Introduction Welcome to Circle City Volleyball’s 30th season! Over the last quarter of a century of operation, we’ve grown from a tiny club of 35 members to a nationally recognized program. Last year our club qualified 8 teams for USA Volleyball Junior Nationals, 5 teams competed at AAU’s and 5 others finished their season at Asics Junior Nationals in Chicago. Overall, Circle had 27 teams compete at various levels. We’ve put this handbook together to tell you a bit about junior volleyball in general, about our club, it’s philosophies and what it takes to become successful in our program. We invite you to “take the next step” with us as we begin another exciting season of volleyball. Take the next step to improve your volleyball skills, meet new friends and challenge yourself to become the best you can be! Take the next step and compete at a National level against some of the top players and programs in the country. We hope this booklet will assist you in making an informed decision about whether Circle City is right for you. We certainly hope you will decide to join us for the 2014 season.

Why Play Junior Volleyball? Junior volleyball programs have exploded across the country. The first National tournament was held over 30 years ago and only twenty teams made the trip. Last season, there were more than 100,000 registered junior players in the United States. Why this incredible growth? There are many factors, but the overall growth of women’s sports programs is important. As women’s college programs have prospered, the level of play has increased greatly. The average level of ability of junior players has increased as well. So successful are junior program athletes that most College Coaches recruit exclusively from the junior program ranks. The reason is simple. Coaches can see many solid prospects in a single day at a junior tournament, while it is difficult to see more than one prospect a day during the high school season. This becomes even more true with the NCAA rules governing the number of times a collegiate coach can contact or observe in person a given player. Is junior volleyball only for the college bound athlete? Certainly not! Our program begins in the first grade. Who can say whether these kids are even headed for college at all, let alone to play volleyball? For most of our members, junior volleyball is simply another challenging experience which should lead to a lot more fun on the court as playing skills increase. Playing for college teams is far from the minds of many of our players. Many of our players have recently been exposed to a higher level of competition than they have previously experienced, whether it’s middle school or high school. These players realize they need club volleyball to remain competitive or to gain an edge. We have a training program designed to help them do just that. We can help, but much of an individual’s advancement and improvement is still up to that individual. Athletic talent, size, speed and good work habits are all necessary for top success as an elite player. Players who lack in any of these qualities have to make up for the deficiency in one area by working harder to improve another. If you have a sincere desire to improve, then you will do well in a junior volleyball program. So what about scholarships? Well, they do exist, and many of our players go on to play in college; most of these receive partial or full scholarships. About 98% of our graduating seniors become college athletes. Let’s put that in true perspective, though. Many more players are involved in Circle City Volleyball Club as underclassmen than as seniors. By the time the senior season is reached, players usually know whether they have the ability and the desire to compete at the college level. In conclusion, club volleyball is a great place to meet friends, sweat a lot, get lost trying to find gyms, and feel good about yourself. If you want to experience that, join us for the 2014 season.

About Circle City Volleyball Club Circle City Volleyball Club was originated by Tom Pingel, who is now in charge of the High Performance Program, in 1984. In its first season, Circle City Volleyball Club fielded 35 athletes on 3 teams (one 18 & under, two 16 & under) and 3 coaches. Now after 29 seasons, Circle City is much larger than the size of the original version. Offering teams in age groups 10 & under through 18, Circle City Volleyball Club has become one of the largest clubs to attempt to meet the needs of various levels of volleyball athletes, fielding 27 teams and over 270 players in 2013.

