The Pack has won 13 of the last 14 meetings with Wake at Carter-Finley Stadium, with the only home loss since 1984 coming in 2006. Overall at home, State has posted a 42-21-5 mark.

NO ROAMING CHARGES The Wolfpack won’t have to wander very far from its home den during the 2013 football season, as NC State is playing eight games in Carter-Finley Stadium and two others in the state of North Carolina. The Pack won’t have to play a game outside of its home state until Oct. 26, when the squad heads to Florida State. The only other game played outside North Carolina will be the Boston College contest on Nov. 16. HIT THE ROAD, PACK NC State is leaving Carter-Finley Stadium to play for the first time in 2013 when it heads west for the quick trip to Winston-Salem this weekend. It’s the latest the Wolfpack has played its first road game since 2005 (Oct. 6). It marks the third time in the last five years that State has played its first league road game at Wake Forest. PUSH ‘EM BACK Not only has the Wolfpack defense been proficient at limiting big plays for the opposition, but State has done a good job pushing the opponent backwards. The Wolfpack leads the ACC and ranks second nationally in tackles for loss, with 37 stops behind the line (9.3/game) - including a season-high 12 vs. Clemson. LIMITED GAINS One of the goals for the Wolfpack defense in 2013 is to limit the opposition’s big plays. Four games into the season, NC State has come close to accomplishing that goal - no easy task considering that two of the offenses it has faced, La. Tech and Clemson, are known for making big plays. This season, the Pack has just given up two plays longer than 30 yards - a 40-yard pass against Louisiana Tech and a 38-yard run late in the fourth quarter versus Central Michigan.

NC State vs. Wake Forest, Game Notes NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE Who needs depth? We’ve got Joe Thuney! In 2013, two returning starters on the offensive line have lost time due to injury. The solution to both of those problems has been the same: redshirt sophomore Joe Thuney. Thuney spent all of last season at center, where he played in eight games. He spent spring practice and preseason camp at right guard. But when right tackle Tyson Chandler was forced to miss the opener with an injury, Thuney started in his spot. In the second game of the season versus Richmond, he was back at his regular spot - right guard. Prior to the game against third-ranked Clemson, left tackle Rob Crisp went out with an injury. Thuney, who had never had played with his left hand down in his career, was the solution. He has now started each of the last two games at that position and against Central Michigan, posted the highest coach’s grade of an offensive lineman all year.

PICK-ING IT UP Although the NC State defense finished in the middle of the ACC pack last season in most defensive categories, one thing it has been known for was picking off the opposition. The Wolfpack defense led the league each of the last two years in interceptions, with a school-record 27 in 2011 and 16 in 2012. However, this year has been a different story as the Pack did not pick off a pass in the first three games. That all changed Saturday against Central Michigan. On the Chippewas’ second offensive play, linebacker D.J. Green stepped in front of a pass and took it 37-yards in the opposite direction for State’s first score of the day. Later in the game, safety Josh Stanley made an acrobatic touchdown-saving pick in the endzone and fellow safety Hakim Jones also had an INT. Despite not recording an INT until the fourth game, the Pack’s pass defense still has limited the opponents. Only one opponent has thrown for 300 yards, Richmond’s Michael Strauss had exactly 300, and no opposing wide receiver has gone over 100 yards through four games.

The only position on the offensive line that Thuney has not played (so far!) is left guard. QBU In week four of the NFL season, almost 10 percent of the league’s starting quarterbacks were NC State alums. No other school in the nation can boast three starting signal callers in the NFL and only two other schools have two (Florida State and USC). Philip Rivers, who still holds the ACC career record with 13,582 yards of total offense, is in his 10th season with the San Diego Chargers - his eighth as the starter. On Sunday, he finished 35 of 42 with an 83-percent completion percentage that set a singlegame record for a QB throwing for at least 400 yards. Russell Wilson, who ranks eighth on the league’s career total offense charts, was a rookie sensation for the Seattle Seahawks last season and is in his second campaign as the starter. On Sunday, he led his squad to an OT win at Houston to give Seattle its first 4-0 start in franchise history. Last Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers named rookie Mike Glennon their starter for their game against Arizona. Glennon, a third round selection in the 2013 draft, ranks 30th in ACC history in total offense. A two-year starter for the Wolfpack, he was 2443 with one TD in his debut, a 13-10 loss. TACKLE BY CALDWELL Senior linebacker Robert Caldwell is definitely making his presence known for the Wolfpack. The Pack’s starting middle linebacker is currently tied for second in the ACC in tackles with 9.2 per game. Against Clemson, he had a dozen tackles and made three stops behind the line of scrimmage. He is tied for third in the league and 11th nationally in tackles for loss with 6.5 for the year. Caldwell did not see action from scrimmage in 2012 after transferring from College of the Desert JUCO. He arrived to camp late from JUCO and did not have much time to learn the Pack playbook, but he did see action in every game on special teams.

