I

hope you are all doing well. February has been a relatively calm month travel wise. Hopefully some of you did get your coaches out. Lynn and I had too many commitments to do any camping, but plan on trying to get out in March.

Of course April is our first rally at Pismo Beach in a few years. Hope you all can make that one; it is always fun with many things to do on the central coast. We have a number of outings lined up as we get into spring and summer. I am looking forward to attending as many as possible, and continuing to develop long term friendships. I had an interesting phone call last night. The fellow that called had found my phone number on the website. He was looking for a number or contact at National RV for a warranty issue. Apparently he recently purchased a Dolphin motor home on a Toyota chassis. While doing research he found an outstanding warranty recall which stated he should contact National RV. The recall had to do with the welds used to make the rear axle into a dual set of tires. When I told him National RV had been gone since late 2007, he laughed. He said that maybe he should buy a newer coach next time. I would like to thank Kay Thomas for her efforts taking on the membership duties from Diane Rogers. Diane did a superb job for a long time. The current membership is at 144 coaches. We have a new member couple, Ray & Sylvia Cavins, who I would like to welcome to the group. Kay has mailed out the new membership roster booklets. Hopefully we will begin capturing your pictures for our new member gallery on the website. Darryl Sobelman is working on the gallery section. I will ask Paul Speaker and several others to take pictures of you as couples or individuals, to post on the member only section of the website. Happy Travels, Sandy Mayer

F YOU MISSED THE JANUARY 2012, QUARTZSITE RALLY YOU MISSED A GOOD ONE. THIS RALLY HAD MANY ATTRACTIONS. NOT ONLY DID YOU MISS THE THOUSANDS OF VENDORS BUT YOU MISS THE ON SITE FUN. EACH EVENING IN CAMP WE HAD CAMPFIRES. THE EVENINGS WERE OF SHARING TALL TALES OR AS SOMEONE CALLED IT “TOLD OUR LIES”. THANK YOU EVERYONE THAT BROUGHT FIREWOOD TO SHARE THAT KEEPT OUR CAMPFIRES GOING. WE SHARED ABOUT THE PURCHASES WE MADE. WE ALSO HAD TO RACK OUR BRAINS TO REMEMBER WHAT VENDOR WE PURCHASED ITEMS FROM AND WHERE THEY WERE LOCATED. SOMEONE ALSO THOUGHT THEY NEEDED TO HAVE ONE. WEDNESDAY JANUARY. 18TH SEVERAL DOLPHINS ARRIVED . A FEW COUPLES SET OUT TO FIND THE POW WOW SHOW LOCATED ACROSS THE FREEWAY FROM OUR CAMP SITE. THEY WENT TO EXPERIENCE THE SHOW TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT. THE SHOW IS A DISPLAY OF VENDORS WHO SELL GEMS AND MINERALS IN ALL FORMS. MANY VENDORS SELL THE ROUGH FORMS WHILE OTHERS HAVE PRODUCTS TO SELL THAT ARE CREATED BY ARTISANS ALL OVER THE WORLD. THE GENERAL THEME OF THE POW WOW IS 75% ROCK RELATED. IN DAYS GONE BY THE SHOW IS WHAT BROUGHT VENDORS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO THE SMALL TOWN OF QUARTZSITE. A BIG DRAW TO RV`ERS TODAY IS TO BUY NEW OR USED RV`S, SOLAR PANELS, RV RELATED ITEMS AND TO VISIT THE VENDORS WITH MANY SELECTIONS TO PURCHASE.. THOUSANDS OF RV`S ARE SEEN THROUGH THE WINTER AS MANY STAY TO ENJOY THE MILDER CLIMATE . THURSDAY JANUARY 19TH EACH COACH CONTRIBUTED CHILI OR TRIMMINGS FOR THE KETTLE OVER THE FIRE. AFTER THE DAY OF FUN AND REST THE DINNER MENU BROUGHT EVERYONE TO SHARE MANY CREATIVE ADDITIONS TO THE TABLE TO GARNISH OUR HOT BOWLS OF CHILI. SEVERAL ALSO SET OUT DELICIOUS SALADS. FRIDAY JANUARY 20TH THE TYSON WELLS SELL-O-RAMA OPENED. MOST OF US ENJOYED THE WALK THROUGH THE GROUNDS TO SEE WHAT THE VENDORS OFFERED. SEEN IN CAMP WERE THE USUAL PURCHASES PLUS MANY ADDITIONS. “WHERE DID WE GET THEM?”, “WELL OVER THERE!”