Norway North Cape

Voted “the world’s most unspoilt destination” in 2004 by the National Geographic Traveller Magazine, Norway remains one of the great natural wonders of the world. Norway is a land of sublime natural beauty. Along its long, lonely coast – still the true heart of the country – waterfalls plunge into pristine fjords fringed by primeval forests. Majestic peaks crowned with glaciers rise sheer out of the sea. The air is so fresh you can taste it, and from the Midnight Sun to the polar night, the refraction of light on the countless islands adds its own veil of mystery. Endless day, endless night. Each season casts its own spell. Between the extremes of Midnight Sun and Polar Night, and between the temperate south and the Arctic north, natural light always plays an important role, dramatizing the scenery and enhancing the experience. Whenever you choose to travel, your visit will be unique.

Gateway Oslo. Climate

Norway is one of very few countries in the world that actually has four seasons. This does not, however, put any kind of restriction on outdoor activities, you can for instance go skiing, diving, fishing, climbing, glacier walking, rafting or reindeer sledding. In Norway they have a saying: “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!” Compared to most other places at a similar latitude Norway has a very mild climate thanks to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream flowing along its coast. The summer temperature in Norway varies from 5°C to 35°C, so you should be prepared for everything. The average temperature in Oslo in July is 17.3°C, and an average June day in Oslo has almost 19 hours of daylight. GEIRANGER FJORD

In Tromsø the average temperature is 12.4°C. A woollen sweater, a warm windproof coat and good shoes are necessary, but do not forget your swim wear either!

The Northern Lights The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon caused by electrically charged solar particles passing into the Earth’s atmosphere. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the north”, the aurora can appear abruptly during winter, filling the sky with great arcs as ghostly wisps in green, yellow, red and violet dancing above the horizon, before disappearing again. A celestial show which truly needs to be seen to be believed, everyone who has seen the Northern Lights have been caught in awe by this magical display.

This takes place at the Arctic Circle on 21 June, when the polar day reaches its climax and the sun never dips below the horizon. MIDNIGHT SUN

The Fjords The fjords are the most familiar and alluring image of Norway; wild, rugged and peaceful, these water-filled wedges of space are visually stunning. The Norwegian fjords deeply indent most of the lengthy west coast of Norway and are very different in character. Some of them are wide, green and sunny, while in others the surrounding mountains plunge straight into the fjord, often with impressive waterfalls cascading down the mountain sides. The fjords were carved by glacial ice in river valleys thousands of years ago.

Self-Catering Cottages in Norway GALTEN GÅRD

GARDSØYA RORBUER

Galten Gård is located in Femundsmarka (3 hours drive from Oslo) - a natural area with countless lakes and streams with trout, char, grayling, freshwater herring, pike and perch. With one fishing permit, you can fish in over 800 lakes, pools, rivers, brooks and streams. Femundsmarka is one of the largest continuous “wilderness” areas in Scandinavia.

Gardsøya Rorbuer is situated in idyllic surroundings on the island Kirkøya, this is also the “gate” to the World Heritage area. With high standard accommodation in time for the 2008 season, there is a new service building and a separate launch area for the Øien boats. Fishing on Vega is very good, and provides great challenges and opportunities for cod, pollack, Norway haddock, wolf fish and halibut fishing. An ideal location to go kayaking, with access to many small islands which offer protected paddling and easy navigation. The views are spectacular, and it is a wonderful way to interact more closely with the outstanding natural environment.

Galten Farm is 300m from Galt Lake and has hosted both national and international sportsfishers for generations. It is near well-known fishing spots like the protected Femund River/Trysil River; Galtstrømmen with its abundance of fish, the renowned Ister Falls and many other lakes and rivers. Ideal for hiking, there are excellent chances of finding your own “untouched” spot and experiencing a fantastic fishing adventure in sparkling lakes and rivers. There is also a horse-riding centre within 30km of the farm.

An island cruise will take you on various tours of archipelago, each day is a different tour. This area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site because of the special landscape of the islands as well as the eider duck population. We suggest a visit the eider duck museum, the Vegstein Trading Post or Fornminnestein (historical monument trail), a 3km trail through an area of archaeological excavations.

