The IBC 43rd Annual Convention Community bankers from across Colorado and myriad associate members and vendors from throughout the U.S. attended our 43rd Annual Convention—Navigating the Path to Greater Success! held in September at the beautiful Vail Marriott Mountain Resort! More than 130 bankers were in attendance representing 53 banks! It was a fabulous gathering and our 300 attendees had a marvelous time. We appreciate the support of Colorado’s community bankers, associate members, speakers, sponsors, and exhibitors! Wednesday The Eagle Vail Golf Club proved to be a fun and challenging course for our 79 golfers. It was a fabulous day packed full of sunshine and fun! Our Opening Reception kicked things off Wednesday evening. Thirty-two exhibitors filled the exhibit hall and 25 outstanding sponsors supported our 43rd Annual Convention. Thursday Byron Maynes, IBC President and President of First National Bank, Cortez called the IBC 43rd Annual Business Meeting to order Thursday morning. President-Elect Harry Devereaux, President, Home State Bank/Guaranty Bank, under our by-laws succeeds Byron as the IBC President for the 2016-2017 term. Congratulations Harry! Byron is now Chairman of the IBC. The board and membership unanimously approved Dave Reyher, President, TBK Bank, to the position of IBC President-Elect for the 2016-2017 term. Congratulations Dave! Byron Maynes presented the results of the IBC’s District Director Elections. In District A, Kyle Heckman, President of Flatirons Bank, was successfully re-elected. Shawn Osthoff, President of Bank of Colorado, was successfully re-elected to represent District B, and in Director D, Ed Merritt, Jr., President, The Dolores State Bank was also successfully reelected. With the election of Dave Reyher as our new President-Elect, this leaves a vacancy in District C to be filled. Lastly, Bryon welcomed Tom Ogaard, President of Native American Bank, to the Board. Tom will represent District A.

We sincerely thank Tim Zimmerman, ICBA Vice Chairman and President and CEO, Standard Bank in Monroeville, Pennsylvania for his pointed, timely and passionate ICBA federal legislative update. Byron Maynes presented Tim with the covenanted IBC Silver Spur.

Byron then passed the gavel to Harry Devereaux, President, Home State Bank/Guaranty Bank. Harry proceeded to take center stage to present his agenda for the upcoming year. We look forward to Harry’s guidance and enthusiasm! Barbara Walker, Executive Director, IBC, recognized Allan Tormohlen, Vice Present, Bank of the San Juans, for his time, energy, and service to the IBC. Barbara noted the IBC benefitted from Allan’s dedicated involvement as an IBC Officer and Director since 2007. Lastly, Barbara thanked Allan for his long-time efforts in support of community banking and the IBC, especially his effective engagement in our lobbying efforts to protect our industry. We wish Allan continued success and prosperity. It was a pleasure to have Roxanne Reed, Founder and Executive Director, Military Spouse Foundation, with us to provide information about the Foundation. Roxanne noted there is an opportunity for Colorado’s community banks to work with the Foundation to provide training and jobs for military spouses. An all-star, industry-expert cybersecurity panel followed the annual meeting. Tim Burke, IMA, facilitated the panel comprised of: John F. Mullen, Managing Partner, Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith, LLP; Andrew Obuchowski, National Leader Digital Forensics & Incident Response Services Director, Security & Privacy Consulting, RSM US LLP; and Tim Frances, Enterprise Cyber Lead, Travelers. We appreciate the assistance from Nick Burns, IMA and Mimi Dair, Travelers, for putting this outstanding panel together.

