KOLPING WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

2016

Dear Kolping sisters and brothers all over the world, This October is the 25th anniversary of the beatification of our father of the journeymen Adolph Kolping. With great joy and thankfulness we remember this unique event that back then made many thousands of Kolping sisters and brothers travel to St. Peter’s Square in Rome to attend the beatification in person. Many other members of the Kolping Society in the whole world have accompanied this great event through prayers, church services, pilgrimages and the like in their Kolping Families, Diocesan, Regional and National Associations. People are reporting me from many sides that on the occasion of the “Silver Jubilee” of the beatification, church services, pilgrimages and festivities and many other events are planned all over the world. Please document these events thoroughly with as many photos as possible and send this material to Cologne. We want to collect it here in order to compile a broad worldwide documentation for the internet. I am already looking forward to receiving many reports, photos and videos from all over the world. Kind regards from Cologne.

The Philippines

The Philippines. The Philippines is an archipelago bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the west Philippine Sea to the west, the Bashi Channel to the north, the Sulu and the Celebes Seas to the south. You can find us East of Vietnam, North of Indonesia. The country is divided into the geographical areas of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Its capital, the City of Manila, is in Luzon. You can also enter through the cities of Cebu in the Visayas, and Davao in Mindanao. We are made up of 7,107 islands. Big. Small. Sandy. Sunny. Relaxing. Exotic. Beautiful. Our Beautiful Abode. Our islands are hotbeds of life, with approximately 12,000 plant species, 1,100 land vertebrate species and at least 400 coral species. And more are being discovered. We’re just shy of being 2,000 kilometers long from the tip of Luzon to the toe of Mindanao, but we are host to a lot of ‘mosts’. The island with the most volcanoes per square kilometer. The most mangrove species in the world. The most bio-diverse reef system. We have extensive mountain ranges to hike through, underwater landscapes to dive in, flat plains to drive across, cave systems to explore, waterfalls, rock faces, rivers, lakes – and, of course, a very rich culture and tradition.

The Economy of the Philippines is the 39th largest in the world, according to 2015 International Monetary Fund statistics, and is also one of the emerging markets. The Philippines is considered a newly industrialized country, which has an economy transitioning from one based on agriculture to one based more on services and manufacturing. In 2016, GDP by Purchasing power parity was estimated to be at $811.726 billion. Primary exports include semiconductors and electronic products, transport equipment, garments, copper products, petroleum products, coconut oil, and fruits. The Philippines has been named as one of the Tiger Cub Economies. It is currently one of Asia's fastest growing economies.

Tourism is an important sector for the Philippine economy, contributing 7.8% to the Philippine gross domestic product (GDP) in 2014. The tourism industry employed 3.8 million Filipinos, or 10.2 % of national employment in 2011. In a greater thrust by the Aquino administration to pump billion to employ 7.4 million people by 2016, or about 18.8 % of the total workforce, contributing 8% to 9% to the nation's GDP. However, major problems remain, mainly having to do with alleviating the wide income and growth disparities between the country's different regions and socioeconomic classes, reducing corruption, and investing in the infrastructure necessary to ensure future growth. Bicol. Specifically, we want to bring you to the home of Kolping in the Philippines – Bicol. The Bicol Region or Region V, also known as Bicolandia, is one of the 17 regions of the Philippines. Bicol (also spelled Bikol) is composed of four provinces in the Bicol Peninsula, the southeastern end of Luzon Island namely Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay and Sorsogon and two islandprovinces adjacent to the peninsula namely Catanduanes and Masbate. Its regional center is Legazpi City in Albay province.

Bicol is one of the Philippines’ best-known tourist destinations. Some of its more famous treasures are the following: the gentle “butanding” (whale sharks) of Donsol in Sorsogon which is considered as the biggest fish in the world, the smallest edible fish in the world “Sinarapan” which can be found in Buhi Lake in Camarines Sur, the fierce and fiery Mayon Volcano and Bulusan Volcano, and the popular Camarines Sur Watersports Complex (CWC). Bicol locals are an interesting mix of laid back and outspoken. They enjoy holding colorful water parades, are proud of their centuries-old stone churches, and will fire up your palate with their delicious spicy specialties.

