“Life Is Its Own Journey” — Laurens Van Der Post

Hospice Care a Perfect Fit Paul Reardon, Sr. received many awards while serving his country in WWII, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, but his personal accomplishments lay in his position as the Athletic Director for Washington and Jefferson College. After returning from the war and recovering from an injury, Paul and his wife, Roma, decided to plant their family roots in Washington County. Paul’s son, Paul, Jr., his daughters Linda and Pat, his daughter-in-law Audrey, and granddaughter Legend explain that family was very important to him. Paul and Roma Reardon Although Paul had an obligation to the college and his athletes, Pat explained that Sundays were sacred. The family would religiously travel to visit their grandparents in Pittsburgh. “That was important to Dad,” Linda said. “He wanted us to have a relationship with our grandparents. Growing up we only saw Dad on Sundays. Back then the Athletic Director went to all sporting events and traveled with the teams.” Although his family came first, there is no denying that his 39year tenure at W & J defined him and his successes over the years. “My dad’s true love was swimming,” Pat said. “When his team won the PAC Championship, the trophy was placed on our mantle at home – he was so proud of that. Dad actually swam up until a few years ago. Although sports were very important to him, he strongly believed that grades came before sports. This philosophy carried on to us, his kids, and his grandkids.” Those are the values Paul and Roma wanted to instill in their kids and grandkids. Legend, 12, who was more like a daughter to them than a granddaughter, remembers her Pop and Nan very clearly. She remembers the good times when they would watch TV and eat on the couch. “Pop loved to eat chocolate,” Legend said, “and we both loved ice cream.”

Being such a close-knit family, they were all devastated when Roma became ill and then subsequently passed away six years ago. Although the situation was tragic, the family is fortunate they had Hospice Care in their parents’ home to help take care of her. After coming to terms with the situation, Paul, Jr. explained that he “suggested in-home hospice care. Dad accepted that but was upset to see her in pain.” As a nurse, Pat naturally wanted to take care of her mom; and she did for a period of time. She made sure that her mom’s appearance remained as Roma would have wanted it. “Having hospice in mom’s home gave me the opportunity in the last month of her life to be her daughter and not her care taker,” Pat said. “They had to tell me to stop being her nurse.” The family remembers Alice Teagarden, one of the hospice care staff members, going to their parents’ house the day Roma passed away to make sure they were alright. Since the Reardon family had such a positive experience with Hospice Care when they lost Roma, they knew they wanted their dad to have the same special care when he became ill and his health started to decline. The difference is that Paul took the front seat in the decision making and went to talk with Dr. Cullen, his physician. Paul told Dr. Cullen that he was once active and able to go where he pleased, but now he was confined to his house. He told Dr. Cullen that “enough was enough.” Dr. Cullen told him “whatever you want, Coach.” Once he made the decision, things happened quickly, his family recalls. “Dad went to Donnell House on a Thursday at 5 p.m., and he passed away the next Wednesday at 10 p.m.,” Paul, Jr. said. Paul, Jr., Audrey, Linda and Pat chuckled in unison when they talked about the first day they brought their dad to Donnell

Acts of Kindness

The Abundant Life Baptist Church Senior High Youth Group sang Christmas Carols to the patients at Donnell House. They also brought home made cookies from the Church Parishioners.

The Importance of Tears By Alice Teagarden, M.Ed. Counselor and Bereavement Coordinator

One of my favorite “CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE MOTHER’S SOUL” stories is the one about the mother whose young daughter was late coming home from school. Time had passed to the point that the mother didn’t know if she should be worried or angry. As the mother started to leave to look for her daughter, the 6-year-old walked through the door. The mother, relieved to see her, said, “Where have you been?” Her daughter replied, “When we were walking home, my friend’s doll broke. She was crying. I needed to help her.” The mother, pleased that her daughter was learning about being a good friend, said, “Oh, you were helping her fix her doll?” “Oh, no,” said her daughter, “it can’t be fixed. I was helping her cry.” When one works with grieving individuals, as I do, tears are expected. What strikes me though, about these tears, is that many bereaved will apologize for them. Why do we attend to the myth that tears are a sign of weakness? There has been much research on tears. In our case, we are looking at emotional tears, or tears which are caused by psychological distress. One study shows evidence that this type of tears expels toxins from our bodies. Other research suggests the belief that tears not released would find a way to be released somewhere else from one’s body, such as a headache or body pain. We do find that in our Western culture, if you ask someone if they feel better after crying, the response is typically, “Oh, yes!” Based on this alone, the next time someone chooses you to cry with, let’s take a lesson from the little girl in our story. We cannot FIX much of what happens with terminal disease and grief and bereavement. But, we can be present to help someone cry. It is a gift to them to let the tears flow. Give them your time and permission to cry and consequently, the gift of the healing process.

