Introduction Welcome to Circle City Volleyball’s 33rd season! Over the last quarter of a century of operation, we’ve grown from a tiny club of 35 members to a nationally recognized program. Last year our club qualified 10 teams for USA Volleyball Junior Nationals, 4 teams competed at AAU’s and 4 others finished their season at Asics Junior Nationals in Chicago. Overall, Circle had 25 teams compete at various levels. We’ve put this handbook together to tell you a bit about junior volleyball in general, about our club, it’s philosophies and what it takes to become successful in our program. We invite you to “take the next step” with us as we begin another exciting season of volleyball. Take the next step to improve your volleyball skills, meet new friends and challenge yourself to become the best you can be! Take the next step and compete at a National level against some of the top players and programs in the country. We hope this booklet will assist you in making an informed decision about whether Circle City is right for you. We certainly hope you will decide to join us for the 2017 season.

Why Play Junior Volleyball? Junior volleyball programs have exploded across the country. The first National tournament was held over 30 years ago and only twenty teams made the trip. Last season, there were more than 100,000 registered junior players in the United States. Why this incredible growth? There are many factors, but the overall growth of women’s sports programs is important. As women’s college programs have prospered, the level of play has increased greatly. The average level of ability of junior players has increased as well. So successful are junior program athletes that most College Coaches recruit exclusively from the junior program ranks. The reason is simple. Coaches can see many solid prospects in a single day at a junior tournament, while it is difficult to see more than one prospect a day during the high school season. This becomes even truer with the NCAA rules governing the number of times a collegiate coach can contact or observe in person a given player. Is junior volleyball only for the college bound athlete? Certainly not! Our program begins in the first grade. Who can say whether these kids are even headed for college at all, let alone to play volleyball? For most of our members, junior volleyball is simply another challenging experience which should lead to a lot more fun on the court as playing skills increase. Playing for college teams is far from the minds of many of our players. Many of our players have recently been exposed to a higher level of competition than they have previously experienced, whether it’s middle school or high school. These players realize they need club volleyball to remain competitive or to gain an edge. We have a training program designed to help them do just that. We can help, but much of an individual’s advancement and improvement is still up to that individual. Athletic talent, size, speed and good work habits are all necessary for top success as an elite player. Players who lack in any of these qualities have to make up for the deficiency in one area by working harder to improve another. If you have a sincere desire to improve, then you will do well in a junior volleyball program. So what about scholarships? Well, they do exist, and many of our players go on to play in college; most of these receive partial or full scholarships. About 98% of our graduating seniors become college athletes. Let’s put that in true perspective, though. Many more players are involved in Circle City Volleyball Club as underclassmen than as seniors. By the time the senior season is reached, players usually know whether they have the ability and the desire to compete at the college level. In conclusion, club volleyball is a great place to meet friends, work up a sweat, get lost trying to find gyms, and feel good about yourself. If you want to experience that, join us for the 2017 season!

About Circle City Volleyball Club Circle City Volleyball Club was originated by Tom Pingel, who is now a Senior Director of USAV Events and High Performance, in 1984. In its first season, Circle City Volleyball Club fielded 35 athletes on 3 teams (one 18 & under, two 16 & under) and 3 coaches. Now after 32 seasons, Circle City is much larger than the size of the original version. Offering teams in age groups 10 & under through 18, Circle City Volleyball Club has become one of the largest clubs to attempt to meet the needs of various levels of volleyball athletes, fielding 25 teams and over 250 players in 2016.