2013 Highlights In 2013, Circle City had 18 teams compete in major year end events, including USA Junior Nationals, AAU’s and Asics Juniors Nationals. Circle City was one of only a select few clubs in the entire country to qualify 4 teams in the Open Division of USAV Nationals. Circle City has qualified their 18-1s for the top division of Nationals in 26 of the 29 years of Circle City’s existence. Also in 2013, 16 White won the 16s division of Asics Junior Nationals, while 13 Black finished 3rd. 12 Black, 13 White and 15 Tonn all finished 9th. 16 Black had a strong finish making the Gold Division at AAU’s. 18 Black finished 5th at USA Junior Nationals. 12 Nike Elite finished 9th at USA Junior Nationals. Circle City has a great history of being successful on the national (236 teams qualified, 87 in the Open Division) and on the individual level (over 440 scholarships received). USA Volleyball is the governing body for competitive volleyball in the United States. In 1981, it made a commitment to provide opportunities for young players to play outside of their school programs and in 1991created a division of the USAV exclusively devoted to Youth & Junior Olympic Volleyball Development. The USAV states that junior volleyball programs represented “the future of volleyball in the U.S.” [It’s junior program] was created to serve as a major building block for scholastic, collegiate, recreational and club play throughout the country. Circle City Volleyball Club is one of a very small number of clubs that promotes all of the goals set forth by USA Volleyball. Most clubs are geared either for elite athletes, or for less skilled players. Our graduates have played in the US Olympic Festival and have represented the USA on the Youth National Team. Many have played on top-ranked college teams. Many have also been All-State or All-American in High School. On the other hand, many of our players enrolled are just trying to make their school’s team. Our training group allows players of all skill levels to learn, improve, and progress at a pace they can achieve. We have 7 courts under one roof that are used for volleyball. The Circle City Volleyball Club also has access to Capitol Sports Fitness, which offers an aerobic room, cardio theater, spinning studio and weight room. Also available are 2 tanning beds, 2 racquetball courts and a dance studio.

Mideast Qualifier (MEQ) & Central Zone Series The 20th Annual Hoosier Mideast Junior National Qualifier and the Central Zone Series will again be hosted by Circle City Volleyball Club. Both events are premier national caliber tournaments that attract some of the best competition in the nation. To be able to host such events, staff will be needed in various capacities.

President’s Day Tournament In 2014, Circle City will be hosting the 2nd Annual St Louis President’s Day Tournament at the St Louis America’s Center. 12s & 13s will play February 15th and 16th and 14s-18s will play February 15th through 18th. Information can be found at http://www.capitolsportscenter.com/csc/presidents_day.asp.

CIRCLE CITY VOLLEYBALL CLUB

Tournament Schedule Circle City works very hard with each team’s players and parents in order to make an affordable and appropriate schedule for their team. While other clubs try to limit their schedules to either JVA or USA events, we will do what is best for each individual team. The majority of the tournaments that our teams participated in were within a reasonable driving distance. Other clubs claim that we are more expensive because we participate in USA Volleyball, but that is incorrect. While we do support USA Volleyball and the US National Teams by registering our teams with USA Volleyball, we work hard at running tournaments almost every week and this helps us keep our fees significantly lower at all levels than any of the other major clubs in the area. We also have comparable or fewer hotel room nights per player and our teams do not travel any more or any farther than those clubs. If you would like a detailed cost comparison between our club and any other, we will gladly provide it.

Coaching Method For the first half of practices, players will work on individual skills. The players may be grouped by position to work in more of a controlled environment. For the power teams, the coaches will run these drills but will be overseen by a Pod Coach. This time will allow the teams to get more reps and instruction by a variety of coaches. Our Pod Coaches will help make sure that each player is being taught the correct technique while also making sure that the Circle City ideals and principles are being emphasized by each and every coach in our program. The second half of practice will be run by the coach of each team and will focus mainly on team concepts. For our National teams in 2014, we will be extending our practices at least one day a week for all National teams 14 & up. During this extra time, we will focus only on individual skills. This extra time will replace the positionals that we have had in the past and will be implemented within the practices.

Sponsor Circle City will continue to be sponsored by Nike. Nike is well known to be a leading force in sports and is a natural partner with Circle City Volleyball, one of the leading volleyball clubs in the nation.

