Fall 2014

Paw Prints HALO PET ADOPTION CENTER OPENS IN METRO CENTER MALL

In April, HALO was presented an exciting prospect. Our friends at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control elected not to renew the lease of their Under One Woof pet adoption store at Metro Center Mall. The mall hoped that HALO would step in to continue offering pets for adoption from the store. We embraced the opportunity to match even more pets with new families – MCACC placed over 1,200 pets into forever homes in 2013 at this location – and on May 31st we celebrated the grand opening of the HALO Pet Adoption Center. Since opening, the center has already adopted out more than 400 pets! The new mall location creates greater visibility for HALO in north central Phoenix. We work with the neighboring community to increase awareness about the importance of spaying/neutering, pet health and safety, and microchipping. Besides the many adorable pets waiting for their new homes, HALO Pet Adoption Center features a wide selection of retail items needed to care for a new furry family member. Please stop by and say hello! HALO Pet Adoption Center Located inside Metro Center Mall on the lower level near Sears 9617 N. May was a busy month at HALO! We were very fortunate to participate in Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days, a national free pet adoption event on May 31st and June 1st.

MADDIE’S PET ADOPTION DAYS ACHIEVES RECORD NUMBER OF ADOPTIONS

Maddie’s Fund (www.maddiesfund. org), a valued long-time HALO supporter, sponsors the Maddie’s Pet Adoption Days annually in different U.S. communities with high homeless pet populations. Each year Maddie’s sets aside money – $10 million in 2014 – to underwrite no-cost adoptions to the public. This year’s event included 10 other animal welfare groups in Maricopa County, and more than 200 total rescue groups in nine states. Over 15,000 pets were adopted out nationally during the event! We adopted an astounding 411 pets into forever homes during the two-day event – 345 dogs and 66 cats – a new HALO record for adoptions in one weekend! Together, the Maricopa County animal welfare community placed 2,000 homeless animals into new homes during the event. HALO received a grant of $250,500 as a result of our adoptions during Maddie’s 2014 adoption event. An enormous thank you to Maddie’s Fund for sponsoring this amazing event!

PETSMART CHARITIES HELPS HALO SAVE LIVES PetSmart Charities has generously supported HALO for many years. We’re very grateful to have received a grant for $100,296 in July 2014. The grant will allow us to treat a greater number of dogs with medical conditions – dogs that might otherwise be considered unadoptable because of treatable conditions like an upper respiratory infection or a broken bone. In addition to providing much needed grant funding, PetSmart Charities helps HALO and many other animal rescues across the country find new homes for thousands of pets. On August 2-3, HALO was able to find happy new forever homes for 215 dogs and cats during PetSmart Charities Adopt-A-Pet Weekend, one of the many adoption events sponsored by PetSmart Charities throughout the year. Thank you, PetSmart Charities, for helping us save more lives!

HALO JOINS NORTH SHORE ANIMAL LEAGUE’S 2014 TOUR FOR LIFE® There was a lot going on at HALO this Spring! We were fortunate to be included in Tour For Life®, a life-saving nationwide adoption tour sponsored annually by North Shore Animal League America’s (NSALA) and Purina ProPlan®. In early Spring 2014, Tour For Life® partnered with 150 shelters and rescue groups in 52 states to bring attention to and find homes for homeless animals. On April 30th, a Tour For Life® bus pulled into HALO’s main shelter where it was quickly loaded with adoptable dogs and sent on its noisy way to its ultimate destination – a PetSmart parking lot where we set up the adoption event, block-party style. Lots of HALO staff and volunteers where there to greet them. Also joining the fun were MCACC’s Mobile Adoption Unit loaded with more adoptable pets; Desert Schools Federal Credit Union’s ShineOn exhibit; and some yummy food trucks – Saffron Jak’s Pizza and Frosted Frenzy Cupcakes. HALO found new homes for 145 pets during the four-hour event. MCACC also placed several pets into new homes. A big thank you to everyone who came out to adopt at Tour For Life! 4

In June 2014, HALO was honored to be the non-profit organization chosen to be the recipient of a charitable giving campaign called Pay It Forward, sponsored by local TV station CBS5/KPHO, Wells Fargo, and COX Communications. The week of June 16th was all about HALO at CBS5. Almost every daily newscast included a segment featuring various HALO pets, all now happily adopted. The station also sponsored a televised two-hour phone bank fundraiser, staffed by a dozen of HALO’s amazing volunteers, where pledges from callers surpassed $15,000!

