WHO WE ARE, WHAT WE OFFER The International Office is a division of the Office of Student Affairs „Dezernat für Studienangelegenheiten (Dezer-nat II)“. We provide various services for the following target groups within the university:

1. Students 1. Outgoing students Advice on the opportunities for and financing of a study abroad period for Mannheim students. 2. Incoming students Advice and support for international students, exchange students, and also full-time students.

2. International Researchers The International Office’s Welcome Centre supports international researchers in the preparation and realisation of their stay in Mannheim. Here are some examples of the services we offer: 1. Arrival and entry formalities 2. Finding accommodation 3. Support for researchers’ partners and children 4. Formalities and governmental procedures in Germany 5. Social and language-related networking 6. Assistance with questions concerning depar- ture from Mannheim

3. Schools The International Office works closely with the international departmental coordinators in the implementation of strategic planning and also provides support in various areas, including: 1. Forming cooperation contracts with partner universities 2. Developing and establishing joint or double degree programs 3. Developing and establishing study abroad programs that are integrated into a course of study 4. Opportunities for researchers to complete a stay abroad and their possibilities of financial support (for example ERASMUS Teaching Mo bility) 5. Information about international support pro grams and proposals 6. Support with the selection of incoming and outgoing students

4. Rector’s Office The International Office is responsible for the implementation of the internationalisation strategy conceived by the rectorate. We provide support for the organisation and supervision of international visitors’ groups as well as for foreign travel arrangements of the university’s rector.

WER WIR SIND, WAS WIR BIETEN Das Akademische Auslandsamt ist eine Abteilung des Dezernats für Studienangelegenheiten (Dezernat II) und bietet vielfältige Serviceangebote für folgende Zielgruppen: 1. Studierende 1. Outgoing-Studierende Beratung zu Möglichkeiten und Finanzierung eines studienbedingten Auslandsaufenthaltes für Mannheimer Studierende 2. Incoming-Studierende Beratung und Betreuung für internationale Studierende, sowohl Austausch- als auch Voll zeitstudierende

Ausländische Gastwissenschaftler Das Welcome Centre des Akademischen Auslandsamts unterstützt international mobile Wissenschaftler in der Vorbereitung und Durchführung ihres Aufenthalts in Mannheim. Das Angebot umfasst beispielsweise: 1. An- und Einreiseformalitäten 2. Wohnraumbeschaffung 3. Partner- und Kinderbetreuungsfragen 4. Formalitäten und Behördengänge vor Ort 5. Soziale und sprachliche Anbindung 6. Abreisefragen

3. Fakultäten In enger Kooperation mit den an den Dekanaten angesiedelten Auslandsbeauftragten der Fakultäten plant und setzt das Akademische Auslandsamt strategische Überlegungen um bzw. steht beratend zu beispielsweise folgenden Themen zur Seite 1. Gestaltung von Kooperationsverträgen mit Partneruniversitäten 2. Entwicklung und Einführung von Joint oder Double Degrees 3. Entwicklung und Einführung von im Studien- plan integrierten Auslandsaufenthalten 4. Möglichkeiten von Auslandsaufenthalten von Wissenschaftlern sowie deren Finanzierung (z.B.ERASMUS-Dozentenmobilität) 5. Information über internationale Förderpro gramme und -ausschreibungen 6. Unterstützung bei Auswahl von Incoming und Outgoing-Studierenden 4. Rektorat Das Akademische Auslandsamt ist für die Umsetzung der Internationalisierungsstrategie der Hochschulleitung zuständig, unterstützt bei der Organisation und Betreuung von internationalen Besuchergruppen sowie Auslandsreisen des Rektors.

Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD) 2. National and international research institutions and scholarship foundations (for example DAAD, Fulbright, Humboldt Foundation, the Baden-Württemberg State Foundation, private foundations) 3. Ministries of Science, Research, and Art in BadenWürttemberg 4. Community and regional institutions and government agencies (for example the city of Mannheim, the RhineNeckar region, embassies, consulates, etc.) 5. Partner universities

WER WIR SIND, WAS WIR BIETEN 5. Extern Weiterhin ist das Akademische Auslandsamt Ansprechpartner und zentraler Vermittler zu universitätsinternen Stellen für folgende externe Zielgruppen: 1. Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) 2. Nationale und internationale Wissenschaftsinstitutionen und Stipendiengeber (z.B. DAAD, Fulbright-Kommission, Humboldt-Stiftung, Landesstiftung Baden-Württemberg, private Stiftungen) 3. Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg 4. Kommunale und regionale Institutionen und Behörden (z.B. Stadt Mannheim, Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar, Botschaften, Konsulate etc.) 5. Partneruniversitäten

INTERNATIONAL FACTS AND FIGURES: AN OVERVIEW (as of January 2011) 1. Only university in Germany with international semester schedules

9. A high number of courses offered in English in all areas of study. This increases the attractiveness of Mannheim’s course offerings for exchange students, who are therefore able to complete a majority of their stay abroad in the English language.

