Lake Maggiore Info pack

YOUR ARRIVAL Your arrival at Milan Malpensa Airport Once you've collected your luggage you’ll find us waiting for you in our blue Thomson uniforms. Please let us know if you’re having any baggage problems, or if you need any special assistance, so we can help. We'll tell you where to find your coach or taxi for your transfer to Lake Maggiore. There may be customers arriving from other flights on your transfer, so we'll do our best to keep you informed of any waiting time before your vehicle leaves for resort.

Transfer to Lake Maggiore Generally, the transfer from Milan Malpensa airport to Lake Maggiore takes around 1 hr and 15 minutes. Sometimes you may have to wait for a short while at the airport for additional flights to land. Please be aware there may not always be a Holiday Advisor accompanying you on your transfer. Just so you know, sometimes our transfer vehicles can’t make it right to the door of your accommodation, so there might be a short walk or, you may have to possibly carry your luggage to get to the entrance of your accommodation. If you've booked car hire prior to your departure please contact a Thomson Holiday Advisor at the airport - they'll be able to direct you to the car hire office. If this is something you have arranged independently, that we may not be aware of, please let us know so that we are not expecting or waiting for you on the transfer. If you’re arriving into resort by car or train, you’ll find an Information Pack waiting for you at your accommodation reception. This is full of helpful information and will also tell you where and when your Thomson Holiday Advisor will be arranging to meet you.

Check in and Local Tourist Tax When checking-in to your hotel you will need to present your passports to the reception staff, these will then be returned to you after a short while. If you haven't had them returned to you, just ask the reception staff. In Italy a tourist tax is chargeable per person-per night. It is set by the local council and based on the official star rating of the hotel. This is generally around €1 - €2 per person-per night and will be charged at the end of your stay. Many hotels only accept this payment in cash, so make sure you check with your reception on check-in. If you have any specific dietary requirements, make sure you inform your reception when checking in. They may ask you to introduce yourself to the dining room staff at your first meal so that they know who you are as well. You can also inform us in advance by using the contact details http://infopack.thomsonlakes.co.uk/lakemaggiore/digest/

Homeward bound Your departure details will normally be delivered to you at least two days before you head home. If you miss our visit the details will be left at reception or posted through your door. If you will be leaving before 7.30am, speak to us for information on how to arrange an early breakfast; and don't forget to settle your room bill the night before departing. Please remember that if you have purchased any wine, olive oil or other liquids over 100ml, these must be packed inside your main luggage, as you will not be allowed to take these in your hand-luggage through security at the airport. Should you require any help, medical or wheelchair assistance at the airport then please advise us as soon as possible during your stay so we can arrange this for you; often we need to give the airport 36 hours notice to arrange wheelchair assistance. On your return transfer to the airport you will be handed a feedback form. This is your chance to give us your opinion of all aspects of your holiday, from the hotel and resort, to the Thomson Lakes & Mountains in-resort service. If you would prefer to fill it in before you depart, just let us know, and we will deliver a feedback form to your hotel and you can give it back to us later. We pride ourselves on the service we offer to you both in-resort, and before you travel. We always hope you will be able to tick the "Very Good" box on the feedback form; however, please let us know of any issues during your stay, because if we don't know about it - we can't do anything about it. We look at all of the feedback forms that are handed back, and constantly strive to improve all areas of our service. We appreciate all your comments about the excursions you may have been on, the hotel that you have stayed in, the service we have provided to you, and read all the comments that we receive about various aspects of your holiday. Don't forget that all the questionnaires handed back will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a holiday in Bardolino on Lake Garda next year, so don't forget to give it back to us.

At Milan Malpensa Airport During the return transfer we'll tell you about the flight details, any delays that may have occurred and the location of any airport amenities you may require. Please be aware that we may not be able to accompany you to the airport, but we will give you any information you need before leaving. Because all of our flight originate and terminate within the European Economic Agreement (EEA) there may not be any duty free sales on board the aircraft. If you wish to make any purchases of perfumes, alcohol or cigarettes, make sure you do this in the airport before you board the aircraft. Terminal 1 in Malpensa is very large and can involve a long walk to the check-in desks and through security, so if you need assistance please let us know. GETTING AROUND Here are some basics to help you get around Lake Maggiore and the surrounding area.

Buses The local bus services run through Meina, Stresa and Baveno, and run between the towns of Arona in the south and Intra (Verbania) across the bay from Stresa. From Stresa there are also services running as far as the village of Gignese and to the town of Omegna.  If you want to go further afield then there are more services available from Intra or Arona.  For the timetables, go to http://safduemila.com/, but please note this website is in Italian only. Feel free to come and see us for more information. The bus service on Lake Maggiore is fairly regular, but can often be delayed with traffic issues so don't worry if it is not exactly on time. Please note that on Sundays and bank holidays the service is very limited. Tickets are purchased directly from the driver when you board the bus and there is no return ticket available, so just buy two singles.  The bus drivers do prefer do have the exact fare where possible so keep some change handy.