The Circle City Program The Circle City Program consists of 3 practices a week for National level teams and 2 practices a week for power teams, ranging from 5:30pm to 10pm during the week. Sunday practices can be as early as noon and will also go in two hour increments. We expect all our coaches to commit to using this time to help your daughter improve by emphasizing individual skills first and then building toward team skills. Each of our teams will play about two tournaments a month, which will result in 40-60 matches a year. Other benefits from being included in the Circle City program are full access to recruiting aides, full access to the fitness center (Capitol Sports Fitness), top level uniform and apparel provided by Nike (minimum 2 jerseys, 2 spandex, kneepads, socks, warm-ups and athletic bag), and the USAV Membership and Insurance. Hopefully, with the commitment of great players and coaches, we will continue to build an environment of fairness, improvement, fun and happiness!

New for 2014 • Accelerated Rehab will have a trainer on site two days a week • Monthly skill clinics for Power Teams

Our Expectations for Circle City Volleyball Club Players Just showing up for practices isn’t enough. We need players who are punctual, who are in the proper frame of mind to work hard, and who pay attention to coaches and cooperate with teammates and coaches. • Commitment: It is vital to be committed to the program. If you really don’t want to participate, don’t. If you work hard in practices, matches and scrimmages, you are likely to have a successful season. Players who are committed to improving will have little time for you if you simply wish to turn practices into social events. • Regular Attendance: We know that not all players can show up to every practice. Exams and other activities sometimes must take priority. It’s important that you attend every possible practice, though, and notify your coach or CCVBC office when you can’t attend. • Respect for the rules of the club: This includes the club’s and the USAV Player’s Code of Conduct. Rules will be clearly stated and strictly enforced. Each travel team will also have it’s own rules established by it’s coach. • Cooperation: You may, for example, take an overnight trip with us. These trips require that you will have some rules that you’ll have to live by. We expect you to respect the rules we make. • Court Demeanor: Be attentive and enthusiastic on and off the court. Most of the time, players are not aware when college coaches are present. You can make or break your recruiting chances or even the chance of a teammate by the way you act when a member of a CCVBC team. • Maintaining good grades: Even though not all players are trying to earn scholarships, we still consider ourselves a college prep program. We think that you should consider yourselves scholar-athletes and strive for the best possible performance in school.

CIRCLE CITY VOLLEYBALL CLUB

What We Expect from Parents Yes, Parents, we do expect some things from you. While writing a dues check each month does help keep the club operating smoothly, please remember that there are several other ways in which you can help: • Deliver and pick up players on time. Coaches have had to wait as long as 45 minutes after evening practices for all players to be picked up. Please remember that coaches may have families or other commitments after practices. Late arrivals to practice cause disruptions. • Please assist with transportation of players to out of town events. Circle City is opposed to having players drive to out-of-town events. We encourage parents of the team to work together on transportation arrangements. • Please watch your daughter when she competes. Even though she may not let you know, she will appreciate it if you are there to cheer the team. Be supportive of your daughter without judging her, the coach, or her teammates. • Attend team organizational meetings. Each time a new team is formed, it will have a meeting to get parents, players and coaches acquainted with each other. Each team and coach has a few differences and it is important for coaches and players to know each other. • Pay dues on time. If dues are not paid, coaches and bills cannot be paid. Monthly fees and tournament expenses must be paid in full each month in order for your daughter to compete in tournaments the following month. We are a small business, so outstanding fees put a strain on operations. This year, failure to pay and/or communicate with the office will result in suspension of playing time. • Finally, be a positive role model for your player. Don’t approach a coach with complaints after a tough match or tournament. If you have concerns, schedule a meeting after everyone cools off. Think before criticizing anyone connected with your daughter’s team. Criticism is contagious and often hurtful. Take a positive approach to problem solving.

Refund Policy If for some reason you decide you do not want to continue in the Circle City program, refunds of the registration fees will be given by the following guidelines: • Full Refund on the first day of tryouts. • A refund of $200 before teams are picked. • No refunds will be given after teams are selected unless player is not selected for a team.