As part of the team’s quest for the goal, Doeren introduced his “12 Commandments” to the squad back in the spring - a list of attributes that he believes in and wants his program to exhibit. He held a team meeting for each individual characteristic during the spring to talk about what it meant to him. CLOSING OUT In the preseason, there was much talk about how the Pack’s new up-tempo offense hoped to wear down the opposing defense late in the game. Four games into the 2013 campaign, however, it seems that it is the Pack defense that is having Niklas Sade that effect on the opposition.

In the 60 combined minutes of fourth quarter action through four games, the Pack defense has given up an average of 35.8 rushing yards, 38.5 passing yards, and Note: Injury does not count against starting streak 74.3 yards of total offense. The Pack has forced five punts and five turnovers in 14 fourth quarter opponent possessions. The opponent’s numbers were inflated after the win over Central Michigan, as the Pack entered the fourth quarter up 38-0 and rested a majority of the starters that final quarter. In the season opener against Louisiana Tech, a team that led the NCAA in total offense last season, the Pack gave up just one first down, 2 yards rushing, and no yards passing. The Bulldogs had the ball for just 2:40 of the final 15 minutes, and were forced to punt twice and also had a fumble. PUT A RUSH ON IT NC State enters the Wake Forest game with an average of 207.2 rushing yards per game. The Wolfpack ranks fifth in the ACC this week in rushing. Running the football has not been the Pack’s specialty in recent seasons - in fact the last time a Wolfpack team finished the season with more than 200 rushing yards per game was in 1992 and has only done so once since 1982. SMITH DOES IT ALL Rashard Smith could be the most valuable player on the team after the first third of the season - he certainly is the most used. The senior wide receiver is leading the team in receptions with 20 (a mark that ranks eighth in the ACC), receiving yards with 235, and has averaged 16.3 yard per punt return (second in the ACC and 12th nationally). He has also rushed for 92 yards in 2013. Against Central Michigan, he had a spectacular punt return, crossing field to streak 87 yards for a touchdown. That tied as the thirdlongest punt return in school history.

Sade, who was ranked the third-best kicker in the country coming out of high school, struggled toward the end of the 2012 campaign. Over the last six games of the season, he hit just six of his 13 field goal attempts (six of those seven misses were from 42+ yards). This season has been a different story. Sade has connected on nine of his 10 attempts, including three from 45+ yards., and ranks third nationally in FGs. His four field goals made in the opener tied as the second-highest tally in school history and he personally outscored the entire Louisiana Tech squad, 16-14. Against Richmond, he connected on 46 and 19 yarders before nailing the game-winner from 48 yards with 33 seconds on the clock. Sade has also hit all 14 of his extra points this season and is 104-107 for his career. Of his 26 kickoffs in 2013, 20 have been touchbacks. QUICK RECOVERIES NC State is tied for seventh in the nation in fumbles and leads the ACC this young season. The Wolfpack has taken a half

