This past May Tony Lee, owner of Tony’s Jewelry & Custom Design at 29th and Fairlawn, moved his store three doors East of his old location. “I’ve been very happy with our new place,” says Tony. “We now have a big front window, a larger showroom and more work area. It’s also given us the space we needed in order to increase our inventory. “I really enjoy working here. Customers can come in and walk right up to the window by my work area to watch me work on my custom designs or make repairs on their own jewelry. We repair gold and silver jewelry including re-sizing rings, repairing chains, and jewelry restoration such as re-mounting or replacing stones. Depending on the complexity of the repair, I can often do the work while the customer waits, or have it ready the next day. I do all the repairs on-site— nothing is sent out. “My specialty is custom design and, due to a recently implemented change in scheduling, I now have more time to spend with clients and more time to work on custom pieces. I can create very unique, one-of-a-kind designs for matching wedding bands or a wedding

Tony Lee, Owner ring to match an engagement ring. “If someone has an unusual jewelry design in mind that they’d like to have made, they can bring me a sketch, or simply describe their idea to me. First, I’ll create the piece in wax. Then, I want the client to see the piece to be sure I’ve captured their idea correctly. Changes can be made directly in the wax at that point. I can finish the piece in yellow or white gold, or two-tone. I can even melt their old gold jewelry to create a new, modern piece. “For those who want to incorporate gem stones into their custom piece, I can offer a hand-picked selection of beautiful

diamonds, emeralds, rubies or sapphires to choose from. “For custom work I recommend clients call for an appointment so I can set aside plenty of time to work with them and answer any questions. “For Valentine’s Day, we have an expanded selection of lovely pendants, earrings and bracelets in sparkling diamonds and precious stones. We’ve also added a fun collection of jewelry pieces priced under $50 such as pretty polished agate pendants and stone necklaces and earrings. Our many engraveable items, which include key chains, money clips, small jewelry boxes and charms, also make great gifts. We have engraveable baby gifts too, such as silver-plated banks and cups. “Our lower overhead here, off the Wanamaker strip, enables us to keep our prices very reasonable.” Tony’s Jewelry & Custom Design at 29th and Fairlawn is located between Ace Hardware and Big Lots. Let Tony custom design a one-of-akind piece of jewelry just for you or someone you love. Hours are 10AM to 6PM Mon.-Fri. and 10AM to 2PM on Saturdays. Topeka Ear Nose & Throat Announces Plans For New Building Site “From its inception the intent of Topeka Ear Nose & Throat (Topeka ENT) was to follow one simple principle —to provide friendly, professional medical care for each patient’s ear, nose and throat needs,” relates Michael D. Franklin, M.D., F.A.C.S., founder of the clinic. “We are also committed to treating every patient as a ‘person’ first, and not just a number on a chart. Our growth, since we opened our doors in 1997, attests to the fact that we are continuing to adhere to our initial plan and purpose. “We began, 10 years ago, with just three on staff...an office manager, one nurse and me. We’ve grown to include three Doctors, two Physicians Assistants, two Audiologists, two Speech Pathologists, six Nurses and about 20 additional staff members! Along with our full range of ear, nose and throat surgeries and medical treatments our practice encompasses allergy diagnoses and treatments, a hearing aid program, a balance disorder lab, the Topeka cleft palette clinic, a Videostroboscopy lab to evaluate voice disorders, a full range of facial cosmetic and plastic surgery options and a cosmetic laser program. “Needless to say, with the variety of services we offer and the number

Checking The Pulse On Your Business—Are Its Vital Signs Healthy?

A healthy body requires routine check-ups and examinations. So does a healthy, thriving business. “No matter what stage a business is at,” says Robert Holmes, CPA and owner of Holmes & Associates Chartered, “in order to keep it going, its systems must be checked and attention paid to any ailments to prevent early death. “For the newborn business, the goals and system checks are relatively simple. Merely staying alive and maintaining one’s sanity is a measure of success at this point in development. Systems are very limited in the start-up stage because there are usually a handful of people (if that) trying to get capital, find more customers and deliver a quality product. Three common causes of mortality at this stage are: • Atrophy—all capital and funds are dried up. • Neglect—the marketplace does not take to the product or service as well as predicted. • Stress—the business owner cannot take the pressures of running a business anymore and sells the business or closes. “As a business begins to mature, basic survival is the measure of success. Teetering on the edge of just

making enough to survive is hazardous to anyone’s health. At this stage, there are still limited systems and employees; there may be a marginal profit; expenses are covered and cash flow can and must be projected. Failure to thrive at this stage can be attributed to owner burnout, lack of vision, insufficient funds and marketplace factors. Too many businesses get stuck in this stage. These are the businesses that are sold at a loss or that just close down when the owner has had enough. “I don’t know of anyone who enters a competition with the goal of losing. However, far too many enter the ‘business race’ without seeking the counsel of an experienced coach to learn the disciplines that are necessary in order to stay healthy and obtain the victory. That is where Holmes & Associates Cartered can help. We can ‘coach’ business owners in how to assess their weaknesses and attack them rigorously, and how to optimize their strengths. It is our opinion that every business should strive for optimum health in order to be able to perform like an Olympic athlete and achieve success.” Robert says that now is the time to train your business body and make critical decisions. Are you going to “go for the gold” or are you willing