2016 Highlights 2016 has been a great year for Circle City Volleyball Club with competitive results at all levels. The goal for most clubs across the country is to qualify in the Open Division of USAV Junior Nationals. In 2016 Circle City qualified 3 teams in the Open Division and 7 more in the National/American Division for USAV Junior Nationals. Circle City works to play the most competitive schedule of any club in Indiana while also keeping travel reasonable. We are fortunate to have the Mideast Qualifier in our backyard allowing our teams to play other clubs from across the country. In the 2017 season, Chicago will again host their Windy City National Qualifier giving our teams even more opportunity to play teams from a distance while still keeping travel costs to a minimum. Here is a list of some of our year-end accomplishments: • 18 Purple started their season off strong by winning the Girls Winter Volleyball Championships in Chicago earning a bid to play in the 18 Open division at USAV Nationals. They also finished 3rd at the Central Zone Invite, 2nd at the President’s Day Classic in St. Louis, 5th at the MidEast Qualifier, and 5th at Bluegrass. • 18 Black finished 5th at MEQ, 7th at Colorado Crossroads, qualified by winning the 18s Hoosier Bid Regional earning a bid in the 18 National division. • 17 Black secured their spot in the 17 USA division at USAV Junior Nationals by placing 3rd at the Windy City National Qualifier. The team went on to place 11th out of 36 teams at Nationals. During their season they saw a 1st place finish in 17 Premier division at the President’s Day Classic, a 2nd place finish in 17 Club at the CZ Invite, and a 5th place finish in 17 Premier at the Bluegrass Prequalifier. • 16 Black finished 9th out of 146 teams in the 16 Club Division at AAU’s. They also had a 3rd place finish in 16 Premier division at the CZ Invite and a 2nd place finish in 16 Premier division at the 2016 President’s Day Classic. • 15 Purple had a phenomenal year in 2016. They added another national trophy to the case by finishing 3rd in the country in open at USAV Junior Nationals. They played well in Open all year finishing 1st at President’s Day in St. Louis, 2nd at the Bluegrass Prequalifier, 2nd at the Central Zone Invite, and they double qualified for nationals by finishing 3rd at the Mid-East Qualifier and 3rd at the Show Me Qualifier. The team also produced 2 All-Americans in Caitlin Baird and Brooklyn Phillips. • 15 Black became our second 15s team to qualify for USAV Nationals by placing 3rd in the USA division at the Windy City National Qualifier. The team also placed 3rd at the President’s Day Classic in the 15 Premier division. They had strong finishes in their other tournaments placing 5th in 15 Premier at the CZ Invite, 5th at the Mid-East Qualifier in 15 USA, and 1st at the Midwest Championships. • 15 White had a phenomenal year as well finishing 5th at USAV Nationals in the 15 American Division. They qualified for nationals by winning the Windy City National Qualifier while only dropping one set. During the season the team placed 1st at the CZ Shootout, the Academy Midwest Classic and the Midwest Championships. They saw a 2nd place finish in the 17s division at the Circle City Challenge. • 14 Purple secured their spot at USAV Nationals with a 5th place finish at the Northern Lights National Qualifier. The team placed 2nd at the President’s Day Classic and 5th at the CZ Invite. • 14 Black finished 13th out of 64 teams in the 14 American Division at USAV Junior Nationals. The team had a strong year finishing 3rd at the Windy City Qualifier, 3rd at the Nike Mid-East Qualifier in 14 American, 3rd in 14 Premier at the President’s Day Classic and 5th in 14 Premier at the CZ Invite. The team won their bid to play in 14 American division at the Hoosier Bid Regionals.

• 14 White finished 15th out of 61 teams in the 14 Patriot division at USAV Junior Nationals. The team also placed 13th out of 76 teams in the 14 American division at the Windy City National Qualifier. • 13 Purple earned a bid to the 13 National division by winning the Hoosier Bid Regionals. They finished 13th out of 48 teams in the division at the USAV Junior Nationals. • 12 Purple finished 5th at the Nike Mideast Qualifier and earned a bid into the 12 National division at USAV Junior Nationals by winning the Hoosier Bid Regionals. The team also placed 1st in the CZ Championships and 2nd at the Circle City Invite. USA Volleyball is the governing body for competitive volleyball in the United States. In 1981, it made a commitment to provide opportunities for young players to play outside of their school programs and in 1991 created a division of the USAV exclusively devoted to Youth & Junior Olympic Volleyball Development. The USAV states that junior volleyball programs represented “the future of volleyball in the U.S.” [It’s junior program] was created to serve as a major building block for scholastic, collegiate, recreational and club play throughout the country. Circle City Volleyball Club is one of a very small number of clubs that promotes all of the goals set forth by USA Volleyball. Most clubs are geared either for elite athletes, or for less skilled players. Our graduates have played in the US Olympic Festival and have represented the USA on the Youth National Team. Many have played on topranked college teams. Many have also been All-State or All-American in High School. On the other hand, many of our players enrolled are just trying to make their school’s team. Our training group allows players of all skill levels to learn, improve, and progress at a pace they can achieve.

