We received the AJ100 Employer of the Year Award, as well as 15 major awards for our projects. Our practice was also awarded the Central & Eastern Europe Architect of the Year in the CEE Retail Estate Awards for the second consecutive year, and Southern & Eastern Europe Architect of the Year in SEE Real Estates Awards for the third year in a row. In a period of great turmoil in the financial markets, all of our international offices are still winning new work and we have many

projects currently on site. As a group, we strive to continuously improve our design skills and to create special places. You will see that there is a wide variety to the visual appearance of our work. This is the result of our philosophy of being highly responsive to context and purpose. In addition, we have created strong organisational and management structures within the group to ensure that projects are efficiently implemented. Our practice is a world leader in the design of mixed use, retail and leisure developments, and increasingly operates in a variety of other building sectors, designing many new residential, office and hospitality projects. Our success has been underpinned by the skill and hard work of many people, including our clients and their other consultants. We are particularly proud that our practice is now made up of many different nationalities, speaking over 30 languages, all working towards the common goal of designing and implementing buildings of excellence.

DELIVERING SUSTAINABILITY Making buildings both environmentally sustainable and economically viable has always been a challenge for designers. However, client and public perception of the value of effective sustainable design has changed dramatically. Technological innovations and wider understanding of efficient systems have meant that this challenge has become considerably easier. The requirement for Energy Performance Certificates in buildings and mandatory Carbon Emission Calculations means that the value of property portfolios can now be affected by their environmental credentials. It therefore makes commercial sense for projects to take full advantage of the marketing opportunities and potential financial advantages brought by maximising a buildings environmental performance. A fundamental approach at Chapman Taylor has always been about creating the right urban framework and mix of uses that are the foundation of truly environmentally and socially sustainable environments. As creative and sustainability–conscious designers, we have an underlying objective to maximise the potential of any scheme, whilst striving to minimise its environmental impact.

and natural ventilation of the unconditioned streetscape, which is estimated to save five million kWh of energy per year— equivalent to the energy consumed by 450 homes.

The development was honoured with the Sustainable Resource Award and the Best New Development of the Year: Large, in the ICSC 2010 Awards.

Peel’s MediaCityUK which comprises media related work places and studios as well as 371 apartments, a 216 bed hotel and other ancillary uses, has become the first development in the world to attain a BREEAM approved Sustainable Community status. Incorporating leading technological solutions into the design of this £500m development included making use of one of its greatest assets—water from the Manchester Ship Canal to cool the tri–generation combined heating, power and cooling plant that supplies all the buildings on the 36 acre site.

Gordion Shopping Centre opened its doors in September 2009 in Turkey and was the first project to receive a BREEAM rating in Ankara. This followed the success of Erzurum Shopping Centre, also by Chapman Taylor, which was rated Very Good earlier last year and served as a pilot project for the development of the BREEAM Europe Retail scheme. Gordion Shopping Centre partially generates its own energy on site. A co–generation system provides approximately 18% of the centres electricity needs. The efficiency of the system is maximized by using waste heat for both heating and cooling. This will lead to lower CO2 emissions than in any other shopping centre in Turkey.

Furthermore, a 10,000m² lawn scheme at Cabot Circus, Bristol. The project was the first retail–led roof above the department store was installed to improve the development in the UK to achieve the highest BREEAM rating of microclimate of the surrounding area. Chapman Taylor is a member of the Green Building Council in the UK, which was launched in February, 2007 to bring clarity, purpose and co–ordination of sustainability strategy to the sector. Chapman Taylor has in–house BREEAM assessors and a dedicated Sustainability Group tasked with promoting awareness and disseminating knowledge of effective and relevant sustainable design internally and to our clients.

SALFORD QUAYS, manchester // uk Client: Peel Holdings The UK’s first media city has its roots in the ambition to become one of the world’s biggest media brands. Back in late 2004 the BBC announced it was searching for a new northern centre where it could relocate five London based departments. In August 2005, Peel Holdings’ Salford Quays was shortlisted as one of four potential sites being considered by the Corporation. The BBC selected MediaCityUK as their preferred site in July 2006. The management contractor, Bovis Lend Lease started the construction of Phase 1 in May 2007, with full completion scheduled for the end of 2010. The first building was completed in September 2009 and the first residents started moving into their new apartments.