to settle for being a recreational player? If you are reaching for the gold, then you need to learn how to train your business...overcome any weaknesses that may arise...build on your strengths...and consider growing and expanding your business, reinvesting in its success. “This will require constant monitoring,” states Robert. “While it’s true that not every athlete (business) captures the gold—constant monitoring and exercising certainly increases the opportunity for success and the potential for optimum health.” If you would like to discuss the health of your business, or would like help with implementing any of the ideas in this article, please contact Bob Holmes of Holmes & Associates Chartered at 785-2739450. Frameshop & Gallery Features Fine Art & Custom Framing Ron and Susan Anderson just celebrated their 6th anniversary of ownership of the Frameshop & Gallery, located inside Fairlawn Plaza Mall at 21st and Fairlawn. “I’ve always loved art, being around creative people, and introducing others to them,” shares Susan. “Our store is the perfect place to do just that! Shelly Bedsaul, our award-winning Certified Picture Framer (CPF) and designer is one of four talented artists whose original work we display for sale. “We also have many in-stock prints by famous artists, including limited edition pieces. And, if a customer wants a particular artist’s work that we don’t have in stock, we can locate whatever they need through our in-store internet. We even have access to secondary markets and can get very good prices on pieces that might not be available elsewhere.” “When a customer walks in with an item to be framed, either Susan or I will personally attend to their needs,” says Shelly. “Our molding selection is huge. We rep five different companies and have well over a thousand framing options. We don’t allow that fact, however,

(L-R) Susan and Shelly to overwhelm anyone. We efficiently help narrow down the possibilities by first asking questions to learn ‘where’ the piece will hang in their office or home...what color scheme they need to work within, and so-on. “We also provide a pleasant and comfortable home-like atmosphere here, with walls painted in various colors so we can show clients how their art will look when hanging. “In addition, we have a nice (and growing) selection of outstanding fine art home decor and gifts such as jewelry created by Kansas and local artists, pottery, basketry and more.” For personal, professional assistance in selecting custom framing, creative matting and fine art, visit the Frameshop & Gallery in Fairlawn Plaza Mall. Petland Remodel In Full Swing

“We’re asking people to ‘pardon our dust’ while we’re in full remodel mode,” says Chris Hamilton, owner of Petland, at Fairlawn Plaza. “We are very excited about all the changes being made and we’re working hard to get them done as soon as possible! “We’re open for ‘business as usual’ throughout the remodel, and we invite people to stop in and check out our progress. “When the remodel is finished, we’ll have an expanded kennel section, a community room for birthday parties and meetings, all ‘daylight’ lights, new colors, new floors, and the whole store will feel more spacious. “We’ve already finished our new fish area, making it more open and fun for people to view the fish and make their selections. Four 72-gallon bow-front display tanks flank the entrance, and we now offer a larger volume of fish, with more variety. We’ve added a hospital-grade water supply with an Ultra Violet sterilizer, water that is constantly changing, and a huge new R.O. unit to remove all the bad chemicals from the water. The system provides the best environment possible for fish. We also have a new live plant display unit, with a much larger plant selection.

“I’m particularly enthused about our new Salt Water fish unit. It’s an impressive multi-chambered unit, so we’re able to house more fish, yet keep them separated—which means less stress to them (brought on by being chased or ‘heckled’ by other fish). Less stress on fish, of course, reduces their susceptibility to disease. We’re also adding a lot more varieties of fish, including some exclusive ones such as Holland Discus and imported African Cichlids.” Petland has a wonderful selection of happy, healthy, adorable puppies, kittens, birds, ferrets, bunnies, reptiles, fish and more. Stop in and pet a puppy today...it’s a sure cure for the winter blues! There are special petting and “get acquainted” areas. Petland is located at 2139 SW Fairlawn Plaza Dr. (South of Office Max). Minimally-Invasive Surgeries Mean Faster Recuperation For Patients “Minimally-invasive surgery (MIS) refers to surgeries performed through very small incisions, or in some cases, no incision at all,” explains Dr. Carlyle Dunshee, MD, FACS, with Tallgrass General & Vascular Surgery. “We consider ourselves to be the leaders in general surgery for MIS techniques, with precision equipment and tools such as the DaVinci Robot surgery system. “Minimally-invasive surgery is an option that should always be considered, because the patient benefits are many. With MIS there is less pain, less chance for infection, less bleeding, and a quicker recovery and return to work...patients feel ‘normal’ faster. MIS also means smaller scars, and in some cases, a local anesthetic instead of general anesthesia. That means less time in the hospital. The treatment may even be able to be done as an outpatient procedure. “In the past, people may have put off having necessary surgeries due to the extensive recuperation time. Today, most surgeries can be taken care of in a ‘kinder, gentler way’— with laparoscopic incisions that are only 1/4 to 3/4 of an inch in length. “We are striving to educate people and make them aware of the many less invasive surgery