Mid-East Qualifier (MEQ) & Central Zone Series The 23rd Annual Mid-East Junior National Qualifier and the Central Zone Series will again be hosted by Circle City Volleyball Club. Both events are premier national caliber tournaments that attract some of the best competition in the nation. In addition, these tournaments provide a great opportunity for parents to earn credit toward their daughter’s club account.

President’s Day Tournament In 2017, Circle City will be hosting the 5th Annual St Louis President’s Day Tournament at the St Louis America’s Center. 12s-13s will play February 18th and 19th and 14s-18s will play February 18th through 20th. Information can be found at www.presidents-day-classic.com.

Tournament Schedule Circle City works very hard with each team’s players and parents in order to make an affordable and appropriate schedule for their team. While other clubs try to limit their schedules to either JVA or USA events, we will do what is best for each individual team. The majority of the tournaments that our teams participated in were within a reasonable driving distance. Other clubs claim that we are more expensive because we participate in USA Volleyball, but that is incorrect. While we do support USA Volleyball and the US National Teams by registering our teams with USA Volleyball, we work hard at running tournaments almost every week and this helps us keep our fees significantly lower at all levels than any of the other major clubs in the area. We also have comparable or fewer hotel room nights per player and our teams do not travel any more or any farther than those clubs.

3

Coaching Method For the first portion of practices, players will work on individual skills. Our players may be grouped by position to work in more of a controlled environment. We are geared to ensure that each player is being taught the correct technique while also making sure that the Circle City ideals and principles are being emphasized by each and every coach in our program. Practices will then focus on team concepts and game scenarios. For our National teams, when possible Sunday practices will be extended to 2.5 hours. During this additional time, we will focus on individual skills and/or positional training.

Sponsor Circle City will continue to be sponsored by Nike. Nike is well known to be a leading force in sports and is a natural partner with Circle City Volleyball, one of the leading volleyball clubs in the nation.

The Circle City Program The Circle City Program consists of 3 practices a week for National level teams and 2 practices a week for power teams, ranging from 5:30pm to 10pm during the week. Sunday practices can be as early as noon and will also go in two hour increments. We expect all our coaches to commit to using this time to help your daughter improve by emphasizing individual skills first and then building toward team skills. Each of our teams will play about two tournaments a month, which will result in 40-60 matches a year. Other benefits from being included in the Circle City program are full access to recruiting aides, full access to the fitness center (Capitol Sports Fitness), top level uniform and apparel provided by Nike (minimum 2 jerseys, spandex, kneepads, socks, warm-ups and athletic bag), and the USAV Membership and Insurance. Hopefully, with the commitment of great players and coaches, we will continue to build an environment of fairness, improvement, fun and happiness!

Our Expectations for Circle City Volleyball Club Players Just showing up for practices isn’t enough. We need players who are punctual, who are in the proper frame of mind to work hard, and who pay attention to coaches and cooperate with teammates and coaches. • Commitment: It is vital to be committed to the program. If you really don’t want to participate, don’t. If you work hard in practices, matches and scrimmages, you are likely to have a successful season. Players who are committed to improving will have little time for you if you simply wish to turn practices into social events. • Regular Attendance: We know that not all players can show up to every practice. Exams and other activities sometimes must take priority. It’s important that you attend every possible practice, though, and notify your coach or CCVBC office when you can’t attend. • Respect for the rules of the club: This includes the club’s and the USAV Player’s Code of Conduct. Rules will be clearly stated and strictly enforced. Each travel team will also have it’s own rules established by it’s coach. • Cooperation: You may, for example, take an overnight trip with us. These trips require that you will have some rules that you’ll have to live by. We expect you to respect the rules we make. • Court Demeanor: Be attentive and enthusiastic on and off the court. Most of the time, players are not aware when college coaches are present. You can make or break your recruiting chances or even the chance of a teammate by the way you act when a member of a CCVBC team. • Maintaining good grades: Even though not all players are trying to earn scholarships, we still consider ourselves a college prep program. We think that you should consider yourselves scholar-athletes and strive for the best possible performance in school.