. FOR DINNER THE TRAILBOSSES PROVIDED A PIZZA PARTY, SALAD AND MARGARITAS. SOME CONTRIBUTIONS WERE MORE DELICIOUS SALADS . EACH COACH RECEIVED A PIZZA WITH TWO TOPPINGS OF THEIR CHOICE, SELECTIONS WERE MADE AT THE REGISTRATION TABLE. THANKS TO “BLYTHE DOMINOS PIZZA”, THOSE DOLPHINS THAT OFFERED THEIR HUGE THERMO BAGS TO CARRY THE PIZZAS HOME AND THE GUYS WHO DROVE TO BLYTHE TO PICK UP THE PIZZAS AND SALADS. THE PIZZAS WERE PIPPING HOT WHEN WE RECEIVED THEM. THOSE OF US THAT ATTENDED THE FMCA “INTO” CHAPTER RALLY SITE, THE DOLPHIN CLUB RALLY AT LA MESA RV SALES SITE, IN QUARTSITE ,WILL REMEMBER SUNNY AND CAROL GILLESPIE . SUNNY SERVES AS FMCA INTO CHAPTER PRESIDENT . CAROL IS HIS RIGHT HAND WOMAN, SHE ALSO DOES TERRIFIC CRAFT CLASSES. THEY CONTACTED HOSPITALITY CHAIRPERSON DAVE BARR TO SCHEDULE A VISIT WITH OUR GROUP DURING THE PIZZA PARTY WHEN ALL WERE GATHERED. SPECIAL THANKS GO TO THEM FOR TAKING TIME OUT OF THEIR BUSY SCHEDULE OF VISITING AS MANY CHAPTERS STAYING IN QUARTZSITE AS POSSIBLE. WE WERE FORTUNATE TO SEE THEM. SATURDAY, JANUARY 21ST THE BIG RV TENT SHOW OPENED. THE WIND BLEW HARD! SOME HARDY ONES WALKED OVER TO BATTLE THE WIND AND THE CROWD. OFTEN A LOOSING BATTLE. NO FIRE WAS AVAILABLE DUE TO THE HIGH WINDS. THE GATHERING WAS POSTPONED TILL SUNDAY NIGHT. SUNDAY JANUARY 22ND SOME RIGS PULLED OUT. A GROUP OF SIX VEHICLES CARAVANED TO THE NELLIE E MINE SITE DESERT BAR. A FUN TIME WAS HAD BY ALL. LUNCH WAS AVAILABLE AT “THE BAR”, ANOTHER OPTION WAS “BOBBY D`S 50`S DINNER” OUTSIDE OF PARKER, AZ. WHEN THE GROUP ARRIVED AT THE NELLIE E MINE SITE WE HAD ONE MISHAP. THE JEEP LIBERTY KEYS WERE LOCKED INSIDE THE VEHICLE. OWNERS TO REMAIN NAMELESS! THE GROUP WAS VERY SUPPORTIVE WHILE THE MEN USED MANY STRATAGIES TO SOLVE THE PROBLE. ONE WIRE CLOTHES HANGER AND SEVEN MEN FINALLY SOLVED THE PROBLEM. GEE WHO WERE THOSE LADIES WHO WENT TO THE BAR TO GET A WIRE CLOTHES HANGER? BACK TO THE PROBLEM AT HAND. ONE PATRON OF THE BAR WAS SEEN USING TOOLS OUT OF THE TOOL BOX AVAILABLE. HE USED A SCREW DRIVER AND A WIRE TO PROBE THE LOCKS IN THE DRIVERS DOOR THEN THE CARGO AREA LOCK. ONE HANDSOME KNIGHT IN SHINNING ARMOR SAVED THE DAY HE HAD TO BE FORCEFUL TO GET THE MAN TO STOP AND DESIST. THANK YOU DEAR HANDSOME KNIGHT “SANDY” FOR SAVING THIS DAMSEL FROM BASHING THE GUY IN THE HEAD. LESSON LEARNED: ALWAYS CARRY A CLOTHES HANGER OR PUT

Dolphin Club Bids Farewell to Former Chapter President Bill Ashman 2/9/27 – 2/6/12 Monday, February 13th was dreary and cold with rain making a valiant effort to fall from the heavens on the Funeral service for Bill at Loma Vista Memorial Park in Fullerton. T.J. and Marilyn were in attendance along with me and Edda representing the Dolphin Club and to show support for Lillian and their family. Upon arrival Bill’s flag draped open casket could be seen surrounded buy flower arrangements. Those in attendance spoke softly to each other and greeted Lillian with hugs and words of encouragement. Service in the little chapel was short but very warm in spirit. It started off with “You Are the Wind beneath My Wings” then some poignant prayer, some words of fond memories from family and friends. Then the played the song, “Always”, by Patsy Cline, which was a longtime favorite of both Bill and Lillian. I think it brought a tear to the eyes of all present. After the service it was only a short walk to the grave side service which included a Military Honor Guard from the United States Army to send Bill off in the manner due a WWII veteran. The last rally the Ashman’s attended was the 20th Anniversary Celebration Rally in Hemet, CA in March, 2009. Farewell old friend, we will all miss you.