Dr. Carlyle Dunshee, MD, FACS, performs minimally-invasive surgery

techniques that are available, so they will no longer neglect their health and will seek care more readily. “Minimally-invasive techniques are almost always available as an option. They span our entire practice at Tallgrass—from gallbladder removal to thyroid and parathyroid surgeries. They include needle biopsies, partial mastectomies and lumpectomies, sentinel node biopsies, endovascular aneurysm repair, laser treatment for veins, and thorascopies. There are laparoscopic surgeries for anti-reflux, hiatal hernia, colon resection, obesity, splenectomy, appendectomy, gastric bypass and many others. “Gallbladder removal, as an example, was once a major surgery involving a large incision and extensive recuperation. Today, the

gallbladder can be removed laparoscopically, with four tiny incisions and about one fourth the recuperation time. “Another dramatic example of MIS is our no-surgery, no-scar way to treat varicose veins in the legs, which are the result of faulty valves in the veins. (As blood flows through our veins to the heart, stop valves are supposed to prevent the blood from flowing backwards as gravity pulls it down. If the valves don’t close properly, blood pools in the vein, forcing the walls to enlarge and bulge out.) “Varicose veins can cause aching, throbbing pain, itching or burning, and unsightly twisted bulging. Tens of millions of people—up to 40% of women and 25% of men—suffer from this condition. Years ago, the only known method for relief was to surgically strip the veins. Today, EndoLaser Venous Therapy (EVLT®) eliminates varicose veins at the source. EVLT uses minimally-invasive targeted laser energy to seal the vein shut...a procedure that usually takes less than an hour and can be performed in the doctor’s office. Patients experience immediate relief of symptoms and a return to normal activity with little or no pain. What’s more, with EVLT, no

anesthesia or hospitalization is needed—and there is no scarring.” All Tallgrass General & Vascular Surgeons are Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery and all are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons. In Topeka they are considered the leaders in utilizing the latest surgical techniques, being the first surgeons to perform the following procedures with the laparoscope: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, adrenalectomy, sigmoid colon resection, subtotal colectomy, hepatic resection, Rouxen-Y Gastric Bypass and Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding. Prior to surgery, your doctor will meet with you and your family to explain everything fully and discuss options regarding the various surgical techniques—and suggest the option he or she feels would work best for you. In addition to Dr. Dunshee, the surgical staff at Tallgrass General & Vascular Surgery at 6001 SW Sixth Avenue, Suite 220, includes: Brent Steward, MD, FACS; Bernita Berntsen, MD, FACS; James J. Hamilton Jr., MD, FACS; Sidney Hu, MD, FACS; Robert Blanken, PA-C and Maxine Brown, ARNP. To learn more about minimally invasive surgery, call 785-2320444 or visit their website: www.tallgrasstopeka.com.

Patient’s Weight Loss Has Given Increased Energy And A New Freedom

Thousands of overweight patients have experienced weight loss success with research-based, medicallymanaged, individualized weight control programs through Doctor Rick Tague’s Center for Nutrition (CFN) clinics in Topeka, Manhattan and Leawood, KS. Dr. Tague is board certified in bariatric medicine—the medical management of overweight conditions. “At the Center for Nutrition, our nutritional treatments are designed to maximize weight control, and provide the individual support each patient needs to achieve success,” says Dr. Tague. “The benefits our patients have received from this approach have been life changing.” Diane Haller, an Occupational Therapist, sought the services of Dr. Tague. She shares her story: “A co-worker led me to Dr. Tague, Diane explains. “I saw how much success she was having in losing weight, so I called the Center for Nutrition for a free consultation. I was starting to experience high blood pressure and shortness of breath, and my decreased flexibility made it difficult to do my job. (It was also hard to talk to my patients about their health when I, obviously, was neglecting mine!) “I began my personalized weight loss program on May 5th, 2006.