Age Group Classifications The following age groups shall be in effect for athletes: 18 & Under Division: 17 & Under Division: 16 & Under Division: 15 & Under Division: 14 & Under Division: 13 & Under Division: 12 & Under Division:

Players who were born on or after September 1st, 1995, or were high school students in the 12th grade or below during the current academic year and are 19 years of age or younger (born on or after September 1, 1994). Players who were born on or after September 1st, 1996. Players who were born on or after September 1st, 1997. Players who were born on or after September 1st, 1998. Players who were born on or after September 1st, 1999. Players who were born on or after September 1st, 2000. Players who were born on or after September 1st, 2001.

Age group definitions above are binding for the entire season immediately preceding the USAV Junior National Championships, and there shall be no appeal. Players may play “up” in an age group but never down.

IHSAA Rules Affecting Participation The IHSAA has some rules that affect outside sport programs. These rules are: 1. No staff members from a particular high school may coach roster players from that high school while school is in session. High school staff may coach players from other schools at any time, and their own players after the school year has ended. 2. No more than 3 players from 1 high school may play for a single team. 3. The above #2 rule does not apply to seniors, nor to grade school students, nor to students who are not on the school’s team. 4. Athletes may play an outside sport at the same time as they play another sport for their high school. (You may play Circle City Volleyball Club and school basketball at the same time.) 5. You may not play for Circle City Volleyball Club and a high school volleyball team at the same time. This is why Circle City Volleyball Club’s season does not begin until the State tournament is over. Please note that other states have different rules. When we play teams from other states, they play under their own state’s rules even while in Indiana. We play under IHSAA rules wherever we play.

CIRCLE CITY VOLLEYBALL CLUB

A Message to Parents by Tom Marks This article was written in 1989 by Tom Marks, one of the original Circle City coaches. We believe it is as true today as it was then... A friend of mine is a YMCA director. He told me not long ago that many people are worried that today’s youths are in trouble. While that may be the case, I told him that many of us in the Indianapolis area think our Circle City Volleyball Club offers many opportunities for your girls to grow and prosper. There are all kinds of programs around the country; some are academic, some athletic. Others are social or spiritual. In the formation of the Circle City Volleyball Club we have tried to build a group which allows young people not only to sharpen their athletic skills, but also to grow into more mature and responsible young women. Circle City Volleyball Club players come in all shapes and sizes. They have a wide variety of skill levels when entering the program. Even so, there is one tie which binds our successful athletes together. That tie is a commitment. It’s not easy getting up an hour earlier than usual just to finish homework, or rising at 5:00 AM on a weekend to be on time for a tournament. Over the years the players in the program have shown that they were willing to make these sacrifices in order to find the time for this program and become better volleyball players. The ones who consistently stayed committed to their goals have seldom been disappointed. Before your child begins this program, take stock of where she is, physically and emotionally. I hope your memory is good, because next summer you may find that she’s gone through a number of changes. A year in the Circle City Volleyball Club system is part of an entire educational process. We certainly hope that it’s a positive force in your daughter’s growth.

You’ll wonder if Circle City Volleyball Club is worth it... By Chris Rehme WHEN... • You spend the first beautiful weekend of spring in a run down gym. • Your car’s warranty expires on your third trip to Capitol Sports Center that week. • You watch your daughter serve game point into the net after spending hundreds of dollars on club fees and private lessons. • You watch your daughter cry at the end of the bench. • The majority of your daughter’s homework is done on I-465 to & from practice. • You’ve fed more quarters into the washing machine at a Louisville all-night Laundromat than into the slot machine on the riverboat across the river. • You suffer eyestrain looking to see if that special college coach saw your daughter’s great kill. • You contemplate suicide when that same special college coach arrives at the court just in time to see your daughter hit a perfect set into the net. • The coach that ‘seemed’ to be so knowledgeable benches your daughter during their most important match.