Ferries There is an excellent ferry service on Lake Maggiore, stopping at the Borromean Islands and many of the towns and villages around the edge of the lake.  For further information, timetables and fares you can go to http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/m_illago.html.  We will have a copy of the ferry timetable available for you and we'll give you some suggestions of places to visit during your stay. The ferries offer a good value way of seeing the local area, but the further you go, the more expensive the tickets will be. Go to the website or come and see us in your hotel for full details of fares and times. If you are over the age of 65 make sure you have some ID with you as you will be entitled to a discount (Monday-Friday only) on your ferry tickets. Make sure you buy your ferry tickets before you board the boat or you will be liable for a penalty surcharge on each ticket. This does not apply if you have boarded the ferry at an unmanned stop. The fast services (Servizio Rapido) offer a more exhilarating ride around the lake, but do carry a surcharge on top of the normal ticket price.  These services are printed in red on the timetable. The timetable itself can be difficult to read as it is quite large, but come and see us for more info and to help understand the timetable or plan your journey. From Meina the ferry only runs during high season (1.6.16 to 18.9.16).

Trains There are train services in many of the towns and villages around the lake.  You will find railway stations in Baveno, Meina and Stresa.  Please see the 'Your Resort' section for details of where they are located. The local train service in the area is operated by Trenord and you can find information on their website http://www.trenord.it/en/timetable/timetable.aspx.  There is also an intercity service from Stresa and you can find further information at http://www.trenitalia.com/. http://infopack.thomsonlakes.co.uk/lakemaggiore/digest/

One thing that many people want to do whilst they're here is the Lake Maggiore Express (http://www.lagomaggioreexpress.eu/).  This combines the train to Domodossola, followed by a beautiful journey through the Centovalli (100 Valleys) to Locarno before returning back on the ferries.  Tickets for this day out must be purchased in advance from the local travel agents or ferry stations. For more info see the 'Things To Do' section of this info pack. Train tickets can be bought from many of the local travel agents such as Tomassucci Viaggi in Stresa or Verbano Viaggi in Baveno.  You can also purchase tickets from automatic ticket machines in Baveno and Stresa or at the manned ticket office in Stresa.  Make sure that you validate your ticket in the yellow boxes on the platform before you travel. If you have been unable to purchase your tickets in advance, it is also possible to buy them from the conductor on the train. Be aware that they do not accept credit cards, so make sure you have cash to pay for your tickets.

Noddy Train For a different way of getting around, head to Stresa for the little Noddy Train running between the Lido and the Villa Pallavicino.  This offers a great way of seeing the town of Stresa and you can combine this with your Villa Pallavicino entry ticket for a discount.  There is also a Noddy Train in Arona to take you up to the Rocca Borromeo and the Colossus of San Carlo.  See the 'Things To Do' section for more info.

Boat Hire To travel around the lake in style why not hire a boat for the day? Boat hire is available from Stresa, Belgirate and Baveno and a full day costs around €250.  Motor boats can be hired without a licence as long as the engine is less than 40hp.  Please come and see us for more info.

Car Hire Local car hire is available in Stresa through Avis.  You will find them in the Ford garage between the Hotel Flora and the Grand Hotel Bristol. For more information, or to book go to http://www.avisautonoleggio.it/Autonoleggio/Europa/Italia/Stresa. Please note that the car hire has to be booked on line, but you can come and see us for assistance in arranging this.

Bike Hire Cycling is a popular and leisurely way to explore some of the areas a little further from the lake. Go to www.stresabike.com for some ideas of routes.  They can also arrange bike hire with no specialist equipment required. If you're not sure, get in touch with us for further information or contact them directly on 0039 349 787 6818.

Out and about The tap water in your hotel is perfectly drinkable, although you may notice a difference compared to your water at home. Cheap bottled water is widely available in the local supermarkets Many of the supermarkets have fresh fruit available, but often they will select the produce for you When looking for places to eat, don't forget that there can be a cover charge (coperto), or a service charge (servizio) added to your bill. These will always be displayed on the menu outside the restaurant so you can check it out before you go in Restaurants on the lake-front can often be more aimed at tourists, and more expensive head into the back-streets of the towns for some more local eateries Your Holiday Advisor will give you tried and tested suggestions of places to eat around the area, so go and see them for some great local suggestions Local specialities such as Mussiltini (a lake fish often served with pasta), Persico (perch often served with rice) and other lake fish can be found in many of the restaurants of the area, and are a delicious treat after a day exploring the area Try the local meats and cheeses such as Bresaola, salami piccante (spicy salami) and the Toma cheese in many of the shops around Lake Maggiore

Italian Customs In Italy you will often find that the shops are closed in the middle of the day for the siesta between 12.30pm and 3pm. Many shops also have a day off during the week so watch out for these Many museums in the area are closed on Mondays, so please see us for specific information on your chosen museum for more info The local markets are great for grabbing a bargain, but don't forget to haggle the price down a little bit too Many Europeans will leave a tip after a coffee and round the price up to the nearest whole euro. In restaurants people http://infopack.thomsonlakes.co.uk/lakemaggiore/digest/

often leave around 10% of the bill as a tip, and don't forget

whole euro. In restaurants people often leave around 10% of the bill as a tip, and don't forget to show your appreciation to the coach drivers and guides after an excursion The aperitivo buffets in many Italian cafés and bars are a great way of getting a little snack. Many places will give you a plate with olives, meats & cheeses, or crisps with a glass of wine or beer during the late afternoon Public toilets can be difficult to find and different to what you may be used to, and often cost up to €1 to use. Why not pop into a local café, grab a quick drink and use the facilities in there, as they are easier to find