It is a major health problem in America today, with an alarming increase in overweight children, adolescents and adults. However, overweight conditions can be controlled through comprehensive medical and nutritional management. Even a weight reduction of 10% can significantly improve an individual’s health. “Our proven nutritional and medical techniques help people achieve weight loss success—perhaps for the first time in their lives. We create individual programs and optimize each person’s nutritional intake to maintain good health and keep their metabolism working efficiently throughout their program.” For more information and a free 40-minute consultation and computerized body composition analysis, call the Center for Nutrition & Preventive Medicine, P.A., at 2840 SW Urish Rd—785-273-4443. Breathe Oxygen & Medical Supply Provides Products For Sleep Apnea Sufferers Topeka’s locally owned full-service provider of respiratory supplies, oxygen and equipment—Breathe Oxygen & Medical Supply—is located at Huntoon and Gage, in Gage Center (just South of McFarland’s Restaurant). “We really focus on ‘one-on-one service’ and personal contact with customers,” says Dennis Bahr, the Regional Manager. “We’re friendly, caring, and we want everyone who comes through our door to feel comfortable here—and happy with our quality service. Corey Everett is Breathe’s Certified Respiratory Therapist. “I joined Breathe about a year ago,” she relates. “I chose to work here because of the warm environment and the exceptional personal attention given to patients. My contact is with patients who require oxygen products and services, respiratory supplies, and patients who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea. “Sleep is vitally important for renewing mental and physical health each day. Unfortunately, more than 100 million Americans of all ages regularly fail to get a good night’s sleep. Some sleep disorders, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), can be life-threatening. OSAS is a disorder of interrupted

Breathe Oxygen & Medical Supply associates breathing during sleep, which can cause frequent awakenings. This problem is associated with loud snoring, though not everyone who snores has this disorder. “The frequent awakenings that untreated sleep apnea patients experience leaves them continually sleepy and may lead to personality changes such as irritability or depression. Sleep apnea also deprives the person of oxygen, which can lead to morning headaches, a loss of interest in sex, or a decline in mental functioning. It is also linked to high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, and an increased risk of heart attacks and stroke. Patients with severe, untreated sleep apnea are two to three times more likely to have automobile accidents than the general population.

“Fortunately sleep specialists are able to diagnose and treat OSAS, which can prevent the potentially dangerous consequences. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a highly effective therapy. A light mask is worn over the nose during sleep and a small, quiet air pump is attached with a long tube, so that air enters the nasal passages and into the throat, holding the throat open and allowing normal sleep and breathing. We offer many CPAP options, and let patients try on different masks to find the one that suits them best. I also go over the workings of the machine they’ll be using until they are thoroughly comfortable with their equipment. “For those patients who require home oxygen for their health, our Helios® personal oxygen system sets the standard for ambulatory oxygen therapy. Helios portables are small, lightweight and long lasting. With a Helios Marathon unit the patient has up to 20 hours away from home on a single fill (on a two-liter flow rate). “Our reliable route drivers deliver oxygen weekly—working with the patient’s schedule. The patient always comes first with us. We want people to use what they need so we make every effort to make it work easily for them.”

Helios® Personal Oxygen Systems In addition to portable oxygen systems Breathe also has: Nebulizer compressors and other respiratory equipment, Jobst compression garments, Jobst SensifootTM diabetic socks, rehab supplies, specialty equipment, Ostomy and Urology supplies, ice grips for canes, walkers, crutches, splints and braces, 4-wheeled walkers, long-handled reachers, ski-glides for walkers, bathroom safety devices and much more. Plus, they can special order many medical supplies. Stop by Breathe Oxygen & Medical Supply in Gage Center, or call 785-272-0445. Their email is: [email protected]. Store hours are 8AM to 5PM Monday through Friday.

The Computer Store—Largest In Topeka “Our move this past summer to our location inside ‘Total Home Concepts’ has established us as the largest computer store in Topeka, with 3,000 square feet of space,” says Jim Driggers, owner of The Computer Store. “Our customer service has established us as Topeka’s PREMIER Computer Store. “We maintain the largest inventory of computer parts in the city, with the greatest number of service technicians. Our association with Total Home Concepts, Topeka’s innovative new shopping experience, enables us to be open seven days a week for the benefit of our working customers. “We are a Dell Solutions Provider, and a certified Microsoft Partner. We also offer extended services through our affiliation with Network Technologies of Kansas—one of Topeka’s largest computer and network consulting companies. “In addition, we provide Network design and set-up, Web and email hosting, DSL internet and many other home and office services. We sell entry-level and quality custombuilt computers and provide computer repair and hardware upgrades— all backed by a local warranty and

using only brand-named internal components to ensure consistent quality and reliability. “To those who are considering buying a computer from a large retailer or by mail order, based on the price—we urge them to think about ‘the service after the sale.’ People complain to us on a daily basis about the frustrations they’ve had after buying from one of the ‘big boys.’ They tell how they’ve wound up talking to someone overseas that they couldn’t understand... or how their computer was shipped ‘somewhere’ to be fixed and they haven’t heard a word on it for six weeks! “We provide on-site and in-shop repairs, and our large staff of technicians assures our customers of a faster turn-around time. Our service department slogan is, ‘We fix what other stores can’t!’ ” The Computer Store is located just inside the West entrance doors of Total Home Concepts. “We Will Rock You!”

