Conventional Ultrasound Conventional ultrasonic testing, or UT, uses single or dual element transducers to generate high frequency, highly directional sound waves to nondestructively measure thickness, or find hidden flaws inside materials such as metals, plastics, ceramics, and composites.

Phased Array Ultrasound Phased array testing, or PA, is a specialised type of ultrasonic testing that uses multelement array transducers and powerful software to steer high frequency sound beams through the test piece and to map returning echoes, producing detailed images of internal structures.

Eddy Current Eddy current testing, or EC, uses electromagnetic induction to inspect metallic parts. An eddy current probe with a single coil generates a magnetic field that causes an electrical current to flow through the item being tested, enabling detection of surface or near-surface defects.

Eddy Current Array Eddy current array technology, or ECA, provides the ability to electronically drive and read several eddy current coils positioned side by side in the same probe assembly. Data acquisition is possible through multiplexing, which avoids mutual inductance between coils.

Microscopy Industrial microscopy integrates superior optics and software for imaging, analysis, and measurement of advanced materials or sophisticated specimens. The types of precise instruments also include measuring and confocal laser scanning microscopes.

Microspectrophotometry Microspectrophotometry measures the micro-spot light spectra for reflectance, chromaticity, thickness, and transmittance of optical elements. Olympus provides fast and repeatable measurements in a simple to use platform.

Interferometry Interferometry is a technique to measure surface accuracy of optical elements by interference fringe which is produced by reflected or transmitted wavefront interference of reference standard and test sample.

Remote Visual Remote Visual Inspection, or RVI, is a technique that permits inspection of an area that has no direct visual access. A slim and often flexible viewing device or “scope” is inserted into the area through a small opening, providing an image for the operator to examine.

High-Speed Video High-speed video, or HSV, uses digital cameras that capture events that are too fast for the eye to see by recording a very large number of images within a short period of time, and then playing them back slowly.

X-Ray Fluorescence and X-ray Diffraction X-ray Fluorescence and X-ray Diffraction provide real-time, nondestructive material analysis in applications ranging from metal sorting, lead paint detection, and alloy verification to analysis of oil, fluids, and minerals. 4

Integrated Inspection Systems

BIS – Bar Inspection The Bar Inspection System (BIS) uses phased array and eddy current array technologies to inspect the full volume and surface of small/medium-size bars (section < 254mm). The system is based on a unique mechanical concept for constant, optimal positioning of probes, independently of the straightness variations of the bars.

RBIS – Bar Inspection The Rotating Bar Inspection System (RBIS) combines phased array and eddy current array technologies to inspect the full volume and surface of large-size bars (section >254mm). The inspection is carried out during the rotation of the bar, and the linear movement of the carriagesupporting inspection head.

RTIS – Tube Body Inspection The Rotating Tube Inspection System (RTIS) uses phased array technology to inspect the full body of seamless and welded tubes. The system is based on a “Water Wedge” concept using a membrane to maintain a permanent and stable water chamber providing fast coupling and a short untested length.

ERW In-Line – Tube Weld Inspection The ERW In-Line system uses phased array technology to inspect weld seams and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of electrical resistance welded (ERW) tubes. The head rotation capability allows each probe independent movement from –120 to +120 degrees for weld tracking.

ERW Off-Line – Tube Weld Inspection The ERW Off-Line system uses phased array technology to inspect weld seams and the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of electrical resistance welded (ERW) tubes. Using only one PA probe on each side of the weld provides wide sector coverage of the HAZ with constant amplitude.

Overview

Olympus continually strives to innovate in the development of high-speed inspection systems that adhere to the highest international standards. We primarily focus our efforts on delivering industrial NDT system solutions capable of inspecting metal bars, billets, wirerods, and tubes. Olympus offers standardised turnkey solutions that can be adapted to customers’ requirements. Each aspect of the system delivery can be provided through a single project, which may include any of the following: testing equipment, mechanics, electronics and automation, a water management system, and commissioning. Olympus also offers XRF systems to verify grade and chemical composition of alloys.

10
