have longed For years, travelers to come to Burma - now known as Myanmar, an enticing destination of gilded temples, verdant landscapes, and passionate, deeply spiritual people. In recent history, this nation has been shut off from the world by an autocratic military junta, causing democratic opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to declare in 1996, “Burma will be here for many years, so tell your friends to visit us later.” But democracy is on the rise in Burma - the junta is out, Suu Kyi’s house arrest is over, and her “later” has finally come. Burma’s warm, welcoming people are ready to meet you, and to show off the country that they have worked so hard to build. Join us on this enchanting Myanmar river cruise and experience its many treasures, from the myriad shrines and pagodas of Bagan, to the discovery-rich banks of the Irrawaddy River, and more.

Nicknamed the ‘Garden City of the East’, Myanmar’s largest and most populous city is the perfect introduction to the country. With what can only be described as one of the most striking religious monuments in South-East Asia, the Shwedagon Pagoda, plus a wealth of colonial architecture and lots more besides, Yangon is a city of amazing contrasts and a delight that we will explore later.

Sule Shangri La Hotel

Upon arrival (2330) transfer to our hotel, Sule Shangri La located in the heart of the city. Blending elegance with gracious Myanmar hospitality, it is the perfect base for taking in the city’s exotic and distinctive culture. There is no arranged dinner this evening however Café Sule is open 24 hours and room service is available. We just have a short one night stay now but do not worry, we will be back! Meal: In flight • Accommodation: Sule Shangri La (Deluxe rooms) formerly Traders Hotel Day 3 Tue, Sep 22 /2015 Inle Lake Time to rest this morning and breakfast at leisure. We depart early afternoon and transfer to the airport for your flight to Heho. Shan state’s prime attraction, Inle Lake is literally dotted with interesting villages and floating gardens and is one of the most picturesque locations in all of Myanmar. The lake and the surrounding area are also home to a number of tribes, mainly Intha but also Shan, Kayah and Danaw to name a few and there are fantastic opportunities for browsing at local markets and interacting with the local population. NyaungShwe is the gateway to the lake and upon arrival at Heho airport you will be met and transferred to this small, but attractive town. After a brief visit to ShweYaunghweKyaung Monastery, which is famed for its unique oval windows, we transfer to our private boats and venture onto the lake. We arrive at the Inle Lake View Hotel, our home for the next three nights. Dinner will be at our hotel this evening. Meals: Breakfast & dinner • Accommodation: Inle Lake View Resort & Spa (Deluxe rooms) Day 4 Wed, Sep 23 /2015 Inle Lake *Note that the order of sightseeing may vary. Following breakfast, we visit the local 5-Day Market which rotates between towns in the Inle Lake region. The market is a great place to observe local life with many of the ethnic minorities attending to buy and sell their goods. After exploring the market and perhaps buying the odd local handicraft or two, it is time to continue to the ruined stupas and temples at the lake-side village of Inndein. A covered walkway leads to the main Shwe Inn TheinPaya, from where there

Inle Lake View Resort and Spa

are great views across the lake. Lunch today is a small group highlight as you dine in the floating home of a local Intha family. This afternoon we visit a floating garden and see the methods by which the local farmers grow flowers, tomatoes, squash and other fruit and vegetables on long wooden trellises supported on floating mats of vegetation. It goes without saying any visit to the lake would not be complete without witnessing the unique technique of leg rowing which is so synonymous with Shan Tribes Intha fishermen. Our last stop includes an interesting look at a Nampan village to see local cigar making and a visit to Inn Paw Khone, a small village that specializes in silk weaving. Dinner will be at hotel. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner • Accommodation: Inle Lake View Resort and Spa, deluxe rooms Day 5 Thu, Sep 24 /2015 Inle Lake Set off this morning from your lakeside hotel for Sagar, the far southern region of Inle Lake. Very few tourists make the trip down to this region yet it is one of the most beautiful places in the Shan State with the mountains forming a backdrop for the small villages and fishermen on the water. The area was only recently opened to tourists. The boat journey takes three

