Information  for  international  students   The CENTRE D’ÉTUDES SUPÉRIEURES MUSIQUE ET DANSE (CESMD) de Poitou-Charentes is a Higher Education Institution. The CESMD is a partner of the University of Poitiers: www.univ-poitiers.fr, and of the Abbaye aux Dames de Saintes (Jeune orchestre de l’Abbaye aux Dames): www.abbayeauxdames.org. The CESMD is an active member of the European Association of Conservatoires (AEC): within this association partnerships have already been established with numerous European institutions.

PROGRAMMES OPEN TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS International applicants have several possibilities: • Exchange programme (Erasmus+): for students coming from partner-institutions • Regular programmes: open to all students • Hors cursus student: personalised programme, courses on demand

STUDY PROGRAMMES According to the French Higher education system, the music department offers three programmes:

DNSPM / LICENCE (BACHELOR) The « Diplôme national supérieur professionnel de musicien (DNSPM) » is an undergraduate degree (Bachelor in performance). It is linked to an academic diploma (Licence de musicologie) delivered by the University of Poitiers. This programme is open in the following study fields:  Strings (violin, viola, cello, bass)  Saxophone  Piano  Early music (historical instruments, singing, organ)  Traditional music

MASTER PROGRAMME “MUSIC: RESEARCH AND ENSEMBLE PRACTICE” This programme is offered in partnership with the Université de Poitiers, which delivers the degree.  Early Music  Contemporary music and creation

DIPLÔME D’ÉTAT (INSTRUMENTAL AND VOCAL TEACHER TRAINING) The « Diplôme d’État (DE) de professeur de musique » is a professional diploma, required for teaching in most public and private music schools in France. (Diploma in instrumental and vocal teaching). This programme is open in the following study fields:  All vocal and instrumental specialties  Jazz  « Musiques actuelles amplifiées » (Pop, Rock)  « Formation musicale » (general music education, theoretical subjects, culture, etc) Detailed information for each programme on the website: www.cesmd-poitoucharentes.org

GENERAL INFORMATION The city of POITIERS, capital of the Région Poitou-Charentes, is connected with big European major cities (Paris, Bordeaux, Bruxelles, London…) by the TGV. Poitiers (137 000 inhabitants), has a rich 2 000 years old history, and presents a prestigious architectural patrimony. The University (founded in 1431) is one of the oldest in Europe; the presence of 25 000 students promotes a very creative and diversified cultural life. Poitiers, a major city without the disadvantages!

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS Recommended language skills: A2. No certificate is required for admission The instrumental or chamber music lessons may be given in English or Spanish, but most of the courses will be given in French. The students who need extra French language classes, can contact the Centre Français Langue Étrangère. The language classes are the responsibility of the student, and will not be financed by the CESMD, nor by the University.

REGULAR PROGRAMMES ADMISSION PROCEDURES The admission process is the same as for French students: applicants must be present in Poitiers for the entrance examinations. The application form and the guidelines for application (in French) are available on the website. Application deadline: April 9, 2015

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS To be admitted to participate to the entrance examination, you need a certificate of 2 diplomas equivalent to French diplomas: • Baccalauréat: general pre-college study in your country • DEM or DNOP: Pre-college certificate/diploma in Music Candidates who don’t have the equivalent of those diplomas can apply; all the applications will be analysed by a committee, that can decide to accept them or not.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS The French language is used in all courses and lessons at the CESMD and the University of Poitiers, as well as during the entrance examinations. Therefore, knowledge of French language is mandatory for all applicants: all applicants coming from non-French-speaking countries must take a French language test (written and oral) as part of their entrance examination. This test is mandatory. The French language test is used to check the ability of the applicant to follow the programme. The expected levels below are different, according to the programmes. • Cursus DNSPM: Level A2 Students who don’t have the required level in September can follow extra French classes during their first year. In any case, language classes are the responsibility of the student, and will not be financed by the CESMD or the University. In case their language level is insufficient at the end of the 1st year, the continuation of the course might be re-considered. • Pedagogical programme (DE): Level B2 For this programme (Diplôme d’État), the level B2 is mandatory at the beginning of the study (September). Students who need extra French language classes, can contact the Centre Français Langue Étrangère. The language classes are the responsibility of the student, and will not be financed by the CESMD, nor by the University.

VALIDATION OF STUDY PERIODS If you have diplomas from your country, or/and Higher Education studies, you need an attestation to certify equivalence. Contact the centre ENIC-NARIC France:

“HORS CURSUS” STUDENTS Besides the exchange programmes, the CESMD provides personalised programmes and courses on demand. Duration: minimum duration: one semester; maximum duration: one academic year.

PROGRAMME COMPONENTS The programme components are defined according to the student’s wishes and the effective planning of the semester. They may content modules from the DNSPM/Licence programme, form the DE programme (pedagogy), as well as sessions form the continuous professional development department. Those courses don’t deliver ECTS-credits.
