LET US CELEBRATE KNOWLEDGE

Hello All OHCE Members! What a Wonderful Spring season I have just experienced! I witnessed, in all four of our districts, our OHCE members cooperating like never before and going over and above expectations to deliver the best possible meetings. If anyone out there does not agree with me, I suggest you try to be one of the hostesses for next year! From really good meeting places to workshops to decorations to food and general friendliness and helpfulness and way beyond, the hostess counties across the state delivered the best. Congratulations to each member who helped in any way with our successful 2015 District OHCE Meetings. I am looking forward to seeing results of the planning that has already begun for the 2016 meetings. Speaking of results--What a Group we are! Looking through the county reports, I was amazed with some of the numbers across the state. For example, $60,999.00 (yes, that is only $1.00 short of $61,000.00) was granted to scholarship recipients including high school graduates entering colleges and technical institutions and post-high school individuals eager to further their education in order to qualify for better paying employment. In addition to these monies, OHCE members supported 4-H with at least $8,599.00 plus many reports of time and effort spent assisting 4-H members with various projects. Also, support was given to a variety of local community projects and to military personnel. We are a very giving group. I believe that, as an organization, we can be very proud of our steadfast support of one of our most valuable resources--that of our youth. Congratulations to each of you. You are definitely making our state an even better place to live Donna Jones and her committee are putting the final parts together for our National CWC meeting (September 20-22, 2015 in Tulsa). Some things will need to be done in September--like filling the welcome bags, etc. Those bags are bulky when empty; I can't imagine the space they will occupy when filled. I wouldn't have room to store them! Across the state, members and groups have pledged a variety of items and money. Some are still needed in both categories. Please check with Sue Rendel and Madaline Kropff for how you can assist us. Each year our State OHCE organization presents a scholarship to an OSU student. This year's recipient is Madison Rash. She is a sophomore majoring in the recently reinstated Family and Consumer Sciences program at OSU. We are pleased that degree option has been returned to the many choices available to students at OSU. Since each and every person lives in a home of one kind or another and is involved in consumer issues, FCS areas of study affect each and every person. It is an important field of study and we wish Ms. Rash success in all she does. I hope that many of you are planning to attend the State OHCE Meeting in Norman, July 12-14, 2015. Debra Stevenson, Vice -President for Programs has worked diligently to plan a very good meeting and it will be worth your time. Please plan to join us there! Sincerely, Shirley Burns OHCE State President

Southeast District Meeting News

we had great Dinner Music by Randy Lunsford.

The SE District members met in Coalgate at Emerson Elementary School in Coalgate, Oklahoma, on March 17th. The theme for the meeting was “OHCE DYNASTY: Established in 1935, Celebrating 80 Years of Enriching the Lives of Oklahomans!” Putting a fun spin on the Dynasty theme, tables were set with black tablecloths and burlap toppers. Mirrored centerpieces of green Ball jars with cattails, grasses, and forsythia bloom arrangements alongside a duck decoy completed the tabletops. There was also a duck pond complete with duck decoys and cattails with the names of each county in the SE District.

After lunch we had a wonderful speaker Eric Epperson, Vinta City Manager, who talked about “Famous Oklahomans” are just “Real People”.

The meeting was well attended with 196 attendees recorded at roll call and 22 presenters for a total attendance of 218. Because some workshops were presented twice to allow more opportunities to attend, a total of 31 workshop opportunities were made available. OCES State Specialists presented 5 workshops, State Board Members—9 workshops, Educators—3 workshops, 4 OHCE Members -7 workshops, the Wheat Commission—1 workshop, and 3 very talented guest presenters did the remaining 6 workshops. Attendees were extremely pleased with the variety and quality of the workshops. A big “Thank You” goes out to all the presenters. Everyone did a fantastic job! And the food!! Oh those cinnamon rolls provided by the Wheat Commission were so yummy, and the tender steaks for lunch were really over the top! During the meeting, $289.50 was collected for 4-H Scholarships. The silent auction did well as a fund raiser for the 2016 District Meeting, and $100.00 cash was given away at the end of the meeting. The host counties; Atoka, Choctaw, Coal, McCurtain, and Pushmataha both Educators and members did a fabulous job making the 2015 SE District Meeting such a success! But get ready. The 2016 SE District Meeting is looking like a fun and informative day together in Sulphur, Oklahoma, on March 8, 2016. Our host counties are Hughes, Murray, Pontotoc, Pottawatomie, and Seminole. You won’t want to miss this one! Kathy Fentress, SW District Representative 2014-2016 Northeast District Meeting News The State Board met with us the evening before the meeting at the Coleman Restaurant for a State Board Update Meeting. It was good to share together. Three hundred and sixty-four Oklahoma Diamonds came to the Northeast District OHCE Meeting at the First Christian Church in Miami, Oklahoma on March 24, 2015, hosted by the inventive Craig and Nowata county members. The theme for the day was “Oklahoma Diamonds OHCE”. We celebrated with an excellent slide show of most “famous” and “infamous” people from the State of Oklahoma. Thanks Tari Lee! We had some wonderful workshops: Criteria, Criteria, Criteria by Madaline Kropff, Bees by Penny King, Mushrooms by Scott Engelbrecht, Gum Drop Roses by Ann Geyer, Prayer Quilters by Brenda Evans, and Book Folding by Eve Bagwell & Chelsea Bagwell. It was wonderful to the see the Centennial Quilt and have the opportunity to take our pictures by it. Thanks for sharing it! The dinner was catered by Klein’s and

