Since 1847, on the order’s of Pius IX, a special canon fires blanks at noon on the hour. The pope wanted to set a standard time for all the bells of the Church of Rome so that they would chime at the same time. UNUSUAL VENICE THE VENETIAN BACARO If you’re wanting to appease your appetite in between walks around town, a cichéto (snack) and ombra de vin (glass of wine) are Venetian classics. For those who didn’t know, the bàcaro is the typical Venetian pub: cocktails are served, with just a few euros. Stop in to a traditional cicheteria in the heart of Venice. It is the perfect place if you want to taste fegato alla Veneziana (liver and onions). Also on the menu is the classic baccalà mantecato (creamy cod), le seppioline ai ferri o fritte (fried or grilled squid) and, but only during the Spring, le moeche con la polenta bianca (tender fried crabs with polenta). For a complete meal, we recommend making a reservation.

During the 1700s, gambling was a rather popular activity with the Venetians. There was so much demand for it that in the middle of the century there were a good 118 casinos around Piazza San Marco – private places in which one bet on dice, cards while chatting freely and enjoying themselves in good company. Casino Venier was one of those places, and today, without a doubt, is one of the city’s most charming that is still intact. It’s open for interesting and entertaining visits for the public. It is located between Rialto and San Marco, enter and secretly overlook from the “liagò”, a small covered balcony, looking over Ponte Baretteri and then discover the peephole in the marble floor of the entrance hall: it was used to see (without being seen) whoever was at the door, precisely under the bridge, and if necessary, decide to escape at the last minute.
DISCOVER THE SECRET POTION THAT CURED ALL ILLS Just in front of the pharmacy on the corner between Santo Stefano and the calle dello Spezier (synonym of pharmacist) a forgotten detail remains impressed on the pavement. It is one of three circular holes which, at that time, was left from the heavy cauldrons used by Venetian pharmacists during the preparation of the Teriaca, an (almost) magic potion which healed a multitude of diseases and which only 40 pharmacies in Venice had permission to make. The most common ingredient was viper dust, other original ones like the horn of the Unicorn, and opium. Together with spices imported from the East had to be put on public display for 3 days to guarantee their authenticity (including the live viper). Then began the downright alchemic fabrication of the concoction – under the careful eye of the Magistrate of Health. During the 17th century, Venice enjoyed worldwide fame for the preparation of the Teriaca, to the point of exporting it throughout Europe, Turkey and Armenia.
