International Opportunities a guide for students

Welcome It is becoming increasingly important for UK home students to undertake an outward student mobility placement either at an Erasmus+ or an International Exchange partner university, in order to compete in the increasingly competitive global job market. This was discussed in the recently published UK Strategy for Outward Mobility, presented by the UK HE International Unit: ‘The UK still needs to stimulate and facilitate participation in outward mobility so that our students and institutions can continue to compete in a global market.’ While the UK student outward mobility numbers have increased in the recent years, the UK still ranks behind countries such as Germany, France, Spain and Italy. This is why it has become a national agenda for the UK Government to inform their home students about the great benefits which a placement abroad can provide them with. Undertaking a placement abroad can develop a student’s cultural awareness, life adaptation and language skills, among many other factors – all contributing to a skill-set which is very attractive to employers. Bath Spa University wants to recognise and engage with the UK’s National Agenda for student outward mobility. This is reflected in our Internationalisation strategy for 2020 which aims ‘to integrate the University into an internationalised world and produce students who are internationally connected global citizens.’ Because we believe that undertaking a placement is of great benefit to a student’s personal development and looks absolutely fantastic on a graduate CV, the International Relations Office is very keen to promote these opportunities among our home students. We hope that you will find some useful information in this guide which will help you through the initial steps of deciding what type of placement – Erasmus+ or International Exchange – is for you, and how to apply for one. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us! For Erasmus+ enquiries please email [email protected] For International Exchange enquiries please email [email protected]

ERASMUS+ Funded by the European Commission, Erasmus+ offers students study mobility programmes with a wide range of universities in Europe. Students may undertake one semester mobility programmes during their second year of study at Bath Spa University to one of the 25 current Erasmus+ partner universities. We are actively seeking to extend the partnerships, so the list of partners and courses available may increase throughout the year. Most classes are taught in English, with the opportunity to learn the local language in a separate class, often provided by the host university. Interested students will need to ensure that the institution they are applying to, has subjects and courses that correspond to their Degree at Bath Spa University. Students should use these web pages as a starting point for their research: www.bathspa.ac.uk/university-life/outgoinginternational-exchanges Students participating in the Erasmus+ scheme will be enhancing their life experience in preparation for becoming global citizens. Erasmus+ students are eligible for a grant (issued by the British Council) to help support the cost of living in a different country. The grant amounts listed in this booklet is based on the 2014/15 figures. Erasmus+ students need to pass the programme of their study placement in order to achieve 30 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits for one semester. If successfully passed, this will equate to 60 BSU credits. The remaining 60 BSU credits which the student will complete in the first or second semester of their second year at Bath Spa, will be graded.

The University of Southern Denmark is a modern institution offering education and research at the highest level. Modern facilities in the form of reading rooms, laboratories, Friday bars, libraries, meeting places and cosy corners help to make life at university a happy experience!

Roskilde University, a public university, was founded in 1972 with the objective of providing research and education at the highest level in the fields of natural science, social science and the humanities. In its short history, Roskilde University has in many ways broken with traditional educational thinking and practice in Denmark. ** The university has limited housing reserved for Erasmus+ students, assigned on a first come-first served basis. The majority of international students find self-catered apartments in the Roskilde or outlying Copenhagen area.

Founded in 1993, the university is named after Otto von Guericke (1602-1686), Magdeburg‘s famous son. He was a politician, a scholar and eventually the mayor of the town. With over 14,200 students coming from 90 countries, OVGU is becoming increasingly important as the centre of education and research in Central Germany and beyond.

How did you find settling into a foreign environment? Was the language a barrier? I quickly settled into the environment as Maastricht is a very friendly small city. There was no language barrier, the dutch happily would converse in English and were extremely fluent.

What was the most difficult part of the process and how did you resolve it? The most difficult part of the exchange was probably adapting to the different educational system. This required you to become much more independent in studying, which was difficult but very helpful process.

