Foreword

This Quick Start Guide is intended for International Students new to Korea and new to Keimyung University. Its purpose is to make the first several days of life at Keimyung more comfortable; it is not intended to be exhaustive of the topics covered. This is the first version of the Quick Start Guide for International Students, and it is an ongoing project. The creators have made every attempt to provide accurate and useful information. The authors also hope that readers will forgive any mistakes or oversights, and provide positive criticism on ways it can be improved. This information will be uploaded to the KMU homepage in the very near future. We all wish you the best of luck during your time at Keimyung University and hope you enjoy your new life in Korea. December, 2014

Welcome to Korea!

Korea has four distinct seasons.

Spring and autumn are rather short, summer is hot and

humid, and winter is cold and dry with abundant snowfall, especially in the mountainous regions, but not along the southern coast. Temperatures differ widely from region to region within Korea, with the average being between 10°C (50°F) and 16°C (61°F). In early spring, Siberian winds pick up "yellow dust" from thawing deserts in northern China and carry it to the peninsula and Japan.

But in mid-April, the country also enjoys balmy

weather with the mountains and fields garbed in brilliant wild flowers. Farmers prepare seedbeds for the annual rice crop at this time. Autumn, with its crisp air and crystal blue sky, is the season most widely loved by Koreans. The countryside is particularly beautiful, colored in a multitude of rustic hues. Autumn, the harvest season, features various folk festivals rooted in ancient agrarian customs. The weather in Daegu is especially hot and humid in summer and cold and dry in winter. Spring and autumn provide beautiful mild and clear days. Averageannualtemperatureisasfollows: 20° C (68°F) in the spring, 30° C (86°F) in the summer, 20° C (68°F) in the fall, 0° C (32°F) in the winter

A Brief History of Keimyung University

Early Beginnings: Founded in 1954 by an American Missionary and Local Church Leaders Keimyung University originated from Keimyung Christian College, which was founded in March 1954 by Reverend Edward Adams, an American missionary of the Northern Presbyterian Church of the U.S., and by Reverends Choi Jaehwa and Kang Ingu, two local Presbyterian Church leaders. The founding principle guiding their concerted efforts was to provide Koreans with higher education firmly anchored in Christianity. The opening of the university also reflected the perceived need for higher education as a vehicle with which to reconstruct the war-ravaged nation and a means of perpetuating the time-honored spirit of the Korean people. 60 Years of Growth: A Center of High Quality Education Educational Venue for 27,000 Students in 99 majors, 68 Departments in 11 Faculties and 19 Colleges 1978, the year of Keimyung's elevation to the status of a university, marked the beginning of a new period of rapid development.

In October 1980, the university merged with the

Dongsan Presbyterian Hospital, a prestigious local hospital with an 81-year history of service, and re-opened it as Keimyung University Medical Center. The development of Keimyung acquired a new dimension in the early 1980s when it added a new campus built on 55,000 pyeong (181,500 sq. meters) at Seongseo in Sindang-dong, Dalseo-gu, to its existing Daemyung and Dongsan campuses.

As of May 2013, Keimyung

comprised of over 26,000 students and over 2,400 faculty members and employees in 99 majors, 68 departments in 11 faculties and 19 colleges, 13 graduate schools, 34 attached and affiliated institutes including Dongsan Medical Center and 17 affiliated research centers.

Step 1 Before Arriving in Korea 1. Passport and Visa All students must secure a student visa before coming to South Korea. The requirements for the student visa are not completely the same for all nationalities so it is important to check with the Korean embassy in your country. When you are staying in South Korea for more than 90 days, you also need to apply for an Alien Registration Card. The International Office will help you with this procedure. What you need: The Keimyung International Office has already started the visa procedure for you. You will need to meet some standard requirements: Passport and Visa  Valid Passport  Visa Application Form  Recent Certificate of School Record  Certificate of Admission  Verification of Account Balance (Proof of Sufficient Financial Means)  Visa Processing Fee (est. USD 30)

2. Insurance Papers Keimyung University wants its students to be properly insured so health insurance coverage is mandated by the University. The insurance must cover all costs related to treatment of illnesses, injury and death caused by accidents, and/or disasters during your stay in Korea. The proof of insurance should include your name and coverage in English. KMU is not responsible for any personal accident, disease or damage during your stay. Note: You are requested to submit a copy of your insurance information to us on the orientation day. 3. Medical Certificate All students who live at the dormitory are requested to undergo a medical examination (Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Hepatitis B tests) at a medical center designated by KMU during the first week of the semester. The cost of the examination will be shouldered by the student (estimated cost 15,000 Won = $15). Please notify the International Office if you have a documented medical condition (Pulmonary Tuberculosis and Hepatitis B), which necessitates living off-campus, so we can help find accommodation for you.

