Living and working in Ingolstadt

VISIBLE A sign of qualify, competent service and low prices even from a distance: Media Markt and Saturn, Germany and Europe’s Number One consumer electronics retailers.

We are brands. ANYONE LOOKING FOR COMPETENT SERVICE, A LARGE SELECTION OF ELECTRICAL DEVICES AND APPLIANCES and top-notch quality in a large number of European countries often ask themselves only one question: Media Markt or Saturn? One of the reasons for us being well known is our advertising. Another is that we keep the promises we make. That is what the Media Markt and Saturn brands represent.

Our concept for success pays off Both retail brands offer attractive prices, excellent service and a large selection of products – be it flat-screen TVs, coffee machines or digital cameras. But there are nevertheless differences between Media Markt and Saturn. Differences that have been strategically planned and ensure healthy competition between the two brands. The consumer profits from this competition. It is well worth their while comparing both product and price every time they want to make a purchase as this ensures that they will always be getting the best deal.

When what later became the Media-Saturn Group acquired the Saturn stores in 1990 and 1993, it laid down the foundation for this dual retail brand strategy. Since then, Media Markt and Saturn have been expanding continually, becoming the leading consumer electronics retailers in Europe. Together, they have over 850 stores in 17 European and Asian countries.

We are Germany. GERMANY IS WHERE WE HAVE OUR ROOTS, Europe is where we feel at home. With two strong brands, Media-Saturn has written a success story that is owed in part to our location. Right in the middle, where East meets West, old Europe and the Europe of today encounter each other in Germany, tradition combines with innovation. Just as Germany is one of Europe’s driving forces politically and economically, Media-Saturn is a driving force in the retail trade – both within Germany’s borders and beyond.

At home in Europe Germany is not only at the center of things geographically. As a founding member of institutions such as the European Union and the G8, Germany acts as the mainspring of a borderless and peaceful Europe. Its eventful and moving history makes Germany one of the driving forces behind a united Europe. Today Germany, one of the EU’s most populous countries, is more an integral part of the European family than at any other time in its history.

Economic driver and think tank “Made in Germany“: Worldwide, this brand stands for German inventions and products such as, for example, the light bulb, chip card, computer, MP3 format and liquid crystal display (LCD). As a mark of quality, it plays an important role in making Germany, the “country of ideas”, into a leading export nation. The world’s third largest economy is also well equipped for the future. Small and medium-sized companies in particular are making a significant contribution to technological progress and are pointing the way to the future in many branches of industry.

WORLD HERITAGE SITES IN GERMANY Almost no other country can boast of as many unique natural and cultural heritage sites as Germany. UNESCO has placed 33 of these sites under protection as World Heritage Sites of “extraordinary universal value” to mankind.

We are Bavaria. And we are proud of it! Bavaria, with its mountains and lakes, can look back on a history that spans approximately 1,500 years, and it has a lot to offer. People from around the world are well aware of this fact. No other federal state in Germany attracts as many visitors as Bavaria. Oktoberfest, the Alps, carefully cultivated traditions – abroad, “typically German” often translates into “typically Bavarian”.

We stand for economic success and progress

Welcome home

Bavaria, with its rich cultural heritage, has more to offer than just “weißwurst” (veal sausage), beer and “schuhplattler” (Bavarian folk dancers). In Bavaria, tradition and the future go hand in hand. As a hotbed of creative thinking and a leading center for technological innovation, Bavaria’s economy is thriving. In addition to other world brands, it is also home to Media-Saturn. People from all over the world live and work in this federal state. To ensure that things stay the way they are, Bavaria is investing in the future. Spending on research and education lie far above the average for the rest of the federal states.

Speaking of home: Living in Bavaria means enjoying a high quality of life. An intact social welfare and public health system as well as an extremely high level of employment speak for themselves. The fact that life is good in Bavaria is also due to the Bavarian mentality. Tolerance and a cosmopolitan mindset make this corner of the world a very special place. The excellent educational system and first-rate day care facilities also make Bavaria a big hit with families with children. Bavaria is a wonderful place to live. Welcome to Bavaria, welcome home!