How do you think the placement helped you with your future studies/ skill building/career? The placement has benefited me no end. Since returning from exchange countless friends and family have commented on my growth in confidence which reflects the personal positives. As for career wise it has made me think much more globally when considering career prospects, I often think of potentially returning to work at my exchange university!

What advice would you give to students who are thinking of applying for an Exchange placement? Do it!!

Did you find the idea of a placement abroad daunting? Initially I was scared about going away to another country for 5 months, but leaving your comfort zone and living in a completely new place with new people is extremely rewarding.

What was your overall experience of the placement? Studying abroad at a different university is fascinating, as you learn alongside people from all over the world, and gain an understanding of the cultural differences in education. Additionally, the social life is amazing. You will make loads of new friends, go to lots of parties and always have someone to meet up and chat with.

How easy or hard was it to meet new people and make friends abroad? The people who go on Erasmus placements tend to be open-minded, interesting and adventurous, so there is a good chance you will make some friends for life. I enjoyed Erasmus so much I ended up staying in Spain for an extra month, working as an au-pair and in a summer camp.

Did you find the language to be a barrier? The language barrier can be challenging, but to be honest it doesn’t matter if you aren’t at all fluent because it’s good fun. My Spanish/Catalan was never great but it meant that I learnt to laugh at myself, and I have some funny awkward stories. However, because you’re exposed to a new language so much, the chances are you will pick it up quite easily.

How do you think the placement helped you with your future studies/skill building/career? The Erasmus placement was very beneficial to my career. I am studying to become a primary school teacher, and I was able to take part in a 3 month placement in a Catalan school, where I even planned and taught my own lessons. I also had a job as a nanny, and then worked in a summer camp teaching English. Erasmus provides lots of opportunities in terms of careers. Even if you don’t work during your time abroad, the fact that you take part in it alone looks good on a CV, as it shows that you are outgoing and enterprising.

friends that I am currently arranging to meet up with again this summer!

Emma d'arcy / BA (hons) English literature University of Stockholm, Sweden

What was the overall experience of your placement?

What was the most difficult part of the process and how did you resolve it?

Fantastic! I'm so, so glad I did it, and I'm dying to go back to Stockholm for a holiday and revisit all my favourite places. I'm quite introverted, so making friends was difficult for me because I'm not very good at putting myself out there. But because I had I had a room-mate I never felt lonely. She had a lot of friends, so I was always able to go out with them if I wanted. I'd advise going with a room-mate if possible just so you can make an immediate friend (it's also cheaper). Stockholm's a lovely city to explore on your own though - there are quite a lot of museums and galleries that are free or discounted for under 25's, and the whole city is so beautiful that you can just go walking and be enchanted.

Transport was hard to get the hang of at first. Stockholm doesn't have an Oyster card system like London - you buy a card and top it up to cover a set period of time instead of having the cost of each journey deducted. It took a few days to figure out exactly what I needed to do.

How did you find settling into a foreign environment? Was the language a barrier? It didn't really feel that foreign to me - the university environment was really the same as at home, with people perhaps a little more academically driven, and everyone spoke excellent English, including all the other foreign students, who used it as their primary communications language. There were Swedish lessons, but the classes were so huge that if you couldn't keep up, you were left behind. But it wasn't a problem, since I never needed much Swedish to get by easily in the city. Knowing how to say please and thank you are the most important things.

How do you think the placement helped you with your future studies/skill building/career? It's definitely made me more open to the idea of working in a different country, though I think that would be a lot harder than just studying in a different country. I read a lot more for the English Lit course in Stockholm than I was expected to read at Bath Spa, though that could just be a difference between the courses I was taking there and at home.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking of applying for an Erasmus placement? Research the place you're going to a little bit before you go there. Figure out what you're going to do about public transport, money withdrawal and shopping. When I went to Stockholm, the flat I was sharing was completely bare, so my room-mate and I had to go shopping for things like kitchen equipment and bedding as well as food. Join the Facebook pages of the building or the Erasmus community there, ahead of time so you can find out whether you can get stuff like that cheaper, if you're going to need it.