At the end of the day a $100 dollar bill was drawn by the name tags of those still there. Emma Rose won! The 2016 Northeast District hosting Counties of Okfuskee and Okmulgee had a Silent Auction and Country Store to raise money for the next meeting. They made almost $3000.00. Way to go ladies! The 2016 NE District Meeting will be in Muskogee at the Civic Center on March 22 or 29th 2016. Brenda Hall, NE District Representative 2014-2016

Southwest District Meeting News The 2015 Southwest District meeting was held March 31st at First Assembly of God Church in Chickasha. The theme for the meeting was ‘OHCE: Connecting with the World’. The host counties of Grady, Jefferson, and Stephens counties had a wonderful attendance of 357 people for the meeting. A welcome sign in multiple languages greeted attendees at the door. One attendee from the Philippines was excited to see “Welcome” in her native language. The decorations greatly promoted the international theme. Traditional dress for women from five different countries, as well as globe balloons, decorated the stage and attendees were able to view a slide show from Women Walk the World, an annual activity of ACWW. Following the general session, three workshop sessions were available for the attendees. Twenty-five different workshops were presented for them to choose from. In addition to the officer and state committee workshops, sessions were available in quick sewing gifts, chevron quilts and prairie points, essential oils, and many other topics. Dr. Gina Peek and Dr. Lupita Fabregas from OSU also presented workshops. According to the evaluations, the workshops were well received and enjoyed. A special project was promoted throughout the day. This project was the Great American Milk Drive. During the general session and the President’s Workshop, Susan Allen of Dairy Max explained this project. The Great American Milk Drive raises money for milk for needy families. For every $5 raised, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma gives a needy family a voucher for a gallon of milk. During the meeting, $175 was raised which will pay for 34 milk vouchers. Congratulations attendees and thank you to those who donated toward this project. At the end of the day, all attendees came back to the sanctuary, where Dr. Gina Peek spoke for a few minutes about the need to conserve water. She presented the audience with some quick and free ways to save water in and around their homes. Following her talk, a $100 bill was given away as a door prize for one of those who stayed the entire day, won by Debra Stevenson. Sandy Pogue, SW District Representative 2014-2016

Northwest District Meeting News The 2015 OHCE Northwest District meeting was held in Fairview, Oklahoma at the Fairview Community Center and hosted by Kingfisher, Blaine and Major Counties. The theme was “OHCE & Friends – The Rich Things In Life”. There were 174 members present representing all of the northwest counties. Seventeen outstanding workshops were offered during the meeting. We had a wonderful luncheon speaker, Travis Schmidt, that told us about the two things you must do to experience life to the fullest. We enjoyed looking at the State Extension Centennial Quilt that was also on display. The district OHCE awards were presented and Marilyn Gibson from Woodward County won the Heart of OHCE, Debbie Mote of Noble County received the OHCE Member Award and Heigi Gruis from Texas County was named Rookie Member. NOMINATING COMMITEEE ANNOUNCES NOMINEES Well, we did it! We (Mary Jo Bullis, Jerrie Faulkner & I) have filled all the open spots on the board! It was not an easy feat! We, as nominating committee, say this every year – PLEASE send in your qualification forms! If you are currently on a committee and would like to continue, you have to send in forms letting us know. So, for all those members of committees besides Family Issues and Resource Management – that means you! Yes, I know I may be jumping the gun, but just know that you can get them in as soon as August – this should give you plenty of time! I am excited about our new officers! So let’s get to it! Here they are! Nominated for the office of President-Elect is Debbie Mote. Debbie has been a member of OHCE for 32 years and is a graduate from OSU with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. Debbie has served her local OHCE group as Reporter, Photographer, and numerous times as President and has served on every committee at least once. On the county level, she has served as Secretary and numerous times as President. Debbie has served on the state board previously as NW District Representative, and was 2014 NW District Member of the Year. She brings a teacher’s approach to the office, along with a smile to light up the world. It is a great pleasure to present her for this office. Nominated for the office of Vice-President is Mary Deken. Mary has been an OHCE member for 38 years in Noble County, currently serves as President of her local OHCE Group and is serving her second two year term as Noble County OHCE Council Treasurer. She is county Cultural Enrichment Committee Chairman, and a member of the State OHCE Resource Management Committee. Mary has held President and Secretary duties on both local and county level; 2008-2009 and 2010-2011 NW District Representative, and 2013 State OHCE Member of the Year. Mary has a great sense of style and we cannot wait to see what wonders she will bring to the State Meeting!

