Dear Hostelling Friend, What would you say if you could go back in time and talk to your 18-year-old self? Would you warn yourself about challenges that would come your way, or tell yourself to throw caution to the wind and enjoy life? Of course, we can’t go back in time, but you’ve probably met students or young adults and thought how much they reminded you of yourself when you were their age. Perhaps you tried to give them words of encouragement or set them off in the right direction, hoping they might do something remarkable. That’s what we have the power to do now, but on a much larger scale. Unification officially completed on March 31, 2014. This was a 3-year journey that transitioned 27 separate organizations into one so that we could leverage our combined resources to make a bigger impact. It was aspirational and idealistic, and it happened. It has given us the platform to think big and achieve more. Last year, HI USA hosted over a million overnights and accomplished much, much more. We grew our network, launched new programs, expanded our regional impact, and provided travel scholarships to nearly 450 youths and young adults. We are telling the world how important travel is and how hostelling changes lives. So, instead of talking to our 18-year-old selves, let’s talk to the 18-year olds of today. Look for them in your local community, and we’ll look for them around the world. Together, we can guide them in the right direction, encouraging them to do something unforgettable: experience our hostels and our mission.

Glenn Azuma Russell Hedge Board Chair CEO

P.S. We would like to recognize and thank the HI USA Transition Board of Directors for their leadership during Unification. Also we installed a Successor Board of Directors on March 31, 2014. Both Boards are listed on the back inside cover of this annual report.

27 Organizations Become 1 – In Less Than 3 Years Three years ago, HI USA and its 26 local councils were joined in mission philosophy, but hostels and other programs were underfunded and of uneven quality. We were 27 separate silos, each with big aspirations and limited resources. The idea of unification was set into motion in 2011 by an affirmative vote from the councils. As a unified organization, the new HI USA would merge the councils into one nationwide organization so that the entire network could benefit from combined resources, knowledge, and teamwork and ultimately expand our mission impact. This provided the opportunity to rethink how we would work together to better serve the needs of today’s hostellers. Since the passion to be involved with hostelling extends beyond our physical buildings, we created five regional offices around the country. With the new central office supporting 5 regions and encompassing all 50 states, regional vice presidents were hired to oversee hostel

operations and take community involvement to the next level. Community outreach staff were placed at hostels and in areas without hostels to connect like-minded travelers and engage communities in our efforts. As of March 31, 2014, the process to unify 27 organizations into one was completed. In the short few months since then, we’ve already experienced the benefits of working collectively, which you’ll read about in this report. The generosity of volunteers across the country to unify their councils into one organization is inspiring. Now we are building the unified organization together. And that’s what hostelling is all about: saying yes to new opportunities, sharing experiences, and looking beyond yourself to the community of travelers. Welcome to the unified HI USA.

Savor life! Don’t ask, ‘Can I do this?’ Ask‘How can I do this?’ -Ane Powers, HI USA Transition Board member

W H AT W O U L D YO U S AY. . . if you could travel for free and make a difference? To someone who has hostelled before, this probably sounds like an easy answer. But most of the nearly 450 people who took advantage of our scholarship opportunities this year had never stayed in a hostel. This was their first taste of the transformative power of travel. IOU Respect

The Great Hostel Give Back

For the ninth year, Hostelling International brought together 23 young adults, ages 18-23, from Egypt, France, Germany, Lebanon, Tunisia, and the United States for two intensive weeks exploring one another’s cultures, beliefs, stereotypes, and world views. This year’s program took place in Tunisia from August 17-31, 2014. All expenses in Tunisia were covered, with U.S. participants receiving an additional $500 stipend from HI USA to offset the cost of flying to Tunisia.

Back by popular demand, HI USA hosted its fourth Great Hostel Give Back in January and February. Through this program, groups of 10 or more receive a free night for each day they volunteer at least 2 hours. At the end of their stay, groups host an event for hostel guests to share what they did and what they learned. In 2014, 7 hostels opened their doors to 12 groups, hosting 170 individuals. Combined, these groups delivered nearly 2,000 hours of community service by helping the homeless, beautifying indoor and outdoor spaces, and making a positive impact on communities across the country. They also learned about the power of hostelling with HI USA.