International

Exchange While Bath Spa University has Erasmus+ partners all across Europe, we also have a number of partners throughout the rest of the world. Students in their second year can take full advantage of the global study opportunities available in Australia, China, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan and the USA. Studying on the Exchange programme is a fantastic opportunity for students to experience education in a different country, immerse themselves in a new culture and learn a new language or improve any existing foreign language skills. It also looks great on the student’s CV and will help their employability opportunities in the global market. The Exchange will take place in the student’s second year of study. On completion of the exchange, students will return to Bath Spa University with the equivalent credits they would have achieved if they had stayed in the UK which will count towards their degree. Students need to successfully pass their exchange assessments but they are not graded while they are studying abroad. Students must complete a minimum of 60 Bath Spa credits per semester (30 ECTS). The programme of study at our partner institution must follow the same subject as at Bath Spa University and students must be achieving a minimum of 2:1 overall in their first year of study. Students will also need approval from their School International Coordinator. To find out who this is, please email [email protected]. While most of the classes are taught in English, there will be an expectation of some knowledge of the local language in some countries e.g. Japan and Mexico. Most of our partners teach in English with the opportunity for students to learn a new language in their host country.

Student story charlotte taylor

BA (Hons) Business and Management

What was your overall experience of your placement? Very valuable, amazing, best thing I have ever done! Being away from my family and friends was hard at times, however I made lots of friends out there from all over the world who I still stay in touch with. It gave me an insight into how other universities work which I think is really valuable. Lots of universities work in different ways. The university was very welcoming and the orientation programme as well as other events throughout my time there were very good.

How did you find settling into a foreign environment? Was the language a barrier? I decided to go to Sydney because there wasn‘t a language barrier! It was very different to living and studying in Bath. Suddenly I was in a very dynamic and multicultural city living in China town. It was quite daunting living in a city centre, however it was lots of fun and good to experience living in a different country.

What was the most difficult part of the process and how did you resolve it? Being so far away from my close family and friends was hard, however Skype helped me a lot. The time difference also became very challenging however I just had to arrange times to speak and it was ok. I thought the visa process and medical insurance was going to be a lengthly, tough process but it was very easy and only took 24 hours to process.

31

‚‚ ... Very valuable,

amazing, best thing I have ever done!

How do you think the placement helped you with your future studies/skill building/career? Great for my CV. I was able to have something different which is quite important I think in the job market. The different modules I undertook also helped me for my final year back at Bath Spa. I also managed to get a job out there which was really good as I was able to see what the working enivornment was like as well. Going to Sydney was good for my confidence as you are esentially‚ in the deep end travelling accross the world to study.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking of applying for an Exchange placement? Do it!! Make sure you do lots of travelling whilst you are there and really get stuck in and take all opportunities available! Attend all the orientation programmes so you get to know people as soon as possible. Apply early to make sure you get the best choice of places to go as well!

What are your happiest memories and biggest benefits from your placement? • • • •

Travelling all around Australia and New Zealand. Making friends for life. Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Making my CV a bit different to everyone else‘s.

from all over the World and get some good business connections Sam walker / Bsc (hons) business and Management & geography / CUC, china

What was your overall experience of your placement? Studying abroad in China has been one of the best experiences I’ve been lucky enough to have. That’s not to say there weren’t a few bumps along the way but overall, studying in Beijing was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It was so different to anything I’d done before and because of that I adored the experience. The culture, the city, the people; it was all just amazing...

How did you find settling into a foreign environment? Was the language a barrier? To an extent, I think wherever you go there are likely to be differences in the customs and culture of a country, however, I never really struggled to adapt to them. As soon as I’d arrived the university provided a lot of orientation lectures to help students adapt. After a week of those, I was happy to go out and explore on my own. You can get to almost anywhere via the subway and it was so easy to use for tourists (and cheap). The majority of people on campus spoke English and gave a lot of good advice as to what to see and where to go. Moving around the city there are fewer people who can speak English fluently, however - it was never an issue as most signs are written in English.