Throughout 2010— and into 2011—the rest of Phase 1 will gradually open for business. The completed phase one development includes major new offices, production facilities and studios for the BBC as well as a separate studio complex, hotel, speculative office buildings, new media department for Salford University, a site–wide energy centre, retail /catering facilities and multi–storey car park, all set within a high quality public realm that incorporates a large media piazza, Metrolink terminus and a park. Sitting above two of the BBC buildings are towers that provide 378 apartments designed by Chapman Taylor. These range from studio flats to 3 bedroom duplex penthouses. The detail design specifies

high quality materials and fittings, creating upmarket, contemporary accommodation, in the heart of this innovative and creative hub to rival many media cities emerging around the world. Surrounded by water, MediaCityUK has not only completely transformed the Salford Quays landscape and skyline, but became the first development in the world to obtain BREEAM Sustainable Community status, incorporating world leading sustainability into the design of the £500m development. The BBC will commence broadcasting from MediaCityUK during 2011. By that time five of their national departments, including Sport, Children’s Radio and 5 Live, will have relocated to the site. The dynamic shapes, volumes and colours of the principal facade

SITUATED IN THE HEART OF BELGRADE, UŠĆE IS SERBIA’S MOST INNOVATIVE AND MODERN RETAIL AND LEISURE DESTINATION. UŠĆE Shopping Centre opened in March, 2009. Situated in the heart of Belgrade, it has more than 120 shops, as well as a cinema, bowling alley, casino and a family entertainment area. The 130,000m2 centre covers three commercial floors and incoporates two levels of car parking. The building is located in an area of great importance to the city, backing onto a large urban park where the Sava and Danube rivers meet, and acts as a strategic connection between the new and the old Belgrade. Fronted by a large triangular plaza, the main façade of zinc, steel, and glass creates a modern landmark for the city with striking, sculptured elements which are echoed in the landscaping of the surrounding area, characterised by strong geometric patterns. The building’s innovative architectural style is emphasised in the evenings through the lighting that illuminates the façade from different angles, with different shades and degrees of intensity. The use of high quality natural materials and a sophisticated lighting system is repeated in the interior design. During the day; natural light floods through the skylight that covers the entire length of the roof, giving life to the elegant theme of the contemporary interior design and providing a complementary balance to the bright colours of the exterior.

FORUM ISTANBUL ISTANBUL // TURKEY Client: Multi Development Turkey

WITH 495,000M² OF CONSTRUCTION AREA, 175.000M² OF GLA AND 265 NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL BRANDS REPRESENTED, FORUM ISTANBUL IS THE LARGEST SHOPPING CENTRE IN EUROPE TODAY, WHICH HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS ‘A CITY WITHIN THE CITY.’ Forum Istanbul was one of the most important shopping centre openings of 2009. With 495,000 m² total construction area, 175,000m² rentable space and 265 national and international brands represented, it is the largest shopping centre in Europe. It opened its doors to the public on the 17th of November with a total investment of €750 million. Located at the crossroads of two important motorways, a metro line, and the largest regional bus station, Forum Istanbul aims to draw 25 million visitors per year. This unique development adds a new dimension to the existing retail market in the region. Entrance from corniche

The scheme concept is 'a city within a city,' producing a complete urban experience with boulevards, piazzas, avenues, courtyards and monumental buildings. The interplay of these elements created streets with long views and narrow lanes with shadows and contrasts in scale, and public squares with different spatial qualities. Public areas are beautifully landscaped and offer suitable space for festivals, concerts, markets and sports events. Chapman Taylor was appointed in June 2007 by Multi TurkMall to develop the exterior and interior design based on a concept prepared by T+T Design and BDP, and to assist on site during its execution.