From a very talented pool of applicants, HI USA selected 2 men and 2 women to represent the U.S. in this signature cultural exchange program:

According to the group leader from Leadership Learning Community at Purdue University, “We really enjoyed getting to meet people from all over the world. [The students] were able to learn so much from the international guests, and they gained a global perspective on many matters, including educational opportunities and the importance of education.”

Perry Catlin, 21, Ohio Chakena Sims, 20, Illinois Gina Song, 23, Washington, DC Matthew Williams, 20, Maryland On his application, Perry had this to say about why he was interested in participating: “I wish to take my curiosity beyond the classroom and explore the differences between people and expound upon our similarities in an attempt to augment camaraderie, understanding, and tolerance.” It’s the exact kind of experience we hope for everyone who hostels around the world.

I hope I’ve inspired others to inspire others...I am beyond satisfied with what I’ve learned from being here. I’m better than I was before. -Chakena Sims, IOU respect participant IOU Respect 2014 Participants in Tunisia - 2 -

Travel Schola rships

to assist those with financial need and a thirst to explore new cultures. Preference is given to applicants who incorporate volunteerism, service learning, cultural heritage exploration, or academic research.

Can you imagine living 20 miles from the ocean and never seeing it? For some children in the San Francisco Bay Area, this is their reality. But thanks to initiatives like the Outdoor Hostel Advent ure program, youths ages 6-18 have the opport unity explore the unknow n world outside their front door and have their first hostel stay.

HI Los Angeles awards a $1,000 travel grant to assist a young adult, age 17-26, just starting his or her travel experiences. Candidates submit proposals for this award. The selected traveler communicates with HI USA staff throughout the journey and presents his or her experience upon returning.

In Boston, it’s about getting youth to experience life outside the big city by engaging in the rich history, environment, and cultural activities found on Cape Cod and the neighboring islands. Through the Youth Oppor tunities Unlimited Through Hostelling (YOUT H) program, three local youth organizations are invited to send teens on a hostel stay experience at HI Martha’s Vineyard, HI Nantucket, or HI Eastham. Each year, HI Austin offers one scholarship for a first-time traveler and one scholarship for an experienced traveler to see the world. Open to anyone age 18-30, this scholarship is designed

School is important, but travel will teach you so much more about the world than you would ever think is possible. Stop worrying so much about what everyone else wants you to do. -Stephanie Yoder, twenty-somethingtravel .com - 3 -

W H AT W O U L D YO U S AY. . . if people around the world shared a common goal? Sleep For Peace On September 21, 2014, HI USA hosted Sleep For Peace for the second consecutive year in honor of the United Nations International Day of Peace. Due to its success in 2013, Hostelling International (HI) hostels in nearly two dozen countries joined this year’s celebration. Sleep for Peace recognizes our enduring belief in the power of travel to foster a deeper understanding of people, places and the world around, which leads to a more tolerant world. Since HI is recognized by UNESCO as a peace-building organization, it was a natural fit to rally participation across borders. HI USA hostels hosted celebrations as unique as their destinations, inviting guests and the community to engage in dialogue and gain a new perspective on global issues and world cultures. HI Marin Headlands held a weekend of activities, including a walk, a Capoeira dance workshop, and a pizza dinner. HI New York organized a full week of activities, including a New York Peace Sights walking tour, live music, and a talent show.

W H O ’S I N ?

HI Portland Northwest hosted a social hour and discussion about the International Day of Peace. HI San Francisco City Center featured gospel singers and other performance artists in a community event, as well as a movie marathon for hostel guests.

W H AT WO U L D YO U S AY. . . if you were given the chance to grow?

With HI USA’s Strategic Plan guiding us towards the ambitious – yet achievable – goal of becoming a leading hostel provider, growing the number of overnight stays through a larger collection of hostels is a key priority. Raising Funds for Hostel Development Smaller HI USA hostels have been voted by hostellers as the friendliest and best hostels in the world, and their intimate setting enhances the personal interaction at the heart of our mission. The Small and Mid-Sized Hostel development fund was established to provide dedicated money to plan, design, and build smaller hostels across the country. Over the last year, HI USA

HI Houston, The Morty Rich Hostel Opened in 2011

worked with a team of dedicated volunteers to build the fund with support from generous donors, the Board of Directors, and senior HI USA staff.