What was the most difficult part of the process and how did you resolve it? I like to be organized and prepared, but finding information about living in Beijing from a westerner’s perspective wasn’t so easy... I was able to get in contact with other students already studying at CUC through a page created on Facebook (even though Facebook is banned in China). It was great to be able to ask questions about the cost of living, major differences in culture and enabled me to prepare for the experience more. It mostly helped in planning my budget as I really didn’t have much of an idea of how much everything would cost. It helped that the university provided me with a checklist of all the things I needed to do; how to apply for visas, that sort of thing.

How do you think the placement helped you with your future studies/skill building/career? You make friends from all over the world so it’s amazing for networking. It’s also a good excuse to travel, often with accommodation free! I’ve also made some good business connections in China, good because China has a very large, growing economy and the market is always looking for English speakers.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking of applying for an Exchange placement? DO IT! It was the best experience I’ve ever had and almost anyone you ask is likely to say the same. I think at first the whole process can seem a little daunting because you don’t know what the application process entails. However, I was provided with a checklist and anytime I had a question I just sent an email. A lot of people are usually put off by the cost (I was too!). So have a look at the scholarships available at Bath Spa. I studied abroad as part of the Global Citizenship Award but there’s also the International Travel Fund. Student Finance also give you money back but they keep that quiet, so make sure you ask them!

What are your happiest memories and biggest benefits from your placement? There were so many incredible moments during my time in Beijing. One of my favourites was the Great Wall of China; it’s incredible to see and only an hour’s drive from Beijing. After travelling there with my friends we were told by the locals that you’re only considered a “true warrior” if you hike up to the wall. So my friends and I had an intense trek to the top in 35°C heat. It was completely worth it though and once we got to the top the views were breathtaking. I have numerous other memories from the whole experience, it was all just incredible. I loved going to Beijing not really knowing anyone but coming back with such a diverse group of friends. Diverse in that these people came from different countries and cultures, scattered across the world. It was amazing listening to their experiences and sharing new ones in Beijing. It really enhanced my experience abroad.

‚‚ ... settling in a non-

English speaking country opened my eyes to another side of the world. Sirunyu Thongmee / Ba (hons) Contemporary Arts practice / Seian university, japan

An academic exchange program at Seian University of Art & Design, Japan. I really do not want to believe that now my study exchange program is over. It has been an unforgettable experience for me to have a great opportunity studying in one of the world's most wonderful countries, Japan. I still remember the day that I decided to apply for an exchange placement in Japan. It was exciting and challenging in the way that this would be my first time to live in a nonEnglish speaking country. As an international student studying here in the UK, I still think English is difficult. Therefore, I do not need to mention anything about my Japanese language ability. I have always had a keen interest in East Asian art, especially in Japanese traditional art and that is the reason why I will never let language become my biggest issue stopping me from going there. And settling in a non-English speaking country would open my eyes to another side of the world and there are many chances of doing great things out there, who knows. 2nd September 2014, the day that I stood in Shiga prefecture (where I decided to take a placement), Japan. The smell of fresh air, the beautiful scenery of lake Biwako (‘The largest freshwater lake in Japan, located in the central of Shiga prefecture’) and the quiet and natural environment told me that finally, I successfully became an exchange student and the most wonderful things were waiting for me in the next months. How exciting that was. Before boarding, what begins to concern me the most was language, what should I do if I cannot communicate with others, no friends, no food, no part-time jobs etc. I really have to say thank you so much to Seian University for making all those worries disappear. Everything was ready for me when I arrived. Moreover, Japanese people are friendly and willing to help you even if they are

unable to speak English. Everything that I have learnt from the university, Japan and what I have gained from this placement is priceless. Knowledge that you cannot acquire from elsewhere, friendships that will last with you, and memory that cannot be forgotten, are in this placement and I would say that I am more than happy deciding to join the study exchange program. The only thing that I would like say to the students who are thinking of applying to this program is to go for it. Don’t worry or be scared because I am sure that the most valuable experiences are waiting for you out there.

