1. Introduction In the first half of 2006, the Federal Ministry of Defence (MoD) in co-operation with the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Cultural Affairs, the Austrian Federal Office for the Care of Monuments and the Austrian Society for the Protection of Cultural Property, hosts an International Workshop on the Protection of Cultural Property in Peace Support Operations. In this workshop the current situation of the protection of cultural property in Peace Support Operations will be presented and discussed. The objective of the workshop is to elaborate a paper on the principles of protecting cultural property in Peace Support Operations. Its aim is to sensitise the political and military decision-makers in charge of planning and conducting such operations, so that in the future all matters pertaining to the protection of cultural property receive adequate consideration in the preparation and planning phases, as well as in the execution phase in the area of operations.

2. Workshop Management The workshop will be organised in Bregenz and Feldkirch, Vorarlberg Province, by the Federal Ministry of Defence, Joint Command and Control Staff, Vienna in co-operation with the Vorarlberg Provincial Military Command. 3. Workshop Programme In the plenary sessions only food-for-thought presentations will be given while the majority of the discussions and presentations will be held in syndicates.
