NEW CONCEPTS FOR PSYCHIATRIC CLINICS

2 december 2013

We don´t believe that architecture can cure people BUT we believe that attractive environments can enhance the healing process

NORMALITY- AWAY FROM INSTITUTION - integrate psychiatry and somatic care - look for normality, avoid the institution

DIGNITY - support

the patient’s self-image - an overall good concept, well executed in detail - single rooms and professional treatment areas - avoid “provocations”, you act as you are supposed to

SAFETY AND BEAUTY - the issue of safety, “a faithful friend” through the project - looking for a pleasant care environment

ACCESS TO NATURE - give direct access to a garden within the ward - support views towards the garden and the surrounding landscape - use ”natural” materials - give the patient the possibility to open their own “bedroom window”

A FREE AND OPEN ATMOSPHERE - avoid associations to power and force - replace the fence and walls by embracing buildings - support good overview without that “watchtower feeling” - the staff should be together with the patients

ACTIVITY AND SOCIALIZATION - place all the patient areas in” the very middle”, in the heart - create “safe” and intimate seats outside of the public areas - design the non-corridor ward - make it possible to stroll around in different ways and without “dead ends”

SOCIALIZATION STEP BY STEP - get out of bed and out of the room - socialize, being on your own is often a part of the disease - different places with different degrees of privacy; from private to public - create safe and intimate places on the outskirts of the public areas

SMALL UNITS WITHIN THE WARD - units for 3-5 patients - promotes increased interactivity - each unit has a small “social corner” - patients with the same diagnoses might be gathered - permits the separation of patients from each other

ROOMS ON PATIENTS TERMS - the patient’s desires and requests should be met as far as possible - the possibility of seclusion improves the patient's social skills - special action must bee taken to prevent suicide and self harm - do not plan for a patient in bed

ON NEUTRAL GROUND - neutral rooms for consultation - cross-disciplinary team for care and treatment - get away from patriarchal and authoritative tradition - support an equal conversation on a neutral ground - encourage the patients and relatives to take part in the care process

The ”Hearth”

The Patientroom

From the jury evaluation:

"Simply spectacular. The use of natural light and its surroundings will

provide patients with an experience that will aid significantly in the healing process. They have achieved a ‘non-institutional’ feel (…). The patient room has no design clutter, rather, it has a soothing, monastic feel, focussing on the natural surrounds. A cerebral solution to a mental problem."

– the buildings 4. Sonnenberg Clinic Stuttgart, DE 3rd prize architectural competition 2013

From the competition jury evaluation:

” Due to the special architecture and the landscape design, the proposal stands out of average hospital buildings and represents a good approach for the renewal of the Sonnenberg Clinic "
