ABOUT BY DESIGN SFCS Architects invites you to join us for the 30th Annual By Design Conference for Senior Living. SFCS has developed this popular annual conference to inform industry professionals of the trends, opportunities and challenges facing the field of senior living, including the newest thinking and latest research. The faculty includes a team of nationally recognized experts who cover the disciplines necessary to plan, develop, reinvent and reposition senior living communities and services.

CONFERENCE FOCUS Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) are faced with the challenge of finding a vision that uniquely fulfills their mission, reinvents their brand, and propels them to the forefront of an ever-growing industry. At By Design 2015, we want to motivate you to think differently about the challenges you face every day -- we want to inspire you to explore new opportunities to expand your mission of service. Throughout the conference, we will highlight the experiences of senior living communities and industry professionals who have taken action and learned firsthand how defying the norm can bring opportunities and unexpected solutions for long-term success. Take this opportunity to learn from nationally recognized providers and consultants in the areas of marketing, finance, development, research, and architecture about how you can Disrupt Now and Ignite Change for the Future! This program has been submitted (approval pending) for 8.50 total clock hours of continuing education from the National Continuing Education Review Service (NCERS) of the National Association of Boards of Examiners for Nursing Home Administrators (NAB).

AUDIENCE This conference has been planned especially for executive directors, CEOs, administrators, board members, planners, marketers, building committee members, trustees of retirement communities, and sponsors of senior housing.

The Dementia Diaries: It’s Never Too Late

How much do we really know and understand about the firsthand experience of living with dementia, and how can that better inform the environments that we shape? Our team of senior living experts tackled this issue “head on” by living as memory care residents in communities across the country, using equipment to simulate the behaviors of a person with mid-stage dementia. Join us to understand this unusual research project and explore the perceptions and findings of these brave designers. We will discuss the physical environment, perceptual changes, cognitive impacts and psychological factors of this experience. In conclusion, this team will touch upon the future of memory care through emerging approaches, programs and research studies. The average American home is three times the size that it was 50 years ago, and the majority of the garages do not have room for a car. Today, we might be on the verge of a bubble, recoil or readjustment to this trend as the Tiny House and Micro-apartment movements gain steam across the nation. The speakers will share firsthand experiences with enhanced spaces where quality trumps quantity, less equals more, and discrete technology provides flexibility to spaces that enable independence. Discover how these radical shifts in thinking can impact environments for seniors and challenge the current norm on the way to tapping into an under-served market. Serving the 98%: Successful Aging For All

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) tend to serve the upper income levels of the United States’ senior population, typically through Lifecare or fee-for-service contracts. Most seniors either don’t have the income and assets to move into a CCRC, or simply do not wish to leave their homes. How will the majority of seniors in the U.S. be housed and cared for in the future? Home healthcare, affordable housing, housing with concierge services, telemedicine, Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE®) and other programs are being used by different providers to reach more seniors. Learn how large single-site and multi-facility senior housing providers are offering diverse housing options and unique services targeted at middle and lower income seniors. Each speaker will discuss ways their organization is expanding their mission to address the needs of the broader senior population. Drew Kepley, AIA, LEED®AP, SFCS Wayne Olson, Volunteers of America

Living the Dream: Boomers in Paradise

In the blink of an eye, America’s largest, wealthiest, most influential and demanding generation has reached the second half of life. As this generation redefines aging and adds more than 40 million to the senior population, they will seek to “Live the Dream” and impact the hospitality industry by becoming the largest consumer group for hotels, lodging, restaurants, transportation, and entertainment. How are some of the top hospitality vendors preparing for this generation of retirees and pleasure travelers? What types of amenities, services and designs are they implementing to attract the Boomer consumer? How can CCRCs utilize these strategies and translate them onto their campuses and attract this demographic? This panel discussion will be led by a leading educator and developer in the hospitality sector and teamed with a senior living marketing/branding professional. The session will focus on trends in accommodations, amenities, attractions, travel, and restaurants and will provide insight into creative ways they are preparing for this generation. Discover the latest ideas and thinking in hospitality trends, as well as new, dynamic ideas that are meeting the ever-changing needs and desires of the Boomer consumers. Pardon the Disruption: Creating Community For the Next Generation

The world is not the same place it was twenty, ten, or even five years ago; the same goes for aging and retirement housing. The next generation of retirees is going to radically change the retirement experience, fitting it to their needs, desires and expectations. Is your community ready to take on this new world and its demands? Across the country we have surveyed a broad spectrum of the Silent Generation and Boomers to look into the future and tell us what they expect of our communities, and what changes need to be made in order to excite and interest them. In addition, we will be asking you - the providers in the industry – many of the same questions, to see how well you perceive what the next generation of retirees desires. Based upon this research, we will provide you glimpse of what the new community of the future may look like. Our goal is to connect, excite and serve this next generation of seniors.
