Letter From

The Mayor

Dear Neighbors

W

Mayor Patrick A. Ward

elcome to our inaugural issue of Lyndhurst Life Magazine! By the time this goes to print and arrives at your door, we will (hopefully) be looking at the onset of spring and its promise of the warmer days ahead. I will now be in the middle of my third month serving as your Mayor and I hope that each of you will see at least some of the good my administration and our Council have been doing to address the problems or issues facing our City as well as to support the many positive things our community has to offer. I am referring to this first publication as the “transition issue” as it marks the transition of Mayor Cicero’s administration to mine. It is also a transition from several means of communicating with our residents to one and we are highlighting some of our businesses that have transitioned from prior management to new, have brought a new use to life or are just new to Lyndhurst. Exciting things are happening in our community! At Legacy Village, we have the new L.L.Bean store that opened in November and a new retailer, Soft Surroundings (an awesome store ladies) that will be opening soon. We also are looking at the Hyatt Place Hotel (opening in June) and The Capital Grille (opening this summer) as tremendous new additions to the Legacy Village family. Our Mayfield Road corridor is gaining interest as well with proposals that may transform certain parcels to wonderful new usefulness more representative of our community! I hope to fill the pages of future editions with news of new development. You will also read, elsewhere in this edition – news of existing

storefronts that have experienced transition that we are excited to share with you. Another thing that I hope to share with you is the ways that we can be better neighbors – those things that we, who have lived here for any length of time remember as enamoring us to Lyndhurst in the first place and set our community apart from our neighbors. I hope that you will read through these and share our view; that it is only by working together we can keep our Community of Neighbors that place where we move to, raise our family and retire. I look forward to hearing from you should you have any compliments, comments or concerns. It is my honor to be at your service.

Sincerely,

Patrick A. Ward Mayor [email protected] 440.442.5777

Pet Safety

You can find your way home quickly. Your pet may not.

A

s winter fades and the mercury rises, most of us will be anxious to open our windows for fresh air and get outside for the warmth of the spring sunshine. Those who own dogs and cats will be joined by their faithful friends who have an even greater and natural yearning for the outdoors. Being a dog or cat owner is an enjoyable experience but comes with significant responsibilities to care for and protect these curious creatures who often have a desire to roam. According to one national study, fewer than 2% of lost cats and only 15-20% of lost dogs are ever returned to their guardians. Even the most responsible pet owners can recall a frantic time when their dog or cat slipped out the door, was accidentally let outside by a child, scratched a hole under the fence, nudged open a gate, or pulled loose from its collar. One of the most important, least costly, and highly effective method to help reunite your pet with you in the event it wanders away, is a collar and identification tag. The tag should include your address and phone number, in addition to the registration tag required by state and local law. The heartbreaking tragedy of a pet struck by a car shouldn’t be the only fear for the owner of a dog or cat that gets loose. These pets are subject to numerous risks including unwanted reproduction and conflicts with other

6

lyndhurst-oh.com | facebook.com/CityOfLyndhurstOhio

animals, domestic or wild, that may expose them to disease or injury. Owners of pets running at large face criminal prosecution for violations of animal and nuisance laws, and potential civil liability for injuries they may cause to people. A lost pet rescued by Lyndhurst Animal Control officers will result in a kenneling fee. You can find your way home quickly. Your pet may not. If you do not have a collar and tag on your dog or cat, make the commitment to visit your local pet store soon. Give your pet the gift of an inexpensive ID tag, a basic necessity for pet care and sign of responsible pet ownership.

ArcFit for the Future!

O Linda N. Reid

8

n behalf of the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools, I hope that everyone has enjoyed the holiday season and the start of the new year. This time of the calendar year always brings a sense of anticipation, hope and an eagerness to pursue new endeavors. Such is the case with our local school district, which recently launched a state-of-theart, learning and training facility, named the ArcFit Training Center. As a way to directly meet the intended career pursuits amongst the Brush High School student population, this training complex will be a true learning laboratory open and available to all students, student-athletes and staff members. An official launch ceremony took place this past November where more than 225 people attended the event. Perhaps the most important piece of data is that when surveyed late last year, more than 53% of Brush High School students signified an interest or intent to pursue a career in the health or health sciences field. With this information, the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools determined we had an obligation to pursue any and all opportunities that would help to prepare our students for the future. The SEL Schools’ desire with the launch of this project is to get its students career-ready, and this facility, including the training aspects, the classrooms and curriculum involved, will have the potential to do just that. The ArcFit Training Center is located in the area of the former auto tech garage and has been completely retrofitted with upgrades and enhancements. On its face value, the facility is more than a weight room. It is a comprehensive learning complex that includes classrooms for health, wellness, health science and physical education classes as well as student-athlete training facilities. Brush High School anticipates hosting classes here as early as the 2016-2017 school year. Sample coursework may include medical technology and terminology, health sciences, exercise physiology,