dozen opponent miscues, with defensive linemen making the recovery on five of the six. THOMAS SETTLES IN The decision of who would start at quarterback for the Wolfpack in 2013 was one that went down to the wire. Head coach Dave Doeren did not announce who his starter would be until the Pack took the field for the opener as transfers Pete Thomas and Brandon Mitchell battled for the job. Mitchell, a graduate student who transferred from Arkansas in July, got the nod. Mitchell appeared in 21 games for the Razorbacks, but had played wide receiver in 2012. The decision looked like a good one as he stood under center in the opener for three promising offensive series - two of which were 65 and 75 yard touchdown drives. He completed all three of this throws for a quick gain of 93 yards before a broken foot sent him to the sideline where he will remain for six weeks or so. Thomas, a junior who started 21 games under center at Colorado State, has come in over the last 15 quarters and posted numbers that have him ranked fifth in the ACC in total offense (249.8/game), sixth in passing (226.5/game) and has even rushed for 93 yards. THE DOEREN OF A NEW ERA The Dave Doeren era at NC State got off to an aupicious beginning, as the Wolfpack soared to a 40-14 win over Louisiana Tech. NC State vs. Wake Forest, Game Notes William & Mary. VERSA-TEAL Redshirt junior defensive tackle Thomas Teal has been a stalwart in the middle for the Pack this season. He is tied for second on thea team with four tackles for loss in four games and has played the secondhighest amount of snaps among defensive linemen with 153. On Saturday against Central Michigan, when starting end Darryl Cato-Bishop and backup end Forrest West were out with injuries, the 6-1, 303-lb. Teal saw action at defensive end to help stop the run. FRESH LEGS The Wolfpack’s defensive front has been the most active spot on the field at times during the young season. Eleven players saw action on the d-line in the season opener, nine played against Richmond and 10 were in versus Clemson. Ten d-linemen played against against Central Michigan, even though a starter (Darryl Cato-Bishop) and top sub (Forrest West) were out with injuries. That position is certainly the most stable in terms of depth as line coach Ryan Nielsen is able to go three deep at each position. Eleven first-year frosh have played for the Wolfpack thus far, while two - wide receivers Bra’Lon Cherry and Marquez Valdes-Scantling - have started. That was the second-highest rushing touchdown total ever for a Wolfpack freshman (T.A. McLendon had five vs. Texas Tech in 2012) and marked the most rushing TDs in a game for a Pack players since Jamelle Eugene had three in 2007. NC State vs. Wake Forest, Game Notes At 5-9, 213, Dayes is a compact player who runs low and has great vision, according to his head coach. He rushed for over 1,800 yards last season at Cypress Bay High School, scoring 31 TDs. He played at the 8A level and rushed for 174 yards and five touchdowns in the 8A championship game.

ACC (Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer will be 67 in October) and 32 years younger than the oldest BCS conference coach (Bill Snyder of Kansas State will be 74 in October).

THE TURNOVER BATTLE One of the Wolfpack’s team goals for 2013 is to win the turnover battle. The Pack is certainly doing a good job in terms of causing and recovering fumbles with six - a mark that leads the ACC and ranks seventh nationally.

After Saturday, the Pack now has three interceptions to add to that total - making it nine takeaways for the season. Unfortunately, the Wolfpack has also turned the ball over eight times - with five interceptions thrown and three fumbles lost. SACK ‘EM UP NC State has tallied nine sacks in its first four games - a stat that isn’t overly impressive unless you look at the opposition. Richmond allowed just five sacks in the entire 2012 campaign. The Wolfpack tallied three in the win against the Spiders. GREEN-ER PASTURES The happiest man on the field when the Wolfpack kicked off against Louisiana Tech in the season opener might have been the guy wearing No. 31 on defense. Linebacker D.J. Green was back in action after missing the entire 2012 campaign due to an NCAA suspension. Green started six games at strong side linebacker in 2011 before being sidelined with an abdominal injury. He came back and started one contest but a foot injury ended his season. In an attempt to gain weight following the injury, he took a nutritional supplement without checking with the sports medicine staff and ended up with the suspension. Green, who was allowed to practice with the team, promised at the time to “work hard every day in practice to help try to make my teammates better.” That hard work has paid off and he will be back in his starting slot at LB when the Bulldogs snap the ball for the first time. He tallied five tackles for loss during his abbreviated 2011 campaign, while also pulling down an interception. He played in 13 games as a true freshman in 2010 at the strong safety spot. He currently ranks fourth on the team in tackles with 23. He scored his second career touchdown when he had a pick-six against Central Michigan. ISN’T THAT SPECIAL? The most experienced players on the 2013 Wolfpack squad in terms of games started is the talented trio of Niklas Sade, Wil Baumann and Scott Thompson at placekicker, punter and long snapper. Sade and Thompson have each started 30 games of their State careers, while Baumann missed just one game due to a pregame injury in 2011 (he did hold for extra points in that contest but did not punt).

