Open to All - Geared Towards Teens & Young Adults. Come hear Robert H. Gillette, author of Escape to Virginia: From Nazi Germany to Thalhimer S Farm. Two Jewish teenagers flee Nazi Germany and find refuge at a farm in Burkeville, Virginia. They are able to leave Germany and start new lives in America with the help of Richmond department store magnate William Thalhimer.

Nov. 2nd, 7:00 PM at Temple Sinai Meet Paul Goldberg, a uthor of The Yid Set in Soviet Russia during the last week of Stalin’s life, The Yid is a screwball farce about atrocity, revolving around a group of rag-tag conspirators who attempt to take down a tyrant.

Feb. 5th, 2:00 PM at Temple Sinai The New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Dark Invasion, channels Erik Larson and Ben Macintyre in this riveting biography of Betty Pack, the dazzling American debutante who became an Allied spy during WWII and was hailed by OSS chief General “Wild Bill” Donovan as “the greatest unsung heroine of the war.”

Mar. 21st, 7:00 PM at the UJC Jennifer Keishin Armstrong is a former staffer at Entertainment Weekly, whose books include a history of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. In Seinfeldia: How a Show About Nothing Changed Everything, she delivers a solid history of the series, beginning with two largely unknown stand-up comedians, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David, cracking jokes in a Korean deli in 1988 and realizing: This kind of banter could be a show

Winter in the former Soviet Union. The temperature is -27 ˚ F, and snow and ice have closed the roads. Tatiana and Bronislav are elderly, disabled, and otherwise alone. But JDC-supported Hesed Center volunteer Tania is riding a borrowed horse and sleigh packed with food and supplies from Federation partner JDC for them. Tania, Hesed centers, and JDC will not leave them behind!

The former Soviet Union is home to some of the most vulnerable Jews in the world. Tens of thousands of elderly Jews in small towns dotting the region struggle to survive. During the harsh winter months, many, like Tatiana and Bronislav, live without adequate heating or even central plumbing. Tania insists the motivation behind her selfless work is Tatiana and Bronislav themselves. “Despite their condition, they do not lose heart! They amaze me with that,” she says. “I am doing everything for them as for my relatives. I do not see any difficulties in my work; how is it possible to have hardships in the work that you love?” Whether it’s here on the Peninsula or in the FSU, we are not leaving people behind. When you take part in the UJCVP Annual Campaign you are part of this story. Thank you for your generosity. STATISTICS: 60,000 vulnerable Ukrainian Jews receiving help from Hesed

D o S o m e t h i ng M e m or a bl e Thanks to the philanthropic power of our UJCVP Endowment Funds, $4500 was made available to send three community teens to transformative Jewish summer programs out of town and abroad. Individual donor-advised funds along with unrestricted Endowment resources combine to make possible what otherwise might be impossible for these future young leaders. Doing Something Memorable is as easy as leaving a bequest as your final legacy or creating your own Donor -Advised Fund in order to channel your philanthropic dollars now.

ExecutiveDirector’s Message Steven Wendell These past several months, we have been bombarded by politicians and pundits telling us how bad things are in the world. I have a sense that the negative drumbeat will continue at a high pitch at least through the election. And it would be irresponsible not to pause and note that these are unsettling times when many events scare us and may lead us to close our doors and retreat from the world. In places like France and Turkey, Ukraine and Israel, the hardships can grab more headlines than the hope. But we need to be reminded that there are many positive things that can and are happening in the world because people care and are prepared to take action to address human needs. The UJCVP, through our Annual Campaign, partners with the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to help address human crisis and need around the world. JDC’s work is a story of resilience; a story that places each of us who contribute to these efforts at the “heart of that story”. Below are some of the stories of JDC’s work this year that should make us all proud to be supporters of world Jewry. Click on the highlighted links to learn more about each program. •

Our Turkish JCCs and summer camps, with leadership from our JDC Entwine, young Jewish adult volunteers, help make Jews in Istanbul and Izmir stronger and more united. When you’re proud of your Jewish identity, you feel safer in your Jewish community.

In Israel, we strengthen the nation’s social fabric, building a future where Israelis of all stripes, from the North to the Negev, and across the political divide, know their country is rooting for them. Our work with marginalized communities — like Israelis with disabilities, the elderly, and Israeli Arabs — ensures that when the country faces crisis, no one is left behind.

JDC has partnered with the French social services agency OSE, the Israel Trauma Coalition, and with UJA-Federation of New York to launch the Resilience Center, training social workers and other support professionals to help counsel French Jewish communities in the aftermath of attacks. When communities are resilient, they are stronger, and terror no longer reigns.

Our flagship international Jewish summer camp in Szarvas, Hungary, is a Jewish oasis where thousands of kids from dozens of countries come together each year to celebrate the strength and diversity of the global Jewish community. The pride the camp fosters and the leadership these teens learn help to fuel the next generation of Jewish innovation in Europe and beyond.

And for the Jews in Ukraine still beleaguered by a protracted conflict with little chance of ending, JDC works around the clock to deliver food, medicine, clothing, and assistance finding apartments and jobs. In the darkest moments, we provide a bit of light.

Together, the UJCVP, in partnership with JDC, is doing the quiet work of helping Jewish communities around the world who, like their neighbors, are facing unprecedented challenges. JDC’s work demonstrates how, together, we can kindle hope in the face of tremendous odds. It demonstrates how we can choose hope over fear and help build a better world.