BAKKEVIK BRYGGE Bakkevik Brygge is close to the open sea in the county of Sogn and Fjordane, a great camp with rorbuer, harbour and modern boats, outdoor sitting area and a playground for children. At the camp, you will also find a “lysthus” with outdoor jacuzzi, sauna, solarium and a living room with a fireplace. The main activity is fishing and there are several good spots. The surroundings also offer hiking in the mountains or swimming at Grotlesanden, which is one of Norway’s finest beaches (although the water is cold!). The “brygge” is in an ideal spot for kayaking with experienced guides that can offer you a once in a lifetime experience on the fjords of Norway. At the old and traditional fishing station, Kalvåg, there are shops and restaurants in a maritime environment.

Hurtigruten The Hurtigruten (Norwegian Coastal Voyage) ships have been part of Norway’s lifeline for over a century. Beneath the Midnight Sun or the mystical Northern Lights, daily departures across the Arctic Circle from Bergen to Kirkenes, take us right to the heart of coastal Norway. Calling at 34 ports, most never visited by commercial cruise liners, our ships deliver freight, post and passengers to remote communities, some of which are home to just a few hundred people. Sailing along this beautiful coastline, through magical fjords to enchanted islands, we enjoy a genuine, friendly and unpretentious voyage which is truly Norwegian. As we weave in and out of narrow inlets, we sail along some of the world’s most beautiful coastline, nearly always in sight of land. Many of our ports of call are tranquil hamlets on tiny islands whose inhabitants depend for their very existence on the Hurtigruten ships to bring the communities essential supplies and reunite families and friends.

Tourists from across the world come to enjoy the magnificent scenery and informal atmosphere on board. Travelling on the Hurtigruten is the natural way to meet those who live and work along its shores. Many communities still depend on agriculture and fishing, as they have done for centuries. In cities such as Bergen and Tromsø, and towns like Svolvær, traditional wooden houses and churches and flanked by modern hotels and facilities. In the many small ports visited, such as Brønnøysund and Skjervøy, quaint little houses huddle in the midst of imposing landscapes. This is an intimate encounter with history and culture. All guests on this coastal voyage experience a wonderful range of geology and geography, moods and moments. The 2000 km long coast takes our ships from the temperate climes of the south, to the wild, desolate Finnmark plateau, a journey that brings with it dramatic changes in climate and landscape.

The Hurtigruten Fleet The Hurtigruten fleet consists of fifteen ships with eleven operating on the Norwegian Coastal Voyage route at any one time. The ships vary depending on their size and age.

MS Fram The MS Fram, meaning “onwards” in Norwegian, is the most modern ship of the fleet, specifically designed for expedition voyaging. With her maiden voyage in early 2007, she spends the summer months along the coast of Greenland, and the European winter in Antarctica. Named after the ship used by famous Norwegian Explorer Fridtjof Nansen, this is a truly individual vessel, inspired by explorers old and new.

MS Nordnorge, MS Nordkapp, MS Polarlys, MS Nordlys, MS Richard With, MS Kong Harald These ships were built between 1993 and 1997, and combine the small ship atmosphere with space, style and comfort. Each has its own design and features works of art by Norwegian artists. You can enjoy the passing scenery whatever the weather from the well appointed panoramic lounge. During the European winter, MS Nordnorge and MS Nordkapp travel south to Antarctica to operate the voyages from South America.

TROMSØ

MS Lofoten, MS Nordstjernen The only remaining traditional ships still in service sail during the winter months when other ships operate our sailings beyond the coast of Norway. These small and elegant members of the Hurtigruten fleet - steeped with heritage and character - are firm favourites for many of our repeat travellers. In the European summer months these ships operate some of the explorer and theme voyages.

MV Polar Star

MS Vesterålen, MS Narvik, MS Lyngen

MS Midnatsol, MS Trollfjord, MS Finnmarken

The MV Polar Star is a converted ice breaker that is specifically tailored for expedition voyaging. In the summer months she can be found circumnavigating Spitsbergen.

Dating from the 1980’s, these fine vessels were able to offer larger cabins than the traditional ships that had previously operated Hurtigruten. They each have a restaurant, coffee shop, panorama lounge and ample deck space. These three ships are favourites of travellers who enjoy the real “working ship” experience along the Norwegian coastline.

These three modern ships joined the fleet in 2002 and 2003. Each vessel has its own distinct style and character, offering the latest in cabin comfort and facilities and spacious panorama lounges. The ships have two Jacuzzis, and MS Finnmarken also boasts a small outdoor swimming pool.