A DYNAMIC NEW CONTEMPORARY SHOPPING ENVIRONMENT WHICH RESPECTS THE ARCHITECTURE OF THIS ICONIC BUILDING IN CENTRAL PRAGUE. We completed the reconstruction of a 'world class' department store for Tesco in Prague on the 21st of September 2009. The store, branded as “MY” (formally “Maj”), is located on Narodni Trida in the heart of the city. The 1975 building is a National Cultural Monument and represents a rare example of a rigorous architectural concept being realised under the communist regime. The store offers 12,000m² of sales area on 6 levels.

The escalators are located separately to the main retail floors in a precursor to the Pompidou Centre. Our Prague office worked closely with the authors of the original design (1971) to create a respectful modernisation of the building to meet the needs of contemporary consumers. The interiors concept was developed by Fitch in the UK. The MY department store concept will initially be rolled out throughout the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

SOUTHGATE BATH // UK Client: Multi Development UK

THis £360 MILLION DEVELOPMENT, HAS BEEN POSITIVELY RECEIVED BY Consumers AND RETAILERS alike. The BAth Chronicle The 4th of November, 2009 saw the opening of Phase 1 of the Southgate, Bath redevelopment in a low key event which was nonetheless eagerly anticipated by the people of Bath. The redevelopment area embraces five hectares of Bath city centre.

including a residential element and provision for a health club. The masterplan revitalised and strengthened links to the railway station and provides the basis of a wholly integrated transport interchange via the adjacent new bus station.

Chapman Taylor worked for 15 years on the project that has transformed what was a rather squalid area of this World Heritage listed city by the intervention of an extension to the traditional urban grain of Bath, through a series of new public streets and spaces to complete the city centre.

The opening of the first phase proved to be a success with automatic counters registering a footfall of 80,000 people on the first weekend alone.

The scheme was designed with respect to the city’s Georgian architecture and contains a mix of uses anchored by retail,

The project was completed in September 2010 and received The Georgian Group Architectural Giles Worsley Award for a New Building in Georgian Context in November 2010.

ALLEE BUDAPEST// HUNGARY Client: ING Real Estate Development

A NEW Mixed use DEVELOPMENT OF RETAIL, LEISURE, RESIDENTIAL AND OFFICE IN THE HEART OF BUDAPEST. Allee was opened in November, 2009 in Budapest’s lively 11th district. It occupies a 3 hectare urban block with active frontages on all sides within a dense residential area incoporating excellent public transport links. It is a mixed use scheme of 47,000m²; comprising retail & leisure, 89 residential units and 7,000m² offices, which has transformed this part of the city into a lively commercial centre. The combination of global experience and local focus on cultural sensitivity was key in the delivery of this highly contextual development in the heart of the city centre. The main focus was on the wider masterplan and the connectivity to the surrounding city fabric with new pedestrianised streets, two new public squares and a new local park. This approach of designing from the outside in, enabled the team to avoid the pitfalls of the usual ‘box’ type commercial developments and give the local residents a new ‘meeting place’ to own and cherish.

The design concept divides the scheme into six distinctive buildings linked to each other by covered arcades. Each building has its own architectural style and character. The galleried streets create a dramatic ‘sense of place’ with a distinctive character. Sustainability was the determining factor in the choice of building materials and technologies. The use of durable local materials, such as limestone, marble and red brick was combined with high quality modern materials of metal /glass applied in innovative ways, which gives the centre a contemporary look with subtle classical feel. The three level fully glazed atrium and malls utilise natural ventilation to minimise energy use. The car park entry/exit solution with a new 100 metre long underpass vehicular route helped to minimise the impact on the surrounding residential area and reduce air pollution. At the same time this also created a new, quiet pedestrian street for the local residents.

The building provides dramatic vistas with the sculptural quality of the building revealed as visitors approach it along the seafront promenade. The strong forms of the three principle elements of glass, aluminium and finely detailed local stone enclose a large exhibition /conference facility, high quality offices and a luxury restaurant with breathtaking views over the Caspian Sea.

