HISTORY Oakland Plantation
Oakland Plantation Chambers/Quantico Plantation
•Josiah Chambers purchased 6,000 acres in the early 1800’s. • Josiah Jr. upgraded the property and developed strong transportation links via roads, bayou navigation, and railroad. • Built a race track • Eventually included almost 10,000 acres of which 2,500 were improved. • Oakland was a very diversified plantation, inventory included: 46 horses 53 working oxen 119 asses and mules 330 head of cattle 300 sheep 440 swine 336 slaves • Oakland produced annually: 750 bales cotton 678 hogheads sugar 20,000 bushels corn 700 1bs wool 600 bushels beans 600 bushels irish potatoes 3,500 bushels sweet potatoes • After the civil war Chambers was forced to sell 5,000 acres to avoid bankruptucy

HISTORY Dean Lee Research Station

•Acquired by the Board of Supervisors in 1945 for establishment of agricultural and vocational schools • In 1968 the research station became part of the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station and is one of 17 branch locations. • Comprises 2,900 acres of land, 1,750 of which are in pasture or cultivation. The remaining is in hardwood timber. • Research is conducted on weed control, agronomic crops, beef cattle, swine and livestock performance testing. Much of the research is applicable to other parts of the state and the southern region of the United States.
