This tour takes you over fertile agricultural fields and meadows alongside the river Svartá. It is suitable for beginners and also for those with more riding experience, as we have the possibility to cross a river on horseback! This trip begins with a highlight: After a short ride on countryside tracks we will arrive at the amazing waterfall “Reykjafoss”. You will soon understand why Icelanders describe it as “the smoking falls”! Later on you will be having fun crossing quite a few rivers on your trusted companion, the Icelandic Horse. In the amazing natural paradise of the river delta “Héraðsvötn” you might, depending on the season, be able to watch birds hatching or pick a handful of crowberries whilst taking a short break. The terrain offers the best possibilities to fully experience the gaits of the Icelandic Horse, especially the famous tölt.
Dieser Ausritt beginnt mit einem Highlight: Schon nach kurzer Zeit erreichen wir den stattlichen Wasserfall „Reykjafoss“. Wenn Sie ihn sehen, werden Sie sofort verstehen warum er „Der rauchende Wasserfall“ heißt. Auf unserem weiteren Weg müssen wir mit unseren treuen Gefährten, den Pferden, einige Flüsse durchqueren: Ein ganz einzigartiges Vergnügen! Im beeindruckenden Naturparadies des Flussdeltas „Héraðsvötn“ können Sie, abhängig von der Saison, Vogelkolonien beobachten oder während einer Pause eine Handvoll Krähenbeeren pflücken. To spend a whole day travelling on horseback is truly Icelandic! In the beginning of the trip, you will be introduced to your two best friends for the day: Your horses. While riding one of them, you will lead the other horse beside you and later on change. Our guides will explain to you, how to do that comfortably. To ride in Icelandic style with a “hand horse” is certainly a unique and wonderful experience. During the ride you will follow the Húseyarkvisl stream and the powerful glacial river Héraðsvötn, where you will see a huge variety of birds during the season. You will be enjoying the impressive panorama of the Skagafjörður mountains, while tölting on ever changing riding paths.

Just like Icelanders, we ride with an accompanying hand horse and together we climb up and down narrow valleys and canyons, cross countless rivers and enjoy smooth tölt on grassy paths. During this adventurous challenge your horses will carry you off into barely touched nature, away from civilization. You stay in one of our cosy Hestasport cottages during the ride and can enjoy a relaxing bath in the natural hot tub after a long day in the saddle.

Take part in farmers‘ work and enjoy this traditional festival of Icelandic culture. We ride into the highlands with a hand horse in search of the sheep that have been running free in the mountains all summer. They have to be brought down safely to the farms, before the harsh Icelandic winter takes hold. You will be riding “off road” through breathtaking scenery and there will be plenty of opportunity to help handling the sheep.
Der herbstliche Schafabtrieb ist einer der Höhepunkte isländischer Kultur. Nach einem Sommer frei in den Bergen müssen die Schafe rechtzeitig vor dem harten Winter wieder zu ihren Höfen gebracht werden. Wir reiten mit Handpferd in die Berge und helfen später den Bauern dabei ihre Schafe zu finden und sicher ins Tal zu treiben. Dabei verlassen wir alle Wege und reiten „off road“ durch ein atemberaubendes Panorama aus kargen Hügeln, tiefen Tälern und kalten Bergflüssen. Es gibt reichlich Gelegenheit den Bauern beim Sortieren der Schafe tatkräftig zur Hand zu gehen.

Driving horses for summer grazing into the highlands and abandoned valleys is an old Icelandic tradition. In September the farmers collect their livestock and you shouldn‘t miss the opportunity to join this adventure, which is even for locals absolutely essential. You will experience a truly unique atmosphere when following hundreds of horses towards the corral and watch how the farmers try to find their horses again – maybe by their hair style?
Es ist eine alte isländische Tradition, die Jungpferde, Stuten und Fohlen ins Hochland oder in abgelegene Täler zu treiben, wo sie auf sich selbst gestellt die Sommermonate verbringen. Im September reiten die Farmer los, um ihre Herden zurückzuholen, bevor der harte Winter kommt. Selbst für Einheimische ist die Teilnahme an diesem Ereignis ein großer Spaß und jeder will dabei sein.
