In the Spirit of Mitutoyo

The Mitutoyo Philosophy Our Founding Sprit

Our founder’s wish as expressed upon the foundation of our Company.

(1) To contribute to people’s welfare through support of the advancement of Buddhist understanding. (2) To see that Mitutoyo excels in its field of expertise and in its business conduct throughout the world.

Our Management Principles

To become a complete man, one must acquire Wisdom, Benevolence and Valor. With Wisdom only, one tends to be cold. Benevolence alone makes one weaker. With Valor only, one may reach beyond his capabilities. When the three qualities are combined, however, one will become a complete man. Similarly, success in enterprise lies in the knowledge of Heaven, Earth and Man, Business will succeed only when these factors, “heaven sent” chances, natural opportunities, and harmony of man are present. Without even one factor, success is remote. In Buddhism, Butsu (Buddha), Po (Doctrine) and So (Priest) are three principle treasures for its promotion of the teaching. In Christianity, God, Bible and Minister. The word MITUTOYO signifies three abundances. “Mitsu” means three, while “Toyo” stands for a state of abundance. The name MITUTOYO was selected, with a sincere wish to see more complete men, to create a prosperous enterprise and to introduce righteous religion to all, along with the lasting wish for a peaceful world and fulfillment of meaningful life.

The Company’s mission and basic management objectives.

in many different industries throughout the world A pioneer in the field of precision measuring equipment

A new history of challenges, starting now

Mitutoyo’s history began with the establishment of a research center with the aim of producing Japan’s first micrometers in Tokyo’s Kamata district by Yehan Numata, the company’s founder, in the 9th year of the Showa Era, i.e. 1934. Since then, the company has marketed products based on the concept of “good, cheap, and durable”, boldly enhancing new technology and releasing world-leading, revolutionary, high-tech products combining the five basic technologies of machines, electronics, optics, computing and control. As a result, the company has built a solid position as a leading company in the field of precision measuring instruments. Mitutoyo has also taken an early lead in creating a traceability system for conformance with national standards to ensure the highest possible reliability for measurement results. As part of this initiative, Mitutoyo has established calibration laboratories run by specially selected staff both in Japan and at overseas subsidiaries, resulting in a reliable system providing traceability to allow all our customers to use their measuring equipment with full confidence and peace of mind.

About 80 years Mitutoyo has achieved tremendous growth, metamorphosing from a small research center crammed into 230 square meters into a company with a global presence. The formidable frontier spirit of Mitutoyo’s research and development staff has been the driving force behind the company’s success. Always providing the best possible products as the leader in precision measuring technology, which has been referred to as the mother technology of industry, is our mission. As we enter the age of nanotechnology, which demands accuracy on the order of 1mm/1,000,000=1nm, and presents unprecedented technical challenge, we intend to strive proactively to achieve mastery of those technologies that will open the way to the next age, maintaining our pride as a top brand. Making the most of our comprehensive capabilities and global network, we will continue to launch superb Mitutoyo-brand products in the fields of testing and measuring equipment, including hardness testing machines, vibration testing systems, balancing machines, vibration measuring instruments, and seismographs.

The creation of outstanding workers is our mission. Develop people before creating things Mitutoyo offers reliable standards (quality information) that customers can rely on. Mitutoyo believes that the creation of standards that are trusted can be achieved only through the development of each and every employee. Mitutoyo works hard to develop employees who are well-balanced human beings and endeavors to provide products and solutions trusted by customers, based on its motto (good environment, good people, good technology) and the company saying (sincerity, forethought, fighting spirit).

“Expert” system for relaying valuable proprietary technologies and skills Mitutoyo has as its basic policy the in-house development and ownership of key technologies. Supporting this stance are the company’s employees, who have knowledge of sophisticated technologies and possess key skills. Mitutoyo established in 1995 its “Expert” system, naming employees with knowledge and skills particularly difficult to replace as “experts”, and tasked with passing on proprietary technologies and skills to the following generation.

COMPASS—Supporting systematic personnel formation COMPASS, an acronym that stands for “Communication & Performance Appraisal System”, is Mitutoyo’s personnel system. Under this system, each and every employee is made to understand the aims of the company, just like looking at a compass, through close communication with the manager of the section to which they belong, promoting the formation of employees through a clear understanding of not only business objectives, but also the training plan. 28

Company outline The world of precision measuring equipment, which demands accuracy and reliability serving as international standards, knows no national frontiers. Since its establishment, Mitutoyo has been creating systems that allow it to deliver products and solutions that satisfy customers all over the world. Such judgment and vetting is rigorously performed under a system where a multi-step check function works through multiple personnel.

Audit and Education on Security Trade Control The audits on security trade control over domestic operations and overseas subsidiaries are periodically performed, thereby checking for effectiveness of the security trade control mechanism. The directors and all employees, as well as persons in charge of security trade control operation, are strongly encouraged to receive in-house education, participate in and acquire “Security Trade Control Faculty Accreditation” from CISTEC. Additionally, efforts are being made to improve knowledge and faculty within the entire Mitutoyo group by implementing education and training inside and outside Japan for security trade control managers and persons in charge in Mitutoyo local subsidiaries. 38