Bob and Susan Johnson’s enthusiasm when they talk about their gorgeous “rocks” at The Gem Store is contagious! Their store, located just south of Walgreens in Fleming Place, is brimming with beautiful jewelry of colored gems that they’ve been collecting for years. “My fascination with ‘pretty rocks’ stems back to my childhood,” relates Susan. “Bob and I started investing in gems ‘for real’ about 10 years ago. Then, when he retired, I talked him into opening this store. “Our gorgeous pendants, earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings, as well as our loose stones, are unlike anything most people have ever seen before. We have gemstones (many from mines no longer in operation) that, because of their rarity, are far more valuable than diamonds. “Anyone looking for a truly special Valentine gift needs to stop in. Our ‘Valentine’s Sale,’ which continues through Feb. 17th, offers a 20% discount on all heart-shaped stones and all diamonds. We have sparkling heart shapes in very exotic red Andisine, as well as amethyst, blue topaz, peridot, Moldivaite, Brazilian garnet, citrine and more. “In March—folks can be ‘wearin’ the green.’ Throughout the month, in honor of St. Patty’s Day, all green

Getting Money Back From Taxes?

“This time of the year, people who expect a tax refund are planning ways to spend it,” says Rick Crawford, an advisor with Waddell & Reed, with offices in the Bank of America Tower. “I would like to suggest they consider putting part of that refund into retirement savings. “When is the best time to start saving for retirement? Ideally, a person should start as soon as they begin earning money. Money saved in one’s twenties has much more time to compound and will have a much greater impact than contributions made closer to retirement. A sum of $1,000 invested for 40 years at 7.2% average return will grow to $16,000. That same amount invested with the same return for 10 years will grow to $2,000*. “What about people who are in their mid-years and don’t have much saved? There is no time like the present to start saving. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 made many changes in retirement laws, and I can show a client what changes will specifically benefit their retirement planning. Together, we can look at what income they will need and how much they will need to save in order to achieve their goal. “Now is a good time to remember

Client thanks Rick for his work that the tax man will let people defer tax on any money placed in their IRAs—and there is still time to contribute for 2006. Some people prefer Roth IRAs, which have after tax contributions, but grow tax free if held for at least five years, and withdrawals are begun after the age of 59 1/2.” It’s never too early or too late to gain control of your financial future. It’s the traveler’s best friend, because it destroys parasites and foreign bacteria on contact. Every allergy sufferer needs to know that Oregano oil is an effective, safe treatment for halting their next allergy attack in its tracks. “Oregano oil can also be used topically to treat acne, athlete’s foot, gum disease, ringworm, diaper rash, Rosacea, nail fungus and boils.” Stop by the Health Food Mart, at 1507 SW 21st—purchase one of their store-brand products and receive the second at half price. We encourage them to bring out any family heirlooms they might have tucked away such as unique furniture pieces, lovely glassware, etc. Sometimes a beautiful piece of china or glass will even set the color scheme for a room. “When a room’s theme is established, we can then show how to accentuate and bring out favorite colors by adding new accessory pieces such as framed prints, fabric and the like. “This year marks our 30th Anniversary,” says Melanie Kline, owner of The Linen Tree in Brookwood Center. “To celebrate, and to offer a heartfelt thank-you to all of our wonderful customers, we’ll be offering store specials throughout the entire year. Currently, our big ‘Winter White Sale’ is in progress (through February). Customers will find a great selection of Bath Towels and towel-type Bath Mats marked at 20% off. “I’ve just returned from the huge Atlanta Gift Market and have selected dozens of very special items for our customers that will be arriving all spring. We’ll have lots of cute Easter things, luscious new fragrance collections from Aromatique, and new Aromatique fragrance diffusers. These are very unique decorative porous stones on a beautiful tortoise shell base. When a special oil is put in the base, a wick diffuses the fragrance throughout the room. No flame or electricity is needed, and the fragrances are wonderful. “We’re also excited about a new collection we’ll be carrying called ‘Switchables.’ They are very versatile small stained glass designs that can mount on a night light base, or

Image Is Everything—The Eyes Have It! “First impressions are lasting impressions,” says Laurie Palmer, a licensed Electrologist of the Electrolysis Clinic of Topeka, Inc. “Surveys reveal that the eyes are what people remember most after meeting someone for the first time. “For anyone who is concerned about the image their bushy or unruly eyebrows convey—electrolysis is the way to be rid of that unwanted hair forever. “Unwanted hair can appear in embarrassing places for a variety of reasons. But, whatever the cause, it can undermine self confidence and stand in the way of happiness. Those who use temporary hair removal methods find that within about a week the hair begins to grow back...sometimes even darker and thicker. Electrolysis gets to the root of the problem—literally! Electrolysis (the only technique that permanently removes hair) is performed by inserting a tiny sterilized, disposable probe into the base of a hair follicle. The hair is destroyed by a split-second current of heat.

The sensation that may be felt is assurance that the destructive activity is taking place. We adjust the current setting to release the hair, yet keep discomfort minimal. Results are immediate, although heavy hair growth may require several treatments within a year for complete removal. “Electrolysis sessions, which range from 15 minutes to an hour, can permanently shape eyebrows and eliminate hair on the upper lip, cheeks, chin, arms and bikini line. For many people, permanent hair removal can mean regained self-assurance and confidence along with many other psychological benefits. I hear women say all the time, ‘I wish I would have done this years ago...I’m so happy with the results!’ ” Face the world with renewed self esteem—call the Electrolysis Clinic on SW Huntoon at 785-3577292. Laurie will answer questions and arrange for a free consultation without obligation when you call for an appointment.