BUT THEN... • You learn more about your daughter’s hopes and aspirations on I-465 at 10:00pm than you have for the past 17 years. • Your daughter gets email from friends all over the country that she met at a volleyball tournament. • Your daughter’s grades go up because now she has to plan her homework and can’t put it off. • Your daughter runs up, hugs you after a big game and doesn’t say a word. • You see the 18’s parents looking like lost puppies when they’ve watched their last Circle City match. • That special college coach sees your daughter hit a perfect slide and smiles. • Your daughter goes to college and feels a little more comfortable when she runs into a girl she met at Nationals in June. • You’re sitting at the hotel before the last game at Nationals reminiscing about the last 4 years you’ve spent together. • Your daughter has played her last game and is crying; she’s hugging teammates and coaches with whom she’ll be friends for life. YOU’LL KNOW IT WAS WORTH IT!!!

Players who miss an event that their team attends will still be responsible for their share of the entry fee. These will be due January 10th. Tournament Expenses: Costs for lodging, if attending a tournament requiring overnight travel, are billed as required. The coach’s travel and hotel expenses are in addition to team fees. Transportation: Travel to tournaments is not covered.

Expense Account Billings Any cost incurred by a player that is not covered in the Circle City Volleyball Club fees will be charged to her expense account. Each player has such an account. At the end of each month, expenses for that month will be billed. This monthly billing will spread the cost of participation across the season and lessen the chances of a very large bill at the end of the season. Participants must remember that going to a major end of the season event such as the USAV Junior Nationals will add a substantial charge all at once at the end of the season. For large, multi-day events, Circle City Volleyball Club may pre-bill participants for the estimated expenses. Those not covering their expenses may not be allowed to participate in the event.

Sponsorships If you have a possible sponsor, please contact Scott McQueen for information. There are some minimum standards for team sponsorships, and he will be glad to tell you about them. Checks should not be made payable to the participant, they must be payable to: Circle City Volleyball Club.

Bad Weather Cancellation Policy In the occurrence of bad weather, participants can make the following assumptions: 1. Practices at Capitol Sports Center will rarely be canceled. “If you can make it, we will practice” will typically be the philosophy. If people cannot make it, their absence will be understood. If a Capitol Sports Center practice is cancelled, players will be notified directly by telephone. 2. Tournaments rarely get cancelled. 3. When in doubt, contact Capitol Sports Center to get the updated information.

CIRCLE CITY VOLLEYBALL CLUB

USAV Membership If you are a junior player: You must join the Hoosier Region via one of our sanctioned junior clubs. For details, contact a club you are interested in joining. Typically, a club will include your Hoosier Region member registration fee as part of its club fee. The parent/guardian needs to be present during the on-line registration for a junior player that has not reached 18 years of age as the parent information is part of the electronic signature process 2013-2014 On-Line Registration Instructions Please print out or read through these instructions as a guide to your membership registration. If you need assistance to complete your registration successfully contact the Hoosier Region office using the contact information at the end of this document. Please note these important items before starting your registration: • All registrations must be entered on line for the upcoming season. The process uses an electronic signature system which is explained as you move through the screens entering your information. • You will need your driver’s license or state identification card and your social security number to complete your registration. • You must now be a parent or guardian in order to successfully enter a junior (under the legal age of 18) membership registration. The junior registration electronic signature process includes private secured parent/guardian information that is a mandatory part of that process. Club representatives or coaches may no longer register their teams or clubs as a group for that reason. • If you were registered with any USAV affiliated region other than the Hoosier Region last season please contact the Hoosier Region office prior to starting your registration. You will need to provide the name of the Region in which you were last registered so it can be changed in the system in order to proceed. The Region office contact information is at the end of this document. At the time of registration choose UNDECIDED in the Club drop down box unless you are 100% sure that your child will be accepted to a particular club. Once your child has been officially accepted to a club you may login in again later and change this area to the correct club affiliation. This function is available only one time when UNDECIDED is selected. After that you will have to contact the Region Office to make any changes to the club affiliation.