SINGING BAVARIA’S PRAISES In Bavaria, culture is written with a capital “C”. Bavaria attracts around 20 million visitors a year with its more than one thousand museums and collections. Every year, opera enthusiasts from around the world go on a pilgrimage to the Bayreuth Festival on the Green Hill, and Neuschwanstein Castle enchants both young and old.

We are Ingolstadt. THE CITY ON THE DANUBE, just an hour’s drive from Munich and Nuremburg and situated at the edge of the Franconian Alb, is a real shooting star: Germany’s youngest major city is more popular than ever. No wonder, with all that this 1,200-year-old Bavarian fortress city has to offer. One thing is clear: everyone will feel at home here.

Ingolstadt is IN

An eventful past – a meaningful present

The times in which Ingolstadt had the reputation of being something of a wallflower are long over. Could it be because, as a university town, Ingolstadt has cast its spell over young people in particular and boasts a lively pub scene and a beautiful old city center? Does Ingolstadt perhaps owe its change of fortunes to the nearby Alps with their attractive winter sports areas? Is it the numerous parks and forests that make Ingolstadt so irresistible? Or is it the approximately 500 performances held during the theater season or the city’s celebrated jazz festival? We don’t know. We only know one thing: Ingolstadt is a great place to live.

Ingolstadt’s ascent started early. No less a person than Charlemagne was responsible for the first documented mention of Ingolstadt. This mention was made when he divided his empire among his sons and thus helped endow the city on the Danube with importance as a strategic location. Ingolstadt can also look back on a long history with regard to education. The first university in Bavaria was founded in 1472 in Ingolstadt, and the city is currently home to approximately 3,000 students. The University of Applied Sciences Ingolstadt regularly ranks among Germany’s top universities – and not without reason. The university is characterized by close cooperation between the academic world and the business world. In cooperation with the Media-Saturn Group, it offers dual programs of study that focus on retail management and business information technology.

Green, greener — Ingolstadt

A true high flyer

Ingolstadt is one of Bavaria’s greenest cities and its extensive recreational areas offer anyone wanting to rest and relax in the lap of Mother Nature a high quality of living. The so-called glacis – what used to be the fortyfied belt – today serves as the city’s green lung. The Danube’s floodplain meadows are of particular ecological significance since they rank among Central Europe’s most important river landscapes due to the extensive alluvial forest and rich diversity of species. Parks and nearby quarry ponds neatly round off Ingolstadt’s ecological profile. Those who like to exercise in the open air will get their money’s worth in the region around Ingolstadt. Climbing enthusiasts, for example, can head to the nearby Altmühltal valley. Those who like to ski or snowboard can be in the mountains in less than two hours.

Word that life here is good has got around. More and more people are moving to Ingolstadt. In addition to the city’s cosmopolitan flair, one reason for this is also the fact that Ingolstadt is one of Germany’s most economically strong regions. A number of different studies document this fact. For example, the Prognos Zukunftsatlas 2010 (a study relating to economic potential and sustainability) ranked Ingolstadt sixth among a total of 412 districts and cities surveyed. In November 2010, the unemployment rate was just 2.4 percent – compared with the national average of 7 percent. The quality of life and work is high. It is no coincidence that major brands have their headquarters here. MediaSaturn is in good company.

HORROR STORIES FROM INGOLSTADT One of literature’s most famous monsters has close ties to Ingolstadt. In Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”, Victor Frankenstein took up his studies at the university in Ingolstadt, where he brought his renowned “creature” to life.

CUSTOMER STAMPEDE IN CHINA Crowds gathered for the opening of our first Media Markt store in China, located in the center of Shanghai on Huai Hai Road, one of the city’s most famous shopping streets. On five floors, the technology expert offers everything the Chinese consumer could want – from entertainment media to mobile communications to household appliances. By 2012, Media-Saturn plans on opening a number of consumer electronics stores in Shanghai.