ALASKA 2011 In June 2011 Brian and I started on a fantastic trip to Alaska with Fantasy RV Tours along with 19 other coaches plus our wagon master and tail gunner. We came from all over the United States from Main to Florida and gathered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho at Blackwell Island RV Park for our welcome party at Cedars Floating Restaurant in the Spokane River. All of our coaches and tow cars were numbered for identification throughout the trip. We were all given a copy of the Milepost, a log book describing each day’s trip like mileage, estimated time, points of interest, best fuel stops, etc. Each night before travel we had a driver’s meeting to give instructions for the next day. The wagon master would leave first to set up things at the next RV park and the rest of us could leave anytime we wanted and do whatever we wanted as long as we arrived at the next park approximately at the designated time. The tail gunner was the last to leave and made sure we all got to the park. If anyone had trouble he would stay with them until the problem was fixed. We traveled as little at 86 miles to a high of 286 miles per day. We started out in Alberta, Canada traveling to Radium Hot Springs, then on through Banff National Park to Lake Louise. (Our GPS did not want us to go through Banff N.P., it kept telling us to turn around and go around it!) We arrived at Lake Louise and ate lunch at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel. We had a bus tour of the Lake Louise and Banff area and Moraine Lake which had ice and snow still in and around it. Two girls in bikinis had just come out of the lake! I guess it was on a dare. We then traveled through the Columbia Ice Field on the way to Jasper stopping for lunch at the Ice Fields Center. We were taken out on the Athabasca Glacier where we could walk around and check out the blue ice and even pick up and taste the ice. We then traveled on to Jasper and Whistler’s Campground. The next day we rode the Jasper Tramway to the top of the mountain. This was our first encounter with mosquitoes. Just out of Jasper in the town of Hinton is where Brian and I had our first mishap. It seems that in Canada they don’t mark their diesel pumps with a green handle. They are maybe black, yellow or no color at all. Well we started filling at a Husky Station with a green handle pump and after 18 liters of fuel it back lashed and Brian said this smells like gasoline, which it was. Well we couldn’t start the engine with gasoline in the tank so we called Good Sam but they couldn’t help. The station manager said that that happened 5 or 6 times each year but he had a few business cards of local people who could help. One man came out to the station and helped. He had to buy a pump, and containers to pump the fuel into. We had 40 gallons of diesel in the tank along with 18 liters of gasoline. Well he had to disconnect the filler tube to the fuel tank by using the RV jacks and pump out the ruined fuel. He then reconnected everything and we filled up with diesel. This took about 3 hours tying up the service station island with our coach and the repair mans truck on the other side. Our tail gunner stayed with us the whole time! We then traveled to Dawson Creek and Northern Lights RV Park. This is mile marker 0 and the start of the Alaska Highway, and this was where we got our first rock in the windshield from a passing truck! We had a catered dinner at the Northern Lights RV Park. The next day we had our pictures taken in front of the Start of the Alaska Highway Sign. We then traveled to Fort Nelson, and then to Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park where upon entering the park there were Bison right at the entrance! This is where we encountered our only other encounter with mosquitoes! We then traveled on to Watson Lake, B.C and the Downtown RV Park. We had a pot luck dinner then some of us went to the Signpost Forrest and some went to the Northern Lights Museum. Brian misplaced our sign which was a National RV Owners Club Sign so we couldn’t put up our sign. (It turned up later in the trip in the clothes hamper!) We then traveled to Teslin and then to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory and the Pioneer Motel and RV Park where we had a catered dinner. Whitehorse is quite a nice city