The following members have been appointed to the respective committees: Marie Jones, current Family Issues Chairman, will continue in that role. She has many plans for the future for this committee and we are confident in her abilities. Joining her as committee members are Nancy Oglesby (Nowata County, NE District), Dottie Gatz (Woods County, NW District), and Linda Sader (Garfield County, NE District). LeAnn Smith will be continuing her role as Resource Management Chairman. She also has ideas after serving for two years and we are excited to see what she and her committee will do. Joining LeAnn are three new members to the board (yippee!) – Vivian Meridith (Adair County, NE District), Karen Pospisil (Cleveland County, SW District) and Patsy Thibodeau (Garfield County, NW District). The Nominating Committee has also answered the request from Promotional Sales Chairman Phyllis Tunender. Carol Donor and Shem Hamil have agreed to work with Phyllis during the next year. They are both from Cleveland County and have helped Phyllis at different times during the past OHCE “season”. They are also new to the board and we are thrilled that they asked to come aboard! We would be amiss if we did not recognize the officers and committee members who will be stepping down. The first is Debra Stevenson, Vice-President – what an extraordinary job she has done last year (and I know this year will be the same)! Committee members Viola Allen, Karen Robbins and Mildred Taylor – you have all been great to work with! We hope you will consider sending me your qualifications forms for the slots we have to fill for next year! And speaking of next year, we will be looking for a Secretary and Leadership & Development Chairman, as well as chairmen and committee members of all the other standing committees. PLEASE get your forms in early! They only take a few minutes to fill out. Come join us! As I told my district, YOU can do these jobs! I know you can – you do them in your counties and local groups! The state board asks you to attend the pre and post planning meetings in April and August, as well as the State Meeting in July. AND, good news! I have not yet been bitten by any of our officers, chairmen or committee members!

Nominated for the office of Treasurer-Elect is Vina Spickler. Vina has previously served on the state board as a nominating committee member. She has served her local group as President and Secretary, her county as Secretary and Scholarship Committee member. She is well qualified as treasurer, serving as such for several groups. We are delighted to have her lend her expertise to OHCE. Nominated for the office of Reports and Awards is Madaline Kropff. Most of you will realize that Madaline currently holds this position. She has done such an amazing job in the last two years that we had no qualms in allowing her to continue in that position. Madaline has also served as Resource Management Chairman and committee member in the past. She is also currently serving on the CWC Steering Committee. We were thrilled that she agreed to continue in this role.

Michelle Schroeder of Sooner Quilts recognized for help with the Centennial Quilt contest.

Country Women’s Council USA in Oklahoma September 2015 September 20 -22 is just around the corner. We have planned for three years to put together a spectacular 75th Anniversary Meeting of the USA area of the ASSOCIATED COUNTRY WOMEN OF THE WORLD/ COUNTRY WOMENS COUNCIL. As I have explained before the Country Women’s Council is the USA area organization of the Associated Country Women of the World. The OHCE State Board voted last year to donate the Silent Auction income at the OHCE State Meeting to the funding of this very important meeting. We trust your county will put together a couple of baskets for the auction at the OHCE State Meeting in July. We encourage counties and individuals to donate to fund this meeting. In this way you can contribute to the ongoing success of ACWW and its projects around the world. We encourage you to plan to attend this meeting to experience for yourself the flavor of a Country Women’s Council meeting. And, yes others like the OSU Extension Educators may attend as guests. We have a number of OHCE members who have volunteered to help by serving as hostesses at the meeting. If you have signed up to be a hostess or would like to be a hostess at this meeting please plan to attend the ACWW/CWC MEETING HOSTESS workshop at the OHCE State Meeting in July where you will receive more specific information on hostess duties. The ACWW/CWC meeting will be an interesting meeting to those of you who have not attended one before. We will have a getacquainted Punch Bowl Reception on Sunday evening after the bus tour. We should arrive back at the hotel by 3:30 or 4:00 from the tour. We have some wonderful speakers, great entertainment, a reception and there will be entertaining and fun filled workshops and tours. The ACWW World President Ruth Shanks from South Wales, Australia will be speaking along with Wayne Edgar who travels to Africa to do work among the people for the last ten years and Jennifer Mayo has spent one year in India and two months in Ghana, Africa . Our entertainment for the first evening meal will be Laurette Willis, an award winning actor and playwright, who is a quick change artist and portrays historical women with side-splitting humor. Lorelei Kaiser Barton, an accomplished Harpist, will charm us on the Banquet evening. The first day Sunday, is tour day. A fun-filled day in Bartlesville and Claremore awaits you, including the Nellie Johnstone, Oklahoma's first oil well and Price Tower, Frank Loyd Wright's only skyscraper. You then will enjoy a two mile drive through a 3,700 acre animal preserve as you enter the Wollaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve. Enjoy lunch in the Event Center overlooking the lake, spend time touring the museum and shopping in the gift shop. The Lodge ranch house became the country home of Frank and Jane Phillips. The museum presents one of America's most unique displays of Western art and artifacts. On your trip back to Tulsa, enjoy a stop in Claremore to visit the Will Rogers Memorial Museum. The museum honors famed humorist and philosopher Will Rogers. The spouses/guest tour will be a trip to OSU, Snow Eagle House, and other OSU Agriculture programs.