In conjunction with their United Way Campaign, the Observer Publishing Company encouraged each of its Departments to raise money to benefit a local charity or program during the holiday season. The Circulation Department held a “Sweet” Sale and used its proceeds to purchase portable CD players and holiday CDs for the patients at Donnell House. “We wanted to impact a program or agency we thought most people wouldn’t think of at the holidays,” Alice Bonim, from the Circulation Department, said. “I am familiar with Donnell House and Hospice Care, as were others in my department. Lori Koffler, owner of Storybook Florist, dropped off roses for the patients at Donnell House this holiday season. “Flowers have a different meaning to different people – especially when you get a bouquet for no particular reason,” Lori said. Lori took a tour of the House some time ago and was impressed with how the families are made so comfortable. She expressed how special the staff must be to be able to care for the patients and their families.

The Write Stuff Bobbie Redd writes in her journal because it is an easy way to express herself. “It is a way of healing for me,” Bobbie said. When her son, Eric Corbly, was receiving hospice care in New York, she was given a journal to write down her feelings. Because Bobbie found the process of writing to be so helpful, she donated journals to Hospice Care of The Washington Hospital to help others in her situation heal as well. Bobbie said hospice care made difficult moments in her life easier. She wants to give back to a cause that gave her so much when she needed it.

Perfect Fit continued from page 1 House. Linda said, “he asked us how much does it cost to die?” Of course, he was referring to the comfortable surroundings at Donnell House, wondering how much it would cost to stay in this nice place. “The staff at Donnell House was fantastic,” Pat said, “They took the time to make sure Dad was comfortable. Hospice Care respects life so very much. I was impressed that the staff turned him from side to side in his bed regularly to make sure he was comfortable and didn’t get bed sores.” Audrey explains that the Hospice Care staff didn’t just make sure Paul was comfortable, but they also helped the family with a healthcare situation they encountered with Paul. “The staff really went to bat for us,” she said. Linda said, “No matter day or night, the staff took care of us. They offered a blanket, a drink – whatever we needed. No questions asked, they would give Dad pain medication when he needed it. They always explained to us what was going on. Hospice gives people dignity when they die. We are blessed to have Donnell House in our community. I don’t know what we would have done without it.” Throughout Paul’s life, he fought for his country, his family, his career, and his athletes. In the end, he knew when he had no more fight in him. He was a beloved man who was well respected. It says a lot for a person when his former athletes take the time to come to his funeral. Paul was just that kind of man who had touched so many lives. “Dad was amazing,” Linda said.

More Acts of Kindness

Several years ago, The Washington Hospital Education Department staff (pictured above) decided the needs of others at Christmas were more important than buying gifts for each other. Therefore, each year members of the department share their generosity in donating a monetary gift for a good cause within the hospital family. This year, the Education Department chose the Donnell House as the gift recipient. Wall clocks for patient rooms were the gift of choice! The beautiful clocks will give the patient a sense of home in looking forward to their favorite TV show, when a special family member may be dropping by, meal time, or just simply when to expect a staff member to visit. This holiday season, in the Spirit of giving, Gerard O’Hare and Brandon Rae of Washington Medical Equipment and Jeffrey’s Drug Store and Ross Bevevino of Curtis Long Term Pharmacy made a donation to the Free Care Fund at the Donnell House. The donation is to honor those physicians who work with them to provide services to the patients of Hospice Care of The Washington Hospital.

Washington & Jefferson students donated their time to decorate three Christmas Trees at Donnell House. The following students helped with the decorations: Christopher Faulk, Noah Hayden, Sharon McCray, Christopher Lamonde, Leroy Piper, Molly Macioce and Kelly Holupka Molly and Kelly are interns at Hospice Care through the Mathew Brown Fellowship Program, a college age ministry program of the First Presbyterian Church of Washington. The program is named after the first president of W & J College and the founding minister of First Presbyterian Church. It is a faith-based project that links college students to community service positions in Washington for the academic year. These students are required to give no less than 60 hours per semester. A local Girl Scout Troop hand made blankets for the patients at Donnell House. The girls, Jessica and Amanda Cole, Emily Vasko and Katie and Emily Dehosse, gathered at the Cole’s house with the materials needed and made the blankets as a group. Kay Cole, Jessica and Amanda’s mother, explained that each meeting is headed by a different Girl Scout. Each girl has her opportunity to plan a meeting and decide what will be discussed and done. Jessica chose this activity because Kay’s mother-in-law had used Donnell House and her brother was diagnosed with cancer. They felt it was a good fit.