4. Your budget On average, a student living in South Korea for a semester needs between USD 2,200USD 2,500. You will need Korean Won with you upon arrival in Korea. You will need some Korean currency with you upon arrival in Korea. Here is a basic guide for the first two weeks of living in Daegu. 5. Before Departure Checklist ☐ Valid passport including visa ☐ Arrange Insurance ☐ Proof of sufficient financial means (for visa purposes) ☐ Arrangement of Accommodation ☐ Book your travel ticket ☐ Inform the KMU International Office and your buddy at Keimyung University of your arrival date and time (Tell your buddy when you arrive, and how to recognize and contact you upon arrival. The buddy contact information will be informed you a month prior to the beginning of the semester.). 6. What to bring: Bring along some of the things you feel you can’t do without or know you will miss. Even if they are available here, you might not find them right away and this way you know you’ll have a supply, at least for a while. Of course this may vary depending on your personal needs. - Food: If you have any special dietary needs, bring your own supplies. - Medicine: If possible, bring a semester’s supply of any prescription drugs you are taking. It’s also a good idea to bring some first aid supplies. You may find that medicines in Korea will have different names or brands to the ones you use back home. If you are used to a specific brand of multi-vitamins bring your own as well. - Electronics: If you bring electronics from home, remember, the voltage in Korea is 220 (in the US it’s 110), and the plug shapes are different. You'll need a converter or an adapter. 7. Upon Arrival Checklist: ☐ Passport with visa ☐ 1 Photo - 1 pc. (3.5cm X 4.5cm) photo size for Alien Registration Card ※ Colored photograph of face, front view, on white background, taken within past six months ☐ Sufficient funds - Dormitory fee - 20,000 won for Alien Registration Card - Extra Cash for personal needs and/or credit card ☐ Proof of Health Insurance ☐ Important Addresses and Telephone numbers (e.g. Contact details of your buddy, phone numbers of KMU international office, your Embassy etc.)

Step 2 Arriving in Korea Arriving Your point of arrival in South Korea will most likely be either Incheon International Airport or Gimhae International Airport. When you show your passport to the immigration officers, you may be asked why you have come to South Korea and also whether you have enough money to cover your costs here. You will avoid some delays if you have all your papers ready, such as your passport with visa and documents indicating your official acceptance at Keimyung University as a student.

Arrival at Incheon International Airport After you arrive at Incheon International Airport, there are three main ways to continue your journey to Daegu. Incheon Airport is well sign posted, so it will not be a problem to find the right way. 1. From Incheon Airport to Daegu by Plane All international flights arrive at Incheon International Airport (IIA) except certain flights from Japan and China. From IIA, you can either take a connecting flight to Daegu. It takes only one hour to Daegu International Airport from Incheon by plane.

2. From Incheon Airport to Daegu by Train Take a shuttle from IIA to Seoul Train Station (60-min.). The high-speed KTX train from Seoul to Daegu takes 1 hour and 40 minutes, 3 hours and 20 minutes by the Saemaeul train, and 4 hours by the Mugunghwa, the slower train. - There are two train stations in Daegu: Daegu Station, near downtown; and Dongdaegu Station, located in the eastern part of Daegu. To get from these stations to Keimyung University, see the information in the following section. - Please note that the Saemaul train and KTX only stop at Dongdaegu Station. - You can purchase a ticket at the Railroad Travel Information Center at IIA - Location: Passenger Terminal 1st floor, next to exit 7 at IIA - Business hours: 9:00∼21:00 every day - Phone: 02-3149-2973/032-741-7788 3. From Incheon Airport to Daegu by Express Bus It takes 5 hours and 30 min. to Dongdaegu Express Bus Terminal. - Location: Bus Stop No. 10C in front of the Passenger Terminal Building - Departure times: 06:40, 07:20, 07:50, 08:30, 09:00, 09:30, 10:10, 10:40, 11:20, 11:50, 12:20, 12:50, 13:30, 13:50, 14:10, 14:50, 15:40, 16:20, 17:00, 17:20, 17:40, 18:10, 18:40, 19:10, 19:20, 19:40, 20:10, 20:40, 21:10 (22:00, 22:30 late night bus) - You may purchase a bus ticket and information at the passenger terminal arrival floor by the Transportation Information counter located at exit 2, 4, 9 and 13.

Arrival at Gimhae(Busan) International Airport After your arrival at Gimhae International Airport, there are several ways to get to Daegu. 1.