hours but is full of fabulous views and home to many unique species of birds, both indigenous and migratory. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride! Upon arriving in Sagar area there are several stops that will be made. The main highlight is the ‘sunken’ stupas of Sagar - 108 stupas from the 16-17th centuries that are partially underwater for a few months a year. There is also a local monastery and village that we will visit. Continue to the village of Thaya Gone, home to Pa-Oh, Shan and Inthar people and known for its production of local rice wine. Watch the process of distillation and then sample some of the local brew if you wish. Another stop will be made in Sae Khaung Pottery Village to see the crafting of oil and water pots as well as the natural, underground kilns used by the villagers. On the western shores of the Sagar area is Tar Kaung, a series of more than 200 stupas which also make a fabulous photo stop. Lunch will be arranged along the way. Midafternoon the boat will begin its journey back to the main section of Inle Lake. Traveling back in the afternoon, the light has shifted, and the route looks much different, with different activities occurring on the water and in the villages. Rice noodles can be seen drying in the sun, spun cotton is hung out to dry and kids are returning from school at this time of day. You’ll reach your hotel early this evening in time to freshen up for dinner and to enjoy the sunset. Meals: Breakfast, lunch & dinner • Accommodation: Inle Lake View Resort and Spa, deluxe rooms

Day 6 Fri, Sep 25 /2015 Inle Lake - Heho - Mandalay - Embarkation - Mingun Following breakfast, we retrace our route to Heho and have a short flight to Mandalay, the last royal capital of the Burmese Kingdom. Upon arrival into Mandalay we will enjoy a morning tour of Mahamuni Pagoda and Mandalay Hill where spiraling staircases lead to sweeping views of the city and its temples. There are other temples to visit here but we have elected instead to visit the Myanmar Buddhist Orphanage for boys. These kids do not have parents to love and care for them, so they must struggle for even their basic needs. You will have the opportunity to talk and play with the children. We will discuss in more detail how to structure our visit and what to bring with us for these children. The Irrawaddy River is a great waterway flowing from the northern tip of Myanmar into the southern delta and the sea. We embark the RV Irrawaddy Explorer at mid-day to begin our exploration of this river. This elegant boutique ship has 28 spacious outside cabins which give you a fascinating view on the beauties of the Irrawaddy River. Tastefully furnished, the Irrawaddy Explorer offers a spacious and inviting atmosphere on board while absorbing the passing landscape. The accommodations aboard the Irrawaddy Explorer embody the grace and style of the English Colonial era, incorporating modern conveniences and luxuries that rival the finest hotels of Asia. Today, the peaceful village is known for its pottery. Craftsmen use clay from the nearby Irrawaddy River to make pots for buyers from the surrounding cities. During your walking tour of the village, you’ll visit several workshops, getting to know the artisans who make their living here. Return to the ship to enjoy lunch. There are over 4,400 temples in Bagan and compared to everywhere else, it is blissfully untouristy. This ancient city contains more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, many still perfectly preserved and no two alike. Explore the ruins by foot and after lunch on board we’ll set out via local oxcart to view the sunset atop the most significant temple in the area before returning to the ship for a sumptuous dinner on-board. the top of the Stupa is encrusted with 4531 diamonds; the largest which is a single 76 carats. As night falls there will be the opportunity to light small candles near the base of the pagoda, a delightful event that enhances the atmosphere and provides another angle from which to photograph this stunning building. Later we visit the glittering gold majesty of Yangon’s Shwedagon Pagoda which towers almost 98 meters above the green cityscape of Yangon. One of the wonders of the religious world, it is believed to have been built more than 2500 years ago and is a testament to the faith of the Burmese. This magnificent building is covered with hundreds of gold plates and

palm wine is made from the juicy sap of the tree that bears its name. Farm hands collect the sap from taps inserted into the tree, and after fermenting overnight, the brew takes on a distinctly sour and fizzy character. The first sip may catch you off guard, but each successive swig is a little more refreshing. Our lunch today in Bago will give us a chance to try this unique wine. This former capital is home to some notable sights, including the sublime Shwemawdaw Paya and the huge Shwethalyaung reclining Buddha.