We are the future. WE HAVE BIG PLANS — and we are well on our way to realizing them. The right strategy, the courage to be innovative and a high level of product and service quality have made Media Markt and Saturn Europe’s number one consumer electronics retailers.

On the road to international success

An ambitious goal?

All signs point to growth. Over 2,000 people from more than 50 nations are currently employed at our international headquarters in Ingolstadt. Media-Saturn is subject to continuous and dynamic growth, be it in Germany, Poland, Portugal, Russia or Turkey. Today Media Markt and Saturn stores can be found at over 850 locations worldwide. Over half of our sales volume is already generated outside of Germany. In every country in which we operate, Media-Saturn has just one goal: to be Number One.

Yes, but a realistic one, as the company’s history neatly illustrates. Therefore we will continue in the future to rely on our four key principles. Our clear dual brand strategy creates competition, both internally and externally, and motivates employees to do their very best. The stores’ decentralized organizational structure ensures that the range of products offered and pricing reflect the needs of local customers. Our courage to be innovative will continue to make us trendsetters in the industry, be it as the result of eye-catching advertising concepts or the way we design our stores. And, last but not least, we will continue to invest in the personal and professional development of our staff. After all, it is primarily our competent and highly-motivated employees who we have to thank for our success.

We are what we are. WE WANT TO GROW! Over 2,000 employees live and work in Ingolstadt today – and we are looking for more people who, like us, are looking to the future. We offer school leavers, university graduates and professionals – be it in Germany, Europe or Asia – interesting jobs comprising a variety of different tasks and great opportunities for an international career.

The potential of our employees Today a new Media Markt store in Poland, tomorrow the opening of a Saturn store in southern Turkey. Our corporate group is constantly in the process of developing and expanding. In order to meet the needs of our customers and the market, we are pressing forward with new projects such as our own exclusive brands and online business. To do this, we rely on short decision-making processes, flat hierarchies and committed teams, which are to a great extent autonomous and have plenty of scope to help shape our future. Professional competence is the most important foundation for our success. It is therefore important to us that we identify the potential offered by our employees. Personnel development is

one of our highest priorities – designing training plans, creating individualized concepts for starting a new job or developing personal and professional perspectives. An important part of our human resources concept is also further training. Together with our employees, we develop qualification programs, which range from Microsoft Office training to management seminars to language courses, according to the principle of “lifelong learning”. Learning takes place on an e-learning platform and in a wide range of in-house training courses. Together we can make a real difference. After all, we want to be more than just competitive, we want to be one step ahead.

Every year, we train over 3,000 young people as salespersons and sales specialists in the retail industry – a figure that lies well above the industry average. In cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Ingolstadt, Media-Saturn offers practice-oriented programs of study; special trainee programs for career entry are available to university graduates.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT Media-Saturn offers interesting jobs and a variety of career paths for trained professionals who are enthusiastic about the retail trade and want to get ahead.

Long-term thinking is worthwhile We think about tomorrow and want our employees to enjoy working for us and to stay with us for as long as possible. That is not only in the best interest of the company but is also well worthwhile for our employees. The remuneration system is fair, gives due consideration to an employee’s personal performance and offers additional contributions to a company-related retirement scheme and contributions to capital formation.

Combining work and family The company Media-Saturn is only as good as the people who work for it. Therefore an important part of our corporate philosophy is ensuring the further development and well-being of our employees. For example, by helping them achieve a healthy balance between their career and their family. We offer fathers and mothers flexible working hours, financial subsidies as well as a bonus paid when an employee has a child or gets married. This family-friendly human resources concept was certified in June at company

headquarters in Ingolstadt within the framework of the Work and Family initiative created by the non-profit Hertie Foundation. Another example of how we help promote the well-being of our employees is the company’s own health initiative. On the one hand, our “Stay Fit” program provides employees with motivation in the form of different activities and sporting events. We organize running groups, membership in a fitness studio or participation in Ingolstadt’s half-marathon. On the other hand, our health project in the canteen “INJoy” provides for a balanced diet every day of the working week with its healthy buffet and other culinary delights.