Ramona's Gift Shop New In Topeka

Richard Martinez had a dream of being able to work close to home, and having regular work hours so he could take care of his two year old son. “As a single parent, working odd hours made it difficult to be a good father,” says Richard. “I got a taste of the retail business by selling items on the internet...and my dream came true this past December when I was able to open Ramona's Gift Shop (named after my mother) at 1925 NE Seward. “Through an excellent buying source I have access to thousands of gifts at reasonable prices, and I can pass those bargains on to my customers. To my knowledge we’re the only gift shop located in Northeast Topeka, so residents in our area now have convenient shopping without having to drive to the West side of town. Also, we stock many unique items that are not available anywhere else in Topeka. “We offer a wide variety of merchandise and we’re adding new items monthly. Currently, we have some really great gifts for those special Valentines, as well as a large variety of soft, warm blankets, serape blankets and decorative throws in a variety of sizes and patterns, such as Southwest designs, animal prints and religious symbols.

Richard Martinez with son, Vidal “We also have many religious gifts including wall hangings, statues, pictures and clocks. “Our ‘angel bears’ with birthstones are very popular items here, at Ramona’s. Priced at just $9.95 each they make perfect gifts for new born babies, or for special birthdays. “We also carry Kansas-made items such as clean-burning candles made of 100% soy. (The 16-ounce candles burn for 100 hours.) We also have a selection of jackets, tshirts and hats. Our leather jackets are currently marked at 40% off.” Ramona's Gift Shop is located at 1925 NE Seward. They accept Visa & Master Card and offer lay-away. Hours are: 11AM to 7PM Mon.-Sat. You Can Save Money On Medications “Many people are finding, as their new employment contract year begins, that their employers have switched over from co-pay prescription plans to Flex or HSA (Health Savings Account) plans,” relates Eric Enns, owner of Canada Drug of Topeka at 2110 SW Brandywine Lane. “This puts employees in the driver’s seat to shop for the most affordable medications on their own. “Our motto is: ‘Savings for Everybody, Every Day.’ We are able to offer people great savings on prescription drugs through our affiliate Pharmacy in Winnipeg, Canada. Consider these options: A 90-day supply of Fosomax-70mg costs, on the average, $221.89 from local pharmacies. Our Generic from Canada costs only $108 for a 90day supply. Zoloft-100mg would be $284.28 for the brand at local pharmacies for a 90-day supply. Our generic runs $118.84. “Medications are less expensive in Canada due to government negotiations with the pharmaceutical companies for a much better price. Plus, Generics are more readily available from Canada because drug patents are not allowed to last as long as they do in the United States. “Many generics are available for

Eric Enns, owner the majority of maintenance medications generally prescribed. (We are happy to give anyone a cost comparison over the phone.) All can benefit from our lower prices, especially those who are self-employed, between jobs, are independent contractors, or have inadequate prescription plans. Those on Medicare can also benefit—during that ‘gap’ in Plan D, or when refused coverage on some medications such as Celebrex.” It’s easy to take advantage of these savings. Take your written prescription to Canada Drug of Topeka, at 2110 SW Brandywine Lane - Suite 140, and within two weeks your medications will arrive at your door by mail. Call 785-272-6100 for a free comparison quote on your own medications, and make the most of your Flex account and HSA dollars!

Quality Early Age Musical Experiences Enhance A Child’s Learning Abilities “Introducing a child to music at an early age is a gift that will last through his or her lifetime,” says Dr. Sylvia Hamilton, Director of Music & Movement with Miss Sylvia. “It also enhances their learning abilities...and it’s a happy time for them. A child’s first musical experience with their voice and body is the starting point for all other musical explorations. “My Music Makers Around The World class is part of Collegiate’s ‘After-School Adventures’ program. The course, for kindergarten through grade three, explores the cultures and communities of the British Isles, Amerindians, Germany and African-American heritage through their music, songs, dances, stories and celebrations. The course enables children to build their musical skills toward a natural progression of learning rhythm and pitch, ensemble development, instrument playing and writing/reading music. Parents may register through Topeka Collegiate School—785-228-0490.” All other Music & Movement classes are held at Grace Episcopal Cathedral at 701 SW 8th. Course offerings include: Family Music for Babies and for Toddlers; Music of

