ENVIRONMENTAL SENSITIVITY PROJECT

Last date of submission: 08.07.2016 Project Name: Seeds’ needs! Purpose: The purpose of this project is to study the kind of conditions needed for seeds to sprout. Project Description: 1. Take a handful of moong seeds and soak them in water overnight. 2. Now take 3 identical cups and put cotton in two of them, and a layer of soil with the same thickness as the cotton in the last one. 3. Pour equal amounts of water in each of them – just enough to make them moist, not dripping wet. 4. Spread ten seeds of moong in each cup. 5. Put 1 of the cups with cotton in the refrigerator, put a lid on the 2nd one and keep it in a warm cabinet, and the 3rd one in sunlight. (Make sure birds don’t eat them!) 6. Keep them in these conditions for one entire day. 7. You will need to make sure that the all of them are equally damp as time passes, so keep checking every 3 hours or so and water as and when needed. 8. At the end of the day, check whether any of the seeds have sprouted. 9. Keep it overnight and check again. 10. Make drawings of each cup every 6 hours. 11. You can also take a 4th cup, with some change that you can think of and conduct the same experiment. NOTE: 1. You will need to submit a 4-5 page report. Your report should include: 2. A list of conditions for each cup – cup 1, cup 2, cup 3 (and cup 4) – whether it is getting sunlight, heat/warmth, water, soil, air. Put a tick against the available condition.( Refer observation table 1) 3. Drawings of each of the cups every 6 hours (don’t worry if you can’t look at them when it’s night-time and you’re asleep!) Refer observation table 2 4. Your observations, in a table, about which cup had the most sprouted seeds, and the longest sprouts. (Refer observation table 3 ) 5. Why do you think one cup had longer sprouts than the others? Explain, mentioning conditions too. 6. Write 2-3 lines explaining why people eat sprouted seeds. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