President’s Message Jody Sarfan

“By participating with other UJC members on our beautiful campus, you are helping to build an even stronger, more vibrant Jewish community on the Virginia Peninsula-all the while doing what you enjoy!” Time, we can all agree, is a hot commodity in our busy lives. We wish we had more of it, don’t want to waste it, try to spend it thoughtfully. It is common to prioritize our time so as not to lose focus of what is truly important to us. We have no problem coming up with our endless “have to” activities each day: work, carpool, meal preparation, house repairs, taking care of family, paying bills, just to name a few. It seems that one more drain on our precious time will put us on personal overtime. If something is added, something else must be sacrificed. It’s basic MATH..... ....until.....we realize that there are other activites that balance our lives, nourishing and refocusing us. Exercise helps us detox from daily stress (unfortunately, anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I can’t manage to get this fact into my head!); spending time with friends reinvigorates us; being around family grounds us; continuing to learn new things renews our self confidence; hobbies are just plain enjoyable. These activities don’t further drain us: they give our lives meaning and depth. Though it may seem an impossibility to fit more into our lives, we simply must balance the “have to’s” with the “want to’s”. WELL, HAVE I GOT GOOD NEWS FOR YOU!!! At the UJCVP, you can take care of your “want to” list with the added bonus of building community at the same time--what a bargain! Are you a senior with some free time on your hands? Come and join the Grand Club each Tuesday at 11AM for some Bingo, socializing, and a fantastic lunch. The

group has grown quite a bit, and it is common to see 10-15 people at each program. Mah jong players are invited to join the lively group of players each Tuesday at the J. Continue your learning by attending the Four Author Events sponsored by the UJCVP, Temple Sinai, and the Jewish Book Council on Sept. 11 (7PM at the UJC), Nov. 7 (7PM at Temple Sinai), Feb. 5 (2PM at Temple Sinai), and March 21 (7PM at the UJC). I am honestly in awe of the caliber of authors represented in these programs. See the front page of this newsletter for further details. Families with young children can spend some quality time together on Sept 28 at 3PM at the J for “PJ and Bees!” program, where a traditional Jewish story is read about King Solomon and, you guessed it, (see page 5 of this newsletter). There will be 3 more similar events this year so stay tuned for details. On Sunday, September 25th at 12:30PM you can join the Annual Challah Baking event with other community bakers. Learn new braiding techniques, check out different recipes, and share your tips for the best Shabbat Challah. See the back page of this newsletter for more information. BUT WAIT.......THERE’S MORE (and it’s not a Ginsu knife)! These activities do add to your quality of life, but there is an even more exciting by-product. By participating with other UJC members at our beautiful campus, you are helping to build an even stronger, more vibrant Jewish community on the Virginia Peninsula-all the while doing what you enjoy! So it’s pretty easy to supplement your “have-to’s” with your “want-to’s” by consulting the UJCPV calendar. Your participation signals your desire to foster a strong present and future for our Jewish lives here on The Peninsula.

Join hundreds of families in the Hampton Roads area receiving FREE Jewish books every month through PJ Library! PJ Library is a FREE program that sends highquality, age-appropriate Jewish books and music to families each month to children 6 months to age 8 – with absolutely no strings attached.

Have a dog that likes to swim? Bring your dog to the UJC Pool! Sunday, September 4th 7:15 - 8:15 PM $10 per dog non-UJC members* *1/2 fee will be donated to SPCA $5 suggested donation fee for UJC members RSVP to [email protected]

Next event: September 28th, 3 PM! PJ and Bees!! In this sweet retelling of a traditional Jewish tale, King Solomon and the Bee, a lowly bee unexpectedly repays the kindness of a king by helping him solve a queen’s difficult riddle. RSVP to [email protected]

There is no charge for the event, and the book will be available for sale. I never considered myself as the kind of Jew who goes to the mikveh. I always considered the mikveh a place for Jews more observant than myself and belonging to an older, more traditional form of Judaism. I attend services regularly, buy Kosher meat, lead services, read Torah, and am active in my synagogue, but I still saw the mikveh as not belonging to me. This all changed, however, a few years ago. I went to the mikveh a couple of days before getting married, and it was one of the best decisions I made about the entire weekend. After discussing different aspects of a Jewish wedding with our rabbi, and getting good advice from my mom (thanks Mom!), I decided this was a part of a Jewish wedding that I may regret not doing later in life.  I am lucky to belong to a synagogue with its own mikveh, so the logistics were easy, and in the moment, the logistics are what I focused on; arriving on time, removing all my make-up and nail polish, etc. However, the experience became about so much more than just going through the motions. It was about walking two miles from my apartment to the synagogue on a Thursday morning with two of my bridesmaids who live far away. I was able to spend quiet and meaningful time with them. It was about removing every last piece of clothing and jewelry, which often feel like a second skin. I have a great picture of my friend removing my nose ring for me, which I had not taken out in ten years. It was about creating a spiritual space for myself before moving forward into a new phase of life, and on a practical level, it was about having a few moments of peaceful quiet before days of non-stop celebration. Going to the mikveh was the perfect way for me to start my wedding and marriage, but in the end, it also was the perfect way for me to gain strength in my own religion and faith. In many ways, I felt that I was reclaiming and embracing a part of Judaism that I thought was only for a certain part of the community, a part that I thought might not always view my Judaism as correct. I make conscious choices each day to be Jewish and have a Jewish home in an ever changing and modernizing culture, and am proud to be a part of a global Jewish community wanting to change with me. The mikveh is not a part of Judaism that should be reserved for a few, but rather a space, both physical and spiritual, for any of us during life’s biggest and best moments. ~Special thanks for this personal mikveh story by Elizabeth Barnett Glidden Please support a mikveh for ALL at the UJCVP.