and the capital of the Yukon Territory. We had a tour of the city, a stage show and did some shopping. The weather vane at the airport is a real DC-3 plane on a post! We traveled to Dawson City, Yukon Territory where we had a walking tour of the town, Diamond Tooth Gertie stage show and Carolyn in you group gave haircuts. We visited Midnight Dome which is a mountain above Dawson City where you can see for miles. This is where we cross the Yukon River into Alaska on a barge that only holds about 3 RVs at a time. It’s been 3 weeks to finally reach Alaska. Crossing the Yukon was fun but the Top of The World Highway to Chicken Alaska was a challenge. We stayed one night in Chicken and the RV Park had 15 amp electric for about 15 minutes then it went out. We dry camped that night. It seems that the electric in Chicken is powered by a generator and it shut down for the night. The next day we had a personal tour of a gold dredge that was brought to Chicken from a creek that had been abandoned years ago. It was dismantled and brought to Chicken and reassembled. From Chicken we traveled to Tok, the official entry po int to Alaska. It was in Tok that we were able to wash our rigs for the first time and boy did they need it. From Tok we traveled to Valdez where we purchased our fishing licenses had a boat tour of Prince William Sound and a trip to the Columbia and Meares Glaciers and a dinner put on by the RV Park. We then traveled to Palmer then to Sterling where we had a king crab dinner at the park. Then on to Homer and the Spit where we went Halibut fishing on an all day boat. We all caught our limit of 2 Halibut by the end of the day. The weather was perfect and the sea calm. The next day we picked up our fish which was flash frozen and packaged whichever way we requested. We wished we could have stayed longer in Homer. Next we traveled to Seward, AK where we hiked up to the Exit Glacier for pictures and had a trip to the Alaska Sea life Center where we bought some great jackets at half price. The Sea life Center is like our Long Beach Aquarium. On to Anchorage and Costco! The RV Park is right across the street from Costco where we did some needed shopping. We visited the Alaska Wild Berry Park and petted some reindeer which are domesticated caribou and saw a movie about Alaska and had dinner there. We then had a bus tour of Anchorage and visited the Alaska Native Heritage Center. The weather on the trip was very good and we had the air conditioner on in Anchorage, Dawson City and Fairbanks. We were in shorts and tee shirts most of the time. Our next stop was Denali National Park. We had a marvelous tour of Denali; saw many bears, sheep, caribou and moose. The mountain was clear all day which is unusual according to our tour guide. He took pictures with his video camera which showed up on video screens in the park tour bus. We ordered the DVD of “our” tour which arrived when we returned home. Some of us went white water rafting in the Nenana River which flowed next to the RV Park and some went ATVing and got all muddy. After 3 days at Denali we left for Fairbanks where we stayed for 4 days. We had a trip to the University of Alaska’s museum and their Georgeson Botanical Garden with huge vegetables because of the nearly 24 hours of daylight. Some of us went by plane on a tour above the arctic circle but that’s expensive so some of us went to North Pole Alaska which is right down the road from Fairbanks. Saw Santa and bought gifts. We had a riverboat cruise on a sternwheeler, visited