Breaking New Ground

Richmond, Virginia, and Seaside/Monterey Bay, Califor nia, will soon be home to new HI USA hostels. Constr uction will begin on both proper ties this year, carrying forward the vision of the two councils that began these projects. HI Richm ond HI Richmond is working towards its anticipated opening in the summer of 2015. Located just 2 hours from Washington, DC, Richmond is a vibrant Southern city filled with eclectic cafés and restaurants, plenty of nightlife, and a rich American history. The hostel will be located on U.S. Bike Route 1. Richmond offers additional biking and hiking trails, outdoor advent ures, and state and national parks within arm’s reach, offering more to discover beyond the hidden tales of the Civil War. HI Seasid e, Monte rey Bay HI Seaside, Monterey Bay is part of the revitali zation and development of the decommissioned Fort Ord U.S. Army base. This hostel will make it possible for individuals and groups to visit the Monterey Bay coastal areas, where they can access the Fort Ord Dunes State Park, Califor nia State UniversityMonterey Bay, and the Fort Ord National Monument.

HI Richmond - Scheduled to Open in 2015

This monument holds some of the last undeveloped natural wildlands on the Monterey Peninsula, with 86 miles of trails. Visitors will enjoy a range of outdoor activities, including water sports, backcountry hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

W H AT WO U L D YO U S AY. . . if you could give travelers one piece of advice?

if someone surprised you with a gift of $85,000?

Eric Oetjen has some good advice to share. It’s advice he’s gathered from the people he met while traveling and staying at hostels. Where to eat in Sydney, Australia, where to go next from Auckland, New Zealand, how to travel between towns on the island of Fiji without taking the local bus along rural back roads to pick up farmers and their produce. You know, typical hosteller stuff.

An estate executor called with a generous surprise – HI USA would receive a legacy gift of $85,000 from Dorothy Ann Fowler. Having passed at age 85, Dorothy had fallen out of touch with HI USA, but the donation was specifically directed to be used for the Outdoor Hostel Adventures (OHA) program in the San Francisco Bay Area.

After college, Eric learned firsthand that the value of hostels wasn’t just in their affordability, but also in their ability to bring people together and enable knowledge sharing. He looked to the HI network of hostels to figure out where he should visit next and to the hostellers for everything in between. Eric remarks, “Hostelling offers a personal connection with fellow travelers who have real experiences to share.”

After contacting friends and family to find out more about Dorothy, it was revealed that she was a frequent guest at HI Pigeon Point Lighthouse in the 1980s, and she may have also stayed in HI USA hostels as she traveled up and down the coast. But we can only speculate about the meaningful experiences that led her to leave such a generous gift. A dedicated LGBT advocate, grandmother, and volunteer, Dorothy lived her life making a difference. Dorothy is now making a difference for underserved youth and creating the next generation of hostellers.

It’s those personal connections that also got him engaged with HI USA when he wasn’t on the road. Trusting the advice of colleagues, he got involved with the hostelling community in the greater Washington, DC/Maryland/ Virginia area. Soon Eric was a volunteer fundraiser and participating in group bike rides led by the current CEO of HI USA, Russ Hedge.

With her gift providing scholarships to the OHA program, more than 1,300 deserving students could receive a full scholarship to experience the outdoors in a meaningful way. Many of these students have never seen the ocean or what a sky full of stars looks like, and this program guides them through national parks, takes them to the water, and teaches them about the natural habitat that’s outside their front door.

Several years later, Eric became a member of the HI USA Transition Board of Directors, helping shape the new direction of HI USA and driving the mission home. During the holidays, instead of giving gifts, the Oetjen family makes a donation to each family member’s charity of choice. For many years, Eric’s choice has been HI USA. Through his knowledge sharing and advice, many of his nephews took their first hostelling adventures and ultimately chose HI USA as one of their designated charities. But Eric has even more to give. He was recently elected to the International Youth Hostel Federation (IYHF) Board of Directors as Treasurer, where he is now able to bring the HI USA perspective to an international stage. He’s influencing HI at the highest level, all because he trusted the advice of a colleague and became a local volunteer. So Eric’s main advice? Get advice. Advice from strangers-turned-friends led to some of his best memories from traveling abroad. And without some good advice, he might still be on a local bus, trying to dodge flying chickens, somewhere on the island of Fiji.