By Express Bus:

The easiest option is by express bus. There is a direct bus right at the Gimhae International terminal to Dongdaegu Station. It takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes, which will cost you around approximately 8000 Won (USD 8). 2.

By Train:

The nearest train station from Gimhae International Airport is Gupo which is served by KTX and local Mugunghwa trains. It will cost you around 10,000 Won (USD10). Useful Websites: - Incheon International Airport: http://www.iiac.co.kr/eng/ -

Korail: http://info.korail.com/mbs/english/index.jsp

- Korean Air: http://www.koreanair.com/ - Asiana Airline: http://kr.flyasiana.com/C/en/main.do ※ In some case, booking reservations for express bus or train tickets may not be available from abroad. If so, you may purchase local transportation to Daegu at the

International Airport. Please make sure to arrange pick-up with your buddy so that your buddy can be ready to pick you up when you arrive in Daegu.

From Dong-Daegu to Keimyung University 1. Subway: Take the subway train in Dong-daegu subway station and take the train going to Daegok (RED LINE) and do not forget to transfer at Banwoldang Station and take the train going to Munyang (GREEN LINE) and get off at Keimyung University or Gangchang Station (see Map).

2. TAXI It is always more comfortable to take a taxi if you have a lot of baggage to carry. When you go out from the terminal you can easily take a taxi. (Taxi ranks are outside the main terminal exit to the left) Taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap in Korea. In the daytime, a taxi would cost you around 15,000 Won from Dong-Daegu to Keimyung University, depending on traffic etc. Be aware that after midnight the fare goes up. Here are a few helpful phrases that you can use. ▶ Please go to Keimyung University Seongseo Campus. 성서 계명대학교에 가주세요. Seong-seo Keimyung dae-hak-kyo-eh gaju-seh-yo. ▶ Please go to Keimyung University Seongseo Campus Dormitory. 성서 계명대학교 기숙사에 가주세요.

Buddy Program The Buddy program matches new international students with Korean students to initiate friendships and begin cultural exchanges. The program aims to minimize feelings of loneliness and isolation among international students and to help them adapt to their new life. Each semester there are welcoming and farewell parties held at the International Lounge to allow people to meet up and say their farewells until the next time they meet. As it was mentioned before in this chapter you will be supported by a buddy before, upon and after arrival in Deagu. But who are these buddies? And what can you expect from them? Buddies are Korean students currently enrolled in Keimyung University. As they have been studying at Keimyung University, they know how to go around the campus and around Daegu. And with their help, you will be able to adapt faster to this different culture. You’re buddy helps you with… - Picking you up from Daegu International Airport, Dong-Daegu or Daegu Station, Dong-Daegu Express Bus Terminal - Opening a Daegu Bank Account - Paying the Dormitory fee - Finishing Registration at Keimyung University - Getting a campus tour - Explaining how to use Keimyung University Learning Website (where you can check your classes) - Where to find specific places you’re looking for - Learning some useful Korean expressions

All in all a buddy is supposed to help you get started at your university, the city of Daegu and getting accustomed to Korean life. You can definitely ask your buddy anything related to Keimyung and your Korean life. They will also assist you with everything from A to Z in adjusting to your life at KMU and Korea. So, do not hesitate to contact your buddy anytime anywhere. Arriving at Keimyung University When you arrived at Keimyung University, your buddy will help you to go to the dormitory and find your room. You can also visit the International Office at 동영관(국제교육센터) Dong-yeong Hall (International Education Center) room 120. Alien Registration Card As said before, you will need to apply for an alien registration card for your stay longer than 90 days. Upon your arrival in Daegu, the KMU International Office will inform you about this procedure and what documents you need. You will be asked to fill up the application form. The International Office will help you with all the procedures but you may need to bring some documents such as: - Certificate of Enrollment - Passport - Application form - Application fee (USD 20) - 1 Photo taken within 6 months, (3.5cm X 4.5cm) You can find additional information at http://www.hikorea.go.kr/pt/main_en.pt under the immigration section. You can also call the immigration hotline on 1345 for any questions concerning your visa matters or any related concerns. An English service is available. The International Office will arrange a date for the immigration trip where all the new international students can apply for their alien registration card. In the case that a student could not join that trip, then he or she must apply by him or herself as soon as possible. Getting to the Immigration Office The subway is the easiest way to get to the Immigration Office. The Daegu Immigration Office is located near Dongchon Subway Station Line 1. You will need to take Line 2 and transfer to line 1 at Banwoldang. At Banwoldang take Line 1 heading to Ansim. Get off at Dongchon Station which is eight stops from Banwoldang. Go straight out of exit 1 to the big intersection and cross the street. Turn left, walk down about 100 meters and you will soon see a white building on your right just past a hospital. This is the Daegu Immigration Office. (When you get inside, turn right into an open office, take a ticket from the machine, take a seat and wait for your turn.)