The Other Side. Amidst all these beauties that the Philippines and the Bicol Region have to offer, it is still undeniable that a lot of social and economic problems linger in and haunt the lives of millions of Filipinos. Instances of poverty incidence are very high. Many resources are not being maximized well and most of the times, used in wrong ways. This is an obvious irony: Philippines is a rich country, however, opportunities still lack for Filipinos. Major problems mainly having to do with alleviating the wide income and growth disparities between the country's different regions and socioeconomic classes, reducing corruption, and investing in the infrastructure necessary to ensure future growth still remains. With these current problems that the Philippines encounters, hope kindles with the presence of Kolping Society. Kolping Society Philippines, Inc.

KOLPING WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

2016

KOLPING IS GOD’S MERCY The World Kolping Day of Prayer is different from the past celebrations. This year’s celebration is within the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. The Kolping Society of the Philippines focuses its prayer and reflection on God’s mercy so concrete within the Kolping family. It has for its theme; KOLPING is GOD’S MERCY. The Kolping Society of the Philippines has realized that God in his loving mercy has specifically called the simple ordinary man, Adolph Kolping, now Blessed, to be a priest to spread His mercy to the world through a kind of spirituality suited for all the sectors of the Church and for all times especially for the youth, the poor and those who need most His mercy. The Kolping Society of the Philippines, existing in a developing country yet known as the only Christian country in Asia with young and poor citizens, relies so much in God’s mercy channelled through merciful people. For this solemn occasion, The World Kolping Day of Prayer, the KSPI raises its heart to praise and thank God for His unbounded mercy, we send our humble supplication to the Almighty to include Blessed Adolph Kolping among His known saints, we pray for all the members of the International Kolping Society and its collaborators and with contrite hearts, we the members of the KSPI pray for mercy for the sinfulness for our members and those who left the family, that we ourselves become “merciful as our heavenly Father is merciful.” In preparation for October 27, THE KOLPING WORLD DAY OF PRAYER, THE KSPI shall have a TRIDUUM (3) days of prayer by the respective Kolping Family in their own parish or chapel with their own praeses on October 24, 25 and 26. The First day shall be a day with Blessed Adolph Kolping, the second day shall be a Day of Blessings and the third day shall be Reconciliation Day. On this third day, since we are in the Year of Mercy, it is most fitting to seek God’s mercy and reconciliation with God and one another. On October 26, the day before the Kolping World Day of Prayer, the KF of the KSP together with their praeses have a PENITENTIAL SERVICE in their own parish church, chapel or a place they have chosen for the celebration. This is my humble prayer and request to all kspi members that we follow these spiritual exercises. May the mercy of God be upon you all. May you in turn be channels of God’s mercy.

THE LITURGY OF THE KOLPING WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FIRST DAY, OCTOBER 24 A DAY WITH BLESSED ADOLPH KOLPING During this day, the members of each of the KF shall gather on an appointed time for an hour and a half to two hours. They shall together read-review/ read meditatively the life and works of Blessed Adolph Kolping. (Life and works of Blessed Adolph Kolping shall be provided to all Kolping Families.) After the re-reading, they shall have a group sharing answering the follow questions:

What do I like most in Blessed Adolph Kolping? Are his works worth imitating? Are his teachings relevant to our life and situation today? How does it affect my life? Spontaneous prayer of thanksgiving or petitions

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father…

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF BLESSED ADOLPH KOLPING You gave us Blessed Adolph Kolping as an intercessor and role model. His life found fulfilment in his concern for the young people in religious and social difficulties. For many he was an untiring pastor, a fatherly advisor, a patient teacher and a true friend. He set us an example in his love for your Son. In his loyalty to the Church he is an exemplary role model for us. His concern was to understand work, family and society in the light of our faith. He considered helping one another within the community to be the expression of the Christian love for one's neighbor. From the Holy Scripture, the sacraments and prayer he drew the strength to create a movement that is to serve You and mankind. At all times you have called us to help establish your kingdom. We therefore beseech you: help us work together to overcome poverty, injustice and hopelessness. Through the intercession of Blessed Adolph Kolping, help us to defend human life and protect marriage and family. As members of the International Kolping Society in the community of your Church let us be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Fulfil our hope of being able to honor Adolph Kolping as a Saint throughout the whole church in all languages and nations. Let us, through faith, hope and love, work towards bringing your kingdom in this world, just as Adolph Kolping did. This we ask of You, through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