the Alaska pipeline and panned for gold at the Eldorado Gold Mine. I got $22.50 worth and Brian got $45.00. We again went to Tok to start our return to the lower 48. We had a great dinner at Destruction Bay at Kluane Lake, BC. We traveled to Haines, AK where we visited the American Bald Eagle Foundation and got instructions about boarding the ferry to Skagway. Very early in the morning we had to get in line at the ferry terminal and unhook our tow vehicles to await the arrival of the ferry. Getting all of our coaches on the ferry was an experience! Most of the tow cars were driven on first and then the coaches according to size and available room. Brian was the last to drive on and he had to back down the ramp with everyone watching from the upper decks of the ferry. We finally got loaded and were on our way to Skagway about an hour away. Unloading was much easier and the RV Park was just a few feet from the dock. The next day we had a trip to Juneau on the Juneau Fjord Express which was for our group only. We saw many whales, sea otters, seals, bald eagles and water falls on the way down and back. In Juneau we given a bus tour and then allowed to walk around on our own. Later we were taken for a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier which was very interesting. After returning to Skagway that evening, Brian and I had a very good dinner at a local restaurant. The next day we went on the White Pass and Yukon Route railway to the top of the Chilkoot Pass where the 49ers had to pack in their supplies of 1 ton before they could start gold mining. That evening we saw the Soapy Smith Vaudeville Show. Soapy Smith was an unsavory character that ran Skagway during the gold rush. After 3 days in Skagway we traveled up the highway on the opposite side of the valley from the train route for one night stops at Teslin, YT, Watson Lake, YT, Iskut, BC, then 2 nights at Stewart/ Hyder, BC which is in a rain forest and was wet and rainy. This was where we were to see bears catching salmon but no bears were seen to speak of. We then spent one night at Fort Telkwa, BC, Prince George, BC, and Cache Creek, BC where we stayed at the Historic Hat Creek Ranch where we had a tour of the ranch and a stage coach ride. This was also a place where people would come during the gold rush to go by stage coach to the gold fields. It took 3 weeks to get to the gold fields by stage. On to Rosedale, BC and the Hell’s Gate Air tram over the Fraser River where we had a lunch and ice cream. We then stopped at Camperland RV Park over night. The next day on the way to the U.S. border we stopped at Minter Gardens which is like Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC. We crossed into the U.S. with no problem and stayed for 3 days at Fildago Bay RV Park in Anacortes, WA. where we had our farewell dinner and said our goodbyes. All in all it was a fantastic trip! Basement Air Filter I may be a little slower than some, but I found out there is a filter in the Dolphin basement air conditioner. Of course I found out about it from a fellow member, as there is no real information about it that I have located. The location is VERY convenient, if you are spider man and have three arms. This filter gets really dirty, so you should change or clean it on a regular schedule. The filter is located under the bed towards the rear of the coach. It is located over the intake vent and held down with four screws. One important note, DO NOT DROP THE SCREWS INTO THE VENT. I managed to not drop any, but retrieval does not look very easy if you do. I opted to replace the filter. The one I found at Home Depot was twice the size I needed so I cut it in half and will use the spare piece next time I change it. You can wash or blow out the original one if you do not want to replace it.