OLD MAN DOEREN At 41 years old, you would think that Dave Doeren might be one of the youngest coaches ever to coach the Wolfpack. However, only three coaches in the past four decades have been older than Doeren when they took the reins of the Wolfpack. When Lou Holtz was named head coach in 1972, he was 35 years old. Bo Rein was 31 in 1976 when he was named head coach. Monte Kiffin became head coach in 1980 when he was 40 and Tom Reed was 38 in 1983 when he took the job. Mike O’Cain was 39 when he was named head coach in 1993. Since 1972, only Dick Sheridan (45 in 1986), Chuck Amato (54 in 2000), and Tom O’Brien (59 in 2007) were older than Doeren when they were named the Wolfpack’s head coach. SELLING OUT The excitement surrounding NC State football has translated into rapid ticket sales, as the Wolfpack sold its entire allotment of season tickets for 2013 two weeks before the opener. State posted its highest number of season tickets sold since the 2008 campaign. Fans eager to see the team play also snatched up all available five-game Mini-Packs within two weeks. PACK BACKERS BACK Three former Wolfpack linebackers are playing a role on Dave Doeren’s inaugural NC State staff. Clayton White, a three-year starter for the Pack from 1998-2000, now serves as the safeties coach and co-special teams coordinator for his alma mater. White, who went on to play in the NFL for three seasons, has also coached on the staffs at Western Carolina, Western Michigan, Stanford, Western Kentucky and Connecticut.

YOUNG MAN DOEREN At 41 years old, Dave Doeren is the youngest coach in the ACC by two years and is one of the youngest head coaches in the BCS conferences.

Dantonio “Thunder Dan” Burnette, has returned to State as an assistant strength and conditioning coach after spending a season on the staff at Pitt. Burnette, a 2002 All-ACC performer, is tied for second in career tackles in the Wolfpack record book with 476 and holds the school record with seven recovered fumbles.

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL Two weeks before the season opener, the NC State football team elected its Leadership Council for 2013. This core group of players, representing every position on the field, was voted on by the team and is charged with providing guidance for the Wolfpack for the upcoming season. “The Leadership Council is a position of respect,” said head coach Dave Doeren. “It empowers these guys. This position is not a recognition of athletic ability, but leadership ability. I will go to this group with decisions that I want player input on and if a player wants something brought to a coach they will go to the council and the council will bring it to us. It gives them a voice.” Comprised of players from all classes, the 2013 Leadership Council boasts 12 seniors or graduate students, seven juniors and three sophomores. Freshman Matt Dayes ran for 84 yards and three touchdowns to help North Carolina State beat Louisiana Tech 40-14 on Saturday in its first game under coach Dave Doeren. Tony Creecy also scored for the Wolfpack (1-0), who scored the first 24 points with Doeren’s no-huddle offense and led comfortably all afternoon.

Niklas Sade’s 48-yard field goal with 33 seconds left lifted NC State past Richmond 23-21 on Saturday night. N.C. State freshman Bryant Shirreffs accounted for two touchdowns and Pete Thomas was 24 of 31 for 237 yards while helping the Wolfpack (2-0) rally from an 11-point deficit.

Still, an early left foot injury to starting quarterback Brandon Mitchell put a damper on the afternoon. Mitchell, who beat out Pete Thomas for the job during training camp, directed N.C. State to touchdowns on its first two possessions before leaving midway through the opening quarter.

“They found a way to win,” said head coach Dave Doeren, who now posts a 14-0 record in home games as a head coach. “A lot of teams wouldn’t do that. I told our guys I was proud of them. We made plays and a lot of mistakes too. We had 10 penalties tonight, which was disappointing and something we have to correct. But, Richmond is a good football team. They don’t make many mistakes which puts pressure on us when we do.”