What We Expect from Parents Yes, Parents, we do expect some things from you. While writing a dues check each month does help keep the club operating smoothly, please remember that there are several other ways in which you can help: • Deliver and pick up players on time. Coaches have had to wait as long as 45 minutes after evening practices for all players to be picked up. Please remember that coaches may have families or other commitments after practices. Late arrivals to practice cause disruptions. • Please assist with transportation of players to out of town events. Circle City is opposed to having players drive to out-of-town events. We encourage parents of the team to work together on transportation arrangements. • Please watch your daughter when she competes. Even though she may not let you know, she will appreciate it if you are there to cheer the team. Be supportive of your daughter without judging her, the coach, or her teammates. • Attend team organizational meetings. Each time a new team is formed, it will have a meeting to get parents, players and coaches acquainted with each other. Each team and coach has a few differences and it is important for coaches and players to know each other. • Pay dues on time. If dues are not paid, coaches and bills cannot be paid. Monthly fees and tournament expenses must be paid in full each month in order for your daughter to compete in tournaments the following month. We are a small business, so outstanding fees put a strain on operations. This year, failure to pay and/or communicate with the office will result in suspension of playing time. This year, failure to pay and/or communicate with the office will result in suspension of playing time. • Finally, be a positive role model for your player. Don’t approach a coach with complaints after a tough match or tournament. If you have concerns, schedule a meeting after everyone cools off. Think before criticizing anyone connected with your daughter’s team. Criticism is contagious and often hurtful. Take a positive approach to problem solving.

Age group definitions above are binding for the entire season immediately preceding the USAV Junior National Championships, and there shall be no appeal. Players may play “up” in an age group but never down.

IHSAA Rules Affecting Participation The IHSAA has some rules that affect outside sport programs. These rules are: 1. No staff members from a particular high school may coach roster players from that high school while school is in session. High school staff may coach players from other schools at any time, and their own players after the school year has ended. 2. No more than 3 players from 1 high school may play for a single team. 3. The above #2 rule does not apply to seniors, nor to grade school students, nor to students who are not on the school’s team. 4. Athletes may play an outside sport at the same time as they play another sport for their high school. (You may play Circle City Volleyball Club and school basketball at the same time.) 5. You may not play for Circle City Volleyball Club and a high school volleyball team at the same time. This is why Circle City Volleyball Club’s season does not begin until the State tournament is over. Please note that other states have different rules. When we play teams from other states, they play under their own state’s rules even while in Indiana. We play under IHSAA rules wherever we play.

What is NOT Covered by the Fees Tournament Entry Fees: These are charged on a pro-rata basis according to the cost of the events a player’s team attends. Players who miss an event that their team attends will still be responsible for their share of the entry fee. These will be invoiced in December and are due January 20th. Participants must remember that going to a major end of the season event such as the USAV Junior Nationals or AAUs will add a substantial charge all at once at the end of the season as this will not be finalized in December. For large, multi-day events, Circle City Volleyball Club may also pre-bill participants for the estimated expenses. Those not covering their expenses may not be allowed to participate in the event. Tournament Expenses: Costs for lodging, if attending a tournament requiring overnight travel, are billed as required. The coach’s travel and hotel expenses are in addition to team fees. Transportation: Travel to tournaments is not covered.

