NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2015 Greetings to our Vesterheim Family, We have had a great start to our new year of meetings and we have Addy to thank for that. If you missed the October meeting, you can see the video on The Marshall Plan by asking Addy. I am excited to see new faces at our meetings and thank Cheryle for recruiting some new members. We are all part of the membership committee, so keep inviting friends and neighbors interested in the Scandinavian culture. There is still time to consider helping out the lodge by volunteering to be a part of our various activities. We still need people on board for Adopt-a-school, Foundation, and Auditor. The District 6 Convention will be here in Loveland, Colorado next June. Our lodge can send four delegates and they will be elected next spring. We will be asked to help be hosts at some of the activities. This is a rare treat to meet other SON members from the western US. If you are not a delegate, you can still attend meetings and dinners. We have some new and returning activities to consider this year. We will be offering a Norwegian language class in the new year. We always have a monthly book club to join, even if it is just for one specific book you are interested in. The Holiday Lights of December Parade in Boulder is always a fun activity and a way to remind the spectators that there is a Scandinavian presence in Boulder. I will be heading to Arizona in November and always hate missing the programs, activities and all you members. Jo and I have consented to being Co-Presidents again next year if you will have us back. See you in the spring. Lynne Anderson, Co-President.

LIGHTS OF DECEMBER PARADE Vesterheim is participating once again in the Holiday Parade in downtown Boulder on Saturday December 5th. We are looking for walkers and decorators. There may be room for a couple of riders as well if you can’t walk. Wear your Norwegian sweater, bunad, nisse, troll, Viking etc costume. That morning we meet at Carol and Garry Gorsuch’s home in Boulder to decorate the truck (and maybe a VW Beetle). At 4:30 we meet downtown for dinner, and then walk over to the parade line-up. The parade starts at 6pm. It probably doesn’t take more than 15 minutes to complete the route, but our starting time depends on our line-up location. The city will give me that information a week before the parade. Please contact me at 303-449-9596 or [email protected] if you want to participate, and I’ll get back to you the week before with the final details. Cathy Allen. 2

CULTURAL CORNER NOVEMBER PROGRAM   Vesterheim Lodge will meet November 20, 7:00 PM at Atonement Lutheran Church in Boulder. Marylee Hagen will present the program: “Tracing Your Norwegian Ancestors”. Marylee traced her grandfather, Nils Andreasen Hagen, back to Kristiansand, Vest Agder, Norway. She will share her 20 years of research experience and how she found and visited the homeland and farms of her Norwegian ancestors. Research strategies, techniques, resources, examples of documents, records, and photos will be explained in a power point presentation and display boards. Marylee has a B.A. & M.A. in Education from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. She is the Genealogy Coordinator & Cultural Director for the SON Fjelldalen Lodge in Denver and has earned her Cultural Skills Genealogist Pin with 3 level Bars.

DECEMBER PROGRAM   The Vesterheim Christmas Party will begin at 4:00 pm on Saturday, December 12. There will be crafts for children, singing around the Christmas tree, and a visit from Santa Claus.  Children of all ages are welcome! Bring a wrapped gift (no more than $10) for each child you bring. Be sure the gift is clearly marked with your childʼs name.  Ham will be provided but this will be a potluck—bring your favorite Christmas dish serving 8-10. Norwegian specialties are very meaningful at this time of the year!  We plan to eat at 5:30 PM so be sure you arrive with your side dish or dessert by that time. If you have any questions contact Addy Martinez at 303-499-5589 or Arla Olson at 303-666-8744.

BOOK CLUB   The Vesterheim Book Club will not meet in November because of holiday conflicts. Instead we will meet December 2 at 10:00 AM.  We will meet at the Egg and I in Boulder. Our book choice is The Templar Knight by Jan Guillou. This is the second book in the Crusades Trilogy. It continues the story of Arn Magnusson of the Knights Templar. They are determined to save Jerusalem from the Muslims. Arn still yearns to go back to his home in western Gotaland and his beloved Cecilia. Both Arn and Cecilia are pawns in a war between clans vying for control of the crown.  Fate also brings Arn and Saladin, the Muslim leader, together in an unlikely friendship. We will not meet in December because of holiday issues but will meet January 6 at 10:00 AM. We plan to read Happy Times in Norway by Sigrid Undset. This a moving and delicately humorous picture of Undsetʼs own blissful home life before her nation fell to the Nazi occupation. Captured here is the excitement of a Norwegian Christmas, the seventeenth of May, and summer in the idyllic mountains, as well as the chaotic adventure of raising two energetic boys. Sigrid Undset won the Nobel Prize for Literature and is noted for her Kristin Lavransdatter series and other books of medieval times. Happy Times in Norway is a departure from the extensive research of the medieval period and is her attempt to portray Norwegian family life as it was before the war. The Vesterheim Book Club meets at “The Egg and I” in Boulder and we always enjoy new participants!  Most of our books can be ordered from Amazon or found in the public library.   Feel free to come one time or several times and join us for a stimulating discussion!

