An Evening In Egypt – A Gait Lab Gala Requesting Your Support

Dear Bokhara Court No. 22 Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America is currently fundraising to assist in the purchase of a Gait Lab for our new Montreal Shriners Hospital, which opens in 2016. The cost of this Gait Lab is approximately 1 million dollars. Children afflicted with burn and orthopaedic conditions are treated free of charge at Shriners Hospitals. Each and every child with any type of walking disorder who attends our new hospital for treatment will benefit from this Gait Lab. Enclosed is information on the Gait Lab as well as on the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America Inc. Bokhara Court is hosting a fabulous Evening In Egypt – A Gait Lab Gala on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Rameses Shrine Centre (3100 Keele Street, Toronto), featuring fabulous décor, a great dinner, live and silent auctions and so much more! This will be a night to remember! The dedicated group of women who are the organizers of An Evening In Egypt – A Gait Lab Gala have a vision and a goal: This is to support the Montreal Shriners Hospital in raising much needed funds for the purchase of a Gait Lab. We are asking you to help us so that we may help those who need assistance. Presently we are seeking donations and/or sponsors to support our fundraising efforts. We hope that this information package provides the information needed so that you may become a sponsor, donate items to the live and silent auctions or perhaps buy a group of tickets to attend this one of a kind event. Please note that Bokhara Court No. 22 does not have a charitable number. We appreciate your support – Sincerely, Marion Searle Gala Co-Chair

Motion Analysis Laboratory or Gait Lab Currently, across the Shriners Hospitals for Children, there are thirteen (13) hospitals that have a motion analysis laboratory. This technology allows physicians to accurately define children gait patterns and the amount of energy they utilise during ambulation. This tool becomes very useful when children have limb deformities and or neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy. As surgeons, we can transfer muscles and straighten limbs. However, the real question which we must ask: Will these procedures allow the child to be more efficient walkers and improve their function. Motion analysis lab gives us insight into which child will do well with specific surgeries. In addition, these motion analysis laboratories provide a great opportunity to initiate research on functional outcomes of a multitude of treatments. From the impact of pamidronate (the medication given to children with osteogenesis imperfecta or brittle bone disease) to rehab programs on function to mention a few. SHC-Canada does not have this technology at present due to a lack of space; however we have assigned space and resources to have this technology in the design of our new hospital on the Glen Campus. The technology used in a motion analysis laboratory relies on the ability to identify in space where the children’s limb are located, at which speed they are moving, and in which direction they are moving all coupled with which muscles are being fired during gait. All of this data is captured with the help of 10 motion cameras, 2 to 4 force platforms, an electromyography measurement system, video recording equipment as well as some other assorted hardware, e.g. computers, and software items at an estimated cost in 2005 dollars of $325,000. In addition, one can capture foot plantar pressures (pedobarograph) and metabolic energy. Specifics: The video system (e.g., Motion Analysis Corp) used to describe movement (i.e., kinematics) will be the heart of the laboratory. Patients will visit the laboratory and have surface markers placed on different segments of their body. During gait 3 markers each are generally placed on the feet, legs, thighs, and trunk. The video cameras capture the images of these surface markers during the movement and the information is stored on a computer. The EMG system, an abbreviation for electromyography, is used to study muscle function through the inquiry of the electrical signal the muscle emanates while the Force Platforms measure the forces (e.g., vertical, anterior-posterior, medial-lateral) that a person applies to the ground during the gait cycle. The data can be used to compare a right step with a left, affected side with unaffected side, or with able-bodied. In addition, the force data can be integrated with the video data to produce joint (e.g., knee joint) movements as a function of the gait cycle. Finally, the Pressure Platform and Insoles are devices which measure the pressure (force/unit area) between 2 bodies (e.g., shoe with floor). For example, a patient can walk over a pressure plate and have the pressure distribution as a function of the gait cycle be recorded. He/she can also place a pressure insole in his/her shoe and similar information can be recorded. As above, various comparisons are possible. In summary, the Gait Lab provides a better understanding of how children with disabilities move, how their movements are different from children without disabilities, how surgeries and other procedures or interventions affect their function, and how to improve their movements to make them more functional and better able to participate in life. Patients with Cerebral Palsy, Myelodysplasia, Clubfoot, Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, Congenital and Acquired Lower Extremity Amputees, Spinal Cord Injuries, Thoracic Insufficiency Syndrome will directly benefit from this technology.
