LSU Athletics Facilities LSU is very proud of its fine athletic facilities and believes it has one of the best overall athletic complexes in the nation. The facilities serve as home to the LSU teams as well as hosting many other athletic events. All of the facilities, except the new championship golf course completed in 1998, are located on the Baton Rouge campus, making travel to and from practice and competition very convenient for the athletes.
ALEX BOX STADIUM Alex Box Stadium, the home of the LSU Fighting Tigers, has a storied history that spans several decades. Always known as an excellent facility, recent efforts to upgrade the stadium have made it comparable to that of most professional minor-league clubs. Last season, the Tigers drew 271,179 fans to Alex Box Stadium as LSU finished first in the nation in overall attendance for the seventh straight year. LSU has been among the nation’s attendance leaders for the past 12 seasons, finishing No. 5 in 1991, No. 6 in 1992, No. 4 in 1993, No. 3 in 1994 and 1995, and No. 1 in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. Over the past 19 seasons, the Tigers attracted nearly three million fans to Alex Box Stadium. A total of 2,858,648 patrons have watched the Tigers play at “The Box” since 1984. The stadium is recognized both for its old-fashioned charm and for its modern renovations. Since 1985, it has been the site of four Southeastern Conference tournaments, 14 NCAA regional tournaments, two NCAA super regional series and one ABCA Hall of Fame tournament. Each year, “The Box” undergoes facility-improvement projects designed to enhance the comfort and enjoyment of LSU baseball fans. The “Intimidator” billboard depicting LSU’s NCAA titles was unveiled in Alex Box Stadium prior to the ‘97 season. It stands above the right field wall as a testament to LSU’s baseball excellence. Some of the other recent additions to the stadium include a players’ meeting room which can also be utilized as a facility for receptions and press conferences, and a “Home Run Village” parking area behind the outfield fence which allows fans to tailgate before and during games. A new outfield fence was installed in 1995 with a 15-foot hitters’ backdrop in center field. In 1994, “The Box” featured a freshly renovated and expanded players’ locker room and lounge, along with a refurbished press box and additional chairback seats in the grandstand. In 1993, an advanced outfield drainage system was installed along with additional bleacher seating behind first base. Renovations for the 1991 season included the installation of a new grandstand roof and the construction of a playground/picnic area behind the left-field bleachers. “The Box” also features a modern scoreboard and message center, a state-of-the-art sound system, luminous field lighting, an underground field sprinkler system, a beautifully landscaped entranceway and spacious restroom facilities. Originally a 2,500seat facility, the concrete and steel grandstand of Alex Box Stadium was completed in 1938. STADIUM INFORMATION Seating Capacity – 8,000 Playing Surface - Natural grass
BERNIE MOORE OUTDOOR TRACK STADIUM LSU is very proud of its excellent outdoor track facility, as it is one of the finest in the nation. It was named in 1971 after the legendary Bernie Moore, who coached the LSU track team for 18 years. The stadium has been host to four NCAA Championships (1973, 1981, 1987, and 2002) as well as the 1984, 1991, and 2000 SEC Championships. It has also served as host to many other championship events. This track facility is completely spectator friendly, as all track and field events can be observed from the 5000-seat stadium. There is a 9-lane, 400meter oval along with a 9-lane straightaway for sprints and hurdles in the middle. There are six long jump pits, two shot put areas, two hammer cages, four pole vault pits, and three discus cages, in addition to a javelin runway. The high jump area can have three competitions going on at the same time. The track was completely resurfaced in a major renovation at the end of 1998. Event parking is available in the Bernie Moore lot, along Nicholson drive, or West Stadium parking lot.
CARL MADDOX INDOOR TRACK AT THE LSU FIELD HOUSE The LSU field House is the indoor home of the Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Teams. Completed in 1975, this 6-lane, 200-meter running track has been the site of many SEC Championships as well as the LSU High School Indoor Classic that is one of the premier high school meets held each year and the Louisiana State Indoor Championships. This 2400-seat facility is one of only 4 indoor tracks in the SEC. Parking is available in the two lots on the east side of the building, Graham Hall lot, as well as Bernie Moore lot.
LSU NATATORIUM The LSU Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Teams compete in the LSU Natatorium. This facility was constructed to be the host site for the 1985 National Sports Festival. The 50meter pool can be divided into two 25 yard or 25 meter pools with it’s moveable bulkheads. The pool is 8 feet in depth throughout. There is a separate diving pool that is 16 feet deep and 25 yards wide, and that is equipped with two 1 meter boards, two 3 meter boards, and a 5, 7, and 10 meter platform. Divers have a hot tub available for use between dives. There is a fully computerized scoring and timing system that was updated in 1998. Seating is available for up to 1000 spectators and competitors. New locker rooms for both men’s and women’s team were completed in 1998. Parking is available in the lot on the north side of the natatorium, along Chimes street, or in Graham Hall or Kirby Smith parking lots.
LSU Athletics Facilities (continued) MARAVICH CENTER
TIGER PARK
The Pete Maravich Assembly Center is the host facility for Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball and Gymnastics. The building seats 14,162 for basketball with smaller configurations available for other events. The building also houses modern and recently renovated locker rooms for the LSU teams using the building, two visiting team locker rooms; officials rooms, an auxiliary practice gym, and a training room. The Assembly Center hosts many campus events and concerts throughout the year. Team parking for events will be allowed in the gated lot on the east side of the building, however, advance notification with the host team will be needed. Public parking is available for events other than Men’s basketball on North Stadium Road in front of the Assembly Center, West Stadium parking lot behind Tiger Stadium, and the paved lot behind the Assembly Center. For Men’s Basketball certain areas will be blocked off for permit parking. Any area not blocked off will be available for general public parking.
Tiger Park is the home of the LSU Softball Lady Tigers. Completed in 1996 it is one of the best softball facilities in the south. This park seats just over 1,000 spectators with plenty of room for expansion as needed. The dimensions are 200 feet to both foul poles and 220 feet to center field. The stadium features an enclosed air conditioned press box, an inning by inning scoreboard, and a modern sound system that has many music capabilities. Tiger Park is located behind Dub Robinson Tennis Courts, and almost adjacent to the Natatorium and Field House. Public parking is available in either the Graham Hall, Kirby Smith, or the Tennis Court parking lots. Teams will enter the main gate on the side on Cypress Drive. They may unload in front of the gate and then park in Graham Lot.
ROBINSON TENNIS COMPLEX The “Dub” Robinson Tennis Complex consists of six practice courts. The six varsity courts were resurfaced in the fall of 1994. The six practice courts are immediately adjacent to the tennis stadium. The varsity courts feature an electronic scoreboard and can accommodate up to 550 spectators under the covered grandstand. Team and public parking is available in the tennis court lot immediately south of the stadium and Graham Hall lot across the street to the east. The men’s and women’s locker rooms were completely renovated in 2001.
SOCCER COMPLEX The LSU Soccer Complex is the site of all the Women’s Soccer teams’ home events, as well as the 2001 SEC Soccer Championships. This new facility was opened on September 13, 1996. The lighted facility has a state of the art scoreboard, sound system, and covered press box. There is ample seating with over 1000 seats available. In addition, there is plenty of parking available in the gravel lot right next to the park. Teams will enter the east entrance and should park near that gate.