Student ID card and Bank Account Registration The International Office will issue you the student ID card within first two weeks of the semester. If you need to open a savings account, please visit the Daegu Bank located at East Gate. As the form is usually in Korean, your buddy will help you to fill out the form. Here are the basic requirements you need: - A copy of your passport - Application form You can get the application form from the Bank or at the International office. - 2 Photos(3cm X 4cm) Please visit the International Office for more information regarding a Student ID card and Bank Account Registration.

Upon Arrival 1. Accommodation: Where to stay It is very likely that the Keimyung International Office has already arranged accommodation for you. If this is not the case, please contact the International Office.

Drinking Water It is recommended to use bottled water for drinking. There is a filtered water dispenser on each floor of the dormitories.

Key and Door Card Key You can pick up your key from the guard office at the residence gate when you arrive. Remember to keep the front door card key with you whenever you go out.

Telephone The telephone inside your room will work only for on-campus telephones numbers. You can arrange with the Housing Office to have the phone enabled with normal connectivity. There is a payphone on the second floor of the Housing Office. You can purchase a phone card at the small shop on the same floor

Laundry There is a communal laundry room on each and every floor. The laundry is coin operated, and relatively inexpensive (100 Won per 15 minutes). The dormitory laundry machines do not fully dry clothes. Dry cleaning is readily available off campus.

Garbage There are recycling bins outside the front door. Please take the time to separate your garbage. Here in Korea, it is usual to also put out food waste. Anything except orange peels can be put into the little red buckets next to the rest of the recycling.

Other Amenities There is a small convenience store that carries basic necessities and an internet café on the second floor of the housing office building.

2. Internet Access Internet access via LAN is available in the dormitory rooms. However, before using it you will have to get the LAN cable from the assistant from each hall (dormitory). There are also wireless hotspots throughout the campus but you will need your student identification number and password, which you should receive from the International Office. Note that there is wireless available in the dormitories.

There are PCs available for public use on the 2nd floor of the Housing Office until 11 pm. Additional PCs are available in the International Lounge on the 1st floor of New Bauer Hall. Internet cafés, PC Bangs, are generally plentiful in every neighborhood. You can easily recognize the sign PC 방. They are cheap and have high-speed internet connections and reliable up-to-date equipment. All faculty offices have high-speed internet access. 3. Cell Phones Most foreign cell phones will not work in Korea. You cannot buy a cell phone without your Alien Registration card. Cell phone stores are easy to find but it is best to take a Korean speaker with you to help you. You can also ask your buddy for further assistance. 4. Subway and Transportation Card Subway While there is a comprehensive bus system covering nearly every part of Daegu, the subway is the easiest way to get around Daegu. There are two subway lines in Daegu. Line 2 (green line) stops at Keimyung University Seongseo Campus and runs east to west across the city. This is the line that you will use most often. Line 1 (red line) runs from the northeast corner of the city to the southwest corner and goes near Keimyung University Daemyung Campus. You can transfer from Line 1 to Line 2 at Banwoldang Station in the heart of the downtown shopping and entertainment area.

Inside any subway station you will find a ticket machine near the gate. For 1,200 Won you will receive a small token which you scan as you enter the subway gate and deposit into the slot as you exit the gate at the end of your ride. If you use the subway often, you can purchase a re-chargeable bus and subway fare card also called as the Transportation Card at the station office for 2,000 Won. Using this card lowers the price of a single ride to 1,100 Won. You can also transfer within 30 minutes from the subway to the bus (or the bus to the subway) without paying an additional fare. 5. Smart-phones and Kakaotalk It is recommended, if you have a smart-phone, to download the most popular messaging application in Korea, Kakao talk, to easily get connected to your buddies and to your future friends in Korea. 6. Cafeterias and Restaurants On campus there are several student cafeterias and one faculty/staff cafeteria. The most central and easiest to use is on the second floor of New Bauer Hall. There is a small food court with four eateries and an espresso shop. Be aware that student cafeterias can be confusing for those unfamiliar with the ordering system and who cannot read Korean. Most meals will be less than 5,000 Won. Off campus there are hundreds of small and medium sized restaurants with the greatest concentrations across the street from East Gate and South Gate. 7. Groceries and Sundries There are many small supermarkets near campus. When you first arrive you will probably want

to

visit

Homeplus

(open

around

10am-10pm),

a

large

department

store

and

supermarket, to get personal items, linens, dishes and groceries. Within the Homeplus building there is also a large food court, a McDonald’s, and a Popeye’s Chicken. Homeplus is located on the subway at Yongsan station. The shortest route to the subway is a set of steps heading down the hill near the residence gate. Go down the steps, turn left and follow the small road. You will pass a small grocery store. Continue past it towards the main road and you will find the Gangchang subway station. It should take about 10 minutes to go from the residence area to the subway station. Be careful in wet weather, the steps can be slippery. To get to Homeplus enter the subway going towards Yeungnam University. It is 4 stops from Gangchang to Yongsan station where Homeplus is located (about a 10 minute ride). Get off at Yongsan station and take exit 1.