The building's inclined roof stretches out into the promenade, floating above the landscaping and creating a welcoming and flexible exterior public space for exhibitions and events. In adopting a restrained palette of materials, bespoke integrated lighting and considered detailing, the building conveys a business– like and sophisticated image.

CARROUSEL DU LOUVRE PARIS //FRANCE Client: Autogrill

A WORLD CLASS DINING EXPERIENCE AT THE LOUVRE MUSEUM IN THE NEWLY REFURBISHED FOOD COURT. The Carrousel du Louvre is the shopping gallery attached to the Louvre Museum in Paris. The original food court, built in 1998, no longer met the expectations of discerning international visitors and so the new owners commissioned a fresh design approach. Our design extended and enhanced the food court element to introduce a more contemporary flavour to its layout and design. New seating areas and counters were designed to bring together a disparate and complex layout, whilst creating a world class dining experience.

The design of the ten thematic kiosks was inspired by the colours, shapes and forms specific to the country they represent: warm sunny colours and 3D sculptures inspired by Miró and Gaudi in the Spanish kiosk, and fine wine and gastronomic themes in the French part of the scheme. The new Autogrill offers a variety of gastronomic styles from around the world in a fresh, modern environment.

HAVING PREVIOUSLY REALISED THE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL CITIC SQUARE ON SHANGHAI’S BUSTLING NANJING ROAD WEST, CHAPMAN TAYLOR HAs NOW COMPLETED A SHOPPING CENTRE ON HUAIHAI ROAD, THE CITY’S OTHER PRINCIPAL SHOPPING STREET. This major shopping mall in downtown Shanghai was underperforming despite being located on the prestigious Huaihai Road commercial strip. Since its opening in 1999, the centre has undergone a number of ‘facelifts’, however, these didn’t improve the shopping experience.

The refurbishment was undertaken in phases to allow for continuity of trade, gradually improving the centre’s efficiency, visibility and clarity. The central atrium and its skylight were rediscovered and softened by stretched fabric awnings, the circulation was simplified and the exterior was brightened by tasteful, concealed LED lighting zones.

Set in a prime central location, on the site of a former bus station, this new mixed use scheme contains shops, restaurants, offices, and a public library. An existing bridge to the S–Bahn station and car parking is connected to the development. A sequence of individually designed buildings form a new public square and thoroughfare from the relocated bus station. This centrepiece connects the surrounding streets, and an existing department store with the new development. The development will help regenerate the city centre and provide much–needed facilities, whilst still benefiting from convenient public transport access. THE Main shopping gallery OF gORDION ANKARA, TURKEY, CONTAINS high quality interior finishes and a striking public art piece by Hanny Raessens.

GORDION ANKARA // TURKEY Client: Redevco

A DYNAMIC AND COMPATIBLE COMBINATION OF ART AND ARCHITECTURE. Gordion Shopping Centre opened its doors to the public in Ankara on the 17th of September, 2009. With more than 165 shops in a total area of about 50,000m2, the Centre adds a new dimension to the shopping experience in Ankara, with a great variety of national and international retail brands, restaurants, cafes and leisure activities. It is the first 'green' shopping centre and the first BREEAM– certified building in Ankara. It received a BREEAM rating of Very Good, following the success of Erzurum Shopping Centre, also by Chapman Taylor, which was rated Very Good in 2009, and served as a pilot project for the development of the BREEAM Europe Retail scheme.

With its unique design, the building stands out as a landmark in this Ankara suburb. Inspiration for the concept was drawn from local history and architectural tradition. The red bands decorating the ceiling represent the local legend of Alexander the Great, who untied the Gordian knot with a bold strike to become the king of Asia in the middle of the 4th Century BC. The design introduces an urban, sophisticated feel to this new part of the city, with sculpted, contemporary architecture playing a key role at the entrances and in the treatment of façades and materials. The shopping promenade is organised around a single ‘street’ with three main squares. Entering the centre through the south entrance there is the Bijoux Square, bringing light to the lower floors with its kaleidoscopic play of coloured diamonds. Further down the street there is the Central Square, suggestive of an urban plaza.