2016

SECOND DAY, OCTOBER 25 KSPI: BENEFICIARIES OF GOD’S MERCY As on the First Day, the KF members gather in a place on appointed time and reflect on the mercies/favors received since they became members of the KSP. Not everyone is consciously aware that we live by God’s mercy but we know it. Every time we are asked or greeted: how are you? Our usual reply is, by the mercy of God I am fine, by God’s mercy my children are in the school, our project profited, our products were sold and taken, I am healed of my sickness. This is a humble recognition that it is only by God’s mercy that we exist and live. And this is true. St Paul in his letter to the Romans says that the consequence of sin is death. We sinned many times but are very much alive today. It is because of God’s Mercy. Surely, we remember how we got into the Kolping Family, some got in on their own, some were invited by a friend, some out of curiosity, some because of needs or need to work, and etc. All these are because of God’s love and mercy. We can also recall the good we got through Kolping, a good moral life, potentials developed, new knowledge acquired, livelihood enhanced and grew, business grew and expanded, people helped us in our efforts to grow and mature. All these are agents of God to extend to us His mercy. Through the Kolping activities and programs, God’s mercy reached us and is continuously benefiting the KF. Let us acknowledge those acts of mercy and the merciful people. Silent Recollection of goods received through the membership in the Kolping Family.

Since I became a member of the KSP, what were the blessings that I have received through it? How did it help me? Did it influence my life, my attitude? Did it give me and my family better vision of life? How much do I appreciate them? Am I grateful for these blessings? Each member of the Family shares the good he received; material goods, learning, discoveries, effect in the family, etc. to the group.

THANKSGIVING PRAYER Almighty God and Father, We praise and thank you for the gift of life to us all. We thank more for sustaining us since then and now. We acknowledge gratefully, too, the talents you shared with us. You called us to be members of the Kolping Society in order for us to live a quality life fitting to us as your children. We are reaping and enjoying its fruits. As we thank you for all this, we humbly ask you to bring to completion the good you have begun Kolping Society Philippines, Inc.

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

All:

Amen

Praeses:

The Lord be with you

All:

And with your spirit

Praeses:

We have come together as one family of God, living the spirit and ideals of Blessed Adolph Kolping. God is so pleased with our coming together acknowledging his Fatherhood to us. He has waited for this moment. He offers us all that He is, his love, his mercy, his forgiveness. We are so important to Him. Let us offer Him too all that we are, our persons, our time, our joys and including our sins. We are his children. It does not matter to Him if we are sinners. He loves us most. In fact, He said: “I do not want the sinner to die but to return to me and live” Certainly, we do not want to die now because of sinfulness. Let us return to Him and live our lives better to the best of it.

Let us pray: Loving Father, We your children have come together before you, sinful and sorrowful. We humbly seek your pardon and forgiveness. Reconcile us to you and to one another. Help us live our lives as you designed and planned it. Redirect us once again to the path that leads to freedom, joy and fulfilment that last. Grant us all these to us through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, in the name of Jesus our Lord. All:

Amen

Scripture Reading and exhortation A reading from the Prophet Hosea “When Israel was a child, I loved him, Out of Egypt I called my son. The more I called Israel, the further they went from me. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, who took them in my arms, but they did not know that I cared for them. I drew them with human cords, with bands of love, I fostered them like those who raise an infant to their cheeks, I bent down to feed them. My people have their mind set on apostasy. How could I give you up, Ephraim or deliver you up, Israel? My heart is overwhelmed, my pity is stirred. I will not give vent you my blazing anger. I will not destroy Ephraim again, for I am a God not a man, the Holy One present among you. I will not come in wrath.” (Hosea 11:1-9) Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God RESPONSORIAL PSALM (Ps 31:2, 6, 12-13, 15-16, 17, 25)

R: In you, O LORD, I take refuge. In you, O LORD, I take refuge; let me never be put to shame. In your justice rescue me. Into your hands I commend my spirit; you will redeem me, O LORD, O faithful God.