At the Cash Register You will be asked if you want a plastic bag. If you get a bag you will be charged a few won extra. You may pay by cash, domestic, or foreign credit card. When you use a credit or debit card in Korea, you may be asked if you want to pay the charge in one or more payments. This is a common question. You can agree and gesture “1” and then sign for your purchase.

Heading Home You can take the subway back to campus.

Because the platform is in the center, be sure

that you get on the subway heading towards Munyang.

Taxi With heavy bags many people prefer to take a taxi home. When you leave Homeplus you will see a taxi stand immediately in front of the store. The ride should be about 6,000 Won. 8. Banking Most ATMs have English language menus available. Please note that most ATMs in Korea, unlike in the West, are closed at night, usually at 11pm but no later than midnight, and reopen the following morning. There are ATMs available in various places throughout the campus (see map). All of the ATMs on campus are Daegu Bank machines. There are three bank machines on campus that will accept foreign debit cards with the

Cirrus logo. They are located at the following locations: The second floor of the Housing Office, next to the convenience store; the first floor of the main Administration Building; and at the East Gate branch of Daegu Bank.

If you have difficulty using Daegu Bank ATMs, the Korea Exchange Bank (KEB) may be a good alternative. The KEB nearest campus is outside Seongseo Industrial Complex (subway line 2). As you leave exit 8, walk straight for about 2 minutes. It will be on your left. Many convenience stores have ATMs that may accept your foreign debit cards. Look for the

Cirrus or Plus logo above the ATM machine.

9. Post Office There is a post office on campus in Old Bauer Hall (see map). It is open Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm. The post office near Seongseo Industrial Complex subway station, across from KEB bank is also open on Saturdays from 9am – 1pm. Korea Post provides a very reliable overnight service, EMS, if you need to send documents home quickly. 10. Medical Clinic on campus and University Hospital If you are feeling ill when you arrive there is a small medical clinic on campus (located in Old Bauer Hall)

Its hours are 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday.

During regular business

hours, or for serious illness, contact Dongsan Hospital International Clinic at (053)250-7993 or (053)250-8287. They speak English and will set up appointments for you and will help you during the appointment. Dongsan Hospital is located near subway Line 2, Sin-nam subway station that name was changed from Seomun Market to Sin-nam, exit 5. For Dongsan Hospital’s English Website, go to www.dsmc.or.kr and click on “English.”

11. What to expect in class? Teaching and Learning Styles/Methods Teaching and learning styles/methods in Korea are somewhat different from what you are accustomed to at your home institution. Many professors use the teaching format of lecture with little interactions between students and the professor. Group presentations serve usually as a platform for students to express their opinions and stimulate group interactions. The average class size is about 30 students. Expect these differences. Take up the challenges of this different classroom culture. Use of English Expect language differences and difficulties. Many of the classes in which you enroll will be taught by Korean professors who will use English as the medium of instruction. Keimyung University usually offers 400 classes taught in English each semester. 12. Things to know for your course selections - Credits Full time students need to register a minimum of 12 credits and a maximum of 20 credits in each semester. A full-time academic load is 36 credits for an academic year. Overloads are not usually permitted for international students. One-credit is equivalent to 1 hour of class study or two 2 hours of laboratory classes per week. - Class Requirements Students are required to take Korean Language Practice as a Required Course. The placement interview in Korean is required for those students who have previous knowledge of the Korean language. According to the test result, students may be placed either in KLP(2), Intermediate level or KLP(3), Advanced Level. Those students who do not have any knowledge of the Korean language will be placed in KLP (1) class, the introductory level. - Drop/Add Courses Changing courses is allowed within the first week of each semester. No change of course enrollment will be permitted after the first week. - Audit Students may enroll for some courses on an audit basis by obtaining permission from the instructor of the course. Enrollment on an audit basis will not lead to academic credit, nor will it appear on the transcript. - Transcript A copy of the student's "Transcript Certificate" will be issued and sent to the students' home institution free of charge by the International Center before the following dates.