Gordion shopping centre will partially generate its own energy on site. A cogeneration system will provide approximately 18% of the centre’s electricity needs. The efficiency of the system will be maximised by using waste heat for both heating and cooling. This will lead to lower CO2 emissions than in any other shopping centre Crowning this sequence is the Food Court Square, with vertical decorative and structural elements rising from ground level in Turkey. towards the sky to emphasise the spectacular ambience of the shopping environment.

METRO CENTRE YELLOW QUARTER //GATESHEAD//UK Client: Capital Shopping Centres PLC / Liberty

A NEW DIMENSION IN DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT HAS BEEN INTRODUCED INTO ONE OF EUROPE'S LARGEST shopping CENTRES Over recent years the owners of Metrocentre, one of Europe’s largest shopping and entertainment centres, have been working on a modernisation programme to ensure that it keeps pace with the latest trends and meets the aspirations of today’s customers. This included a major remodelling and redecoration of the Yellow Mall and the opening of a new part of the centre —Metrocentre Qube, which introduced an extra dimension in leisure and dining. The stylish new mall, has five restaurants, a fully licensed bar screening Sky Sports, a Namco Funscape with bowling alley and the fastest dodgem track in Europe. A brand new state of the art ODEON multiplex cinema with 12 screens offers a VIP area, a 3D screen and the first IMAX theatre in the region. The bright, modern and contemporary design with distinctive black and yellow branding is becoming a very popular part of the centre.

Three major art pieces have been commissioned for Metrocentre Qube, all by local artists. The first was recently unveiled on the first floor next to YO! Sushi, a striking sculpture of two giant polished steel cones named ‘This & That,' by Northumberland based artist Colin Rose. The title ‘This & That’ came from the idea of a dialogue between the two pieces. Each piece weighs approximately a tonne and took three months to fabricate and polish, giving it a highly mirrored finish. Extra art pieces were installed in June including ‘Outside In,' a sculpture of scattered stainless steel cubes by Stephen Newby. A community art project was also installed, by artists Theresa Easton, Chloe Daykin and Chris Morton.

A bold double–height space with balconied restaurants opened up a former old–fashioned food court, and a light bright palette of finishes has totally rejuvenated its ambience.

It is characterised by the wide range of different building types, and shows the significant growth of major mixed use projects around the world. This is a recognition of the skill of our various teams in the design of complex residential, hotel, office, retail and leisure projects. This section of the magazine has been organised to show individually selected projects from each of our offices. Although, in fact, many of the projects on which we work are a collaborative effort between various Chapman Taylor teams.

For example, Oil Village in Tripoli, which is presented on the Chapman Taylor London page, also included the efforts of the Warsaw, Prague and Madrid offices. This ability to work together has greatly strengthened our practice and is a unique characteristic of our company, and underlines the cohesiveness of our organisation. We continue to expand our range of work into new countries, and we are seeing strong growth in China, North Africa and South America. This success has been achieved by our ability to identify and respond to the difference in character and context of every place in which we work. Our company does not have a ‘house style.' Our philosophy has always been to undertake design work which responds intelligently to the uniqueness of the brief, the client and the place. This creates the wide variety in the visual appearance of our projects. We are also a business, which is made up of many different nationalities and personalities, and we encourage individual expression within a framework of high design standards and practical solutions. This is why our practice continues to create and implement projects of exceptional quality and variety in over seventy countries around the world.

A scheme for a flagship store located in the heart of Cologne’s main shopping street. The curved façades respond to subtle bends in the three surrounding streets and mirror the corner treatment of adjacent historic buildings. The façade is conceived as a screen of load bearing precast concrete “doughnuts” draped in a layer of glass printed with a lace pattern, providing varying degrees of transparency and translucency. The lace pattern refers to Gothic tracery on the nearby cathedral as well as the ornate clothing of the intended tenant. The project proposes the extensive regeneration of a main public square in this historic city. By removing 3 insensitive 1980’s buildings and a car park and replacing them with retail units, a boutique hotel and residential units the aim is to reinstate the former urban grain and scale of the site.