the Seasons—ages 3 to 5; and Music Makers At Home in the World—for ages 5 to 8. “All classes encourage the development of the natural musical gifts children are born with,” shares Sylvia. “By helping children reach their full music potential, we help them grow and come into their own as well-rounded human beings.” Dr. Hamilton received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from K.U. in 1995. She is Level II certified through the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association. Cool Season Lawns Are Waking Up The locally owned and operated business, Grasslands Lawn Service, puts all of their effort into keeping lawns green and healthy. “It’s time for the early spring application for cool season lawns,” says Kevin Negus, Grasslands’ owner. “Lawns are ‘waking up’ for the year and this first, crucial application of the season is for very hard to control grassy weeds. An early spring application contains a pre-emergent to help control crabgrass and foxtail, plus a maintenance level of fertilizer for gradual stimulation of grass. (Too much fertilizer in the spring is not good...it over-stimulates the grass coming out of dormancy, which makes the turf more susceptible to drought and heat stress, and it increases unwanted weeds.)” Grasslands offers two programs to meet the needs of different types of lawns. A cool season program for fescue-type grasses, and a special program for warm season grasses—Bermuda and Zoysia. Kevin explains that Bermuda and Zoysia should not be fertilized until late spring when the grass comes out

of dormancy. “It’s healthier,” he says, “for a lawn to have the correct type of program, rather than overdoing it with unnecessary applications. “Our services include full lawn care applications, mowing and trimming. We serve ‘Topeka and vicinity’ homes and businesses. “Our clients tell us they also appreciate the fact that we’re a locally owned business who also helps keep Topeka ‘green’ by supporting local merchants with our supply purchases.” Kevin encourages you to be sure that your lawn care provider is in full compliance with the law. “Any lawn service applying lawn treatments must be licensed and certified with the State of Kansas Board of Agriculture and fully insured,” he says. “For your protection—when contracting with a lawn service company, be sure to ask for their pesticide business license number and proof of insurance.” Call Grasslands Lawn Service today at 785-234-2285 for a lawn care estimate, and be sure to ask about their combo mowing and lawn treatment special for 2007.

Hypnotherapy Can Help You Stay On Track To Achieve Your Goals In Life

“We all have within ourselves the resources and abilities to address any of the problems in our lives. We just need to learn how to tap into that knowledge,” says Sheri Daudet a board certified clinical hypnotherapist and owner of Creative Self Hypnotherapy. “No one sets a goal with the intention of not ‘sticking with it.’ Unfortunately, when the going gets rough, or other things take precedence, determination can dwindle rapidly. Hypnotherapy can help a person stay on track to achieve their goals in life. “I work with many different problems. Some clients want to destress...manage anger...face their fears, or improve their health. The majority of clients want to learn to manage weight or stop smoking. “Hypnotherapy holds that ‘our thoughts create our reality and determine our experience of life.’ Helping a person become aware of how negative thought patterns are affecting their life can create a change in outlook and behavior that is healing and transforming. Losing weight, for instance, can be accomplished by learning how to recognize and overcome negative thought patterns about exercise, food and one’s own

Sheri Daudet, hypnotherapist self image. By learning, through hypnosis, how to replace negative thoughts and guilt feelings with positive, beneficial thoughts, a person can stay on track to achieve weight loss and improved health, both physically and mentally.” Sheri Daudet is an American Council of Hypnotist Examiners board-certified clinical hypnotherapist. One of the more unique services she offers is “past life regression.” Some choose to do this, she explains, as part of their personal inner growth. “With so many new restaurants in the Topeka area, people get curious about trying out something new,” says Walt McFarland, owner of Walt McFarland’s Restaurant in the Gage Shopping Center. “However, once they’ve tried ‘em, they keep coming back to us. There are many reasons folks enjoy dining here. For over seventy years McFarland’s has offered the “taste of home”—serving meals just like Mom used to fix, using only the freshest and most flavorful ingredients. We offer consistent quality and a wide variety, and we provide a clean, pleasant, calm, friendly and smoke-free atmosphere. “Most of our lunch and dinner entrees are served with home-baked rolls and choices of salads, vegetables and delicious desserts. We also offer tempting appetizers such as Creamy Spinach-Artichoke Dip and our popular favorite—Mexican Mania, featuring lots of crispy chips topped with spicy chili, sharp

cheddar, salsa, sour cream and guacamole...ummm! “Our menu also includes chili cheese fries and large-order onion rings—and our Chicken Livers, Breaded Large Fan Tail Shrimp or Coconut Shrimp are available as appetizers or they can be ordered as full meals. “Our number one goal is pleasing our customers. That’s why we offer a wide selection to appeal to every appetite. Where else in town can a family find Steak, Seafood, Stir Fry, Burgers, Liver & Onions, Fajitas and delicious Salads all on the same menu? Adults may even order their favorite wine, beer or mixed drinks.” McFarland’s will be open on Valentines Day, offering delectable specials for you and your loved one. If you’re tired of eating the same old chain food fare, enjoy the variety at Walt McFarland’s, located in the NW corner of Gage Center at Gage & Huntoon. Call 785-2726909 for carry-out orders.