Northbound Excursions The Hurtigruten experience is far more than seas and skies. Enrich your voyage by taking part in the extensive excursion programme and take full advantage of the fact that the ships call at ports other ships cannot reach. English speaking local guides ensure that yours will be the true Norwegian experience. Walking Tour of Ålesund (15/09 - 14/04) A guided walk through this charming town is the best way to appreciate its history and architectural gems. Ålesund is spread over three islands, linked by bridges, at the entrance to four fjords. Rebuilt after a fire in 1904, architects made full use of the prevalent trend for Art Nouveau. Geiranger - Ålesund (15/04 - 30/05) National Geographic Traveller Magazine voted the Norwegian Fjords the “most unspoilt travel destination in the world’ in 2004. Let us show you why. At the heart of Geirangerfjord country, the Eagle Road route offers dramatic bird’s eye view of the fjord which contrasts with the more gentle scenery along the coast. Gaily painted farms and villages, country churches, rivers and waterfalls complete the picture of a rural idyll as you continue by coach and boat to beautiful Ålesund. The journey ends at the top of Aksla Mountain, with splendid views over Ålesund. Geiranger - Molde (31/05 - 14/09) Visit Eagle’s view, Mount Dalsnibba, the spectacular Seven Sisters waterfalls and the famous Trollstigen or “Trolls’ Road” - the drive takes you to 900 m above sea level and includes a series of hairpin turns. The wide Romsdalsfjord lies in gentle contrast to the mountains. Light snack in a local restaurant, and a tour of the “City of Roses” will uncover the delights of historical Molde, set in a landscape of soaring peaks.

Bodø - Saltstraumen - Sea Eagle Safari (29/03 - 28/10) The world’s strongest tidal current. We travel by Zodiac to bring us close to the powerful, wild forces of nature in this rugged landscape. Four times a day, millions of litres of water are forced through the 150 m wide strait, at an average speed of 29 km per hour. Overhead soar sea eagles, their wingspan over two metres.

NORTH CAPE

Tromsø sightseeing (All Year Round) The gateway to the arctic, Tromsø occupies an imposing position between the mountains and the sea, joined to the mainland by a splendid bridge. Experience the Arctic from the comfort of Polaria, an interactive exhibition devoted to the exploration of the icy wastes. The Arctic Cathedral, rises like a mountain of ice. One of its 40 metre high walls is a remarkable, triangular stained glass window. Svartisen Glacier - Ørnes (01/04 - 30/09) This excursion reveals why Norway’s second largest glacier has been drawing tourists for over a century. South of Ørnes you will board a boat to sail through the narrow straits, past small islands and skerries, to the Svartisen Pavilion, where you can take in a fantastic view of the glacier. The coach will continue along the beautiful surroundings of the Coastal Highway and, time permitting, make a stop at Saltstraumen to witness the strong tidal current. From here we continue to Bodø, home of the awesome sea eagle, and rejoin Hurtigruten.

Southbound Excursions Kirkenes and the Russian Border (All Year Round) The strategic importance of the border with Russia has given the region a dramatic history. During World War 2, this was the base of a German garrison, from which an offensive was launched to capture Murmansk. The tour will take you through Kirkenes to Storskog, the border station. At Sydvaranger, you can discover iron ore at the disused mines and a stop will be made at Prestfjellet for views of Kirkenes and the fjord area. Mikkelsgammen (13/06 - 08/08) Visit Mikkelsgammen for a slice of Sami life, a short drive from the centre of Hammerfest. In an old turf hut known as a Goahti you will be entertained with stories and the joik, an indigenous form of singing, before being welcomed to sample a range of Sami delicacies.

SAMI CULTURE

Kirkenes - Barents Safari (09/12 - 29/04) A fascinating insight into Sami life, this is an activity excursion available in the winter period. An invigorating snowmobile safari, with you in the driving seat, across the plains of Kirkenes, and if time permits – a session of kick sledding and reindeer lassoing, followed by refreshments served in the warmth of the Lavvo (Sami tent). Activities and availability are dependent on weather conditions. Warm clothing is provided. (Do not forget to bring your driving license). Tromsø Wilderness Centre (28/05 - 27/08) Located just half an hour outside Tromsø, Kvaløya is a beautiful site framed by mountains, sea and plains. Enjoy a guided walk through the history, flora and fauna of the region. Visit two of the country’s best-known sleighdrivers, and their 150 huskies. Here you will learn the basics of dog sledding.

