The College Success Foundation embarks on an exciting second decade of inspiring low-income, underserved students to graduate high school and complete college. We now have over 2,000 college graduates beginning careers, pursuing graduate school and giving back to their communities. Despite the challenges in these hard economic times, there is much to acknowledge. • Over 87,000 students are signed up for the Washington State College Bound Scholarship.

• A new CSF Achievers Scholars program, patterned after the Gates Achievers Scholarship, is underway in four CSF-partner school districts.

• CSF – District of Columbia has seen over 500 students go to college with Achievers Scholarships. In 2012 they will graduate their first class.

The momentum created by these accomplishments is generating innovative ideas for the future. We look for new initiatives—both public and private—to offset the spiraling cost of college tuition in Washington State and elsewhere. We pilot new ideas to encourage young people to reach the milestones to get to college. Tacoma is an example where we are using financial incentives in our new “Getting Ready for Success” initiative to help students reach their goals and improve their outcomes. We are grateful to the Washington State Legislature for their robust and continued support of our work. In 2011 our State Legislature established a new public/privatefunded Opportunity Scholarship for low- and middleincome students enrolling in high employer demand fields of study. We applaud this type of creativity and ingenuity to help bridge the gap between what young people can afford and what college costs. We salute our longtime partners, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Costco Wholesale, Chateau Ste. Michelle and many others, for staying the course and standing as stalwart champions of our mission of providing college scholarships and support to our young people. We promise to improve on our current programs and capitalize on future prospects to bring college opportunities to underserved students so that all of us, individually and collectively, can make America the best it can be. Note 2: Due to financial accounting standards, large grant contributions were recognized as revenue during prior years, but expenses related to these revenues will be recorded as the scholarship, program and indirect expenses are incurred over the life of these long-term grants, which range from five to fifteen years. This may result in a decrease in net assets in a particular year as a result of following financial accounting standards related to accounting for releases of temporarily restricted balance and is not a cash shortfall.  Scholarship, program and indirect expenses relating to these grants of $15,058,000 were recognized during the year ending December 31, 2010.
