The
Gothenburg-Borås Project
High-speed railway between West Sweden´s largest cities
GOTHENBURG–BORÅS – part of a new generation of railways
In the coming years, Sweden will invest heavily in infrastructure. A new high-speed railway means great business opportunities for Swedish and international suppliers. The Gothenburg–Borås Project is a part of this investment. Through dialogue with the market and continuous information on upcoming business, we hope to create an interest for suppliers who want to be part of our journey towards a new generation of railways in Sweden.”
A unique infrastructure investment is underway in Sweden. The construction of high-speed railways between the country’s three largest metropolitan regions of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö will be the greatest cohesive urban development project since the first railways were built in the latter half of the 19th century.
Sara Distner, Project Director
The current railway system has reached the limits of its current capacity. On some stretches, there is simply not enough room for any more trains. At the same time, the number of travellers is growing, more train operators want to use the tracks, and larger and larger amounts of goods need to be transported. For this reason, we are planning a brand new railway system for high-speed passenger trains.
West Sweden needs a new railway
Increased capacity and faster transport
The Gothenburg–Borås stretch is one of Sweden’s major commuter routes, and the current single-track railway is not sufficient to meet the demands. With a double track constructed for speeds up to 320 km/hour, travel times between Gothenburg and Borås can be greatly improved and the number of trains can be significantly increased. Better transport communications that make it easier to commute will create conditions for regional development.
A high-speed railway will provide increased capacity and faster transport between major cities in Sweden. At the same time, we can increase regional traffic and freight transport on existing railways. The new high-speed railway is primarily financed through government funds. In order to speed up the expansion, the government has appointed an organisation to negotiate with municipalities and regions regarding co-financing with the purpose of creating more housing, a better labour market and sustainable travel.

The new railway is to pass through a tunnel underneath Göteborg Landvetter Airport – which receives six million passengers annually. From a new station underneath the airport, travellers will have direct access to departure and arrival halls. A new railway tunnel in Gothenburg is planned to be completed in 2026. It will then be possible to take the train to the airport from three new centrally located stations.
Funding for one part The Gothenburg–Borås Project is divided into three parts. The Mölnlycke–Bollebygd stretch has funding and construction is planned to begin in 2020.

UPCOMING PROCUREMENTS
3. Landvetter station and Landvetterberget • Scope: construction work, slab track work, tunnel installations, lining and station installations. • Type of contract: Design and build. • Local information: one km of double-track tunnel with station spaces and two separate single-track tunnels for highspeed trains 2,7 km each. Collaboration with Swedavia, who owns and manages Göteborg Landvetter Airport, becomes an important success factor along with special requirements considering the airport operations.
These are the procurement packages that we plan to carry out between 2018 and 2020. The packages and their contents may be subject to change. Our procurements will be announced on the Swedish Transport Administration website.
1. Mölnlycke station • Scope: construction work and REST (Rail, Electrical, Signal and Telecom i.e. railway work). • Type of contract: Design and build – ECI (Early Contractor Involvement) • Local information: the contract will be carried out in a small but busy town centre with ongoing traffic, both road and rail. Collaboration and planning will be an important factor for success.
4. Landvetterberget–Bollebygd • Scope: construction work and slab track work, including tunnel installations and lining. • Type of contract: Design and build. • Local information: the section is approximately 12 km, including four tunnels, of which the longest will be around 1000 m, and seven bridges, of which the two longest will be approximately 400 m and 800 m.
