needed. You may sign up on the sign-up sheet in the ladies locker room if you are interested in helping.

Golf Yoga! Please come to the 49er’s yoga class on Thursday mornings from 8:00 to 9:00. Yoga will help with your flexibility, breathing and a wonderful way to stretch and get ready to hit the ball. Reminder- If you have not paid your dues please send your check for $49.00 to Jan Durga. Thank you. Also, Hand Books are available in the pro shop. See you on the golf course! Cheers, Marta Fowler, captain

From The Super: As we move through this spring, many projects at OCGC are taking place. It's an exciting and busy time as we are in the middle of bunker renovations, starting landscaping around the Legacy building, and soon we will be repairing our cart paths. We will also be beginning construction on a new maintenance shop soon. With the demolition of the old shop, we are trying to stay as efficient as possible, working out of the parking garage and a temporary mobile office. With our turf staff spread thin to complete these projects, as well as daily routine maintenance on the golf course, I wanted to update the following to our members. The bunkers already completed should be put into play the week of May 2nd. When we sod the new bunker faces, time is needed to ensure root growth and turf stability. Also, we will be compacting the sand so it is not so "fluffy". The fluffiness is perfectly normal with new sand. But over time, with compacting, settling and nightly irrigation, they will firm up. Although it has been challenging, we are still aiming for the end of May to finish the bunkers.

The landscape project at the Legacy building and parking lot area has also begun. We are currently installing irrigation and some lighting. This will encompass the front of the building, pool area, and the terraced area above the dock as well. This should be completed in the next 3-4 weeks. The cart paths are another project we look forward to completing. This project is very weather dependent as we need dry weather leading up to and during the installation. The asphalt needs to be poured with no moisture in the underlay. The timing on this project will also be dependent on our staff and completion of other projects. We will be involved to "button up" cart path edges to existing turf. As of now, a late spring install at the soonest. Unfortunately, with all that is going on, some peripheral golf course areas may not get attention needed at this time. These include beds, walk paths, stairs, and other detail type work. I can assure you all that these will be taken care of as soon as possible. I thank you for all of your patience and support at this time and I am looking forward to our staff having a great golfing product for you all to enjoy this summer. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]. Thank you, Matt Patton Superintendent, Olympia Country & Golf Club

WSWGA Championship Comes To OC&GC From July 25th to the 29th, OC&GC will host the Washington State Women’s Golf Association (WSWGA) State Match Play Championship. We have chosen the theme “Birdies by the Bay” for the tournament. This 94th playing of the Championship tournament will be the third time Olympia has hosted the event. Although Olympia was one of the original twelve private clubs that formed the WSWGA in 1922, the club did not host its first championship until 1961 after the course was expanded to 18 holes. In 1961, the championship was won by Edean Ihlanfeldt with Judy Hoetmer the runner up. Edean was also the medalist shooting a 70 which was 5 under par on the course at that time. Olympia hosted the tournament again in 1987, Julie Ralls from Sahalee Country Club and a collegiate player attending San Jose State won the Championship. The tournament chairpersons were Lu Paulsen and Chris Johnston. Chris is once again on the tournament committee this year and contributing much wisdom from her prior experience with the tournament.

Calling all Women Golfers If you are a golf member of OC&GC, 18 or older and have a handicap index of 27.1 or below and have posted 10 rounds in the last year you are eligible to play in the WSWGA Championship July 25 th 29th. You do not have to be a member of the Women’s Golfing Division. Please join us for up to 5 days of match play. Take a break from your other responsibilities and participate in this unique event here on your home course. There is a qualifying round on Monday with match play starting Tuesday. The qualifying round will determine who will play in the Championship flight. All other flights will be based on handicap so the matches with others of similar golfing skills. Wednesday you will play a second match either in your original flight or a drop down flight. Wednesday evening is the gala Contestant’s dinner. If you win on Wednesday, you go on to play Thursday. If you win on Thursday, you’ll play on Friday for your flight championship or runner up prize. Entry forms will be available in May and can be mailed on June 1 st. To make the WSWGA state championship successful, we will need several men and women volunteers. This tournament is an opportunity to show off our club as well as being a revenue producing event. You can sign up to volunteer for just one day or all the days. There are options for morning or afternoon shifts. Examples of help needed include forecaddies and snack table hosts on the course or staffing the hospitality table by the pro shop. Sign up forms with a complete task listing are available at the pro shop and in the locker rooms. Grab a form, make your choices and turn them in at the pro shop. For more information on volunteering, contact Laura Doherty, 360-754-8631 [email protected].