How did you find settling into a foreign environment? The environment was amazing. The campus was beautiful and rather large in comparison to our campus. It was cold with the snow but that only made it more fun :)

What was the most difficult part of the process and how did you resolve it? Having to share a room with another person was difficult as I have never done this before and being in another country with a stranger in the room with me was difficult. I spoke to the staff and they were amazing to deal with. They catered to every need that I had and any worries I had they helped me with really fast and solved every problem that I had.

How do you think the placement helped you with your future studies/skill building/career? The placement will undoubtedly help me with my future studies and more throughout life. I am going to use the skills that I have gained and knowledge that I have taken from my placement and use it within my dissertation. I have met many different people that again will be great help for my future with references and more.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking of applying for an Exchange placement? DOOO IT !!!!!! You‘ll absolutely 100% not regret your decision. It‘s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be able to attend a university in another country and see the difference in cultures and how people learn. Never doubt yourself. You may be scared but trust me it‘s an amazing opportunity and you‘ll appreciate getting this chance.

What are your happiest memories and biggest benefits from your placement? My happiest memories are everything!!! From day one I have memories all the way to the very last day. I loved meeting people from different countries and making friends from all over the world. Accommodation arrangements at Bath Spa University Students seriously considering a semester abroad will need to think carefully about their accommodation requirements for their time at Bath Spa University. Most contract lengths will be year long and if students are going to be on a study mobility placement, they may find themselves tied into a contract and paying for a room they do not need. The Bath Spa University Accommodation office may be able to offer students on-campus accommodation for one semester but these on-campus opportunities are limited. For more information, please email [email protected]

Accommodation at Host University Accommodation at the host destination will be arranged through the host university with options of on-campus and off-campus living. Each university is slightly different e.g. city and campus based universities and accommodation options will be made available once a placement has been offered. It is quite usual that students will find themselves sharing bedrooms and bathrooms with other students in accommodation outside of Bath Spa University, with dormitory style living. Students will normally be matched with likeminded roommates as closely as possible to ensure optimum student experience.

finance Student Finance England Exchange and Erasmus+ students Students receiving a maintenance grant are advised to inform Student Finance England of their change in circumstances if they have confirmation of their study mobility placement. SFE will usually adapt the loan to reflect and support opportunities to study abroad by potentially increasing loans. Students are advised to inform SFE at the earliest opportunity, once a placement has been offered, to ensure enough time to enable changes. www.gov.uk/travel-grants-students-england/overview

SFE Travel Grant Students on either Erasmus+ or Exchange programmes are eligible to apply for the SFE Travel Grant. This entitles students to claim reimbursement for travel costs, insurance and visa costs above £303. Students will incur the first £303 charge. This will be a relief to students who may have large flight fares to pay.

Bath Spa University International Mobility Fund International Exchange students The Bath Spa International Travel Fund is primarily for students who are going on a mobility placement (either study or research) for longer than 2-3 months and it can be evidenced the impact the placement will make on the student's experience, but also on the area they are visiting. https://www.bathspa.ac.uk/studywithus/ undergraduate/feesandfinance/alumni

o Erasmus+ Student Mobility Grant All students who participate in the Erasmus+ programme receive an Erasmus+ mobility grant. This grant is a lump sum allocation of money from the European Commission intended to contribute towards the extra costs arising from studying abroad. Your grant is nonrepayable, and is paid to you through Bath Spa University by the Erasmus+ National Agency for the UK (the British Council). The Erasmus+ grant is intended to offset only the additional expenses you may incur while you are abroad you should not depend on it to cover your essential living costs. The Erasmus+ grant does not replace the standard student loans or grants to which you are entitled. If you normally receive a maintenance loan, maintenance grant or Bath Spa University bursary, you should continue to apply for these in the normal way

CERTIFICATE IN GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP (GC) The Erasmus+ or International Exchange placement counts towards the GC, available to all Home and EU students. Home and EU students accepted on the CGC are eligible for a scholarship of £1,000 to help fund the international placement.
