The Interior Design Department at AUD is recognized for its ability to find the fantasy in everyday things and translate them into objects through their knowledge and exploration of materials, technology and finishes. A career in Interior Design at AUD promotes student participation in numerous facets of Interior Design such as developing products, furniture, lighting, interior architecture, events and scenography.

The design industry is currently experiencing a transformation that presents an unquestionable impetus for change in teaching the next generation of design professionals. At AUD, we are educating students to become highly qualified careeroriented Interior Design graduates able to integrate art, design, technology and business practice, with the skills and knowledge to produce highly functional and aesthetically appealing interior environments. In addition, the program enforces ethical values in regards to the profession and ethnic and cultural diversity, as well as environmental considerations. The American University in Dubai is the first in the Middle East and North Africa region to offer Integrated Computational Design and specifically Building Information Modeling (BIM) application courses within its B.F.A. in Interior Design program.

Program Mission

The Interior Design Program at the American University in Dubai is aimed at producing a highly qualified career-oriented graduate who is able to integrate art, design, technology and business practice, with the skills and knowledge to produce highly functional and aesthetically appealing interior environments. In addition, the program enforces ethical values in regards to the profession and ethnic and cultural diversity, as well as environmental considerations.

Program Goals

The B.F.A. in Interior Design prepares graduates who have: • Learned cutting edge techniques by maintaining close ties with current design practices and industries; • Developed the necessary skills to be competitive in the global marketplace; • Developed high ethical values vis-à-vis the profession, cultural diversity, and environmental considerations; • Acquired high oral and graphic communication skills.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students graduating from the B.F.A. in Interior Design will be able to: • Demonstrate an integrated method in designing interiors and space planning; • Discuss architectural conceptual design, history and theory by relating styles, movements and Philosophies to interior design; • Design interiors that acknowledge and integrate the human, sociocultural and economic aspects at the local, regional and global levels; • Demonstrate the ability to produce, analyze and present interior design by communicating clearly and effectively in oral, writing and graphical forms as well as advanced digital software and media; • Effectively apply technical skills in the areas of building materials, technologies, interior detailing, lighting, textiles and building codes to design aesthetically appealing and environmentally responsive interiors; • Produce design that demonstrates understanding of administrative, financial, legal issues as they relate to the practice of the profession of Interior Design and observe ethical standards.

Minor

in Interior

Design

An undergraduate minor is a cluster of courses taken in a field of study outside the student’s major. The minor consists of a minimum of 16 credit hours of coursework beyond the requirements of the major and is intended to broaden the student’s knowledge beyond the immediate field of study. Minors offered by the various academic units are listed in the appropriate sections. The minor in Interior Design allows students to develop knowledge in the areas of textiles, building materials, lighting, furniture design and interior space planning. In addition to university-wide degree requirements, students must satisfy prerequisites and complete all of the following courses: The minor in Interior Design is open to all students except those majoring in Interior Design. Students wishing to pursue the minor are responsible for completing all course prerequisites or establishing prerequisite equivalency. In addition to university-wide requirements, students must complete a minimum of five courses.

Certification The American University in Dubai is an Autodesk® Authorized Certification Center for AutoCAD®, AutoCAD® Civil 3D, 3D Studio MAX, Inventor, Revit Architecture, and Maya® software.

Facilities The School of Architecture, Art, and Design recognizes that computers have become an integral part of education, communication, and social networking. The Department of Interior Design maintains several well-equipped and advanced computer labs and lounges. Hardware is updated or upgraded on annual basis and is powerful enough to handle intense computational processes from 2D graphics, 3D modeling and rendering to 4D animations and walkthroughs. Software versions are also kept up to date annually. Wi-Fi access to the Internet and the School network is available throughout campus.

Scanning, projectors, printing and large format plotting are all available in-house. A dedicated knowledgeable IT Services team helps keep all computing resources running smoothly and also helps with troubleshooting personal laptops. A dedicated model and furnituremaking workshop is also available on campus. A recently set up Design Center serves to engage faculty and students in research and outreach to the Interior Design community at large.

Student Club AUD Departmental Clubs serve as professional organizations that address the special needs and interests of students in specific areas of study. They encourage members to explore their interests and talents and organize major specific activities such as lectures, seminars, professor’s lunches, competitions, exhibitions, workshops and field trips. The clubs also serve as a liaison between the student body and faculty of each department.

The Interior Design Club

As the Department places high emphasis on effective visual and oral communication skills, students are encouraged to initiate events and activities that complement these qualities. The ID club members represent AUD in various events and competitions in the UAE.
