The city is now eastern India's centre of business, commerce and finance. Kolkata is not as old as other Indian cities, like Delhi; it's almost entirely a British creation and was the capital of British India until 1912. It is one of the major metropolitan cities of India It is the Capital of west Bengal. Long known as the cultural capital of India and home to the Bengal Renaissance, Kolkata continues to spawn generations of poets, writers and film directors

Today Karigars from the region are amongst the most preferred labour in the Indian precious industry. Around 95 per cent of the retailers in Kolkata are manufacturers of jewellery and more than 50 per cent of the manufactured jewellery is sold outside the city. The Kolkata jewellery retail market is pegged at an approximate Rs. 2,500 crores Kolkata market is the silent dragon, one of the oldest hubs of diamond trading and consumption in India. Kolkata has been renowned for its gold jewellery since centuries.