8

Expense Account Billings All club fees and any cost incurred by a player that is not covered by club fees will be invoiced to each player’s expense account. Each player has such an account. Club fees will be invoiced on the 20th of each month and all other fees will be invoiced as they are incurred. All invoices will be due within 30 days of the invoice date. Circle City Volleyball will be using FreshBooks for all player accounts. Fresh Books is an online system that will allow our parents to login anytime to see the status of their account. It will also send parents email notifications whenever invoices or payments are posted. This will allow our parents full visibility into their daughter’s accounts without having to wait for a monthly statement.

2016-17 Registration Procedures Please complete CCVBC Registration before the first day of tryouts.

Circle City Registration Download the following forms from our website www.capitolsportscenter.com: • Agreement for Participation • Circle City Volleyball Code of Conduct • Player Questionnaire • Payment Plan Option • 2016-17 USAV Medical Release Form Complete the forms and bring them to the first tryout date along with the $350.00 registration fee. (Registration fee is refunded if your daughter does not make a team.)

USAV Registration This will not be done until AFTER teams are chosen. If choosing to register/renew prior to the completion of tryouts, DO NOT PAY the USAV Registration fee online as it is part of your Circle City fees. More info can be found on the last page of this handbook. If you have any questions please contact Kelly Due at 317-839-5222 or [email protected].

Sponsorships If you have a possible sponsor, please contact Scott McQueen for information. There are some minimum standards for team sponsorships, and he will be glad to tell you about them. Checks should not be made payable to the participant, they must be payable to: Capitol Sports Center.

Bad Weather Cancellation Policy In the occurrence of bad weather, participants can make the following assumptions: 1. Practices at Capitol Sports Center will rarely be canceled. “If you can make it, we will practice” will typically be the philosophy. If people cannot make it, their absence will be understood. If a Capitol Sports Center practice is cancelled, players will be notified directly by telephone. 2. Tournaments rarely get cancelled. 3. When in doubt, contact Capitol Sports Center to get the updated information.

USAV Membership ****THIS INFO ONLY NEEDED AFTER TEAMS ARE CHOSEN**** Players must join the Hoosier Region via one of our sanctioned junior clubs. For details, contact the club you are interested in joining. Typically a club will include your Hoosier Region member registration fee as part of its club fee. DO NOT PAY the USAV Registration fee online, as it is part of your Circle City fees. Please note these important items before starting your registration: • The junior participant registration electronic signature process includes private secured parent/ guardian information that is a mandatory part of that process. Club representatives or coaches may no longer register their teams or clubs as a group. For that reason, a parent or guardian must register the junior participant with USAV. • Parent or guardian will need a driver’s license or state identification card and your social security number to complete your registration. • If you were registered with any USAV affiliated region other than the Hoosier Region last season, please contact the Hoosier Region office prior to starting your registration. You will need to provide the name of the region in which you were last registered so it can be changed in the system in order to proceed. The Hoosier Region office contact information is at the end of this document.

Online Registration Instructions: STEP #1 • Go to www.indianavolleyball.org, locate the JumpServe menu on the homepage, and click on “Become a Member of Hoosier Region” STEP #2 – IF you have NEVER been registered with any USA Volleyball affiliated Region • Click on “New Members (Never registered in any region of USA Volleyball)” and proceed by filling in your information • Continue through the registration process until completed, paying close attention to the required fields STEP #2 – IF you were registered with the Hoosier Region LAST SEASON (or have received confirmation your information from another Region has been transferred to the Hoosier Region in the system) • Click on “Members Previously Registered in Any Region” • Enter your username and password used to register last season on the next screen & click “Log in” • Click “My Information” from the left hand menu. Your information from last year should populate the screen. Check the info for accuracy and edit it if necessary using the “Edit Contact Info” button at the bottom. • Continue through the registration process until completed paying close attention to the required fields When you have successfully completed the application from either step, you will receive a confirmation email from the USAV Webpoint system which will contain all information pertaining to your membership and options you have chosen. Forward this email to [email protected]. If you need assistance, please contact the Region office at [email protected] or call (574) 370-9627.
