MCCLINTOCK HIGH SCHOOL “CHARGING FORWARD WITH TRADITION”

13 May 2016 From the Principal’s Office Dear Charger Community, This will be the last weekly newsletter of the 2015-16 school year. The summer quarterly newsletter, containing a great deal of information regarding summer activities and announcements for the start of the 2016-17 school year will be available later in May. You will find this when it is published at http://www.tempeunion.org/domain/129. Summer School registration ends today, Friday, May 13 and reopens Tuesday, May 24 from 8am-noon at the Corona del Sol campus. Classes begin Wednesday, May 25th at 7:30am on Corona del Sol's campus. Please check the website for additional information. www.tempeunion.org/TUHSDSummerEducationAcademy Congratulations to each student in the class of 2016; your four years at McClintock have been productive and enjoyable. To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson, please keep in mind that “Life is a journey, not a destination.” We wish you the best on your journey. Lastly, thank you to the entire Charger Community for your support the last four years. I am fortunate to retire a Charger, and will take with me memories to last a lifetime. “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” (From Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne)

May 16 at 5:30 pm we will be honoring many of our seniors at the Senior Awards Night ceremony. At this event we will recognize seniors who have been offered in-state college scholarships, those graduating in the top 5% of their senior class, those selected for scholar athlete awards, as well as a few other surprise awards. Invitations were hand-delivered to the students being honored and a copy of this invitation has also been mailed home. Please mark your calendars and plan to help us honor these amazing young people! Mental Health Tip of the Month- May Edition The second part of our test anxiety discussion focuses more on study strategies for students to help with test anxiety associated with final exams. Just to recap. Test anxiety is a potentially debilitating response to testing situations and is characterized by negative, catastrophizing thoughts about oneself in relation to the test, usually accompanied by poor study skills. These thoughts and behaviors, in-turn, produce performance-inhibiting difficulties during the testing situation, such as not being able to recall previously learned information. When a student experiences performance-inhibiting difficulties, the negative thoughts about themselves are further reinforced. Here are some tips to help students who may have test anxiety prepare for final exams: 

Don’t cram! Not only does pulling all night cram study sessions rob you of much needed sleep, it is likely to muddle the information you do know, making it harder to retrieve during the test. It is best to start studying early and in small increments of time. Create a study group. Every person has their individual strengths and weaknesses. This works twofold. First, when a student partners with a group of peers that are stronger in a particular subject area, they are likely to build on an area they need help with. Second, when a student partners with peers whom are less familiar than they are in a particular subject, it affords them the opportunity to apply their knowledge. Set short-term goals and establish rewards for accomplishing goals. Studying is most effective when it is time-specific and followed by a relaxing, pleasurable activity upon completion. For example, if a student sets a goal to study for one hour, they may want to reward themselves with 10 minutes of videogame play.

Happy Finals! Dr. Haskins & Mrs. Ramnarine McClintock High School’s School Psychologists