Mitchell returned to the sideline late in the first half on crutches and wearing a protective boot. Kenneth Dixon ran for 118 yards and a touchdown for the Bulldogs (0-1), who lost their first game under new coach Skip Holtz. Thomas threw for 212 yards on 15-for-27 passing after Mitchell’s injury, while Dayes turned in a performance that showed flashes of why Doeren has been high on the rookie from Weston, Fla., during the preseason. Dayes - seeing a bigger role with the one-game suspension to leading rusher Shadrach Thornton- capped his day with an 18-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter that made it 37-14. Doeren, who spent the previous two seasons at Northern Illinois, has pushed his team to do everything at a faster tempo, with the no-huddle offense stirring the most fan excitement. That buzz grew with the fast start under Mitchell, an Arkansas graduate transfer revealed as the starter shortly before kickoff. The Wolfpack marched 65 yards on the opening drive, ending with Creecy bulling his way through Xavier Woods for a 3-yard TD run. On the next drive, Mitchell found Rashard Smith for a 56-yard catch-and-run that set up Dayes’ 2-yard score that made it 14-0 less than 6 minutes in. But Mitchell was stopped on a third-and-1 keeper to end the third series in his final play. He completed all three of his passes for 93 yards and ran five times for 19 yards.

The NC State football team held No. 3 Clemson to its lowest scoring output over its past 10 ACC games, but could not pull off the Thursday night upset, falling to the Tigers 26-14 before a sold-out crowd of 57,583 at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The NC State football team scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in defeating the Central Michigan Chippewas by a score of 48-14 on Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium.

The NC State defense held the Tigers to season-lows in points, total yards, passing yards and rushing yards, turning in a superb defensive effort over four quarters of play. Clemson was held 19 points shy of its season average by the Pack’s defense which record 13 tackles for loss on the evening.

Junior quarterback Pete Thomas completed 14-of-20 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown while running for another score in leading a balanced Wolfpack offense to 483 yards on the day. Junior wide receiver Bryan Underwood hauled in five catches for 148 yards and a touchdown, while senior wideout Rashard Smith recorded a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Wolfpack quarterback Pete Thomas completed 20-of-36 passes for 213 yards, while also running for a score, the first of his NC State career. The Pack gained 165 yards on the ground, with seven players contributing to the running total. Senior middle linebacker Robert Caldwell led State with 13 tackles, including four tackles for a loss, while Dontae Johnson added 11 tackles. D.J. Green and Hakim Jones each added 10 tackles for the Wolfpack defense. “It was a hard fought game,” said NC State head coach Dave Doeren. “I thought our players competed hard. I’m proud of the way they competed tonight.” With Clemson holding a 13-7 lead at the 7:43 juncture of the third quarter, NC State took over at its own 17-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Wolfpack wide receiver Bryan Underwood took a jet sweep around right end for what appeared to be an 83-yard touchdown. However, it was deemed Underwood stepped out of bounds at the 49-yard line, giving him a 32-yard gain on the play. From there State was not able to capitalize, ultimately giving the ball back to Clemson three plays later on a fumble. On the ensuing Tiger possession, Clemson needed five plays to move 48 yards before putting the ball in the end zone on a 30-yard Tajh Boyd to Martavis Bryant pass. Following the Clemson score, State moved the ball 45 yards on 10 plays, but could not finish the drive as Niklas Sade’s 48-yard field goal missed wide right. On the Wolfpack’s second defensive play of the game, NC State senior linebacker D.J. Green stepped in front of a Central Michigan pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown to put State up 7-0. The score remained the same for the next 15 minutes of play before the Wolfpack erupted for 28 second-quarter points. The Wolfpack started the scoring with a nine-play, 68-yard drive at the outset of the second quarter, culminating in a 29-yard Shadrach Thornton touchdown run. State kept the ball on the ground for eight of the nine plays, including a nine-yard run by Bryant Shirreffs on 4th-and-1 that kept the NC State drive alive. Two plays later, Thornton dashed into the end zone for his second rushing touchdown of the year to make the score 14-0. After a Central Michigan three-and-out, NC State wasted no time getting on the board again. The Wolfpack needed just two plays - a 25-yard Thomas to Smith pass, followed by a 42-yard touchdown run by Matt Dayes - to push the advantage to 21-0. A Mike Rose third-down sack stopped Central Michigan’s ensuing drive, allowing for Smith’s electrifying 67-yard punt return for a touchdown, making it 28-0 at the 6:54 mark of the second quarter. The Wolfpack would add one more score before the half as Thomas plunged into the end zone from eight yards out.