THE BENEFITS OF BEING A FINANCIAL BENEFITS COUNSELOR BY MIKE JOHANESON

BETTY IVERSONʼS KRUMKAKE Submitted by Addy Martinez 1/2 cup butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 cup milk 1 and 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon vanilla Can add cardamom--1/2 teaspoon Soften butter, add sugar and eggs. Beat well. Add milk, flour, vanilla, and beat well. Place small amount of batter on hot krumkake iron.  Remove from iron and at once roll krumkake on wooden dowel rod or cone shape. This is Betty Iversen's recipe and I've used it many times.   I usually double it and this works well.   Betty taught me how to make krumkake and we had many wonderful visits while we made a batch of krumkake.

I go to at least five lodge meetings each month throughout Colorado.  I get fed well, get to talk to fellow Sons of Norway members and leaders and see great programs.   The best program this month had to be the Vestafjell meeting in Cory, Colorado, east of Delta.   The program featured five Fjord horses from Thunder Mountain Fjords.   Elmer and Brandy Ferganchick brought two mares and their 3 month old fouls and their champion stallion, Cedar Valleyʼs Torden Fjell (Thunder for short). Brandy gave wonderful talk on the history and characteristics of the Fjord Horse breed and about her adventures with Thunder.   After finishing a 100 mile mountain trail ride in less than 24 hours, winning numerous trail rides, top places in show, pulling and dressage, these two have proven that Fjord Horses can excel in any type of competition. This gray dun is considered the epitome of the breed.    For those of us at the Cory meeting, the most enjoyable part of the experience was being near these gentle, personable horses.   From the colts to the stallion, they were like puppies.  They seemed to enjoy us as much as we enjoyed them.

Pictured from the left are: Thunder, Brandy, me, Barbara Firth, President of Vestafjell, Elmer and Cloie, Thunderʼs daughter.   This was the first time the stallion and filly had seen each other. On another topic, those annuities indexed to the stock market have had a bad month.   We handle only fixed annuities with a guaranteed return.  If you are looking for a stable, predictable retirement plan, please email at [email protected] or call me at 720- 971-0130.

NEED A LOVING HOME To fellow SON members, My border collie, Gus & my mini-Aussie, Mariah are so smart, sugar-sweet & healthy.  I'm so sad to see them go, but due to health issues, I need to find them a friendly, loving home where they can be walked and have a backyard to play in.  They are buddies!    They don't act 10 yr. old & get along with any family member, that gives them love, attention, walks, & car rides.   They come with their beds, up to date vet records & food.   Please contact me if you are only seriously interested!   Thank you so much.   P.S.  And of course, you can meet them!   Katherine Linstrom 720-352-1977 [email protected]

PUSH TO BAN PRIVATE CARS IN OSLO

Vesterheim’s HARDANGAR GROUP to start in 2016

Osloʼs new leftist city council has proudly announced its plan to ban private cars from the downtown area of Oslo by 2019, as part of a push to slash greenhouse gas emissions by half from their 1990 levels. It envisions a ban in the city center, home to only about 1,000 people, but where 90,000 folks work. Eleven of the cityʼs 57 shopping centers are located in this area. Local businessmen are venting their displeasure.

We would like to start up a Hardangar Needlework Group at Vesterheim. To be clear, this is NOT a class. There will be no teaching. It is for anyone who loves working on Hardangar, and would like the opportunity to stitch with others in a social setting, share ideas, and peruse patterns. We plan to meet once a month at each otherʼs homes. Whoever hosts would provide coffee and a snack.

And you think the Boulder City Council is over the top? Also included in their plan are 37 more miles of bicycle lanes, increased public transportation, subsidizing the purchase of electric bicycles and reducing auto traffic over the city by 20%, and 30% by 2030. By 2030 all autos must be zeroemissions. They also want to stop the cityʼs investment in fossil fuels which fund its pension fund. Environmentalists are ecstatic.

If you are interested in being a part of this group, please contact Cathy Allen at [email protected] , 303-449-9596. We will figure out what time and day of the month will work best for everyone and go from there.

The council did not say how they plan to implement this. Sources: The Local, 10/19/2015, Quartz.com

NORWEGIAN LANGUAGE LESSONS AT VESTERHEIM As many of you know, Dr. Donna Stockton, a Vesterheim Lodge member, has lived and worked in Norway for 26 years, and also has been an instructor in the Nordic Studies Program at CU. Donna has generously agreed to teach Norwegian language classes to all interested lodge members. Additional members of our community may also enroll in this class. We will meet once a month for one hour prior to each general Vesterheim meeting at Atonement Lutheran Church, January through May for this year. (Addy is rescheduling our   March general meeting from Good Friday to March 18th, while the  March language class will meet one week after  Good Friday on April 1st.)   These five months will be our trial period, and if we do well we will continue next fall.   " Each of us will order our text books through Donna after registering, as it is important that we all use the same ISBN number. She will pass on her discounted price. We would each prepay for the series of classes depending on our enrollment numbers, but the class series will not cost more than $20.00 per session per person. Of course, it will not be possible to

Please contact Donna to register for this class  at [email protected] or phone her at 303-682-3212  between now and December 2, 2015.   " Those who want to move faster have the option of studying with Donna once a week privately or in a smaller group at her studio in Longmont. Please contact her directly at 303-682-3212.