I have had wonderful experiences and loads of fond memories from times spent at smaller and mid-size hostels in the USA, as well as Britain and Europe. I also think that variety in both size and location of HI USA hostels is very important for the different programs that make use of them. - Alexandra C. Dilworth, HI USA donor

• Expand education programs

W H AT WO U L D YO U S AY. . . if 1,900 volunteers were standing in front of you? The best volunteer program is the one where the volunteer and the organization each think they have the better end of the deal. For HI USA, volunteers are the backbone of the authentic, local experiences that keep guests coming back. Teaching classes. Leading tours. Cooking dinner. Sharing local knowledge. In 2013, over 1,900 volunteers contributed 22,617 hours towards making HI USA hostels and regions more enriching, social, and fun. HI USA wouldn’t be what it is without our volunteers, and we feel fortunate to have each and every one of them. But if you asked one of our volunteers, they might tell you about what they get back from volunteering. Henry Milich leads the Hills of San Francisco walking tour for guests of HI San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf every Wednesday. This has been his routine for the past 7 years. “I really enjoy meeting different types of people from all over the world and sharing my love of the uniqueness of San Francisco with them,” says Henry. He never accepts tips – a true testament that volunteering his time to lead this tour gives him all the satisfaction he needs.

Valorie Wallace has gone above and beyond for HI Portland Hawthorne, reinventing local activities for hostellers and creating a local discount program for guests, all since the beginning of 2014. She says, “I love showing others why Portland is special to me. One of the greatest Valorie Wallace joys in life is meeting people who have completely unique experiences to your own and finding that you have a similarity in a love for exploration and learning through travel.” Chuhan Zhou took HI Boston’s Unofficial Harvard Tour once, then learned all the material and did additional research to lead the tour herself. Leading this tour every other week without missing a beat, Chu says, “I feel fortunate to be able to provide guests with the best advice I have, while at the same time learning about their fascinating life stories. It’s amazing to speak with people from all over the world without being away.”

HI Harpers Ferr y Celebrates 50th Anniversar y Sometimes the gift of volunteering can last a lifetime, and beyond. Fifty years ago, volunteers opened the doors to HI Harpers Ferry, a hostel they built together. On the border of Maryland, within walking distance West Virginia and Virginia, HI Harpers Ferry is strategically located just off the Appalachian Trail as a welcome retreat for hikers who reached the 1,000mile marker. Now, a half century later, eight of the original volunteers reunited to celebrate the hostel’s Golden Anniversary and experience how the hostel has evolved to become an important member of the local community and a destination for travelers from around the world. W H AT WO U L D YO U S AY. . . if you could explore postwar Europe as a cyclist? Absorbing post-war Europe wasn’t exactly the impetus for David Knapp’s trip, but that’s what happens when you’re hostelling: something you didn’t plan becomes the most memorable part that forever changes you.

While doing chores and cooking meals alongside other guests from all over the world, he had an outlet to share his eye-opening experiences and gain perspective from someone else who had done the exact same thing but had a very different reaction.

It was 1949, and David had just graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. He was no stranger to hostelling, so when his friend invited him to cycle through six countries in Europe, he was not intimidated. From taking bike trips across Cape Cod and staying at hostels with his friends, David understood the hostelling experience and thought it would be a fun and affordable way to travel. Of course, it was both those things, but it became so much more.

These connections and conversations with strangersturned-friends are still alive in old photos and his memory, and they have served as an inspiration throughout his life. When asked what he would tell his 22-year-old self right before that journey, he remarked, “A lifechanging, life-lasting educational experience is laid out in front of you. Absorb and enjoy every minute.” Like so many hostellers who were forever changed by who they met and what they saw, David turned his passion into activism in hopes of making the world a better place. From tirelessly advocating for the Boy Scouts to change their policies regarding gay members to helping make his church more welcoming to all, he sees what needs to be done and does something about it. This includes ensuring today’s travelers can have the same life-changing hostelling experiences he had. David has been a committed and generous supporter of HI USA, and even if just one young person follows in his footsteps, he has no doubt created a better world.

Hostellers in Europe in 1946

Sixty-five years later, David reflects, “You can’t appreciate your own country unless you’ve gone outside it and can see the good and the not-sogood through someone else’s eyes.” Bombed buildings, remains of other buildings, and people trying to pick up the pieces juxtaposed with beautiful mountains, country roads, and young people enjoying life – this is what he saw as he pedaled through England, Scotland, Wales, France, Holland, Luxembourg, and Belgium. As a cyclist, David wasn’t just a tourist; he was part of the land, people, and culture. And hostelling tied it all together.