lyndhurst-oh.com | facebook.com/CityOfLyndhurstOhio

biochemistry, nutrition and wellness. Brush’s ideal location in the heart of one of the most progressive areas for health care makes the significance of this facility all the more important to propel our students forward in the future. The SEL Schools plan to host a number of other opportunities for the communityat-large to see this facility and experience it for themselves firsthand. Please stay tuned for more information about this wonderful new facility for our students. Thank you for your continued support of the SEL Schools.

Lyndhurst made history on February 12 when families from two beloved Catholic grade schools joined forces and formed a new school to keep Catholic education alive and thriving in our area. Saint Clare School in Lyndhurst and Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy (formerly Saint Gregory the Great) in South Euclid officially merged to create a new school called Corpus Christi Academy. This merger brings together two schools with a combined 160 year legacies, both with excellent reputations for academics, family bonds and strong traditions. The newly formed Corpus Christi Academy (CCA) will be located on the Saint Clare School campus at 5655 Mayfield Road and will offer preschool and K-8 classes starting in the fall of 2016. 237 students (and growing) are already registered and new programs are planned as the schools can now share resources for more

academic and extracurricular programs, an art program, more extensive drama and music offerings, more clubs and a stronger athletic program. Technology and library resources from both schools will be combined, giving greater opportunities to students. While families from Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy are sad to leave their beloved school grounds, many parents recognize it is not the buildings but the families and students who made the Sacred Heart community so strong. Parents from both schools are helping launch the new Corpus Christi Academy, working with the merger steering

Our staff will help you make the transition with informative advice and caring guidance. We understand the challenges of giving up smoking but we can make it your reality with our knowledgeable staff and large selection of electronic products. Kalamazoo Vapor opened its first Cleveland area vapor shop in the spring of 2014. Our store is located at 9201 Mentor Ave., Mentor, Ohio. This location got off to a fast start and developed a loyal clientele base due to its friendly, helpful staff and an extensive variety of products for beginner to advanced vapors. Following the success of our Mentor location, we quickly opened a second location four months later at 6113 Olde York Road in Parma Heights. Together, the two stores have helped to position Kalamazoo Vapor as a leading vapor supply shop in the Cleveland marketplace. We opened our third store in March 2015 at 5118 Mayfield Road in Lyndhurst. Our growth plans continue with a fourth location underway this year in the Toledo area. The desserts are nothing short of amazing! The space is beautifully appointed, warm and rustic, with Indonesian wood tables. The staff is friendly and well versed on the regular menu items and specials. Every dish, from the Arnichini Appetizer, salads made fresh when ordered, pasta dishes or even the thick cut pork chop with the chef’s special glaze; Abo’s takes pride in the fact that everything is made in house. You will be pleased to know, with our busy lives and fast-paced world, that Abo’s complete menu is available for carry-out. We even have a separate carry-out entrance to make pick-up quick and easy! Abo’s is open for lunch and dinner with special luncheon pricing and light-fare features. Abo’s is located at 5288 Mayfield Road, across from the Lyndhurst City Hall, and can be reached at 440.409.7000 for reservations or carry-out.

Lake Erie Starts Here!

Y

our home is the first line of defense for the health of Lake Erie!

Rain and snow melt that runs over your property and into the storm drain goes to our waterways untreated. It brings with it stormwater pollutants such as fertilizers, pesticides, dog waste, winter road salt, oil and gas, litter, eroded soil, and so much more. You can help be the solution to storm water pollution and contribute to the health of our Great Lake!

s

Plant a rain garden to capture and infiltrate storm water runoff.

s

Install a rain barrel and harvest water on-site to water a garden or lawn.

s

Properly maintain your car to avoid oil and gas leaks.

s

Use road salt sparingly and sensibly and sweep up extra.

s

Establish a no-mow zone around backyard streams and wetlands.

s

Pick up after your dog to avoid bacteria like E. coli washing into storm drains.

s

Remove some turf grass and replace with native plants.

s

Wash your car on the lawn or take it to a commercial car wash.
