01 Poland: A Fascinating Country to Explore  Poland, officially the Republic of Poland, is a country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the West, Czech Republic and Slovakia to the South and Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Kaliningrad Oblast to the East. Poland’s north border is lined by the 528-kilometer coast of The Baltic Sea.

 Poland has been a member of NATO since 1999, the European Union since 2004 and, in 2007, Poland joined the Schengen Area.

Poland has also one of Europe’s youngest populations – half of its citizens are less than 35 years old. Out of nearly 39 milion Poles almost 2 milion are the  Poland’s history is more than a thousand years university students. of complicated and grand times with outstanding people who have contributed to the history and  Polish academic traditions date back to the 14th the history of the world. Polish cities with a thousand-year history invite visitors to encounter their unique beauty and charm. Poland’s villages and small towns offer the opportunity to get away from the bustle of modern life, but Poland’s greatest attraction is her nature: wild, often untouched, and more diverse than in most countries in Europe and around the world. You can find more or less everything here: alpine mountains, wide beaches, clean lakes, deep forests, internationallyrenowned historic monuments, and even a desert in southern Poland. All of that, plus friendly people, make the country very attractive for foreign guests.

CITY OF LODZ – CITY OF FOUR CULTURES 

The city of Lodz is located in the heart of Poland at a crossing point of many important European routes. In the beginning Lodz was inhabited by four nationalities. The Polish, Jewish, German and Russian inhabitants contributed to the rich and diverse cultural background of the city that the university strives to sustain. The local architecture and history attracts a great number of tourists. The history of Lodz is linked to the rapid 19th century development of the textile industry when the place was called the city of factory chimneys and the Promised Land. 

CITY OF FESTIVALS

Every year dozens of cultural events are held in Lodz. Concerts, film, music and theatre festivals attract more and more outstanding guests and tourists. The events worth recommending are:

•  Festival – Lodz of Four Culturess (www.4kultury.pl) •  Explorers Festival (www.festiwalgor.pl) •  Lodz Biennale (www.biennalelodz.pl) •  Fotofestival (www.fotofestiwal.com) •  International Festival of Comics (www.komiksfestiwal.com) •  Film Music Festival (www.kinomuzeum.pl) •  International Triennial of Tapestry (www.muzeumwlokiennictwa.pl) •  Se-ma-for – Film Festival (http://www.se-ma-for.org/)  HOLLYLODZ Lodz is the cradle of Polish cinematography and is famous for its film traditions. The Polish National Film, Television and Theatre School is invariably one of the best film schools in Europe. The most known graduates are: Krzysztof Kieślowski, Roman Polański, Krzysztof Zanussi, Jerzy Skolimowski and Andrzej Wajda. Moreover, you can learn the history of Polish cinematography in the one and only Museum of Cinematography in Poland. 

UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE

Tenement houses and great residences are now regaining their splendor. The revitalized structures have been transformed into lofts, commercial and entertainment complexes and art centers. Nowadays the complexes of the 19 th century industrial age are unique on a European scale. You will find here some of the finest examples of Classicism and Italian Neo-Renaissance, through Neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau to Neo-Gothic and Neo-Roman styles of architecture. Two of them, erected by a famous manufacturer – Karol Scheibler, are situated within the area of so called "Księży Młyn". Another complex used to belong to Scheibler’s competitor – Izrael Poznański. At present, the old Poznanski’s complex, is a shopping, leisure and culture center called "Manufaktura". Many of old, historical monuments like palaces

05 Important details 05.1. SHOPPING

05.2. CLIMATE AND CLOTHES

From Monday to Friday shopping hours are usually from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (grocery stores); other shops open at 10:00 a.m. On Saturdays many shops are open between 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. Some small local markets may be open on Sundays, too. We strongly recommend purchasing food and basic household needs in large supermarkets which are located throughout Lodz. The large chain supermarkets include Tesco, Real, E.Leclerc, and Carrefour. They are open from 8:00 a.m. till 10:00 p.m. and they offer very reasonable prices.

Some people associate Poland with the North Pole or the South Pole and amiable polar bears. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the only polar bears that we have are kept in the zoo and the legendary cold, snowy winters are not as bad as people think. The average temperature in December, January and February is -2°C. These months are normally snowy which provides splendid opportunities to go skiing in the mountains. We advise bringing heavier coats, gloves, caps and boots. March, April vary between cold and warm days with average temperatures of 12°C. After that comes a considerable warming up and the weather becomes more bearable. It is very possible to experience heat during the summer months.

A very popular place for shopping is Bałucki Rynek, a large open-air market in the northern part of Lodz where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables at very low prices. For other shopping needs, there are three major shopping malls in the city – Manufaktura, Port Lodz and Galeria Łódzka. The dress code at the university is rather informal. The average Polish student tends to dress very casually  Example of prices in Polish zloties when attending lectures, tutorials and so on. There are special occasions throughout the academic year a loaf of bread: 3 zł where it might be more appropriate to dress a bit a litre of milk: 2,50 zł more formally, but it’s not necessary. a cup of yoghurt: 1,60 zł a litre of orange juice: 5,50 zł 05.3.