Tromsø - Midnight Sun Summer Concerts in the Arctic Cathedral (08/05 - 01/08) We promise you an awe-inspiring experience at a midnight concert, by sunlight (weather permitting), in the stirring surroundings of the Arctic Cathedral. A varied programme of folk songs, hymns and classical pieces will be performed in front of the largest stained glass window in Europe. Harstad to Sortland (All Year Round) This excursion reveals why Norway’s second largest glacier has been drawing tourists for over a century. Seascape between Svolvær and Stamsund (07/03 - 31/08) The Lofoten Islands are home and workplace for thousands of fishermen who have learned to live in tune with the moods of sea and sky, settling in villages in sheltered bays and taking full advantage of the temperate effect of the Gulf Stream. The charming port of Henningsvær is where art and photographs are displayed, capturing the beauty and drama of life in the islands. On the way to rejoin Hurtigruten in Stamsund, we cross the Gimsøysund Bridge.

Svalbard - Spitsbergen

SJUØYANE

80º

Remote, mysterious, extreme, the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen is the European doorway into the High Arctic. Part of the Svalbard archipelago, it is a land forged by ice and wind, ocean and snow, and by the endless days and endless nights of the polar seasons. Barely populated and bereft of roads, the only way to experience the mysterious majesty of Spitsbergen is from the sea and on foot. Sixty percent of the archipelago is covered in glaciers and snowfields – the rest is jagged peak, Arctic desert and bitter tundra. Treeless and exposed, the island provides a sanctuary for some of the rarest and hardiest flora and fauna on Earth. During the months of high summer, polar bears can be seen at close hand as they roam the wastes in search of food. This supreme, solitary predator covers vast distances, and females can be observed sheltering their young in caves and coves along the coast. Spitsbergen is also home to whitefurred Arctic foxes, reindeer, seals and walruses. At 78˚ north, the tiny capital Longyearbyen (“long year town”) is far closer to the North Pole than any coastal base in Antarctica is to the South Pole. Yet the Gulf Stream manages to warm the local people as well as the breezes off the Greenland Sea, and the town has a buzzing, ski-town feel. There are schools, shops, restaurants, coal mines, even a post office dotted round Spitsbergen, as well as dozens of fascinating historic sites. Our main voyages to Spitsbergen are relaxed and suitable for most people of reasonable fitness. On our Svalbard Ultimate Adventure tours we offer an expedition experience for those looking for some physical activity. These include camping by frozen glaciers, participating in an over-night polar bear watch and spending our days hiking or kayaking amidst the timeless grandeur of one of the last true wildernesses left on Earth. Spitsbergen, in spite of its proximity to the North Pole, has a relatively mild climate compared with other areas at the same latitude. In Longyearbyen the average summer temperature is 6˚C, and the highest ever recorded is 21.3˚C. Rain is scarce, with an average annual rain and snowfall of only 200 – 300 mm. Spitsbergen is above the Arctic Circle and therefore benefits from the Midnight Sun during summer. This means 24 hours of sunlight to experience this unique landscape from April to late August.

BIRDLIFE AND BEARS As fierce as the wastes and weather, the sole king of this realm is the polar bear who shares this distant, beautiful wilderness with any number of kittiwakes, seals, Arctic foxes, whales and walruses. There are estimated to be some 3000 polar bears in the Svalbard archipelago. Magnificent and solitary, these animals grow to a staggering 700 kg and there is every chance that we will come across one of these awe-inspiring beasts as we cruise through the ice floes. There are also estimated to be more than 110 types of migratory birds in this region and our on-board team of experts will ensure that we get the best out of our wildlife viewing, both from the deck of our comfortable vessel and also from our daily shore visits by Polar Cirkel boats. WALRUS AT THE 80˚ PARALLEL The beautiful Svalbard archipelago is host to over 170 species of plants, 110 types of migratory birds, and a mammal population that includes reindeer, walrus, seal, Arctic fox, whale and the majestic polar bear. The Gulf Stream has allowed the island’s 400 km long western coastline to become incredibly rich in animal and plant life, while the remote east is forever under the grips of the Arctic winter. The further north and east we explore, the more ice we will meet and this ice will gradually build up into large ice floes with seals resting on them. On rounding the northwest corner of Spitsbergen, we cross the 80th parallel, just 100 km from the North Pole.