R: In you, O LORD, I take refuge. For all my foes I am an object of reproach, a laughingstock to my neighbors, and a dread to my friends; they who see me abroad flee from me. I am forgotten like the unremembered dead; I am like a dish that is broken.

R: In you, O LORD, I take refuge. But my trust is in you, O LORD; I say, “You are my God. In your hands is my destiny; rescue me from the clutches of my enemies and my persecutors.”

R: In you, O LORD, I take refuge.

Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your kindness. Take courage and be stouthearted, all you who hope in the LORD.

R: In you, O LORD, I take refuge. Alleluia GOSPEL A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke The tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to listen to him, but the Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, "This man welcomes sinners and eats with them." So to them he addressed this parable. "What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it? And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' I tell you, in just the same way there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance. (Luke 15:1-7) Short Exhortation Praeses:

As members of God’s people, the Church, particularly as KSP and of our Kolping Family, we have failed, we sinned, we transgressed, we turned our back against God. However, God does not stop loving us. We are sinners but remained beloved by God. Remember Jesus came for only one purpose to find and bring back the lost sheep, the lost coin, the prodigal son to God. He has come for sinners. He is among us offering his mercy and forgiveness to all of us excluding no one. God, even in our sinfulness does not cut relationship with us, His children. He maintains his loving relationship with every one of us. Today, He invites us to return to Him, to receive His mercy. Long has He waited for our coming to Him.

Short quiet moment then the praeses guides the penitents: Guided Examination of Conscience Praeses: “I am the Lord thy God. Thou shall not have any other god except me.”

“Love one another as I have loved you.”

Do I respect every person? Do I say bad words against my fellow persons? Do I judge them fairly? Do I have ill feelings or sinned against somebody? Am I willing to forgive him? Am I willing to forgive those who sinned against me? “Thou shall not steal.”

Did I take somebody’s good without permission from its owner? Did I misuse the funds? Did I pay my debts? Did I exact interest from my debtor more than what is morally and legally right? Do I help the needy especially the poor? “You are the light of the world and the salt of the earth.”

Did I bear witness to my faith both in words and deeds? Did I cause someone to sin? Did I cause trouble, scandal in the community? Did I pretend to appear to be very Christian publicly but not internally? “Be merciful as your heavenly Father is merciful.”

Did I visit my sick neighbor? Did I share food with the beggars? Do I keep for so long a time clothes and other items which I do not use while others are naked? Did I waste food while others are hungry and thirsty? Did I refuse to help, console or comfort a fellow in difficulty or in trouble? Short Silence. Praeses:

(slowly and meditatively pray the following)

Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger, abounding in mercy. He will not always accuse and nurses no lasting anger; he has not dealt with us as our sins merit, nor requited us as our wrongs deserve. For as the heavens tower over the earth, so his mercy towers over those who fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our sins from us. As a Father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him. For he knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust. (Ps 103: 8-14) Individual Sacramental Confession follows. Silence is maintained. After each one has confessed: Praeses:

We have confessed our sins. Our sins are forgiven. The cause of division is gone. We have forgiven one another. We are brothers and sisters, children of our Heavenly Father. Let us now pray the very prayer our Lord Jesus taught us:

Our Father… Let us now offer the sign of peace.

For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones and also for me, that speech may be given me to open my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador in chains, so that I may have the courage to speak as I must. Word of the Lord Responsorial Psalm Ps 144:1b, 2:9-10 R. :

Blessed be the Lord, my Rock! Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for battle, my fingers for war.

Glory to you, O Lord.

Some Pharisees came to him and said, “Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you.” He replied, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and I perform healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I accomplish my purpose. Yet I must continue on my way today, tomorrow, and the following day, for it is impossible that a prophet should die outside of Jerusalem.’ “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were unwilling! Behold, your house will be abandoned. But I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.” Priest/Deacon:

Please kneel for the

Amen.