LOCAL TV STATION PAYS IT FORWARD TO HALO ANIMAL RESCUE

On Saturday, June 21st, CBS5 and HALO had a fantastic day together during the Pay It Forward adoption event. The CBS5 Surprise Squad popped into the HALO Pet Adoption Center where they elated many adopters by stepping in to pay their adoption fees – and to purchase lots of toys and supplies for their new pets! Together, HALO and CBS5 accomplished an outstanding 85 adoptions for the day! Our sincere gratitude to CBS5 for inviting HALO to be part of this fantastic program.

HALO’S HEATHER ALLEN TO SPEAK AT 2014 BEST FRIENDS NATIONAL CONFERENCE We’re very proud to announce that HALO Co-founder, President and CEO Heather Allen has been honored with an invitation to speak at the 2014 Best Friends National Conference! Heather will be in Las Vegas from October 23-26 to share her knowledge and experience about creating Arizona’s first public-private partnership between two animal welfare agencies. In HALO’s first year of partnership with Maricopa County Animal Care & Control, the live release rate at the shelter increased by 12%. For more details, visit bestfriends.org.

TAKE THE 90 DAY HALO SPONSOR-A-BULL CHALLENGE More pit bulls enter U.S. shelters than any other canine breed. Pit bulls in Maricopa County are at extremely high risk for euthanasia. For every ten pit bulls entering our shelter system, only three will be adopted into new homes. The other seven will be euthanized. It’s a disturbing reality, one that HALO is committed to changing for the better. We’ve set a goal to help 300 pit bulls find forever homes by year’s end. Between October 1st and December 31st, HALO will waive the adoption fees for all pit bulls and pit bull mixes aged six months and older. Help us save more lives by joining the SPONSOR-A-BULL CHALLENGE.

Your gift of $125 will sponsor the adoption of a pit bull in desperate need of a loving forever home. You may donate on line at halorescue.org, or simply fill out the inserted form.

HALO Animal Rescue

NEW MEDICAL EQUIPMENT PROVIDES BETTER, FASTER CARE FOR THE ANIMALS We’re well into our second year of partnership with Maricopa County Animal Care & Control (MCACC). Together, we’ve worked to improve the shelter’s quality of animal care by refining and reworking existing procedures and protocols. We developed some new ones too, like our Parvo Pathway – designed to give us quicker, medically safe methods of handling puppies coming into the shelter to keep them healthy. As part of our ongoing commitment to elevating the standards of care our animals receive, we also purchased two key pieces of medical equipment–a digital x-ray machine and a blood work machine. Both will greatly improve treatment times as well as quality of care for animals in our shelter. The blood work machine, purchased with a very generous donation from HALO supporter Jeannie Bullard, enables the animal care staff to analyze blood work in-house. Blood analysis is often crucial in detecting a number of medical conditions and illnesses. Until the new machine arrived, blood work was sent to an off-site lab for analysis, with results sometimes taking days to come back. The new machine is kept in HALO’s treatment room where it’s easily accessible to both MCACC and HALO animal care teams. HALO was able to buy the digital x-ray machine with cash in savings, and in the spirit of paying it forward, we donated it to MCACC’s veterinarian clinic. Now their doctors can take detailed x-rays on site in seconds. Previously we had to send sick or injured animals to an off-site clinic for x-rays, which often took hours, sometimes even days, and created additional stress for the animals. Along with several MCACC doctors and vet techs, President & CEO Heather Allen and Kim Zikmanis, HALO’s Animal Care Manager, are now trained digital x-ray technicians. A huge thank you to Jeannie Bullard for making the purchase of the blood work machine possible!

HALO’s Heather Allen and MCACC’s Amy Andrews work together on the new digital x-ray machine.

Sincere Thanks to Purina One and Tidy Cats! The right nutrition can make the difference for shelter pets by helping them look and feel their best and improving their chances of adoption. Thank you for providing all our food and litter, absolutely free!

HALO CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF CARING FOR HOMELESS PETS It’s hard to believe, but HALO turned 20 this year! We’ve grown from our humble beginnings in the homes of founders Heather Allen and Michel Herstam to become the largest no-kill animal shelter in Phoenix, with a record 7,073 pets adopted into loving new homes last year. We were thrilled to see 120 pets go to happy new homes during our birthday bash! A huge, heartfelt thank you to all of our amazing donors and volunteers who continue to support us over the years.