STRATEGIC GOALS OF THE UNIVERSITY 1. To enable a study abroad period for Mannheim students of all levels of education and the recognition of courses completed while abroad 2. To expand “Internationalisation@Home”, the amount of courses offered in English and the active integration of international students and researchers 3. To receive consistent confirmation of our high standards of education through international accreditations such as AACSB, EQUIS, or AMBA. 4. To increase international research cooperation 5. To provide high-value service for international students and researchers, for example through the Welcome Centre, professional international departmental coordinators in the schools who work closely with the International Office, English-speaking administrative personnel, and online service and information resources.

STRATEGISCHE ZIELE 1. Ermöglichung eines Auslandsaufenthaltes für Mannheimer Studierende auf allen Ausbildungsebenen inklusive vollständiger Anrechung der im Ausland erbrachten Studienleistungen 2. Ausweitung der „Internationalisation@Home“, d.h. umfassendes englischsprachiges Lehrangebot und Nutzung des Potentials internationaler Studierender und Wissenschaftler durch aktive Integration 3. Regelmäßige Bestätigung hoher Qualitätsstandards durch internationale (Re-)Akkreditierungen, wie etwa AACSB, EQUIS oder AMBA 4. Steigerung von internationalen Forschungskooperationen 5. Hochwertiger Service für internationale Studierende und Wissenschaftler, etwa durch die Unterstützung durch das Welcome Centre, professionelle Auslandsbeauftragte an den Fakultäten, die mit dem Akademischen Auslandsamt eng kooperieren und englischsprachigem Verwaltungspersonal sowie (onlinebasierten) Service- und Informationsangeboten.

HOW CAN YOU CONTRIBUTE TO INTERNATIONALISATION? 1. Take advantage of existing contacts with foreign colleagues in order to facilitate or expand new partnerships in teaching and research 2. Use your time during a stay abroad to establish new international contacts or to tend to already existing relationships 3. Offer courses in English to support “Internationalisation@Home” and to further improve the integration of international students 4. Remain open and actively supportive for the special advisory needs of international students 5. Participate in the selection of international students (for example as part of a selection committee) 6. Engage yourself in enabling a study abroad period for Mannheim students (for example by enabling the full recognition of courses completed while abroad) as well as in recruiting and supporting young international talents 7. Initiate and develop international programs such as summer schools and English-spoken courses of study

8. Create sources of information (especially online) also in English 9. Cooperate closely with international departmental coordinators who are in direct contact with the International Office 10. Forward any information concerning international contacts or partnerships (also research projects) to the International Office

WIE KÖNNEN SIE ZUR INTERNATIONALISIERUNG BEITRAGEN ? 1. Bereits bestehende Kontakte zu ausländischen Kollegen nutzen, um neue Kooperationen im Bereich der Lehre und Forschung zu ermöglichen oder auszubauen

8. Erstellung jeglicher Informationsangebote (insbesondere auf Webseiten) immer auch in englischer Sprache

2. Auslandsaufenthalte für die Pflege internationaler Kontakte nutzen bzw. neue initiieren

9. Enge Kooperation mit Auslandsbeauftragten der Fakultät, die wiederum in direktem Kontakt mit dem Akademischen Auslandsamt stehen

3. Angebot englischsprachiger Lehrveranstaltungen zur Förderung der „Internationalisation@Home“ aber auch zur besseren Integration des internationalen Nachwuchses

10. Informationen zu internationalen Kontakten oder Kooperationen (auch Forschungsprojekte) an das Akademische Auslandsamt weiterleiten

4. Offenheit für und aktive Unterstützung des besonderen Betreuungsbedarfs internationaler Studierender 5. Engagement bei der Auswahl internationaler Studierender (etwa in einer Auswahlkommission) 6. Engagement für die Ermöglichung eines studienbedingten Auslandsaufenthaltes von Mannheimer Studierenden (etwa volle Anrechung der im Ausland erbrachten Studienleistungen) sowie für die Anwerbung und Förderung internationalen Nachwuchses 7. Initiierung und Durchführung internationaler Programme (z.B. Summer Schools, englischsprachige Studiengänge)