Do You Have A Road Map For Your Financial Future? “Seeing our dreams come true is often dependent upon the choices we make throughout our lives,” says Jim Garrison, State Farm Agent. “That’s why planning carefully and making smart choices helps us realize financial dreams and goals. Whether the dream or goal is to save enough for a child’s college education or a new house, or to be able to start a new business, or retire by age 55—everyone needs a road map and an action plan to reach their destination. “Someone who already has laid out a road map to their financial goals may want to consider how long it’s been since they’ve reviewed it. As family circumstances and finances change, plans may need to be adjusted to make sure they are still headed in the right direction. “Those who don’t have an action plan may be wondering where to start. Consider enlisting the help of a qualified State Farm financial services specialist. Several companies offer personalized services designed to come up with practical solutions. The important thing is to start today.”

Don’t Let April 15th Pass You By! “April 15th has long been considered a date to dread,” says Jim. “Wouldn’t it be nice if people could do something to lower their federal income tax burden instead of mailing a big check to the IRS? A traditional Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA) may be able to do just that. “A contribution of the 2006 maximum of $4,000 prior to April 16th, 2007, could reduce taxable income, making the federal tax burden less for the year. People who turned 50 or older by the end of 2006 can add a $500 catch-up contribution to potentially reduce the tax burden even more.” If you already have a traditional IRA, plan to make a contribution prior to the April 16 deadline. If you don’t have an IRA, talk to Jim Garrison as soon as possible. There are restrictions governing who may contribute to a traditional IRA. If you don’t qualify, consider a Roth IRA. It’s taxable, but withdrawals aren't. Planning for retirement is important. You owe it to yourself to make the best plan as soon as possible. Call Jim Garrison now at 785272-0332, or stop by his office in Fairlawn Plaza.

New Lola’s Café At 21st & Urish Road

The owners and employees of Lola’s Café are rightly proud of their attractive new second location, which recently opened at 21st and Urish Road, in the new Urish Center shopping center. “We opened our new location just this past October,” says Summer Hull, Managing Partner. “The new Lola’s features the same great selection of coffee and espresso drinks, smoothies, sandwiches, wraps, paninis, pastries and desserts as the original Lola’s Café (at 10th & Gage in the Fleming Place shopping center). The menus at both locations, however, are growing. “Part of the reason for opening a second location was to expand our kitchen. The kitchen in our new site is roughly five times the size of the original. This gives us the needed space to prepare a wider variety of items plus favorites such as our fresh fruit salads, Greek salads, cookies or pastries, and we’re able to supply both Lola’s from our new facility. “Broader Catering capability is another benefit of the new café. Our catering business really took off this past year, but we were completely tapped out at our first location. The

They include kitchen supplies, linens, utilities, high-speed internet, cable, and even a selection of books to read during off hours. We also offer the amenities of front-door entrances, private parking spots, personal mailboxes, and all the ambiance of home. “People are surprised to find that our rates are typically 20-to-40% below that of a standard hotel room. Window Design Company Invites You To “Change Your Home Today!”

It’s February and Spring will be here before you know it. That’s why “Now’s a great time to be starting your next home enhancement project,” says Rod Roberson, President of Window Design Company, Inc. “If customers will meet with us now before the weather warms up and the trade shows come, their projects will already be designed and installed by the time others waiting for the trade shows are just getting started with theirs.” Mr. Roberson mentioned Window Design Company’s new website, saying, “If your readers will go online to windowdesignco.com, they’ll find a wealth of information

about all of our great products and services. For instance, if they’ll click on Current Promotions, they’ll find they can receive a 10% tax credit (up to $200 maximum) when they replace their old windows with new

Energy Star qualified products. (Tax credit good through 12-31-07) One of these products is made by UniFrameTM. It has an insulating

value of R-10 with triple pane glass which is five times more energy efficient than most other windows. Using products like these can cut your heating and cooling bills as much as 40%! “An average window in a home is approximately 15 square feet in size. Most homes have at least 10 windows, which adds up to 150 square feet of wall space where there is virtually no insulation. A single-pane window with a storm window has an R-value (insulating value) of 2 or less. The higher the number the better the insulating value. In addition, most windows are poorly insulated around the frames. “Economy models may seem fine at first glance, but like so many

things, it’s what’s on the inside that counts. UniframeTM windows feature state-of-the-art materials, precision engineering and proven construction methods for windows that last a lifetime. “UniframeTM windows also have a warranty unlike any other in the industry. A full lifetime non prorated warranty on the complete window system, including the seal on the glass, and the warranty is transferrable. (Subsequent owner receives a 50 year warranty as well.) “We’ve recently added some new blinds between-the-panes window and door products from Sunrise and Vanguard, as well as new composite decking materials and deck railing systems. Those who are considering home remodeling projects owe it to themselves to get online and go to windowdesignco.com to check out everything we do.” Whether it’s Windows, Doors, 25foot Seamless Vinyl Siding, Steel Siding, a Deck, Screen Room or Sunroom, even a Kitchen or Bath makeover, or an entire Room Addition, WDC has the right products, people and passion to do the job right.
