The Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Department

About the JJC Fine Arts Program Joliet Junior College is committed to students and their pursuit of fine arts. The college demonstrated its commitment to meeting students’ artistic needs by providing space for learning and performing. In 2012, the music program space tripled, adding classrooms, a recording lab and much more. The theater program is now enjoying the new Black Box Theatre to create the perfect setting for more intimate productions, and the Laura A. Sprague Art Gallery has three times the space of its previous location. Every year, the Fine Arts Department offers the community a variety of entertainment and cultural activities. With captivating theatre productions, must-see art gallery openings and nationallyrecognized musical offerings, Joliet Junior College is the cultural destination for residents both near and far. Film Festival

Joliet Junior College Fine Arts Department Community Film Festival

Community Film Festival The JJC Fine Arts Department will sponsor a film festival on Oct. 15, 2016 in the Mainstage Theatre located in the K-Building of the Main Campus. Each screening will be free of charge, but tickets should be obtained through the Theatre Box Office. The JJC library is sponsoring a readalong of the novels “Being There” and “The Danish Girl.” Box Office phone: (815) 208-2200 Funding for the Joliet Junior College Film Festival was provided by the Joliet Junior College Foundation Awards for Excellence program.

Being There (1979) Rated PG-13 • 10:30 a.m. This film adaptation of Jerzy Kosinski’s novel is devoted to the so-called Chauncey Gardiner. It seems Gardiner has always been a gardener, completely secluded from direct involvement with life beyond the walls of the estate where he has worked. He is, however, aware of television. After the death of his employer, he stumbles into the outside world. Through a series of favorable (and for the film audience, very humorous) coincidences, Gardiner wins the friendship of a powerful Washington, D.C. insider. Gardiner makes a rapid rise in Washington political and social circles, and eventually he is considered as a top contender for Presidential candidacy. The role of Chauncey Gardiner is portrayed by Peter Sellers. Melvyn Douglas and Shirley MacLaine play supporting roles.

The Danish Girl (2015) Rated R • 1:30 p.m. Based on the historical novel of the same name by David Ebershoff, this film is an interpretation of the life of the Lili Elbe, an early recipient of sex reassignment surgery. The film begins in 1926, as Einar Wegener, a young, married and successful artist, begins to come to terms with his true sexual identity. The challenges faced by Einer as he gradually embraces the life of Lili, and especially the struggles he faced in his personal relationships and with the medical community, form the center points of the film.

Eddie Redmayne received an Oscar Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Lili. Joliet’s Community Alliance and Action Network is supporting the presentation of this film. (C.A.A.N. is an organization devoted to advocacy, support and outreach for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.)

Eight Minutes in August: The F5 Plainfield Tornado of 1990 (2015) Not Rated • 4:30 p.m. On Aug. 28, 1990, an F-5 tornado struck Plainfield, Crest Hill and Joliet, ravaging the communities, taking a toll of 29 lives, and leaving hundreds seriously injured. With commentary from WGN Chief Meteorologist Tom Skilling, as well as others who were immediately impacted, this documentary includes an impressive array of archival film footage and photographs. The Fine Arts Department is pleased to join the Joliet Area Historical Museum in providing the first public screening of this film in its entirety.

Each film will be screened in the Joliet Junior College Mainstage Theatre (K1000). Each film will followed by a discussion, and the opportunity for questions and comments. The lobby area for the theatre will be open 30 minutes prior to each screening. Tickets are required, but are available free of charge, and may be obtained through the JJC Theatre Box Office (K1002.) Call (815) 280-2200 for more information.
