Surveying to grow our purses The NCHA, assisted by Grotta Marketing Research Company, will survey cutting horse contestants and fans during this year’s Ford NCHA Super Stakes. The interview takes about five minutes, and contains questions about the number of days you are in town for NCHA events, and the things you purchase while you are here. The data collected from these surveys will assist us in utilizing new Texas legislation to grow our purses for the NCHA “Triple Crown” events. If you are asked to be interviewed, we appreciate your willingness to help! ★

Daegan Arnold, 23, Kermit, TX, won the Ford NCHA Super Stakes Amateur Classic with 223 points on homegrown KC Again, by King Of Clarks.

D

aegan Arnold, winner of the 2006 NCHA Summer Spec tac u la r A mateu r Classic/Challenge, claimed his second Triple Crown event title with a 223-point win last night in the Ford NCHA Super Stakes Amatuer Classic. “I had to hustle quite a bit and stay up with the cows,” said Arnold, who rode KC Again, his Classic/Challenge Amateur champion. “It went real fast. Those good runs never seem like they last very long. It’s the bad runs that seem to take forever.” Arnold worked as the third rider in the second set; Lincoln Clifton was the high-scoring rider at that point on MH Smart

Playboy. Later in the set, Lucious Randle scored 219 points on Dual Rey Lena, which held for the reserve championship, with Clifton in third place. KC Again is a full brother to Rioismysister, the horse that Arnold’s father Kevin rode to win the 2001 NCHA Non-Pro Super Stakes and the NCHA Non-Pro Derby. Arnold’s grandfather, Jack Arnold, rode King Of Clarks, sire of KC Again and Rioismysister’s. The Arnolds raise cattle and horses in Kermit, TX, where they also own a business that manufactures a natural fertilizer that destroys bacteria. Continued on page 2

Left to right: Lucious Randle, Jr. rode Dual Rey Lena, by Dual Rey, to score 219 points for the Ford NCHA Super Stakes Amateur Classic reserve championship; Lincoln Clifton, Oklahoma City, placed third with 217.5 points aboard MH Smart Playboy, by Playboysalittlesmart; Colleen Holt, Weatherford, TX, split 4th/5th with 217 on Hyadualin Darlin, by Dual Pep.

Lucious Randle, Jr. Lucious Randle, Jr., MD, has more to celebrate today than his 54th brithday. After nearly a 15-year hiatus from showing, Randle, an opthalmologist from Houston, TX won his first title in Will Rogers Coliseum. “I’ve been waiting a long time for this,” said Randle, who took up cutting in 1984 with trainer Barbra Schulte. “I’ve been in the top 10 before, but never reserve.” Randle rode Dual Rey Lena, by Dual Rey, who he raised out of RBS Lenas Star Girl, a mare that Schulte rode to win the Kansas Futurity. Schulte also trained Dual Rey Lena. “I tried to watch the judging to see what they wanted,” noted Randle. It looked like they wanted us to be a little more aggressive. “I had marked real high on my horse in Houston, so I knew he could do it. As the run went on, I got a little more comfortable and was able to use him more.” Dual Rey Lena had been laid off for most of last year, following an injury, and this was Randle’s third time to show him. “He’s always had a good disposition,” Randle noted. “He’s one of the best that we’ve bred.” Randle and Dual Rey Lena won their first outing at a cutting in Nueces, Texas, then placed third in the AQHA Amateur championship at the Houston Livetsock Show.
