Hospice Community Palliative Care Nurse Specialist Our Community Palliative Care Nurse Specialist is Beth Ross. Beth manages the care of patients and their families who are living at home with a life-limiting illness. An important aspect of her role is spending time with patients and families in their own surroundings or care facility; providing emotional and psychological support. She also spends time listening and advising on various subjects such as treatments, symptom management, medication, home help services and financial assistance. Beth liaises closely with the local primary health care teams, General Practitioners, District Nursing services and Social Services. Hospice Support Groups

We have a number of fundraising support groups who year-on-year raise much needed funds on our behalf. They do this in a number of ways; Through organising fundraising events, sponsored activities and through collections. In addition to Fundraising, these groups also play a valuable role in raising awareness of the Hospice in their neighbourhood by attending organised events and taking promotional stands. Last year our Support Groups contributed over £95,000 towards the provision of Hospice Care for local people. Lurgan lady Deirdre Breen started a Hospice Support Group called ‘Friends of Southern Area Hospice’ in Lurgan in 2000. Deirdre who manages the local library started the group by hosting a Table Quiz after the death of her friend’s mother in the Hospice. Deirdre describes how being a part of the Hospice Support Group, which meets on a monthly basis, has made a difference to her life.“Being a member of Friends of Southern Area Hospice has allowed me to reach out into the community and to become more confident. The first time I went to collect a cheque and speak on behalf of the Hospice I was terrified, now I don’t even think twice about it! Being a volunteer has helped me to make lots of new friends and I really enjoy the challenge!” To date the Friends of Southern Area Hospice Support Group have raised a staggering £490,000, and they aim to reach the £ ½ million target this year! Tracey Wallace is the secretary of the Mourne Support Group which is based in Kilkeel. The Mourne Support Group has 12 members and they host a range of Fundraising events on behalf of the Hospice from coffee mornings and cake sales to bag packs and street collections in Kilkeel and surrounding areas. The group meet on a monthly basis to plan and organise their activities. Tracey describes how much it means to her to “...initially I was the only one in the support group who had never needed the help of the Hospice. If someone had told me seven years ago when I joined the support group that my Daddy would one day use the Hospice Services I would not have believed them. It is great to be able to help by raising vital funds for such a worthy cause and I have made many new friends in the Mourne Support Group from near and far!” 2

First Citizens of New Council on Official Hospice Visit The newly appointed Chair and Vice Chair of Newry Mourne and Down Council, Cllr Naomi Bailie and Cllr Gillian Fitzpatrick recently came to Southern Area Hospice, St John’s House, Newry in a joint celebration of Nurses Day and 25 Years of Hospice Care. The newly designated Council dignitaries met with patients, staff and volunteers in the Hospice and witnessed first-hand the work of our Hospice nurses. During the tour they discussed with staff and management the key issues currently facing the Hospice. One of the key issues raised was that of funding and the substantial building repairs and maintenance required in the St John’s facility. The Southern Area Hospice has to raise £2.38 million in 2015 to maintain the level of service it currently provides in the southern region. Ann Cooney, Chief Executive of the Southern Area Hospice said, “We are delighted that Councillor Bailie and Councillor Fitzpatrick took the time to come and visit our facility in Newry to celebrate Nurses Day and the 25th Anniversary of the Hospice. Visits such as this are vitally important in highlighting the contribution that the Hospice provides to support health and social care services as well as the financial pressures which a charity like ours faces on a daily basis”. Southern Area Hospice Services include an Inpatient Unit, Outpatient Clinics in Newry, Craigavon and Dungannon, Day Hospice Units in Newry and Dungannon, a Palliative Care team in Daisy Hill Hospital, the Donaldson Counselling and Therapy Centre, Home Care, Social Work team, and a Community Liaison Nurse. Payroll giving - it’s simple, it’s easy and it’s tax effective!

The takeaway that gives back! Dolce Vita!

This is a wonderful way to support the Hospice and help us to secure a regular source of income.

La Dolce Vita have announced the launch of their mobile app available to download from iTunes and Android stores. For a small fee of 79p (all of which is donated to Hospice) you will be able to order all your favourite meals or browse through a wide variety of tasty dishes. Some special “La Dolce Vita Deals” are available on the app and it’s also integrated with Nifty Nosh so ordering your meal is easy.

Payroll giving is so simple to set up! The specified donation amount is taken from the Gross Salary before tax is calculated, meaning that every time your employees give, the tax-man gives too! So giving £1 a week will only cost the individual 80 pence since the tax man contributes the other 20 pence! Pictured are staff from Viltra, Newry, who signed up to the scheme. For information on the scheme, contact Fiona Stephens by emailing [email protected] or phone 028 3025 1333. 4

A Massive Thank You To The SHSCT For The Past Two Years Of Fundraising! In June 2013, Southern Area Hospice Services was chosen as Trust Charity of the Year. Almost £60,000 has been raised. As our time draws to a close we wanted to reflect upon some of the events which took place and the warm welcome we received from all of you. Collection boxes - boxes were placed throughout the Trust Region and performed exceptionally well in the Trust’s three hospitals, South Tyrone, Daisy Hill, Craigavon Area Hospital and as well as in Trust Headquarters. We also had some “part with a pound” collections in the hospitals and promotion of payroll giving. Staff events - by far these were the most innovative and funny fundraisers. Trust employees joined together in many ways, too numerous to mention here, but a few examples follow: The biggest event was the zipline. Daisy Hill Outpatient staff held a number of events in memory of staff who had been cared for by the Hospice and Trust HQ Performance and Reform. Zipline - our most successful event which attracted staff from throughout the Trust took place on 20th September 2014, showed how many of you were willing to throw yourselves out of a crane and zipline 1,000 metres across the river Lagan for our hospice. An amazing £12,192.08 was raised by those who took part. Leading the way was Dr John Simpson.

A massive thank you from all of us!

The Hospice Lottery began in 1999 and has six fabulous cash prizes to be won every week. The lottery still has many of its original players. Deborah Kennedy is one of them and she explains why she continues to support Southern Area Hospice through playing the lottery, “I continue to support the Hospice by playing the lottery every week. It only costs £1 per week and goes a long way in supporting our local Hospice. For me, winning isn’t important but I have had a few wins which is a bonus. I have seen first-hand the work that the Hospice does and realise how important it is for the people of the area, therefore I try to support it in any way I can”. By signing up and playing our weekly lottery draw, not only will you be in with the chance of winning up to £500, but you will also be helping those who we at Southern Area Hospice Services provide care and support to. Sign up today and Help Us Help Others.

You can pay monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or annually. It really is the gift that gives twice – both to the person who you buy it for and the Hospice.

Our shops are currently seeking volunteers to help out for a couple of hours of a week. We rely heavily on the generosity of our volunteers, who are key members of the team in all of our shops. There are a number of roles suited to everyone, including sorting out the donations, creating displays for the windows, managing the tills and many more. Would you be interested?