Up next we heard from some of the youngest IBC member bankers who participated on the Millennial Engagement – Let’s Hear it From Them! panel. Jason McKeever, Director of Training & Development, Eide Bailly did a great job facilitating the panel. Panelist were: Elly Alexander, Stockmens Bank, Erik Petersen, Yampa Valley Bank and Brady Nachtrieb, Stockmens Bank. We sincerely thank you for participating and sharing your thoughts and insights. Next up - Recognition Luncheon! Byron Maynes, IBC Chairman, presented the IBC’s Western States School of Banking Freshman Academic Achievement Scholarship to Shawna Valdez, Assistant Vice President, The Dolores State Bank. Shawna is the recipient of the annual $1,000 scholarship to the Western States School of Banking based on her outstanding academic performance. Congratulations! Byron also recognized Nicholas K. Brooks, Vice President, FirstBank, for his outstanding academic achievement at The Graduate School of Banking at Colorado. Based upon first and second year projects and exam grades, Nicholas was the top performing Colorado community banker! Nicholas will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward his final year at The Graduate School of Banking at Colorado. Congratulations! In addition, Byron also recognized the recipients of the IBC’s $1,000 High School Senior Scholarships. Each awardee receives a one-time $1,000 scholarship. Cody LeBlanc, sponsored by Bank of Colorado, was the recipient in the bank employee child category and is attending the University of Denver. Carlos Diaz, sponsored by Valley Bank & Trust, was the recipient in the bank customer category and is attending Colorado School of Mines. We wish Cody and Carlos all the best in their academic endeavors. Barbara Walker announced the recipients of the 2016 IBC Legislator Awards: Senate Majority Leader, Mark Scheffel – Legislator of the Year; Senator Ellen Roberts, Senate President Pro Tem – Champion of Small Business; Representative Alec Garnett – Defender of Main Street; and Representative Dan Nordberg – Defender of Main Street. These supporters of community banks and of the communities we serve will receive their awards during the IBC’s Autumn Awards Luncheons. Our Conversation and Canvas guest/spouse program was a tremendous hit! Everyone enjoyed casual conversation while painting their masterpieces! Thanks to expert direction and tips from Lauren at Alpine Arts Center everyone loved their finished work of art! Thursday afternoon concluded with seven standing-room-only breakout sessions. Christian Otteson, Shapiro Bieging Barber Otteson LLP, and Adam Keefer and Caspar Bentinck both of Sandler O’Neill + Partners, presented Merger and Acquisition Insights – Legal Considerations; Jason McKeever, Eide Bailly, presented Have Your Leadership Skills Kept Up with the Times?; Aaron Gamewell, Secure Banking Solutions, presented Mitigating Risk of Ransomware through an Information Security Program; Gita Thollesson, S&P Global Market Intelligence, presented Commercial Loan Revenue Enhancement – Industry Best Practices; Kurt Leeper, Shapiro Bieging Barber Otteson LLP, presented Understanding Recent Compensation Developments; Adam Fiedor and Michael Richter, GLC Advisors & Co., presented Board and Management Succession Planning; and Mick Oppy, Vantiv, presented OmniChannel Disruption.

Our Thursday evening events were splendid! Attendees had a grand time visiting with vendors and bidding on silent/live auction items during our reception. A special thank you to Norm Arends, TBK Bank, for being our auctioneer. We couldn’t have done it without you! We raised more than $8,500 for the IBC’s high school student scholarship competition. Thank you to everyone who donated and purchased items.

WINK! After a delicious dinner Wink –The Band! took stage. IBC’s very own Chuck Johnston, President, North Valley Bank, and lead singer of Wink rocked the house and had the audience singing and dancing all night! The band is comprised of Bill Marcus, Chris Gork, Jaytee Tanguma, Denny Sheridan and Chuck Johnston, Jr.

Friday Friday morning started with IBC’s District Roundtable meetings. Jane Bral, Colorado Department of Labor and Employment – Division of Oil & Public Safety, presented information regarding Certificate of Eligibility to the Colorado Petroleum Storage Tank Fund and how lenders may be eligible. Immediately following, Ken Boldt, Deputy Bank Commissioner, Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies – Division of Banking, presented information regarding what is happening at the Division and regulatory items slated for 2017. Attendees then had the choice to attend one more standing-room-only breakout session. Adam Fiedor and Michael Richter, GLC Advisors & Co., presented Merger and Acquisition Update – Industry Analysis. Jim Reber, ICBA Securities, presented Is Your Liquidity Strategy Ready?; F. John Podvin and Christian Otteson, Shapiro Bieging Barber Otteson LLP presented Compliance Hot Topics. Mick Oppy, Vantiv, presented Fraud Mitigation in an Ever Changing Payments World.

It was a pleasure to have Esther George, President and CEO, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, conclude our convention. Ms. George presented on The U.S. Economy and the Federal Reserve. Esther delivered an enlightening presentation that provided great insight into the future of the economy and the Federal Reserve System. We appreciate Ms. George being with us this year.
